When I was growing up in NC they had the Big 4 tournament. It lasted between 1971-1981. It consisted of UNC, NCSU, Duke and Wake Forest. Was in December I believe. Two winners of the first games would play for the Championship and losers would player for 3rd place. If the Big 4 breaks up, maybe that will come back. Some of the biggest legends of the ACC basketball came from that era. MJ missed it by one year.
SDSU is not a school that can afford big travel. It’s more likely that they end up in the Pac with Stanford and Cal again. They would then only need one more school to make it viable again.
@@fadercreek FedEx $$$$ NIL Middle of SEC recruiting country Growing success in football, 10 straight bowl appearances. Historically strong basketball program. Now owners of the football stadium. $220 million stadium renovation underway. NBA arena as home court. Top 50 TV market.
@@jupitervideos7702not to mention that they are strong in baseball and softball and women’s basketball and soccer along with men’s soccer and other sports. They are Tier-1, Carnegie-1, R1 academic research school and is more academically relevant and diverse than many schools in the ACC, Big12, several schools in the almighty BiG10 and SEC too. I know some nitwit will point out the USNWR rankings, and I don’t go by that because it’s all about money and tuition and very little about education and research and academics from associate degrees to grand masters doctoral degrees as two different rankings systems and entities do focus on strictly academic programs across the board.
I thought that if the ACC survives and expands, they should get Washington State and Oregon state. They are still considered power teams and would help give travel partners to Cal and Stanford.
Memphis! Hot bed of recruiting, 20 million NIL money from FEDEX, 200 million renovation of the Liberty Bowl into a state of the art stadium (construction has started. Within 3 years they would be very likely to be competing at the top of an ACC without FSU and Clemson. Central location for travel.
The Pac 2 (Washington State, Oregon State), San Diego State, Boise State (Football Brand), UNLV (Las Vegas market), either Colorado State (Denver) or Fresno State (Central California Market) for the ACC West Wing. East USF,Memphis, Tulane and maybe ECU or Temple (Definitely ECU). They'll still be in the P4 just on par are slightly behind the Big 12.
I have been saying the same thing almost except I have the three service academies in for all sports as well along with either Memphis or Rice or UTSA to complete the West. ACC EAST: BC, UConn, Syracuse, Army, Navy, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, USF ACC WEST: Tulane, UTSA, SMU, Air Force, San Diego State, Stanford, California, Oregon State, Washington State But the most likely remaining ACC schools are probably: BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, UVA, VaTech, Wake Forest, Duke, Georgia Tech, SMU, Stanford, and California and maybe just maybe Miami Florida University (but doubtful about Miami remains). Now if the following schools remain in the ACC after departing schools are gone, then they might only add the two remaining PAC schools out West and then focus on Florida and South Carolina presence before adding service academies and UCONN and San Diego State and even Tulane but a second Texas school or Memphis are very much in contention for consideration no matter what. Don’t be surprised if two to four Sun Belt schools get the nod regardless of the outcome either. They may very well do that before adding UCONN, Tulane, San Diego State, and anyone out West.
SDSU cannot afford to travel to the east. They will end up in a rebuilt pac 10. Stanford and Cal will come back and SDSU will be added which would give them 5 schools. They could go after someone like Gonzaga and maybe one more smaller school to make it work.
Why do people think that when the ACC loses Florida St, Clemson, UNC, Duke, and Miami, That ACC can just bring in USF,Memphis, Boise state, or some other G5 SMU caliber schools ??? NO !!!, ESPN (ABC) nor will Fox the main broadcasters of College Football won't paid top dollar for G5 schools !!! The money is going to P2, Big 12, Notre Dame. ACC is already in a terrible media deal. How in the world do you think they're going to maintain what they have with their marquee programs gone 🤔 Of course, you know Pittsburgh Syracuse Louisville NC STATE Virginia schools are on the phones or emails trying to ploy their future. Welcome to the 21st century. College football, like so many other things, will never be the same !!!
