Foreign animated movies, anime in particular, tend to do poorly here because the content is often "too violent" for children and adults assume an animation is "only for kids" so they don't see it either. Puppetry had the same problem and was originally an adult medium as well. Jim Henson sort of did that to himself though and he purportedly regretted and hated the "kids only" stigma that he created regarding puppets.

And thus, Nickelodeon and Disney came to be to save us from the inappropriate stuff. Several decades later, Cartoon Network became to be.

This was more or less me watching Utawarerumono. Many characters had tails, but the tails essentially did nothing, save for one early gag in the show. Meanwhile, in the follow-up series, a soft reboot focusing on a new cast, called "Utawarerumono: The False Faces", the animation was handled by an entirely different studio, and they actually bothered to make the characters' tails do stuff, and add them as just another tool for the characters' expressive animations.

Here's one word: T A I L B O N E Avatar (James Cameron) did this right. His film had humanoid aliens with their tails in the correct place.

A really easy way to draw the tail correctly is to just look at a picture of a human skeleton. The tail bone is where it should come out. There's plenty of pics that show the skin with it, so it makes it even easier!

Muppet Babies, the Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, She-Ra, Thundercats, Alvin and the Chipmunks, they were all big favorites of mine, and I loved watching them every Saturday morning. They had plots and adventure, still wrapped up in a moral lesson but I enjoyed watching it. Those kinds of cartoons died out in the mid-90s, after Rugrats, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Animaniacs had their heyday. Nowadays cartoons on TV are 90% school lessons and 10% story (Dora, I'm looking at you), and it stinks.

Mr. Diugh I must bring up this fact. Ralph bakshi and George Lucas worked on two films together that came out the same year. For George it was Star Wars And for Ralph it was Wizards They would collaborate on the films, George saying that Ralph should change the name of his movie (which was originally suppose to be called wizard wars) so it wouldn’t clash with his own film that had a somewhat similar title. Not to mention that wizards would kick off mark hamil’s voice acting career!

She was far sleeker than all others in the film. Kinda the opposite of gross to me.

I personally found the horse lady kinda gross because they made her mouth look like a tube with lips at the end.

I always take stories like this one and Catcher in the Rye as more of observations of a particular mindset and the character's interactions with other people. Lots of people nowadays feel the need for characters to be 100% likable and "unproblematic". I think that as long as the tone of the film implies criticism and cynicism towards such a character, writers should feel free to write a character however they like.

MothmanGhost Very well said, sir. I couldn’t agree more. I would go so far as to surmise that the hoi polloi expect the same from celebrities as well as fictional characters. Someone could be the most gifted singer or actor or author or comedian but once people find out they kicked a dog when they were in the fifth grade, now their opinion of that person is depreciated and it compromises their entire value of that person. I believe that we, as a people, are flawed by nature and one’s flaws should endear them to us because I’ve never met a perfect person in my lifetime and I never expect to. Instead of outcasting people for their foibles we should embrace them. Everyone has skeletons in their respective closet.

You're not wrong in saying that... But I will point out that the movie actually turns Fritz and other associated characters more likeable (even if marginally so) by removing parts of his life or altering them to large extents. In the comics, Fritz is also an unapologetic rapist and commits incest with his own sister at least once. The rape scene is turned on its head in the movie and this fact itself visibly alters Fritz as a character. So in the end, the whole the movie attains, though greater than the three story arcs read in sequence, is maybe a different whole altogether? I guess the creators of the movie didn't trust the source material to fly unaltered even with the aspect of gestalt analysis being a given (at least with the viewers if not producers).

I agree. I think Fritz is just a vessel for the audience to follow through the social commentary.

@Guitar Matricide Very true, though I expand that beyond celebrities and some fictional characters to everyone nowadays (since everyone can now have a platform to speak on whether it'd be the Internet or some other way to spread any kind of information in a general way).

no you're correct, The Flintstones was originally meant for adults(hence all of the Honeymooners references)and it wasn't aimed at kids until like the 70s

I remember that too. I saw an article in TV Guide that Flintstones was an animated cartoon “for adults” and since I was 8 years old I was afraid it meant I wouldn’t be allowed to watch it. The Flintstones characters were shown smoking cigarettes and advertising Winston cigarettes who was their sponsor early on.
