Hello everybody and welcome to Bull Technology. No game has quite had the run that Minecraft has, and no game has had a greater impact-personally-on myself than this incredible game. [Insert nostalgic videos of mine]. But recently the community has turned, and dozens of viral videos have been created that heap scorn and ridicule on both Minecraft and Mojang (Minecraft’s developer). What happened? Is Minecraft truly headed on a downward spiral and will it soon fade into obscurity, or is the community’s negative PR simply a minor setback in a long road to success? Let's find out!

Minecraft isnt boring you just got burnt out. Try new genres, new games. Try to get hobbies other than gaming if you want. You can't play a game for years straight and expect it to be fun for that entire time

I'm playing terraria (vanilla) since 2013, and to this day, I still think is a very fun and engaging game and I come back from time to time. But for minecraft I can't say the same. When I play vanilla minecraft I constantly have this feeling that is missing something. I highly doubt that is being burnt out the problem.
@vulturesalesman
@vulturesalesman 4 месяца назад
@@Blaasfemy I think this has more to do with taste. I have the opposite problem: I've been playing Terraria since the days of mobile 1.2, and now I can't stand playing it unless it's modded, and even then it gets boring for me... Meanwhile I can still have plenty of fun with Minecraft, even with minimal to no mods. The difference between the two, for me, is how Terraria is more about the exploration and combat and Minecraft is more about doing what you want. And I like building... so Minecraft caters more to me.

I have the same feeling too. It’s probably HOW you play the game that make it strange. Mojang didnt make the game progress very good. Also, me and you actually enjoy terraria yay

@@Blaasfemy As a fellow Terraria player who struggles to stay interested in Minecraft, my main issue is that I'm not very good at setting my own goals. I like games to have set progression, which Terraria does quite well with many tiers of gear and several required fights along the way. In Terraria the goal is to beat the game, and the progression from the start to the end is the fun part. In Minecraft the goal is just to have fun, but unless there's things that I _need_ to do... I'll be lazy and not feel like I need to do anything. That's why I like Skyblock so much; it all revolves around progression, and it's easy to see the results of all your hard work.

I thought that. Until I realised that new Minecraft doesn't do as good a job of incentivising building and community as old Minecraft did. There is a reason my new Minecraft playthroughs only last 2 weeks and I barely finish building one house. Even when I try add 300+ mods I get burnt out and stop. It's a mix of things, atmosphere it isn't as cozy and lonely and at time's creepy as beta Minecraft was. Building isn't as incentivised as in beta Minecraft. In beta I now build train stations for Minecarts between different bases. In new Minecraft I end up living in a village for the first week not even building my own basic house until I have diamond armour and then using an elytra so my friends all build 2000 blocks apart as that's only a few minutes flight. there's no community like there is when we play beta. Combat balance is way off in new versions. They added sprint mechanics yet didn't change the speed of the enemies. No wonder nobody fears creepers anymore. In caves creepers are actually terrifying in beta. Also the building mechanics got soooo complex that I feel terrible if I don't add a load of detail to a build and then one house takes me literally a real life week to build. Beta Minecraft with its limited palette of blocks and blockier textures allows you to just build something easily and let your mind run wild without going crazy with the time consuming details. In new MC I don't think I've actually finished a build project in years. I spend 1 month building it. And don't even get to the end because it's just so complex. Old MC I can build an entire castle in 5 hours and it feels so accomplishing. I'm sure you might also be burnt out on Minecraft as part of the issue. But new MC does have it's issues despite how cool some of the additions are. Give beta 1.7.3 a go. Or try the 'better beta' mod for 1.20 and turn off the less vanilla mods like HUD and minimap and just enjoy a classic Minecraft experience as Notch intended. It holds up really well. Better than new MC imo.

I think the biggest issue with modern minecraft isn't a change in atmosphere or lazy updates, i think the problem is that a lot of additions aren't very meaningful and aren't integrated into the rest of the game. Archeology is a good example, it feels like it's a novelty feature rather than expanding the gameplay. The reason updates like caves n cliffs and the nether update worked so well in my eyes is because they integrate into the rest of the game, world gen and the nether are going to be a part of everyone's experience. I'm not saying every feature or update needs to be universally applicable, but I think it would be nice if mojang would give their new additions meaningful uses. Think about how useful copper was on release (to an extent it could still do with being more useful due to how common it is) or how useful amethyst is. It'd be nice if they had more uses or were integrated into the game better. I would prefer if the sniffer did more than just give you flowers, as those could very easily have just been added to worldgen. The armadillo at least has a concrete use that, albeit niche, is something that makes sense to be tied to a new mob. Overall, it just feels like a lot of modern additions to the game are too shallow or not integrated into the rest of the game's systems, some features feel like they need more meat on their bones. The yearly release cycle for updates is a clear culprit in the matter to me. Obviously Mojang can't work as fast as they'd like because Microsoft is breathing down their necks, and they'd never be able to request something like this, but I think not being constricted to releasing an update every year would lead to update quality skyrocketing. At the end of the day, this is a great video because it helps to illustrate that a lot of the discourse around modern minecraft involves people focusing on the wrong things.

This is a well developed comment that touches on a criticism that I agree with. Some of the new features to the game do certainly feel disjointed with the rest of the game and could have been implemented better. Thanks for the comment though!