I can see this, was great in the Big East. Would reunite WVU/Pitt rivalry. FWIW: the war on I-4 rivalry was great and USF to the Big12 would make sense too. Probably would've happened the last go around if USF wasn't terrible. They're making strides now.
When the state funded the ACCs HQ move from Greensboro to Charlotte, they made it possible, but required the conference to ALWAYS have 4 North Carolina schools in the conference. So schools like App St., ECU, and Charlotte actually have a great shot of getting in.
I'll play along...let's say the ACC had 6 openings I'd suggest the following. 1. Oregon State 2. Washington State These 2 are the most obvious choices and at the very least your still adding P5/4 teams...we know their tv deal isn't going to break the bank but if you can keep P4 status you can build. 3. Tulane You need to give a travel partner for SMU 4. Boise State 5. San Diego State Complete the west wing (6 schools) 6. UCONN Perfect location, growing football, basketball powerhouse
In the end I think the group of 5 will be its own separate thing and the new d1 will be the sec and bigten as the power 2 and the acc and big12 will be the new group of 2 with each conference at 20 teams each
Yeah uconn is a perfect fit for the acc because of their basketball programs decent academic and a east coast school. Also they need a new football stadium on campus.
@@jonm4501 the ACC is letting in such amazing football programs as Stanford! and Cal! at some point you got to focus on the thing you're actually good at which is oh I don't know basketball? the Rent isn't terrible Miami plays in a stadium even further away from their campus, none of the teams mentioned besides USF have academics of the quality UConn does Connecticut makes so much sense regionally, historically when they're in a power conference with peers in their region they've been a quality football team, most of these teams don't have any extensive history with the ACC unlike UConn, UConn make sense in almost every way you look at it

The only schools that may have the athletic budget are USF, UCONN, SDSU & maybe Memphis if FedEx can lobby like W. Bush & Condi did for Stanford and SMU.
SDSU had no way of paying their exit fee when they tried to leave for the Pac. Their brand new stadium is embarassing empty. The revenue's are not there. Unless the ACC offers a big increase in annual revenue, they won't be able to support cross country travel.

Clemson and FSU are going BIG. UNC, Virginia, WVU, Kansas will go SEC. The ACC will add USF, UCF, Memphis, maybe Tulane and Notre Dame. The ACC won't die.
Syracuse, Pitt, Virginia, VT, WF, Duke, NCST, BC and GT should merge with the Big East and UConn for a new ACC. Mid football conference but dangerous basketball. Cal, Stanford and SMU should head back west and take Memphis, Tulane and UsF with them for a New PAC
Clemson will go to the SEC. Florida State is gone, either to the SEC or Big Ten. I think they ultimately choose the SEC as part of a settlement with the ACC and ESPN. North Carolina wants out, but having to drag NC State along complicates things. I think the SEC winds up with both of them as they have a little more room for additions. With UNC gone, Virginia goes to the Big Ten. Having lost out on Florida State, the Big Ten adds Miami. The Big XII adds Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, and Virginia Tech. The ACC (7 full + Notre Dame) adds South Florida, Memphis, Temple, UConn, Tulane, Washington State, and Oregon State. ESPN can still leverage having the ACC network in Florida and Pennsylvania, and then adds Tennessee, Louisiana, Oregon, Connecticut, and Washington to the ACCN's territory for in-state rates. Having lost three, the American adds FIU, Louisiana Tech, and MTSU. C-USA adds Austin Peay, Tarleton State, and UTRGV. The WAC collapses with the remaining Texas schools (Abilene Christian, Stepehen F. Austin, and UT-Arlington) heading to the Southland. Utah Tech, Southern Utah, and Utah Valley join the Summit; Tech and Southern play ASUN football. Cal Baptist orchestrates a merger between the WAC and WCC to take advantage of the remaining WAC NCAA tournament credits and exit fees. The WAC then takes the WCC name.
