Interesting to see I'm not the only one. Came back to Germany from a 3 month stay in China (Beijing & Xinjiang) and had a big reverse culture shock. I know Germany since earily childhood and it's no secret that Germany is not the most friendly, positive or hospitable country, despite being a rich country (for some wealthy folks at least). However it still shocked me because after staying for some longer time in China I just got used to the positive vibes, feeling of safety, amazing and cheap transportation, simplified and fast processes, and kindheartedness in China. Don't get me wrong, I was happy to see Germany again, but the positive vibe turned into a rather depressive one immediately at arrival in Germany: Everyone just stares aggressively and quietly at everyone, as if everyone is suspicious and their enemy. Paying customers are commanded to leave the cafe/restaurant, just because they finished their (overpriced and tasteless) sandwhich and coffee 5 or so minutes ago and just wanted to relax a couple minutes after eating/drinking (even though still plenty of empty tables/benches), homeless people and drug addicts everywhere, asking you for empty bottles or money, some of them aggressive and following you, police is very aggressive (I'd never get the idea to ask them for help as it usually brings you trouble. In China no problem), train staff shouting at customers for accidentally buying the wrong but equally expensive ticket (our ticket system is HELLA complicated with dozens of ticket-types for the same route). And of course problems with the trains again (even though we pay a fortune on train tickets for even very short distances) and good luck getting your money back hahahaha. Finally on arrival at my city's trainstation I get greeted by the sight of my bicycle missing parts (stolen seat) and having air-empty tires (some people cut them, I guess just for fun or because people love to ruin other people's days here?). Those things happened also before my China trip but I always kept quiet and sometimes I even thought that it's my fault and I deserve the cold treatment in Germany, because I did something wrong (Nope, I didn't do anything wrong). It's only after my China trip that I FULLY realize it's TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE and we should never tolerate what's going on in the west. My experience in China gave me more confidence to speak up and defend myself.

I'm from Germany, too. But guess what, if you're friendly most will be friendly, too. Especially going shopping or in any other service industry. I don't think all are nice and positive in Chin I get curious but also hostile stares. But also have been refused to be served at the supermarket. So, it's so so... I get the safety part, but I wouldn't walk alone at night in China, either. I think big cities in Germany are a little like this, but never had any issues at night living in Leipzig. I, however, really love working here and not living paycheck to paycheck.

Another thing I noticed about Life in China VS "in the West": I felt RICH in China, but NOT because of my financial situation (I'm a normal working-class guy without much money). I felt rich simply because China spends SO DAMN MUCH on nice things for the public everywhere! Like really, really fancy nice things that one can experience either for free or for a reasonable "working-class-kid-friendly" prices. Even in the "poorer" neighbourhoods, because the government actually takes care of it's people. Every day I could see, experience, eat, buy, consume amazing things in China that wouldn't even be affordable for some upper-middleclass-ish people in the West. For example, I ate at the same restaurants where hyper-rich western government members went to eat, I rode amazing public transportation for almost no money at all, studied in book-stores and libraries for free, which looked like palaces and had guards in fancy traditional uniforms and red carpets infront of the door. My first instinct "oh this must be some inaffordable rich-people place!", but nah... it's free to spend your whole day inside, read, relax, sleep and study. And many more experiences that would cost me a fortune here (or are just not available here for us normal folks at all). Even the "poor" people China enjoy more peace, stability, freedom, cultural activities etc., than most well paid people do in the West. And I love the fact that in China you don't have to enjoy it in isolation or with just some snobbish, elitist rich-kids. The vibe is so much better when everyone is having a good time instead of a tiny minority of rich people. I love and miss that about China.

The high prices, the old infrastructure in desperate need of repairs, etc. As a woman, I actually felt safe walking the streets of Beijing at night while now that I'm back in the US, I always have an anxiety spike once it gets dark outside😭There have been so many incidents of people getting robbed on and around my school campus...