Some are for sure and others do add genuine features. Bees for example are a terrific addition to the game and they add several new blocks and mechanics to the game (candles, honey blocks, waxing abilities, etc.). But certainly some of the new mobs leave plenty to be desired. The sniffer and the frogs lack any real usage and they mostly are eye candy. Not all mobs need to be completely functional and drop amazing loot though. Ambience and immersion are important, and these new mobs to add a bit of that. I've played with the MoCreatures mod for years and it adds many many mobs that are purely for looks and thats a-okay because these mobs make the world feel so much more alive.

Is a novelty feature not an expansion to gameplay? It adds new gameplay just like any feature.
@sarahtonin3743
@sarahtonin3743 4 месяца назад
@@stargazer-elite a novelty feature is something that players won't be engaging with often. I can't speak for every player on the planet but me and almost everyone I know don't touch things like archeology or buried treasure after like a week has passed because there's no real reason to other than checking out the new feature. This is why, to an extent, I like the idea of the netherite smithing templates being placed in the bastions. It encourages the player to engage with the content by offering a unique reward that's going to be useful to most players. I think it could've been done better, netherite was already a huge pain in the ass to get and an extra step wasn't necessary, but I do greatly approve of giving players concrete reasons to go explore bastions. Just like bastions, end cities are something players will frequently want to engage with because you want the shulker shells and the elytra. Players might not want to engage with archeology very frequently because the only unique reward is a decorative pot. Is it cool to be able to decorate a pot? Yea, it's a neat idea, but I don't think it's compelling enough for most players to want to engage with archeology on a consistent basis. Minecraft is a game ruled by intrinsic motivation, there's no functional purpose to building a really cool house, but it ideally gives extrinsic motivators to get the player started. The most enjoyable part of exploring a structure like a bastion or an ancient city should be the exploration itself, but if the rewards for doing so aren't enticing enough, a lot of players will struggle to motivate themselves to go explore said structures just for fun. That's why bastions have the smithing templates, and why I wish that the echo shards had more uses than just the respawn compass. The respawn compass is genuinely useful, but it's the *only* use for this material. In all fairness, though, the gear found in ancient cities is usually really good, which is another strong motivator as you aren't restricted by progression as to when you can go to one. With end cities, them having such strong gear doesn't matter much when they're in the end, but ancient cities are in the overworld, so you can tackle one early to get some strong gear. But yea, the tl;dr is that i consider novelty features to be additions that give little motivation for players to seek them out and engage with them. You explore nether fortresses so you can get blaze rods, you explore bastions so you can get smithing templates, you do archeology to get some shards to make a decorative pot. It's a cool idea, but it's very narrow in its usefulness, so any player that doesn't plan on using a pot in their current building project has zero reason to engage with archeology. You dig for buried treasure to find a heart of the sea so you can make a conduit, which is only useful if you plan on having some kind of project underwater. In that instance, it's very useful, but it's, again, narrow in its usefulness. I think these features end up feeling like a novelty because the only two reasons to engage with them are because they're new or because you happen to be in the specific situations where their unique rewards are useful.

Personally, I still think Minecraft is a great and perfectly enjoyable game. It’s not without flaws, but those are negligible enough in my eyes. This wasn’t always how I saw it though. I actually agreed with a lot of these points for awhile until I was hit with a realization: Minecraft is meant for all audiences and different people play different ways. The two things I think people do too much of is focusing way too much on progression to the point of ignoring everything else and playing only Minecraft for way too long and suffering burnout. My advice to people is limit your playtime and try to fully immerse yourself in the world of Minecraft without focusing too much on one aspect of the game and you’ll find yourself enjoying it a lot more. Try something new. You never know what you might find out about the game and even yourself

thank you for being a sane and balanced person. I try to be considerate of diverse opinions but good lord does it get under my skin when people call minecraft boring. If a kid stops playing with a favorite toy because they got bored, it's not the toy! The kid just got tired of it. And making disagreeable changes isn't really a good argument to me since you generally don't have to play with the changes you don't like, or you can play old versions. I love this game. It's made me a better artist, it even has helped me develop task management. And I'm so happy that they've continued to add onto it for both their old players and for kids of today. I would argue that the added structures add to the game atmosphere. The “lonely atmosphere” made it so that the game had no atmosphere for med because signs of life (ether before or past depending on the setting) are what make worlds interesting in any piece of media. For Minecraft being “boring” now, I’ll admit that this is biased, but I feel like the focus on automated farming and turning the game into a bootleg factorio if anything would be the cause of this to me, and basically having the game play itself.