I could see a time when the big college football teams break away from the NCAA completely, just like the Premier League. Imagine a 64 team top tier broken into four 16 team conferences. Then you have a 24 team knockout tournament at the end of the season with the 4 conference winners getting a bye in the 1st round.
The question to ask is can the schools mention pay $20 million to athletes on a constant basis? Sure, they would get some money from the t.v. deal, but would that suffice with the amount of teams in the conference? Maybe Memphis, UCF and SDSU. Boise State though?
If the ACC survives and FSU and Miami both leave, then USF will get invited to whatever is left of the ACC. ACC has to have a team in Florida. 2 big ifs.
If the ACC loses only 2-3 members they won't add anyone. If it is more then I think Wazzu and Oregon St are the top two picks assuming Cal and Stanford are still in. After those two Memphis/SDSU/USF/CSU will be considered based on need.
If the top teams leave to the SEC and Big10 (FSU, Clem, UNC, Mia), the ACC media contract will be renegotiated. The new deal would only pay $15-20 million. This is why all the mid-teer teams would want to go to the Big 12. The top targets of the Big 12 will be: Louisville, Pitt, VA, VA Tech, NC St, Duke, GA Tech. And it would depend on if the Big 12 wants to go to 20 or 22. Why would any of the ACC teams choose to stay if they could make twice as much money in the Big 12? And the Big 12 will want to expand to put themselves in the strongest position possible for whatever future changes come. The leftovers in the ACC will likely band together with the top schools from the rest of the group of 5, and the PAC-2 to form the clear top conference from the group of 5. And it will still be called the ACC. Depending on how many teams go to the SEC and Big 10, the rest will absolutely want to go to the Big 12.
Rutgers has no athletic history at all. UConn has better basketball, baseball, soccer, and hockey. And UConn had more success in Big East football than Rutgers (two conference championships).
UNC, Miami and UVA are the only 3 teams the Big 10 covets. Of course ND is the most coveted of all but they are Independent in Football. Every time you mention UNC you tie in Duke and sometimes NCSU. There are no ties contractually. UND-Duke rivalry is going no where. They are 8 miles apart. The only question will they play home and home each year. I say yes.
Miami and UVA did not qualify for BIG from the network. BIG can’t go past 20 until they restructure their TV deal near 2030. BIG will take FSU and Clemson then have to stop. Then the SEC will take 4 UNC, KU, UVA and probably VT.
You are absolutely wrong and incorrect. FSU, Miami, and either Clemson or UNC or both if get the green light from the three networks involved with coverage of the BiG10 to be added if possible. But UNC to the SEC or staying put are the most likely scenarios to unfold. It is almost a foregone conclusion that the two Florida schools are headed to the BiG10. The BiG10 will have a spot open for Notre Dame always most likely. Virginia is either staying in the ACC or they are heading to the SEC later on themselves. Now I don’t think this movement happens this summer or next summer. But announcing that in 2026 or later, the ACC schools will depart to the true P2A4 conferences and leave the M2A4 conferences behind.
Wrong! The B10 wants to be in the Southeast in the Southeast largest state with CFB powers and rivals. Miami and FSU gives the B10 tv partners, rivals, national brands and weekly matchups in the B10 in FB! Your not getting that with UNC and UVA!
I think the Big 12 will go for Louisville and Pitt. Those two would fit pretty well with the Big 12, moreso than the SEC or B1G. I also think the ACC might consider Oregon State and Washington State, emphasis on the "might" because it depends on the costs of travel
B12 cant really do anything until those 2 schools comes to them 1st..conferences cant poach schools..all they can do is listen to schools that approach them 1st..
I think like the Pac 2 the ACC still can keep there P5 status if they can replenish schools that they lost. Which is more than likely the Pac 2 (which is a must, and fringe G5 schools trying to get in the P5/4 conference in USF,Memphis, Tulane, San Diego State, Boise State, UNLV,Colorado State, ECU, Temple, Fresno State. They could still like pac 2 keep the remainder Power status with the number of teams and could become a either 20 to 24 team conference. Its there only survivability.
