4 vs. 6 Cores for Gaming - Ryzen 3300X or 3600? 

lol i have not seen it in stock at msrp once yet. i just bouught a 3600 for 167 instead. lowest saw 3300x was like 140 so i said f that.

Joker lol , you are lucky to get those prices. All tech components in India are fucking overpriced because of insane custom duties. The 3600 is sold at $250 in the best days and the 3300X starts at $150. Glad I got it before the prices jacked up.

now that you mention it, even as i live in washington state US right next to an amazon warehouse. the ryzen 3 3300x isnt even listed on the amazon website. closest i got was a ryzen 3 3100 and ryzen 3400g . not even 1 reseleller with a ryzen 3300x trying to scalp people

I second this. Also, I think most people also run other programs in the background that eat CPU - browsers, discord, launchers, various music apps etc. One of the reason I upgraded from a quad core even though games were running fine it was because in some games like R6 Siege or Battlefield, the CPU was getting close to 100% making interruptions in Discord because the app wasn't getting enough CPU.

My friends 7600k sits around 67% usage with a few start up programs and windows in the background it does only have 4 cores 4 threads instead of 4 c 8 threads found in the 3300x But having background processes is definitely something to consider

@@benchmarking6875 why do you say that ? I'm planning to get the 3600 for 100$ used. My rig currently is Rx 580 8gb, 24gb ram and ryzen 3 1200 af. Planning to get 30 series card when prices are normal again.

nah 3300x has better single core performance more cores doesnt always mean more fps

​@@slycooper4946 If you plan on keeping your build for a few years you'll be much better off with the two extra cores than you are a 1% single core performance improvement. I've only seen the 3300x in stock once so far in the states too, not even worth the effort.

Yeah, the 3300x and 3600 here is like a 30-40€ difference and the 3600 is almost in stock here. I guess for pure gaming, the 3300x is a great cpu, but as more and more games come out that can take advantage of more than 4 cores/8 threads, the 3600 would still be worth the slightly higher price

​@@Qalibrated Not nessicarily, because as you point out, those games are still likely going to be optimised for a higher core count than your 3600. The 3300x is, if available at or near RRP, a hell of a good fit for a budget gaming machine because most games at present will be optimised for around 4 cores. On a budget, the extra cost of the 3600 is possibly better spent on the GPU (unless you specifically need something that needs a little extra multithreaded performance, like streaming) or on faster RAM in preperation for a future 8c/16t AM4 upgrade And of course, since it's AM4, it'll probably be an easy upgrade later to slot in something with a few more cores in either cases.

cpu cores dont stress over more monitors.....only thing it would effect is your gpu and by so little you wouldnt even notice...

Warzone will love those 12 threads, 4c/8t is pretty much pegged 90-100%.

intempify guess what? FX had shitty single core, and this is a decade later. Quad-core gaming is still viable for now, but if you want any ability to stream at a decent resolution or run background apps with minimal performance hit then hexa-core or better is the way to go. FX isn’t even justifiably comparable in terms of the power extra Ryzen cores provide

Don't worry, think of it as a premium u paid for playing future games in 2021-2022 easy, while with 3300x there may have been some lacking. Plus multitasking benefits u already are reaping. Enjoy

​@@UrDaddy4Real At the time I built the PC I was thinking of using the CPU as a placeholder for a Zen 3 CPU, but now that DDR 5 is just around the corner I might reconsider. I might stretch out the Ryzen 5 3600 out until DDR 5 hits the 8000+ speeds, by then my current rig would be about 3 to 4 years old. Who knows what version of Zen we would be on by then, you never know Intel might be doing something new instead of reworking their 14nm nodes again and again by then as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most game still benefit more from single core, single thread performance than anything. Next up would be dual channel RAM. The reason more cores is better is so you can do everything else in the background without impeding your gaming experience.

@@JustSomeDinosaurPerson yes but that's because you're thinking of games being designed for older CPUs. yes a 4790k with a little overclock can run games pretty well if you just look at numbers, but that's not the whole story. In modern games with many things happening and large number of people like division 2, you do end up using more than 8 cores and the game does run smoother with little to no frame drops and stuttering compared to a 4790k which might have some decent average FPS, but those drops are more jarring and happen more often. If you increase the amount of physics happening, it has a similar effect to having many people fighting at once in a game like division 2. The more a modern game has to do, the more work it can distribute between more cores?

@@2muchjpop Uh...no. The games have to be designed to properly distribute and take advantage of multiple cores and multi-threading. What you are saying doesn't happen automatically and most devs, even triple AAA ones, don't even bother. This is why you can have comparable performance between an i5 and an i9 paired with the same GPU so long as you are only playing the game and doing nothing in the background, with the only drastic measurable difference being their respective single thread and single core performance. I would love for games to take more advantage of multiple and multithreading, but that just still isn't common at all unfortunately.

In my country 🇵🇭 the price difference between a 3300x and 3600 is over 100$. So unless you are actually doing recording and streaming the 3300x is better value.

Bf V uses alll 8 core as my knowledge. Bf 1 uses only 6. 16threads and 32gis of ram is the way if want smoother game on cpu b-necked title.

After have a 8c16t cpu in my rig for the past 4+ years for my use case I cant go below that, unless it's strictly a gaming centric machine. Also 32GB's is now becoming a sweet spot memory wise, which is still a bit nuts imo as alot of titles are using more than 16 if its available.

@@xXDarthBagginsXx its windows allocating 16gb+ if 32gb is available. Doesn't actually use it. Those same games will only use 8-10gb in a system with only 16gb. Nothing maxes out 16gb when 16gb is available. No performance difference between 16gb and 32gb.

I prefer the 3600 just because I like having videos/streams playing on a second monitor, having only 4 cores hurts the frame rate in that scenario

I just built a 3900X rig and still watched it!

the 2080ti will show if the 3300x produces any type of big bottlneck... it doesnt and this shows that a 3300x can effectively be paired with any gpu on the market

integrated graphics can do 150fps on cs. ive never seen someone get 60.

@Nismo I use a 7700K@5.1Ghz and a 2080Ti at 2100 both EK'd. Also fullscreen at 1080p 240Hz using freesync...I don't use vsync nor windowed fullscreen. Also I use NVENC for streaming

@Nismo Nope. Even at 200 tabs no performance hit. My 24 Core Xeon does better heavy worklod though, like processing 5 videos simultaneously

yes there is bottlenecks. amd cpu = bottleneck for high fps gaming. 95% of the time.

@@Dr.WhetFarts yes, hence the quotes. But for my use it was a huge upgrade. FPS is a lot higher and more stable and now I get everything out of my high refresh monitor. I'm going to buy Zen3 anyway (most likely) and will sell this dated milk with a decent price ;)
