What a great segment. Thank you for posting this. If you do a retrospective like this on old hardware (1070-Ti, 8700k, Vega56, 1700x) I'd definitely watch.

@@mikeycrackson 100% I benched my old 4790k (w/2400mhz DDR3) and it's quicker than my 6700k (w/2800 DDR4), but slower than the 3300x. What an epic CPU, I'd definitely be down for a retrospective on the 4790k and see how it compares today. Hell, any of the old legends would be great...Q6600, 2500k, 4790k, 8350k, etc.

Ive had the 3300x since launch last year (newegg managed to have some in stock and i was at the right place at the right time), but I havent really used it, let alone make a build out of it because of its rarity. Over the last couple months, newegg and b&h photo has had restocks of this unicorn randomly, not sure how or why, but there are more in the wild now than there were last year. Bought this around August when it suddenly appeared in a local shop (middle EU). It is practically uses the same methods as the new gen, just on 4 cores and despite me going for it as a filler until the 5000 series, I got fond of it and ended up holding on to it - especially after founding out it's unique manufacturing process and overall mythical nature later. This chip delivers 3700x level of performance in certain titles, so for a gaming build, the value is just unbeatable. Paired it with an rtx 2060 itx card (was also considered a rare find even before the gpu shortage) and got a small jewelry box of technology:)

For my primary desktop (gaming and productivity - office, web-dev, some audio/video) I got a 3700x for just under MSRP (codes/cashback) at launch (I upgraded my 1600x on an x370 board from 2017) and loved it. Very impressed at the time for the price. Zero complaints since. Mid last year, I was looking for an upgrade to my i5 3470 based HTPC and I wanted to get a one of these 3300x models, as they looked like such good value, but they weren't in stock anywhere. I ended up getting an R3 3100 and an A320 board for £10 more than the price of the 3300x. Added a cheap 500gb nvme and 16gb of 3200 cl16 which worked at xmp out of the box. Frankly, it's been stellar for the price, and my housemate has been using it as his primary PC for coding and web-dev recently. They're little workhorses with decent ram and storage. It's handled all games I've thrown at it on my 4k60 TV, as my main desktop takes care of Cyberpunk. Everything else has been great on the little trooper, as it only needs to do 60fps and on cinematic, couch-games. As much as I wanted the extra 10% in clocks and latency of the 3300x, it would have cost me 40-50% more in the end. Eventually I'll swap the 3700x into the a320 HTPC build (microATX) and sell off the 3100 and x370 (ATX) in time to upgrade my main system to AM5 or equivalent (DDR5), where I'll go big with a 16c/32t 64gb monster. The ability for this process of conscious downcycling is the single best advantage of AM4's platform in the end for me.

I wouldn't put it in the same boat as Zen 3. Zen 3 was a radical improvement. The 3300X is great, but not Zen 3 great. And in our tests, it doesn't "easily beat the 7700K." Traded blows, sure. And while the i7's clocks were higher, the 3300X simply isn't capable of frequencies approaching 5GHz on air like that of its Intel counterpart.

@@GregSalazar I'm referring performance wise to a benchmark of Gamers Nexus back then, which had way more tests and data. And I didn't say it is like Zen 3, I said it is comparable to Zen 3 and named it Zen 2.5, which is pretty accurate imo. Else, explain to me why it is so easily comparable to a 3700X or even faster in games, and usually beats a 7700K. Again referring to Gamers Nexus. And clocks? Nobody cares, performance is everything that matters. Overclocking isn't that important or relevant for the majority of people and Zen gets a lot through that as well in the region of memory tuning. Again, Gamers Nexus did a thorough test with everything including OC/memory optimization and compared it to everything, I'm only referring to their data. Zen 3 had "radical improvements " in the sense of unified cores. The 3300X is exactly that, because it doesn't do any inter-connect communication, it is basically unified. Hence why the 3100 sucks comparably. I dont have to explain this to you, but you had to say that Zen 3 is radically different, which simply isn't true. Not compared to a 3300X. If and when AMD releases a 5300X we will see what the difference is, but it will be smaller IPC wise I would bet, compared to other products like 3700X vs 5800X etc. The big upside of Zen 3 is when you use the big CPUs because of the unification and also the clearly higher average clocks. Take away both upsides and I bet the 5300X won't be that much faster, maybe 10%, same clocks. But it is kinda unlikely that AMD will release a 5300X anytime soon, at least not for that price. The funny thing is, the 5300X would not be any different performance wise to a 5100, the only difference would be clocks.

Since the begining of the shortage, I've shotdown my main computer that have a 3800X, 32gb of ram and a RTX 2070 (for fear of breaking it) and daily my 3100 chip with a 1650 non-super that I got at MSRP at the time. This chip is amazing still and get the gaming done. Overclocked at high voltage that is...

Apparently they all migrated to South Korea. Bought one for my friend which came to $210 CAD total which is about ~$80 cheaper than a 3600 with a good sale and likely still cheaper than it's even been when listed on Canadian retailers. Seeing as how it's only being paired with a 1060 3GB I picked up on the market it would likely just be a waste of money especially when WoW is essentially the only game she plays.

Going for $145 now. Not quite the launch price, but cheap enough for it to be worth it now imo. Unfortunately still can’t find the 3100 for anywhere near its proper price

Some 3300X CPUs have come back in stock at Newegg and B&H for $150 , makes me wonder if they just came out of a warehouse someplace or if they are still being made?

I recently bought my son a “used” new built gaming pc and was wondering if you did any recommendations on how good stuff is. I have all the specs and did some homework and from what I seen I did save money compared to building it with the same components myself but still don’t know if it will be good enough or if you’d have any suggested upgrades

“The R3 3300X was never sold at its MSRP” R5 1600AF: who called? (okay to be fair the 1600AF was sold at MSRP for some time, too bad the pandemic came before it became widespread, improvements to manufacturing like the XT series probably meant that there’s just more good dies that AMD can sell at a higher price for a 3600)

At 120 bucks it's the 10400F imo. You could buy the i5 for several months at that price, at least in Europe.

Not msrp but Asian markets such as China and South Korea seem to have gotten quite a few of them. Looking up the 3300x on aliexpress and ebay right now seems to get you sellers with these in stock shipping from those 2 former countries.

Was going to get this CPU when it got announce but hot damn the pc shop at our town won't sell me one unless it's bundle with MoBo, which jacked up the price for me and I didn't even need the extra baggage. Sadge that I'm still stuck with my 2200G up to this day.

Saw this 4 core CPU $120, the 6 core 3600 $190, and 2600X $89. I went 2600X and it turned out to be late manufactured gold binned. Ican OC to 4.3GHz soundly beating 3600 stock CPU-Z scores easily. The numbers dont show the 4 core has a frame time issue causing severe stutter in new core demanding games like Cyberpunk.

So if retailers don't meet the "Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price", then doesn't that look bad on the manufacturer for telling us this price in their official conference/product announcement, and thus wouldn't they want to penalize certain retailers for not trying to meet their set starting price by maybe reducing or even delaying their next shipment of said product to get their point across(Nvidia you know I'm talking about you)?

@5:35 Off course, they are always people who think X, Y and Z. In this case I think most people don't get anything wrong here. They are simply not willing to pay more, unless they really have to. MSRP is a reference for perceived value. :) @7:55 They sell for more, that is for sure. Unless the market is upside down.