What do you think about adding buffalo to the conference by far the most attractive Mac school so they would have a traveling partner with Syracuse for Olympic sports. They have a top five academics in the group of five. They would need to build a new stadium, but I’d like to see them move out of the MAC.
These conferences aren't in control the networks are. IMO the ACC will survive. ESPN will turn it into the SEC's little brother. A conference for the second place teams so to speak.
Virginia Tech to the Big 12 - rekindle a conference rivalry with West Virginia and gives Cincinnati another closer travel partner Miami to Big 10 makes a ton of sense (AAU School, prestigious football program, Miami TV market opens up FL recruiting pipeline) FSU and Clemson to SEC UNC, Duke, GT, UVA, BC, Syracuse, Louisville, NC State, Cal, Stanford, WF all stay I do like your idea of adding Boise State and San Diego State, potentially add Colorado State, WSU, and Oregon State to make a western division with Stanford and Cal - and just rename the conference.
Forgetting the ACC for a moment then ill comeback to it. I'd say the Big Ten needs to make a push to bring in Texas A&M, Texas Tech and TCU thus turning Texas into a Big Ten state overnight. Texas A&M and Texas are brands that are roughly the same size, with the Aggies being the growing brand while the longhorn have been stagnant for over 30 years. Then you add in the states 3rd biggest brand, Texas Tech, to tip the SEC vs Big Ten balance towards the Big Ten. Finally they stick a dagger in the SEC's heart by putting a Big Ten team in the middle of DFW with TCU. What happens then is the Big 12 loses their DFW school, making SMU a must add for the Big 12. Thus the ACC loses another team.
UT and A&M are no where near the same commodity, UT has never viewed a&m as their rival, it has always been OU A&m has a complex of being little brother, so they could possibly be pulled, but doubtful Plus how do you figure UT is irrelevant-- they played in the playoff last year and went to OT, the will be ranked in the top 3 this season, and I believe Vegas has them as the 2nd best overall odds to win the natty
@joeylawn36111 The Big Ten wants Texas A&M because, unlike the SEC, the Big Ten has given up on being a regional brand and has embraced being a nationwide conference. How much does Texas A&M want the Big Ten? Don't know, but the interest is more than zero.
Won’t plug another podcast but a few days ago a BIG one had the best one yet. Laid out the process and with almost certainty could tell you what the next 5 years will looks like. Here to quick version. The TV networks provided a list of schools that qualify based on football value Then BIG presidents decide who to invite. Right now only FSU is approved as a full member. Clemson and yes…TAMU are the other interested parties that partially qualify (insert hysterical laugh here). UNC, UVA, Miami, GT, KU and Stanford do not qualify. The best guess is FSU and Clemson in the next year followed by 4 to SEC (UNC, KU, UVA and probably 1 more school in ACC (guessing VT). B12 does its thing and everyone goes home. When the ACC implodes, ND will be jointly offered a deal to stay independent BUT they have to play3/4 in both P2 conferences. Finally near 2030 SEC/BIG may jointly negotiate and scheduling TV deal and will scare the world and will jointly raid the B12 of 8!schools. That’s the final nail in the coffin. Then a scheduling agreement will be released and they will do their own thing….and make their own rules. Thats what the ”advisory committee” is working on now. Game Over
ACC should add Utah, UConn, South Florida, Oregon State & Washington State if just Clemson & fsu leave. if more go add in Boise State, Memphis, possibly Gonzaga, Navy, Army & VCU as partial members. Big 12 may lose Kansas and West Virginia to the SEC and Arizona & Colorado to the B10.
If the ACC loses Florida state, Clemson, Miami, Duke, North Carolina ,NC state. The ACC will be another G5 or 6 conference!!! With the announcement today, there is no G5 schools out there that can bring 20 million dollars annually to keep them as a P4 conference. Remember, those schools are leaving the ACC because of revenue I believe Louisville, Pittsburgh Syracuse would definitely go to the Big 12.