My main problem is that it feels like the majority of the Minecraft community is feeling entitled to something you don’t see that with almost any other community they don’t realize how good they have it. I get that it’s the biggest game on the planet in multiple different different ways but that’s no excuse to constantly change sides saying the opposite things constantly the community is so large that it’s split into multiple factions of ideas, but that’s still no excuse to constantly be demanding something that other communities aren’t demanding of. Development is the same for all companies is the exact same the only differences are the coding languages and the type of game. Am I saying the community should just shut up and let Mojang do what they want? No everyone deserves to have a voice and give feedback to the devs, but it doesn’t have to be in such a rude manner. My second problem with this community is that they never learn literally one of the first things you learn in school ever and that is to “put yourself in other peoples shoes”. TLDR: the community is entitled and a bunch of non empathetic jerks. (For the most part of course not all)

Almost every time the unhappy part of the community tries to give feedback in a "non rude" way nothing happens, even when that part of the community is basically the whole. This happened with the chat reporting, the copper bulb situation and the fireflies, and will probably keep happening since Mojang knows it works. Now on the entitlement thing I'm sorry but I don't really see it. Yes, there is lots of criticism that is rude and not very constructive, but that's the same with every other game. The only difference is that since the Minecraft community is that much larger, there are going to be that many more people complaining. The only time i have seen the community really just demand something (correct me if I'm wrong I've been out of the Minecraft drama loop for a while) is when we asked for every mob vote for to be added, but i feel like that is just because Mojang promised the losers of the mob votes would be added in later updates but they haven't added a single one. You are however very right about the empathy thing. Most people don't realize that while the way Mojang acts is more professional and less indie, they have very little developers compared to other games. They just see the front (that is basically less Mojang and more Microsoft) and just act like Mojang is a huge corporation while in reality they have very little developer manpower compared to similar earning games. Personally, I think the Minecraft Community has gotten pretty spoiled over the years... Like, stop for a moment and put all your biases aside, try to think about things objectively. Minecraft costs 30 dollars (40 if you're buying the Java + Bedrock bundle), that's half the price of your average AAA game, with a sizeable amount of content. We get yearly content updates completely for FREE, while any other game franchise as big as Minecraft would make us pay for DLC. If we don't like new updates, they still allow us to play older versions if we wish to do so. Despite being owned by Miscrosoft, what they give us is extremely generous compared to the usual standard for the gaming industry. I feel we really take that for granted. The Minecraft Developers are not at all lazy... Every update they have a lot of subtle under-the-hood changes to improve the experience, usually in the form of bug fixes and slight performance improvements, as well as giving players plenty of tools to create their own mods, data packs, and resource packs. They are humans after all... They have limits. Ever since the Nether Update, I feel like the standard for updates has been raised too high (because most people don't know that the dev team had a lot of time crunch and overworked themselves in order to make and release the Nether Update on time). The bar has been raised too high, and because the playerbase is _so huge_ there's a LOT of conflicting opinions and viewpoints, leading the a lot of toxicity within the community. People (myself included) have a tendency to get tunnel vision about our opinions and ignore the other side of things a lot. If you look at the mob votes, and think about what its actually like, are we not being unfair? Mojang offers us the choice to choose which mob we want in the game, and we fight amongst ourselves. A lot of people get mad that we can't have all three... Its like if Mojang offered us a choice between three chocolate bars, and we get mad we can't have all three. Sure, they can _technically_ afford three chocolate bars, but that doesn't mean having all three is good for our health (or in this case, the game's health). I think we all need to just chill out, stop expecting so much, and smell the roses. Its a block game. We all love this block game (well, most of us do at least), so can we just appreciate Minecraft and all its given us? Minecraft _is_ changing, EVERYTHING changes. That's part of life. You can fear change, or you can embrace it. I love modern Minecraft. A lot of the more recent changes are my favorite additions to the game. Its in no way perfect, but it shouldn't have to be.

from 1.17 to now i see the updates that have come out as sort of growing pains for the devs; they've revamped/rework or at least tried to overhaul many aspects of the game's foundation being released or experimental, but its all there. combat exploration through structures and biomes and technology or the tools available to the player are all aspects that the devs have taken a shot at expanding for better or worse. it feels like theyre looking into what will keep the game healthy and relevant in the long term and with 1.20.6 and 1.21 really feel like they've finally finding their footing. it really sad to see ppl critique features without trying out ways to interact/use them for themselves but that's happened before and it'll continue to happen.

As a dev myself. I utterly hate all the stupid "lazy dev" comments from folk who have zero clue what working on a nearly 20 year old codebase is like. You gotta fix bugs, you gotta improve the performance. New features are harder to add. You gotta fix your house before you add an extension cus otherwise things will start breaking. Oh, and no, Notch abd pre-Microsoft was not perfect. I remember when the Beta 1.7.1 release royally messed up. I remember trees in peoples worlds getting messed up when spruce was added and Notch going "oh well". Thats not how you build a solid foundation and we're paying down that debt now. Also, we would get pistons and shears in an update by themselves and we considered that exciting. You guys get like a whole bloody DLC once a year, thats nuts.

