What the so called "JBL BASS BOOST"/ " LOW FREQUENCY MODE" function actually does. Don't use!

Hello again this video demonstrates what the so called JBL "bass boost" mode does to your JBL speaker. I felt the need to make this video because I am a responsible speaker demonstrator and would never put anything on this channel that would cause damage to your devices.
Using this certain key combination which I have purposely not revealed for a certain amount of time deactivates JBLs limiter and DSP allowing the speaker to distort which over time WILL damage the drivers and/or amplifiers as well as causing the speaker to sound rubbish.
This video is NOT to bad mouth the people that have videos demonstrating this "mode" on youtube it is purely to explain the risks associated with activating this "mode" and the damage it can cause.
Any comments revealing how to activate this "mode" will be deleted.

I got my new Charge 3 from Amazon and it has perfectly clean bass but way too much of it (compared to studio headphones). If I press this combination it has near to no bass even at high volume. Also turning it off and on again makes the bass come again. So is there something very wrong with my speaker or why does the "Low frequency mode" remove bass?

aspiebloke's world Many folks think high volume kills speakers....not enough power or too much paired with clipping (distortion) is the real culprit. Great video man!!! I've been in too many cars with "bumpin systems" that really just sound like distorted garbage.

Is it okay to use in-app bass boosters/EQ's as long as this mode isn't turned on? I feel like my jbl pulse 3 has more potential than I've experienced. Especially when comparing to other little speakers. If it would be okay, then how exactly can I prevent ruining my pulse 3?
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 6 лет назад
the dsp should prevent any damage. However the device can sometimes distort even with the dsp on. Just keep an ear out for any distortion like in this video and it should be okay however I wouldn’t recommend it.

@aspieblokesworld1890

You cannot activate the mode on a JBL GO. The Go is a ported device meaning it does not use passive radiators also it’s quite difficult to get much bass out of it due to its small size. I can only assume without seeing the device that it may have a bad speaker driver. Does the sound seem distorted?

@raducloud

I believe that, for responsible users, the disabling of the DSP can still be good. First of all, even professional speakers can be broken when you push them beyond distortion - but one can notice when distortion shows up and just lower the volume or lower just the bass. Second, disabling the DSP produces a more accurate sound, which is a shame to miss. And it's very easy to go back too, one can go back and forth.
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 3 года назад
I agree however, as can be seen in many JBL “bass test” videos here on RU-vid users aren’t always responsible. speakers distort for a reason!

Yes it depends when you do it if you do it whilst music is playing it seems to reduce the bass but if you pause and do it it seems to work differently. Either way it disables all the speaker protection so Don't do it :)

I have the charge 3 and it was not active out of the box an easy way to see if you have it active is to turn it up if it sounds like it did in this video then the mode is active if it doesn’t then it’s not. Whilst it hasn’t happened to me I’ve heard that activating the mode reduces bass on some devices unfortunately I can’t figure that one out as it acts the same on all my devices. I wouldn’t recommend using it though.

My understanding is, Turning this mode disables their preset EQ and turning off the sound limiter The default EQ gives it some boosted bass, but takes away the lowest sub bass frequency’s, and gives a boost to the very high’s as well. Giving the default sound signature a safe bass boosted feel, but if you switch modes, yeah it sounds like less bass, but if you listen close- the super low frequency’s arnt cut out I like turning the EQ and limiter off for EDM music, but I keep the volume low This way I can use the EQ on my phone and not worry about JBLs built in EQ trying to cut out frequencies I enjoy Use with Caution, If you turn the safety off, then crank the bass on your phone, you’ll blow the drivers

Unfortunately due to youtube removing monetisation for me until I have 1,000 subscribers i've been unable to invest in products for this channel so haven't got the Xtreme 2 to try and recreate your problem. I assume by bass boost you meant the so called low frequency mode? If so did you have the volume loud? Worst case scenario is you've blown something, try resetting the device and see if that solves it. Let me know how you get on and I hope this helps :)