My wife and I have just moved back to the UK from Hong Kong as we’re expecting our first baby and wanted to be with family, but we’ve been absolutely shocked at the state of the country! It’s not at all what I remember, with extortionate living costs and high crime rates. We’re already looking at when we can return to HK. I never thought I’d say this, but I genuinely believe our child will have a much better (and safer) upbringing there and a much better education through the international schools! I think it's easy to say that people don't want to work but not consider that companies are laying people off and cutting hours to cut costs. So many places near me replaced cashiers with self check out because it's cheaper to not pay humans. Self check out doesn't need health insurance, break time, or days off. In some cases, it costs more to go to work than to keep applying for jobs because the gas price to get to work is too expensive and day care is also unaffordable. Unemployment is only available for 6 months so IDK how anyone is surviving but I have a lot of compassion for those who are trying to do better.
@AleeseLightyear
@AleeseLightyear 11 месяцев назад
You're VERY right. All of this is so easy for me to say because I haven't actually lived it nor has it effected me. I had no idea unemployment was only available for 6 months?!? When I lived in NYC I was on and off unemployment for like 4 years, I know if I lived in the USA full time right now, I'd be hurting just like everyone else.
@grog1138
@grog1138 11 месяцев назад
I'm co-signing your comment. People are also being fired for bogus reasons so companies don't have to do severance pay. They are taking the chance that the fired employee don't want to spend money and time on hiring a lawyer because of wrongful termination. Then these companies will gaslight everyone by saying "no one wants to work anymore." I was terminated last year. Had to sign an NDA in order to get my 2 months severance (because they liked me). And it's been really hard to find work. I'm lucky that my family and friends are very understanding and supportive. Also, I hardly leave the house.
@frecklesnfrolics
@frecklesnfrolics 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely! I think things really changed while you were away and so it's been really bad here. I live in CA and we only get 6 months of unemployment and it can't be because we quit, it would have to be due to layoff. In some cases, companies like to cut hours and abuse the people they decide to keep by making them work multiple roles. It must have been so hard being in lockdown in China, too, and I hope you had way more support than us @@AleeseLightyear

@@grog1138 It's pretty crazy how they started the whole "no on wants to work anymore!" and then cut hours to avoid paying benefits that are meant for full time workers, won't hire anyone new to prevent burn out, and then expect people to be more productive. Yep! You're right about firing people and then making them sign NDAs or they'll hold your severance hostage. I'm sorry that things have been so rough. I also lost my job during the pandemic and it took so long to land something new. Wishing you the best on your job search.

Every dept is understaffed and I’ve been wondering for the longest time how people are getting by and/or what jobs people are acquiring. The applications we DO receive are people who are opting for availability that isn’t conducive with peak store hours so they don’t get a callback.

We have certainly lost our way politically, socially, and certainly morally. I lived for two years in China and it was absolutely wonderful. Inflation (corporate greed) has gone NUTS and they refuse to pay more, which is logical because they can't make record profits every single year without charging more for services and then paying employees properly. Aleese you're gonna become a communist if you pay attention to that too much!! It’s quite ignorant to call China “homogenous” when they have Russian looking people to the Northeast, Middle Eastern-looking people to the west, dark-skinned Tibetan people to the south-west and dark-skinned Southeast Asian-looking people to the southeast, not to mention all of their diverse cultures and languages. This contrast shows that China is a very well governed country with the government having majority of the people's interests in mind. This is why the Chinese people have the highest trust in its government according to multiple Western surveys (and the Western media won't publish). Law and order is the freedom that the US doesn't have. While the Chinese people cannot speak ill of the ruling party and have a good (and continually improving) life at the same time, the people in the US also make the Faustian bargain of having the freedom of speech but falling into the lowest common denominator of incompetency and severe division of the people. What's the use of freedom of speech when you cannot make ends meet and don't have a sense of safety? I am not saying that China has a better system, but it's not US's place to denigrate China on ideological ground given its own dismal reality, and to suppress China and to wish it to fail is outright immoral.

China really isn't that much better than the US right now. They are in a mess. Right now millions of Chinese are moving out of China. It is so bad that the government has to do capital control. If everything is as picture perfect as you said, why are there so many people moving out? I hate it when people start comparing countries with each other. America itself isn't a bad country. People just love to exaggerate and make it seem like it's armageddon when it's not even close.