I agree that Minecraft is still good, but it isn’t perfect, and I honestly think it has strayed a little bit. To bring up an example from one of the videos at least present in your thumbnail (I think, or maybe it was a screenshot somewhere in the video), one good point made in Another Serious Critique of Minecraft is what beds have done to the game. At the start, the night was a constant precence that made itself periodically known and had the normally dreamlike and tranquil landscape suddenly fill up with threats left and right. Minecraft, having perfected the simplified form of building and terraforming for prayers by making its world out of big virtual lego bricks, gave prayers both young and old, new and experienced, skilled and unskilled, both an inevitable problems and a solution with infinite faces. Build a wooden box, a dirt pile, or a mansion if you have the time. Maybe just dig a hole or pillar out of reach. So now you’re in the safe bubble you’ve created, listening to the rattle of bones and shuffling of zombies right outside, surrounded by the fruits of your own creativity pushed to necessity. Of course, you could simply wait out the night. But you’re not playing a game to just sit there, you’re there to create and have fun! So what do you do? What *can* you do? If you’ve built up and have some materials leftover, you could do some work on your base. Pretty it up or maybe just improve the walls. If you’re connected to the ground or a cliff, you can use the empty time to make a mine and gather the next level of resources which can either improve your own abilities or go to the base. That’s up to your priorities and the long-term and short-term objectives you’ve created for yourself. But then came the bed. With the click of a button, the night fades away. The threats suppressed before they appear. You don’t even need a house, you can just place it anywhere. Of course, you’ll probably still build one. But you don’t need to, so for all the more players, it’ll feel unnecessary and like a chore. Creativity isn’t saying a million words without input, it’s the ability to solve a problem by not being suppressed by the rules given to you, but using them for yourself. Necessity doesn’t create creativity, but it does give it an initial push. The first spark that, if it hits the right player, might bloom into a full flame, igniting their passion to create. All from the initial escape from the night. This is my way to word only one off multiple quite good points brought up in that video. Edit/conclusion: Now, without a solution, I’m just a complainer. So what do I propose? Well, while I’m no game designer, I might have an idea or possibly two. For one, the bed shouldn’t skip the night. A better option would be if it simply sped up time a bit. Monster still spawn, things still happen, and it all goes a bit faster because the night still exists. Another thing that could be done is some inspiration taken from Valheim’s comfort system. By having a roof over your head, nearby decorations, a source of heat and all that lovely stuff, you create a more comfortable space to live. Trying this back into the bed, it could make the speed up effect faster or slower depending on the comfort level present. I could even be that it blocks you from using beds outside of a proper shelter. Those are just some ideas, though.
@carinaslima

My idea is to make the bed take a bit longer to become day as you are laying on the bed, taking 1 minute. A comfortable house with the essentials makes this faster.

It is strange how feeling "lonely" is seen as a positive to many classic Minecraft fans. Nostalgia is a bizarre drug. Its also strange to me how people complain about Minecraft changing too much, but immediately say that Minecraft's progression needs to change... Yet people complained when they added Netherite to the progression, replacing Diamond as the strongest material. It feels hypocritical to me, because I'm willing to bet that if they added more progression tiers people would complain that its "too different" from classic Minecraft.

Minecraft is fun! But if you play enough of it, you are bound to get burnt out and feel that the "game is boring" but it's just the constant repetitive nature of playing the same game. It applies to all other games as well. So, just take some breaks, play new/other games and when you do that, you get newer ideas which you can later implement in minecraft and it won't feel boring. That's what I do haha. And if the new features/updates feel overwhelming, don't give up. You will get used to it and understand that the game is what you want it to be. Those additions are needed to keep the game updated and hey, you might even like them a lot! I used to think the 1.18 Caves and Cliffs update ruined the world generation but after playing it and comparing to older versions, I realized that it's not bad at all. And if I didn't like it, I would simply go back and play an older version
@boorno1406
@boorno1406 2 месяца назад
I think you are mostly right, just like I think Minecraft's recent critiques are mostly right. To me personally, Minecraft has always been boring, lacking in content, too easy, shallow and unpolished. The first thing that comes to my mind when I see Minercaft is unrealized potential. I only played it as a kid, just like I played crappy, low effort mobile games back then (not to say it's that bad; it's infinitely better). Good mods help solve some of my problems, and the game definitely gets closer to enjoyable for longer than a couple hours, though it's obviously not a solution. Various modders have different visions and their mods don't often make sense together. Or even work together, really. I can enjoy it for a few hours every few years (and even that may very well simply be nostalgia), but after that there really isn't anything particularly interesting left to do. You can easily get a diamond set, build a big house and a farm during your first day of playing. And then? No story or lore to discover, no further progression, nothing. That said, it's not like I hate Minecraft. It's undoubtedly a great game that shaped the entire industry. I just don't think it's for me. I am not sure why people are suddenly complaining about certain aspects of the game. I do agree with a lot of them, but as you said, most of those criticisms have been true for years. Perhaps they should just move on to other games that better satisfy them. If you feel similarly about Minecraft as I do, I would definitely recommend a game called Vintage Story. It solves nearly every problem described in Minecraft's critiques and keeps getting better still.

I personally really enjoyed the faster update rate where quantity was smaller but you could expect multiple updates each year. The reason for me liking this approach is part nostalgia from playing old minecraft and part because i prefer new content to be spaced out over smaller bits rather than everything at once since i get to look forward to new features and try them out sooner than if they were in a big update. Yes we have experimental features and snapshots but those usually don't get implemented in servers and with the constant readjustments of mechanics for balancing reasons & bugs it gets pretty jarring to get used to them. I do think backscaling update size would help with lowering expectations since currently if an update is not received well there is about a years period for the next one so people are going to be left waiting for the next update for longer which can cause frustration for players. Unpopular opinion but i thought the fire & ice update was actually pretty good since i liked the idea of smaller updates being released regularly compared to major updates, sadly this was not received well so idt we will go back to such a system anytime soon. One thing i think current Minecraft is held back by is parity and debugging with its other versions when it comes to new features, i remember hearing one of the reasons for bundle delays was because of issues with making it work with pocket edition of Minecraft. I do think this adds way more time to updates than before even if the new feature seems simple.
@bull_technology
@bull_technology 3 месяца назад
I agree with some of the points you make here for sure. To the smaller but more frequent updates, I'd say I also prefer this approach. In the very early days of the game, smaller updates would come out almost weekly and this kept players almost constantly engaged. Certainly, smaller updates would also help with the expectation issue as you outlined as well. Thanks for the comment though--I appreciate it!