You do realize that Maryland left the ACC years ago for the Big10 right? And Penn State isn't leaving the Big10 to make less money in the ACC which will probably dissolve in a few years anyway. Also, why would UConn and Villanova go ACC when UNC and Duke will likely be gone in a couple of years?
@@d-roc1576 I know Maryland Penn state and Rutgers are are in the big 10 for more money. But it dosen't quite make sense on a geographical reason since the big 10 is primarily a midwestern conference and those 3 schools are on the east coast. Uconn and Villanova make some sense because of their basketball programs and are east coast schools.
@@albertsancho5909 Geography went out the window a long time ago with conference realignment. Think about it; you've got Cal, Stanford and SMU in the ACC and half the old PAC12 in the Big10 now. Nobody is going ACC for basketball with strong rumors of UNC and Duke leaving once Clemson and FSU exit to a better conference.
Big 12 will take the next 4 best after SEC and B10 scoop up UNC, FSU and Clemson. B12 will be interested in Miami, Louisville, West Virginia, NC State, Duke, Pitt, VA, or VA tech. They will only pick up 4 though.
Wish there was just two conferences like the NFL does it. Have half of the US be in one conference and the other half be in the other. Tired of this nonsense.
that would make sense..BUT, that would require a collective bargaining agreement that would give all those schools the exact same payout...schools like Texas, Bama ect, arent gonna be ok with schools like iowa state being paid the same $$ they are ..it would take away their financial advantage...same reason why MLB will never have that..Dodgers, Red sox and Yankees dont want to lose their financial advantages and being limited on how much they can spend
There is literally no correlation of where schools are located and the SEC, ACC anymore. San Diego and Atlantic or Boise and Atlantic should not be used in the same sentence.
Cal and Stanford don't like Boise State and UNLV due to academics and don't want to be associated with them (they still have not learned their lessons from the fall of the PAC-12). If I am the ACC I would want Cal and Stanford to find a new home and then bring in Memphis and South Florida as their replacements.
If the ACC loses BOTH FSU and Miami, USF to have the ACC Network remain on basic in Florida is a given. Ok me school you overlooked: Tulane. A travel partner for SMU, good football and superior academics.
Hey Bonehead... How can Tulane not be in your G5 teams to join the ACC? Top team in the AAC. New Orleans market. They are a better fit than 5 of the 7 teams on that list... You got 5 west coast teams on that list.. Cmon man..
Hopefully, the NCAA will declare Bankruptcy and fold, and replaced with another organization that aligns with normal American business values, not the BS we put up with in the past from them.

At this point they need to just change the name because the name ACC is already a lie when not all teams coming in are on the Atlantic Coast. Stupid imo.
He acts like the Duke-UNC rivalry would be impossible across different conferences, when in reality there are plenty or rivalries that are across different conferences.
Actually, the financial penalty decreases the more teams that leave!! SMU, Cal & Stanford aren't official ACC members til August 1st. So once the ACC drops 14 teams (which would happen once FSU & Clemson leave) the penalties & restrictions are reduced significantly.
The thing is if fsu and Clemson do pay to leave, the ACC is losing over 35% of their viewership, and ESPN will have no desire to keep paying schools accordingly to the current tv contract. ESPN will exercise the composition clause to renegotiate the contract, where teams could then jump to the big 12 or the power two at a discounted rate without any exit fee.
The ACC can lose FSU, Clemson, UNC and Virginia and still survive by refilling with the best of G5 like Memphis, Boise, SDSU and USF. The B12 was on life support and added a bunch of mid to low P5s and they survived. Memphis is better than 90% of those they added. Just saying.
@mikem957 the difference is that the big 12 added decent teams such as Utah and UCF. The ACC won't be adding quality teams and remain a Power conference. It's delusional at best to think the ACC will survive the current sports environment without its blue blood programs. The revenue gap is already big and only growing.
