"Soccer is the only thing on this planet that we can all agree to do together," says theater maker and TED Fellow Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Through his performances and an engagement initiative called "Moving and Passing," Joseph combines music, dance and soccer to reveal accessible, joyful connections between the arts and sports. My theory is it's about sports dominance. The bigger sport in a country often gets called football where's you'd have to specify if you referred to a smaller sport by the same name. Still it's silly to get this worked up about it and often just devolves into a d*** measuring competition.

Metaphorical soccer is a cool idea. I want to think about this a bit more. Like how you could draw a picture of people playing soccer and also make it kinda metaphorical of the relationships between the players. Maybe?

Soccer, football does not matter, what really matters is: football is the most popular game in the world and although we have shamefully lost the last world cup, we are still the great champions of the world. We are the only who won five times The FIFA World Cup. Pleasure, I'm Eduardo from Brasil

Native Americans made the first rubber balls and have been playing soccer since 1600BC. It was played in Maine before first contact with Europeans and know as pasuckquakkohowog. We now call it soccer. Please, do keep up!

No... FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association not FISA) aknowledges that earlier/primitive forms started in China and Rome. Contemporary football started in England. There are mentions of indigenous peoples playing kicking and catching games in America and Australia but this was after. www.fifa.com/about-fifa/who-we-are/the-game/index.html IT'S FOOTBALL. Continue calling it soccer > this doesnt help bring the game into the mainstream of American sport! IDGAF about American Rugby or Baseball either.

No, thats how ideas are shaped! We do not know the full picture. But the modern game of football, what it is now called. FFS its FIFA - the whole world accepts it as football. End of story.

Don't mention that it was invented in England , or exactly how it was spread to so many counties along with loads of other sports and games from the UK,all of which we could agree to do together if we chose, like any team sport.I like football, but the premise of this talk is nonsense.
@leveljoe
@leveljoe 6 лет назад
It was invented by Mesoamericans and refined by the English and refined again once it returned to America. It is now known as football. The unrefined version is known as soccer.

@sominboy2757
@sominboy2757 6 лет назад
dp3699 association football is the techincal original term, soccer is actually just an abbreviation due to 18th century vernacular slang of putting "er" after shortened words(ie: soccer, rugger ect.) americans call it soccer to tell the difference between gridiron football and association football as gridiron football is considered "the american passion"

Bernhardinski and just when did Arizona return to Mexico (part of North *America* )?
@leveljoe
@leveljoe 6 лет назад
Feroz Shadowfax yep, Mesoamericans played the earliest form of soccer. It spread. The first Europeans in Massachusetts found native Americans playing Pasuckquakkohowog.
@leveljoe
@leveljoe 6 лет назад
Feroz Shadowfax "ball filled with feathers and hair through an opening, measuring only 30-40cm in width, into a small net fixed onto long bamboo canes. " Sure doesn't sound like soccer... This sounds way more familiar to basketball I might add.

Soccer? Lol yeah your free to flop, roll on the ground and cry like a little baby every time the opponent simply touches you!! Futbol does take A LOT of skill no denying that but my god the "dives" every 5 minutes gets ridiculous.

It's a sport where how big or tough or tall you are shouldn't matter the worlds best player is very short. Allowing people to slam against eachother gives an unfair advantage to tall muscular types. And yes once you create a rule people are gonna be using it to their advantage that's called smart play and it only happens occasionally, Definitely not every 5 minutes a lot of the time the injury is very much real.if the referee catches you faking an injury you get a booking so even diving isn't a simple thing at all.
@azithkolli149

@kikotanto2980
@kikotanto2980 6 лет назад
Majd Anbar true, it does give an unfair advantage in many cases to bigger people, although being fast nd able to slip past defenders is a bit easier for smaller people, also, just to be clear, and i haven't, I myself don't actually have anything against football itself and do quite enjoy playing it, my problem with it is the theatre in some occasions of big game football, and the gigantic amount of money it moves, because I don't really think that one should be payed millions to play any sport.
@majd13an
@majd13an 6 лет назад
Kiko Tanto well that's just how big the game has gotten. i mean that's capitalism for ya nothing you could do about that, there thousands of players that can score 10 goals in a *good* league, hundreds that can score 20 and probably about 30 players can do 30 goals. Now you guys like messi and ronaldo and they're scoring 60 goals a season, do you blame them for the demand they created for themselves? Of course they're gonna get millions
