Urban rescue ranch made a whole thing about his rhea constantly attacking him and making him bleed. His channel blew up because people were watching him get mauled by his pet. I think it's important that you show what it's really like living with them.

I have a pet duck who I ended up with against my will. Ducks, like geese, will try to bite you. Ducks also have tendencies to harass dogs. They do not make good pets, I always tell people not to get ducks. Ducks are smart but you cannot UNtrain a duck. Once they learn a behavior, it’s likely going to become a permanent part of their routine.

Leaving more of the bites (or attempted bites) in from now on seems like a good idea! It shows the everyday reality of owning and interacting with toucans, namely that even though they’re lovely, they’re still lovely assholes. You do a great job already with advocating that people not get pet toucans, but actually seeing how even with human friendly toucans bites are a constant hazard, it speaks louder then words as a warning.

Very interesting. My African Grey parrot would bite me hard intentionally and look me into the eyes afterward making sure I got the message. He would bite for a reason when I did something wrong, that he did not like- for example being taken back into his cage when did not want to, etc. I got him to stop by pretending to cry as if badly hurt, and looking at him while pretending to cry and showing him the part of my body that he bit, usually a finger. I would do this for a whole minute or so! It worked because while he was biting me purposefully he did not want to hurt me seriously. With a Toucan, if as you say they are bullies by nature, this approach would not work. I wonder though. Nice video, thanks.

A great demonstration with toucans and how the only reason you should ever take any in is if: you're capable of giving the real care and space for them to thrive, able to give part of your life to, and most importantly - are insane enough. ;) These aren't tiny dogs you can pamper and put in a purse. I know there are a lot of differences between toucans and parrots, but parrots will guard resources too and attack you when you try to feed them. What worked for me was getting a different cage for my parrot to sleep in and then I can clean his big cage and get his food and water all set up before I get him up for the day. Otherwise I was getting bit every time I put my hand in the cage, even to bring him food! And you deserve a lot of respect for rescuing these birds and giving them the best life possible!!

@tobiaswichert4843
@tobiaswichert4843 Год назад
Naturally agressive yes, in a way. The social structure, behavior in their flocks is kinda similar to the Klingon society. Toucans do spend much time with non-serious fights, like sparring, with each other.
@2CANTV
@2CANTV Год назад
They're just general bullies even to their own species. Like the poster said before me, they spend a lot of time fencing with their flock mates as a social behavior. But they also tend to dominate and bully any other animal in the vicinity- especially other birds. We perhaps don't notice because we're so familiar with seeing them now... But can you imagine being another bird or animal and a bird with that kind of beak comes at you? Even though it's not as comparatively strong as a parrots may be, they rely on intimidation and confidence when approaching other animals. My best guess is that they consider me as part of the flock and they interpret biting me as a playful challenge...the problem is I don't have a tough beak to meet them at their level. They typically go after my hands because I suspect that's what they equate to my "beak", being what I use to manipulate objects like they do with theirs.
@tobiaswichert4843

Oh yes definitely leave biting in. People need to start getting wake up calls that animals are living beings and not animated toys that just want to cuddle. All those "cute animal videos" accounts are doing a huge disservice. I know that a lot of people just want to see something cute for 3 sec and forget about it, but at least half will get their mind made with them wanting to get a pet thinking they're only gonna get the good and cute stuff.

I pretty regularly feed eels (specifically NZ long fin eels) and I'd feel more comfortable sticking my hands in front of a carnivorous eel (they do have teeth, many people claim they don't, they do. They are very short, very sharp teeth) than a toucan. The bites are almost all accidental. The worst I had was one biting my thumb after mistaking it for a piece of sausage, but it let go after a second or so.