I honestly think minecraft has been going in a fantastic direction. From my experience, a lot of criticism of caves and cliffs is usually that it took so long, but 1: revamping an entire terrain generation system is hard to do right and do well and 2: the team specifically said they were taking longer for the health of their devs and to avoid crunch. I've always said I'd prefer a late game over an early one for this exact reason. Crunch is so prevalent in the modern triple A industry and it's incredible to see a company put the health of its devs before a few angry fans. We still got caves and cliffs, we still got wardens and bundles and chest boats. These updates are also free. The team deciding to scrap or delay things is perfectly valid. Players need to remember that the Mojang team are people too, which I think a lot of gamers tend to forget or just not care about. In regards to progression, I've watched the videos you mentioned before and I think they bring up some good points. I don't think the progression hurts minecraft's entertainment value by default, but I would love to see a new gamemode revolving around things like finding diamond templates in the nether and only getting netherite once you get to the end (maybe requiring dragon scales to add enchantments to it or something). I think a new gamemode instead of straight content could really expand Minecraft's appeal to those who like harder progression. I personally make a ton of rules for myself and install mods like Dungeon Difficulty to purposefully slow down how I play because I get overwhelmed otherwise. I made one challenge where I have to craft a portal from a ruined one, using obsidian found in chests, and can't use diamond tools or armor until I reach the nether and get one blaze rod for each piece or tool. Things like this as official gamemodes would be amazing and would provide new experiences and challenges for those looking to experience the difficulty of old school minecraft. If I eventually get decent at modding I'd love to make something like this. The only things I really don't like are minor tweaks, alongside chat report and reverting the account migration, as those have huge privacy and safety concerns. I personally am not a fan of the style of the sniffer and new plants, but they're growing on me, just like the new nether did. The biggest thing to refute any and all arguments regarding minecraft being boring or not hard enough is the existence of mods. Mods allow people to play how they want to and, with how easy modding is now between Modrinth and CurseForge, there's more freedom than ever to play minecraft how you want to. Edit: I do think minecraft has an issue with transportation. I think rockets which can power the elytra being harder to craft (one youtuber recommended dragon's breath rockets) and improving travel on horses, by boat and by minecart would help make the world feel a bit more fun and interesting to get around in. Also the ability to tweak which structures spawn and how often would solve the issue of people missing that lonely feel. I'm usually all for customizability in general and it can't hurt to add more modularity to the game.

I disagree vehemently. I'm too tired to make a long essay, so I'll focus on one topic and be brief: Games should force you to have fun. The fact Minecraft doesn't enforce fun / challenge anymore but you personally, Mr RU-vidr, manage to make your own fun is both an exceptional thing and a you thing. It's great you can make your own fun, I really believe that; most people, however, cannot or do not. Your ability to do that is a compliment for _you,_ not the game. Many people, including myself, see (or feel) this "forces you to have fun" aspect being missing and struggle to interact with the game. Your arguments in general, for me, all have this flaw; either you seem to miss what people are actually wanting from the game / what people saw in the old versions, or you write off people's struggles to engage with modern Minecraft because they lack the "make your own fun" ability while you do not. I think the vast majority of people would be fine if, for example, survival mode was bent towards what the older style players of Minecraft wanted - you know, an actual survival game about surviving - and adventure mode was changed into... well, what we have now! Then everyone wins! 😊

Most of the criticism these days about Minecraft is often highly contradictory, self entitled, like blaming the devs for their own burnout for playing the same game for a decade, or not adding exactly what that person wants to the game. They often call things many people use to be completely worthless no matter how many people use such a thing. Or be filled with blatant lies about the actual content of updates and everything the devs do. They work 8 hour shifts and have gone to 10-12 in the past working on updates and are always interacting with the community even in their spare time off the job. The changelogs alone this dev cycle alone would go on for hundreds of pages and that’s missing so much of the things they did. So often the false criticisms is just saying throw money at an ill defined issue as if that’s how coding works. Or try to quote how great modders are while ignoring several modders who now work at Mojang, how every known large modders they like to cite condemns these takes and refusing to list a single mod that can run on every device the game is on. So often you see people who pretend to provide valid criticism go off and call the modders of the game dickriders. Or anyone who’s even remotely aware of the bare minimum amount of research to know what’s in the updates. People think making a game with millions of lines of code twice at the same time for such a massive game is super easy that constantly throwing money at somehow solves. And I could say so much more. So much of that false criticism is just blatant lies that fall apart under 5 seconds of research and demanding they get what they themselves want regardless of anyone else. Also for people who say the game has lost its charm, what do they even want? What could they possibly add that’s wanted for them. Those kinds of people could never list what they’d even want in the game despite going on about “losing charm”. Same as people wanting more progression, they never list what they’d even want to add more progression. Or ignore all the people who liked beta more despite that having even less progression. And the people who always demand more and more content can’t even list anything they want other then ultra vague concepts like a mob or a structure or a dimension. Shows how difficult making this game is which they can never see.