@PhotoBobBarker
@PhotoBobBarker 6 лет назад
It should be fine if used in a near-field type use, but yes at high volumes it can be be an issue. Also, as a side note... Square waves don't damage the voice coil, they can cause damage to the voice coil former-cone connection. The burned coil problem commonly attributed to being driven with a square wave is really an issue under certain conditions the power section of the amplifier is driven to such a point as to allow dump full rail voltage to the speaker coils. Though that can sometimes present itself as a square wave it can also be straight DC. For low voltage amplifier chips like they use in devices like these even sending the full voltage through the coil for a short duration isn't really a problem. Worst case this would result in about 3 watts being put through the speaker (given a 3.6v battery). SO damage to the speaker is unlikely... Now damage to your will to live from having to listen to that distorted music that's a different issue ; )

I’m sorry but no where in this video is there a charge 3 being dropped into water or in any other videos on this channel. There is a video where I toss a UE wonderboom into water. The speaker is designed as is the charge 3 to be fully immersed for a certain period of time. And it is working perfectly fine
@Mois41

You dont need to be sorry. It was just my personal opinion to stuff i saw connectet to this product. I'm just enjoying the good quality without low frequency mode and without taking it into the water.

@aspieblokesworld1890

A factory reset should sort it. With your device switched on hold the play and the volume up buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. The device should power off when the reset is complete.

But why would they put the feature (low frequency mode) on the jbl’s if we can’t use it ?
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 6 лет назад
This "mode" is from what i've researched a way for JBL engineers to test the speaker. but as can be seen in the video if the speaker is turned fully up having the mode activated allows the speaker to distort.
@djlobb
@djlobb 6 лет назад
It's used to debug the speaker and also to tune the DSP as well as measure to make sure it's operating in spec.

Does having bass boost switched on in a device equalizer also damage the speaker? Like at high volumes?
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 5 лет назад
My advice is to always turn off any equalisation but having these enabled should cause any harm as long as you don't allow your speaker to distort. Basically if it goes a little fuzzy as heard in this video just crank it down a little :)
@mariodesilva1074
@mariodesilva1074 5 лет назад
@@aspieblokesworld1890 Thanks a lot One last thing. Resetting does turn this off, correct? Because JBL support says that it doesn't. (I have a Charge 3)
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 5 лет назад
On the tests I've carried out resetting does deactivate it. Easy way to tell is to crank the speaker, if it distorts then the mode is on. If it doesn't then it isn't :)

I still don’t recommend using it. If the speaker is designed to be used this way then JBL would have mentioned in the manual etc.
@djlobb
@djlobb 6 лет назад
The firmware upgrade fix for the distortion only affects the speaker when the DSP and processing is activated. No EQ/Limiter/DSP refinements will make any difference when all the DSP is switched off and the speakers are fed a raw signal.

@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 5 лет назад
DSP stands for Digital Signal Processor this is what the devices use to ensure they sound good and stay within limits. The so called low frequency mode disables this and allows the speakers to go outside of safe limits causing distortion and possible damage.

I don't know if I was exactly on "normal" mode but my flip 5 sounded flat with less bass. I did a reset and bass level increased like this "bass mode" I'm literally confused whether my flip 5 is default on this setting And btw the lower setting bass (which could be "normal" 🤷) sounds really dull and boring for a premium price portable speaker

@aspieblokesworld1890

Technically it isn't a low frequency mode. This is what it's become known as. It's actually a JBL test mode that removes all DSP and limiters.

If you have activated this "mode" simply restart the speaker and it should go back to normal. whist I don't advise the use of this mode I can't see using it at a low volume causing any damage.

@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 6 лет назад
Nope not as far as I’m aware and my XB40 has been throughly tested. Sony speakers are meant to run with the xtra bass mode. JBL speakers are not meant to be used with the test mode also known as low frequency mode.

The xb30 is great as long as you keep an ear out for distortion you should be fine. The dsp is very good at preventing that on the Sony speakers I’ve found. Enjoy! :)

Its to boost the low frequency's at low volumes, not to be used at full volume that's just stupid , it's like a loudness switch on vintage amplifier , personally I like the boost feature I hate all these limiters and auto dsp .

@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 6 лет назад
Full volume with this mode active probably yes. Without this mode full volume shouldn’t damage the speaker however I recommend not going above 75% as this is when the limiters start coming in and sound quality can begin to suffer.
@djlobb
@djlobb 6 лет назад
Using the speaker at full-volume in normal operating modes is perfectly safe. However; as Aspiebloke's World said, the DSP will adjust bass and limit/compress the signal when it gets turned up near max, however this is intended and therefore you are perfectly fine using the speaker at maximum if the need arises.
