Yeah, I knew of someone kind of like this. My Mom had this friend (who actually passed away a couple years ago) who, whenever you'd tell her a story about something that happened to you, would tell you back the same exact story and say it happened to her. Sometimes she'd retell a story that you told her previously in the same conversation! She was a weird one.
I knew a girl in high school who for the life of her just couldn't admit that it's her fault she arrived late. She always claimed to have some new illness that prevented her from doing things expected of her. One time she showed up late to marching band practice and said it's because she just got done with chemotherapy. I spent the first seven years of my life watching my grandma slowly die of leukemia, so I knew a thing or two about cancer, and I knew for a fact that not only would a chemo patient be too exhausted to do anything after that (especially something as physically demanding as a three hour marching band rehearsal), but also that cancer makes you sensitive to heat, so her lying ass would never have been allowed to be out in that hot August heat for as long as she was. Nobody called her out on it because at that point we were all just tired of her bullshit.
I knew this guy back in the '90s who, upon learning that I had experience with Mac but not PC, told me that the PC had a "Think" button on it that when pressed, would move the cursor to the exact point you were looking at on the screen. He told me this weird, trivial lie as though it were something to get really excited about.

You reminded me of my ex who lied about testing for the CIA and "deciding to pass" on the offer. He also claimed to have roofies, as if that'd be impressive for some reason? Def a lie since I was like, "Cool, can I try one?" and he just stammered something about having to get more.
I had a friend in middle school who was a compulsive liar. Maybe not the most pathetic one, but probably the most weirdly elaborate: he insisted that there was a GameShark code for Goldeneye 007 on the N64 which would unlock something called “Idol Mode,” which would unlock a whole bunch of wacky secrets in the missions. These included: -Being able to save Trevelyan from being killed at the end of the Facility mission, and play the Runway level with both of you escaping together, one of you driving the tank on the way to the end. -Being able to find Mayday in a secret room in the Egyptian Temple (he added in the detail that said room had a shadow of a fan in it). After you kill her and go on to find Baron Samedi, a dialogue box would appear of him saying “You Killed Mayday,” and then running to a room with the Zorin blimp from a View To A Kill to try to escape. -Trevelyan also appearing in the Egyptian Temple, armed with a throwing knife. If you shot him enough times, he’d run away to a secret room which contained a time machine. If you followed him through the time portal, you’d end up back in Ancient Egypt and fight a bunch of enemies wearing Anubis masks and stuff. He actually told me what the GameShark code was, a whole list of numbers and letters and everything. When I called his bluff and actually entered it on my GameShark, only for nothing to happen, he got pissy and said that I must have missed a character.
Fully grown woman in her 30s. Had a lump in her mouth and went to see her GP about it. Came back from the GP claiming she had cancer. The GP had made a confirmed diagnosis just by looking. No oncologist, no biopsy, just a GP's eyeballs.

I tried to impress a girl by telling her about the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry it cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get were those big yellow ones.

When my younger sister was trying to impress this one guy at school (Yes, we studied at the same school, but different levels) she created a fake organization as a trip to her bedroom, that she owns this Maksutov-Cassegrain at home, which made me think things cause I don’t remember us owning one I assumed mom may had bought her one or someone else gifted it to her. She did this, after finding out her crush is into Solar Systems and anything Outer Space related. It worked, her crush signed up. As it turns out it’s all A LIE. Barely anyone talked to her again at school, that made us no choice but to transfer schools, if we stayed, the shadiness of those at school would never changed for her.

I was that kid. I was constantly bullied because i have a lazy eye and so i befriended the "weird kids" (nothing wrong with them, just outsiders and declared the weirdos by the rest of the class). Once i befriended them, i would get lost in my fantasy, talking about being a werewolf, or we would replay scenes from our favourite fantasy books. They didnt care i lied, fir us it was the escape from reality, they played along and it git us through the week. Nowadays i okay tabletop rpg, feel somewhat better about myself and i sm grateful for my old friends to have accapted me and my weird fantasies, without them i doubt i would be here today
I had a friend for three or four years whom I met on discord. One of the first things I can remember her doing is telling everyone in the chat that she had watched her mother be brutally murdered in an alleyway shooting. Like a week later she confessed that it was a lie to me and a couple of other friends, and that even though she’s adopted her real mom was not dead and they still talked to each other once in a while. That was the beginning of a really really toxic friendship that left a lot of scars on our small friend group and after about four years we all cut her off one by one. She was bipolar and very mentally unstable and we tried to help her for as long as we could but eventually had to accept that some people will never really change. I still wish there was a way things could’ve worked out.

I worked with someone like this. A real BS artist. Nobody liked him. He would insert himself in conversations that he wasn't a part of and rudely interrupt with a clearly made up story in an attempt to try and one up everybody. One time a small group (2-4) of us were chilling in the shop eating lunch. The topic of conversation happened to be lightning strikes, specifically near misses. Here is his story. "One time I way driving down the highway in the fast lane. Lightning struck the guard rail not 4ft away from me. The ensuing explosion threw my car across 2 lanes of traffic and into the ditch. All 4 of my tires were melted". Nobody said anything. Everyone just left.
These reminded me of my cousin who always said he did everything I had done before I did and better. As a little kid, I believed him. He grew out of it though.
Not a single lie but a multitude off them. Knew these three guys. Bill, Lee and Michael. I swear they couldn't say more than a sentence without it turning into huge story to impress everyone. The BS meter would go off the chart as they made the most ridiculously impossible claims. Usually something like beating a Mexican gang in a knife fight after a 200 mph car chase. Ol Michael could really lay it on thick. On 9/11 he claimed that he was best buddies with the priest that was killed and was on the phone with him when it happened. Like yeah, priest is hyper focused on saving people but had to call Michael in Oregon for life saving advice.
I grew up like this and was known for it, but after high school it stopped when I got off jobs scrapping. Though when bored I get the thought and every so often on impulse I make up a white lie then correct myself by saying sorry that is false old habit. It effects you as a adult and took people a long time to trust me and the ones who know me well understand when I say "nevermind it's false". It's impossible to break and hard to not to embellish a story or over exaggerate something on purpose.