I think you hit the nail right on the head when you say a good deal of this criticism is contradictory. Should Minecraft add an abundance of new features or should they preserve "original identity?" It just seems jumbled and disjointed.
@plumfadoodle4908
@plumfadoodle4908 3 месяца назад
@@bull_technology And this is the exact kind of thing Mojang needs to listen to about every single feature before they are even in snapshots visably, and then even more after that, thousands of contradictory options. Not only that but the community has a very short term memory when it comes to Mojang adding more to older features and listening to the community. They go on about how "Mojang is finally listening to the community". Every week, and then instantly forget about it a few days later if that. No matter what they do the community, or at least parts of it will never be satisfied. 1.20 was filled with community wanted content for one, yet people like to pretend like it added nothing. People walking right up to others enjoying features and calling the features completely useless regardless of what it does. And as I said before, people who go on about original identity can't even list what they want. I'm sure they would be very happy to go on about how great the updates were if Notch was somehow capable of the massive updates we get now. People go on about progression, and clout any features not meant for progression in that, and can't even describe what progression they want. Which even if they did get they would complain about it ruining and changing the game too much. While there are also some people who only care about the number of new features and not of any of the quality or actual work in them. The April Fools snapshots are a great showcase of that. People would be very quick to hate them if they were the actual updates. People act like Mojang having integrity is a bad thing.

Mojang has grown a lot as a company, and I would say that justifies higher expectations. Being okay with Mojang adding lackluster mobs because they'll add to it later is like saying it's ok for Ubisoft to release an unfinished game because they'll patch it later. Of course, Mojang is far better than Ubisoft in every way, but I think it's fair to expect a little more polish for each feature added.
@bull_technology
@bull_technology 4 месяца назад
I take issue with that analogy. As you conceded, Mojang is not Ubisoft and nuances is needed. Minecraft has a long history of items and features being added to the game and those items or features changing over time. I vividly recall when enchanting was first added to the game. At the time it was unbalanced and unpolished, but now the enchanting system is much more fleshed out. This is just one example of many. I agree that a larger company justifies higher expectations, but I would argue that Mojang has certainly delivered larger and more feature filled updates. Caves and Cliffs and the Nether Update were two of the largest updates ever added to the game (and both of those updates were pretty darn polished compared to previous updates).

can you prove that they're being lazy tho? it's easy to talk, less easy to put in practice. you dont know how much bureaucracy goes into it given how its a game that heavily depends on microsoft's control. not only this but also factor in the update to all platforms, bug testing, etc. And you also dont know how it works internally. even Kingbdogz who made the entirety of the aether dimension has explicitly said that its harder when you're working officially than just making a simple mod with those features. its very easy to jump to conclusions and blame others when you're dissatisfied. fact of the matter is you dont know whats happening inside. they COULD be being lazy or they COULD be having genuine trouble with making the updates in time. in the end its all our speculation and saying that its "DEFINITELY" one way or another is dumb. even worse is being a prick and saying someone is glazing mojang when they're doing an honest review as best as they can. get off the hate train, you're just as bad as the ones who glaze mojang

@Waterwolf221
@Waterwolf221 13 дней назад
@@doctorgrubious7725 the fact that you're compared vastly different games & companies just shows how little you know about the field. Fortnite/GTA have huge teams working on those games. for comparison Minecraft's team is comparably smaller. You're not even comparing the right things. First Person mode pertains to the fucking render engine, it has nothing to do with new items and minecraft already has that shit since the beginning. Anyway, those games don't lose on having big teams because the stuff they go for is standardized. The team doesnt need to be on board on a certain idea for an item because everything is common sense. Say if you want to add a car in GTA, all you need is someone to work on the parts of the car without explaining what a car is. If you're a 3D modeller you can just look up a car picture and follow it to create the model. The ones who code it will know: a car is for driving. And the same goes for all parts of the team working on it. Now lets go to minecraft: let's say they're adding a new biome (lets use the deep dark for this example) what the fuck even is a "Deep dark"?? it doesnt fucking exist. What loot will it have? it could have anything. What monsters will it have? Should it even have monsters? Special Effects? Would it fit the narrative of the game? What should the monsters in it do? Will it introduce new status effects? new weapons, new armor? if so, what? Theres just so much shit that you can take for granted when you aim for a typical game compared to a game like minecraft that has no basis in real life. And sure, some mobs, items do have basis on real life but they still have unique uses in Minecraft's universe. Like who even makes Wolf Armor in real life using Armadillo Scute that you take off with a Brush?? That makes no sense irl. This is just one facet of it by the way, not the full story. Like mate, if you think it's so easy then put the money where your mouth is and make a mod yourself. If you manage to take under 3 months from the absolutely start of the planning of the project for your mod and finish it, AND it perfectly and smoothly integrates with the Minecraft experience (aka, feels like a real minecraft update) with enough content to rival these big updates, then i'll say you're right. Y'all always talk big but when it comes to showing that it's actually possible, you never do shit.