@@pandabearoceanpark I'm sure. But it's nothing compared to the United States. China is a huge country with many many cultures in that continent. It's like 4 United States in one continent. But so many people have been lifted out of poverty and in Asia it's considered to be embarrassing if people steal. People are looked down upon and it's shameful. In America there is no shame. So for a country with a billion people you will find majority of people returning wallets that they found and many many places where you can leave your computer or wallet on the table while you step out. Context matters. When you have a few incidents and paint the whole country a certain way it's not really accurate compared to the actual experience. It's not just the cameras it's the culture. And many people have been lifted out of poverty there. Even in South Korea they did an experiment many years ago where they had a hidden camera to see what people do with bags or purses left in the train. Almost everybody returned it to the train stations lost and found. With a few people returning it to the actual owner. That is what Asia is really like. That's why it's no surprise where you have so many stores where they don't even have a cashier. It's all automated and people just go and pay honorably.

I was in a small town for a little bit visiting family and there were no stoplights and no fast food places or Walmart. They have to travel an hour for those places. They have a small grocery store. I would love to move abroad for a while maybe after I get my tech degree.

Funny thing about gas price. Theres a song from a group called Out of Eden amd the song is called Day Like Today. I think the staff shortages are not just a result of Covid. Our labor force participation rates are not bad and our unemployment is extremely low. Our actual population is smaller now than it was before the pandemic (not just because people died, but because we had been actively restricting immigration for years before the pandemic) and the jobs we offer people are all part time. If we hired people full time instead of part time, it would reduce the shortages. But since we make health care part of a job benefits package and we expect employers to pay over time, they are not incentivized to hire people full time. They are incentivized to hire people for part time and then have them work 37 hours a week without sick time or health care. The stats at the beginning when talking about how much it costs to live and how much American’s make is a little misleading. It was said that American’s make average $75k, but they don’t. That’s the median household income and most households include multiple earners which means the numbers are even worse than your opening sequence would suggest. It takes two incomes to not make enough money to live in America.

It is sorry to say, but Americans, including even the lower working class, are still the beneficiaries of the international division of labor, that means, theoretically on average, each person receives more benefits from society as compared to the world's average level of payment. The problem lies in the dysfunctional mechanism caused by the monopoly of power and capital, which has destroyed the positive feedback mechanism of payoffs and rewards, as well as social moral

As for people “not wanting to work”: the harsh reality is the wages are stagnant; profit is up but so is theft/shrink; everywhere is understaffed working with a skeleton crew which directly contributes to overworking/burning out the employees WHO DO SHOW UP until they end up sick and tired from stress. Someone is always hiring and everyone’s raise is the next job. It’s a vicious cycle. The economy should’ve collapsed during the start of the pandemic and it didn’t. Instead, corporations and business for the most part amassed so much profit. Nothing changed after toxic workplaces were exposed and now those same places strong arm their old habits. People “aren’t working” they’re moving on to the next job continuously. It doesn’t benefit anyone to stay in one place when wages are stagnant.

@Na2Ocean

This sad rhetoric of people “having more money” came from fear of losing everything. That’s one piece of the sad American puzzle that doesn’t account for all of the other (financial) problems people were/are facing. The economy should’ve collapsed and corporations should’ve crumbled but they thrived and amassed record breaking profits. I don’t know what kind of people got stimmys to live on AND SAVE but it sure wasn’t a lot of people. Numbers may not lie but they can be manipulated.

I am Asian American from CA and I remember when I visited Japan for 1 year I had culture shock. They probably can't really tell since I may look similar to them and only learned that I'm not one of the local when I speak English. Every country has pros and cons. I remember how when I came back to the U.S., I didn't like how the streets were dirty and crimes being high. I'm always driving in the U.S. while train systems are so convenient in Japan. I felt relatively safe in Japan and notice that people don't worry about others stealing their shoes and umbrellas when placed outside of their doorways in Japan. Most Japanese were quite efficient with things as they're always on a time crunch. I had reverse shock when I came back to the U.S. when the teller at the bank was super friendly and chatty with me while helping me, which is one of the things I realized I miss because people in Japan do not want to do small talks or engage beyond what they need to do for you while they are working. I also love the diversity in the U.S.
