I've been living in Japan for 2 years and from my experience here, they actually care so much about moral, etiquette, and norm because it may cause a ripple effect on the society in general. But when it comes to personal enjoyment/belief such as religion, sexual preference, political view, and sexual activity, they tend to respect it by not dwelling on it. As long as you don't make trouble for others, you have a freedom to do things as you will.