I still think 1.14+ looks the best overall Indev's textures looked far too bright, almost garishly bright making the game hard to look at Pre-1.14 looks like the textures are in beta or the scribblings of a child half the time, the glass sucked and the old netherack looks just straight up bad however i do prefer the emerald block texture over the new one, if i had the old emerald block texture with the new emerald block texture's colours that would be perfect. As for post 1.14 most of these textures look super clean and appealing. I know some people think the textures look washed out but that's better than the textures being hard to look at (like you just turned on light mode on Discord at 1am) or reskins of each other in the case of the old ore textures or just really ugly in the case of the old netherack texture (IN MY OPINION)

I either have deja vu or watched this video before, maybe even commented… but as I already started writing the comment and don't see o having old one there I'll post it. So, actually I think it's rather easy to tell what's actual and original identity is, it consist of a few things: - pixelated graphic style - blockiness of the world - big freedom of what to do and how to play - simplicity - they may be things that seems complex, but they ale break down to simple in game elements - being interrconnected - pretty much all mechanics are in some way help the other, or make it better (like enchanting makes mining better etc.) or are related in any other way. Nothing is a lone island. And it is all kept in modern Minecraft(after all... the new graphics are still in pretty much the same more pixelated style. Just more clean. Though to me too it take some times to get used to new graphics... one of the hardest part were wheat, granite, andesite, diorite, netherrack and glowstone. Frankly the thing that make me change to new graphic was how much uncompatible were nylium blocks with old netherrack(which I still preffer)). Which does change, sure, but mostly for the better. New structures are big part of that (though there are 2 I don't really like so much - Woodland mansion, because it feels like just so out of place with its completely different scale than other structures; and Bastions, because they often a big mess, kinda feeling like they couldn't choose if they are more like a cave or more like a structure) Though yeah some of the new additions seems a bit detached/halfbacked at times which kinda stray from the last element I mentioned... but it's still a minor issue. Well there is also one issue of some simply stupid pieces of Mojang mindset in regard of minecraft. Like straight up lying that vertical slabs woud inhibit creativity(I mean noone could realistically be THIS stupid), or that sleepbag would be bad becaus "they take away uniquness of the bed" and thing like that. Also the stronge prefference towards kinda "forcing" player to not kill new passive mobs (by making them not really drop anything... while in few cases they definitely should!) And I think that the worst part about often half-backed mobs is not just how limited drop/use cases they have, but also with how obvious the improvement to them seems (sniffer is definitely a prime exampe here). Also progression… isn't really and issue. The issue are people who see it as the goal of minecraft, while progression is simply means to and end(I mean even for a sandbox we can just say progression can mean anything... that would make the word kinda meaningless). And is for the most part optional. You don't want to bother gathering iron? (even though even in worst cases it take just about hour to get full iron armor and basic tools) You can just do with stone tools and build things from wood and rocks. You want to conquer the end get netherite etc? Sure You can - in mosty situation - get to diamonds and enchanting quickly. You want to kill the dragon quick? You can. (Even ridiculously fast with speedrunning but where's the fun in that?) But you can also do is slower or just never. It's a sandbox after all so all options are equally valid. No matter if it would be done on peaceful, hardcore or whatever in between. Player can go through progression fast or take it as slow as he/she wants to. And that is part of the beauty of minecraft.

In my opinion, the main reason the Minecraft community has been turning on Mojang these past few years is the increasing bar of what makes a good update nowadays. Back in the old days, updates that only added a couple new blocks and items were seen rather positively, but those types updates would just not be accepted in the modern day. It's because Mojang from 1.13 to 1.18 had an excellent streak of updates where each update is better than the last, meaning anything less than amazing is now seen as mediocre. The direction that 1.19 went in didn't help either. As TheMisterEpic pointed out in his video about Caves and Cliffs, 1.19 sparked the notions such as "Mojang is lazy", "Mojang don't listen to the community", "If mods can do it, why can't Mojang?". And as a result, every update ever since has been living in the shadows 1.13-1.18, struggling to see the same success as those updates.

Minecraft definitely has lost its original identity but so do all games when they have 15 years of development, just look at bedrock edition shoving micro transactions down our throats. one thing that I dont see much in this conversation is the modding community. I remember when I was a kid what kept be going back to minecraft was all the mods and maps. Nowadays there just arent as many mods? As in it seems like the mod developers that made the most fun and unique mods kind of moved on with their lives. And now we have like three different mod loaders, and weird compatibility issues with that and all that. But idk it just was better in older versions. This is what I think makes the counter intuitive statements at 11:06 both be valid points. As in, minecraft used to be a since simple starting point for mods to add on top of, Minecraft kept getting more complicated and rather than aiding the modding scene just kind of made people give up it seems. Which ironically means that the community looks towards the developers to fill that role. Which doesnt work, as we can see.

But in terms of the development, It really does suck. Other games manage to produce more engaging content in a shorter amount of time than minecraft can. 1 update a year is ridiculous, especially when you consider that at most there is 10 new and unique features that aren't just filler(like a new wood type or building block). And their excuse about "we have to remake it in two different versions" is unacceptable. Becuase no other gaming studio has to do that, and thats because the devs created this problem for themselves. Instead of making minecraft into a united version, they had to split it into two vastly different versions: Bedrock and Java. This issue is their fault, so they cant use it as an excuse.

Mojang seems to be forcing players into playing the game the way Mojang wants them to play. I seem to be in a class of one here but I don't particularly appreciate how the last three updates have focussed on the RPG element and NOT the sandbox element.

Well sucks to be you guys who find it boring, but I haven't played it since the early beta versions, and I have returned recently. I think it has come a long way and is awesome. But I do not play vanilla. And as for Bedrock... F that. EDIT: Minecraft's progression HAS always been ajar. But with mods... anything is possible :D.

You pretty much summed up how I feel towards the "hate" Minecraft is getting and how I play the game. I started playing in 2012 and in a Singleplayer world. Now I play almost every weekend with my brother on our LAN world and it has been really fun. We already killed the dragon but we haven't explored the End yet, we are working on a massive base and taking breaks in between by exploring and fighting raids. I can't get enough of it.

The issue with mojang is that they have no actual ability to integrate any feature into the game, they have lost the concept of the game loop and thus everything has fallen due to that, there's a reason this critique has grown and... also probably why I got banned from twitter for saying It would be funny if someone threw an IED at mojang... Anyways, modern features are horribly implemented, they clash or have no function within the game to make them anything but niche, you can make a web of actions to get an item, some items like diamonds required many other actions, thus getting them and them not having a use was not as much of a deal because to get them, you also got the infrastructure, weather this is blocks, iron, or other materials, to do so, but for pots or sniffers? they are so isolated and easy to get that they are useless, they have no point, they are visionless, their textures clash with the game so hard for no reason, and the reward for it? A really awful textured flower, incredible. There is no entry back into the gameloop for new items, it is things you have to go out of your way to do and the reward is meaningless, to find diamonds you at least need to get wood, and a base, and storage, and fuel, and explore and mine and reveal more resources, by the end, you have diamonds in order to continue this loop you have begun, minecraft *SHOULD* die, it needs to, there's no more that can be done because mojang has no more vision.

I think it all depends. My friends burn out over time on a server, but it comes and goes. We took a several month break on our server and are now back in the full swing of things.

Did he really use stick shift, analog clocks and physical hard cover books as "nostalgia" items that arent really relevant in todays society? Except for the US most cars are stick shift (and they are better), analog clocks are superior to digital ones to this day and the same goes with hardcover books. Not only cuz you actually own them, they hold longer and studys have shown learning and reading is better for the brain with them. Ik that ahs nothing to do with the video, but think more about your arguments and use good ones instead of subjective ones

At least here in the US, stick shift is in the super minority. Only about 18% of drivers can drive a stick and only about ~2% of new cars sold are manual.

Personnally im super triggered at these youtubers because they seem to always forgets that Mods exists and thus pretty much all their 'the game is now boring' aren't valid at all; and don't get me started on the 'minecraft has changed' implying it's bad thing, like think about it comparing it to other game that lasted around that much time : would you still play games such as League of Legends, Warframe, Rimworlds, Rust etc and/or see new player if they didn't change since the old days?

Its not Mojang or even Minecraft really. Its the way those people play the game and how they perceive progression.

Its just not hard anymore. Theres no challenge after the first hour of play. Its just grinding after that.
@bull_technology
@bull_technology 4 месяца назад
Now that is a worthy point. I feel like the hunger overhaul health regeneration system really hampered the games difficulty for sure and that is a worthy criticism.
@DrewCNewOrleans
@DrewCNewOrleans 4 месяца назад
@bull_technology I've played since early beta. Back in those days, you had to worry about your health and getting killed by mobs all the time. Now, you can get diamond armor in a few hours and enchantments an hour after that. During that time you have food farms and you're golden. Yes, game knowledge over a decade has added a ton to this aspect, but the hunger and armor issues are a huge part of it. There needs to be a mode in between hard-core and regular play where armor does less, hunger hits more and maybe no enchantments. It doesn't need to be as hard as that primitive survival mod (name escapes me), but there needs to be a challenge.
@bull_technology
@bull_technology 4 месяца назад
I too remember the old days when food didn't stack and health was much more precious. There certainly does need to be more of a challenge to the game, and 'survival' mode is far too easy now. UHC mode addresses some of these issues, but I do think a separate-more-difficult-mode would make the game much more interesting for sure!

People don't hate for no reason. Hate is always ingnited by soemthing that came before it. In this case, Mojang's insistence on taking minecraft into a direction the community doesn't appear to like very much.

Minecraft had never a defidenan identity, and that's why its failing. The devs just add random things and expect people tome amazed like in 2011.

Dialko did a pretty good job explaining why beta is fun. A lot of the time youtubers don't play the old version of Minecraft so they can't see the real reasons why it was good.

Not being able to explain, it may reveal that nostalgia is playing a role. when I go back and play older versions of the game, I certainly have fun--and this is mainly due to the difficulty of older versions of the game pre release 1.0. I nevertheless, still enjoy modern versions of the game though.

Indeed it is surprising and the two examples you give haven’t quite panned out as the Minecraft killers most had hoped for. I think there have been plenty of games to use elements of Minecraft though-such as the endless survival games on Steam-but no other game has quite been able to do what Minecraft has.
