This was very informative. I retired in 2018 after 53 yrs working as a RN. I am 78 yrs old and have taken Metformin since 2014. No other meds except for B12 3xwk. Definitely not 10 meds. Sadly, I have seen many elderly patients with too many medicines causing multiple problems. Polypharmacy is a major problem in the elderly in this country. This video is an important tool in making caregivers and patients aware of interactions.
Been on metformin for 5 months (UK NHS) ( 2 x 500mg twice daily) but thinking of changing as i have insulin deficiency & still loing weight - is there a drug for type 2 which balances sugar & also levels up your weight ? 🙏
I was just diagnosed with diabetes at age 69. Before metformin. I was too weak to function and was looking into assisted living. Since metformin. I feel undeniably stronger. Can.t do without..
I took metformin for three months and at 1000 milligrams daily my blood sugar levels would not go down and I was having nausea right through so my doctor changed it to glicazide and I am feeling much better and doing fairly well.
I year after I wrote how much Metformins helped me: Those Metformins made me feel better at first. Then I got real sick. Nausea etc., That.s after my doctors had told me "it.s a common misconception that Metformin makes some folks sick". Shortly after he told me this, his office called; screaming for me to get off right away, as it was ruining my kidneys. They then switched me to Januvia, which makes me feel just as strong as the Metformin. An RN in my building is on dialysis 3 times per week because of taking Metformin.
It's heart-wrenching to hear how diabetes has impacted your life, bringing you to such a low point. I'm deeply moved that metformin has given you strength. Thank you for sharing your journey; it's a stark reminder of the struggles many face. Wishing you continued strength and better days ahead.
Very useful information, I am on Metformin since decades, my DM T 2 is under control, this video is yet another reminder to watch out for other contradicting meds. Thanks a Ton.
Excellent information 👌 thank you so much. I am diabetic for more than 15 years taking metformen for years now recently started to develop UTI quite often so each time I get UTI the doctor gives me trimethoprim course without mentioning weather it interacts with metformen. I am extremely thankful to you.
Over long term use and higher Metformin doses 2G daily (4x 500mg tablets daily), it actually does - You may not notice intially as it increases the volume of Metform to remain in the blood, by causing it to adhere to certain cell instead of your body clearing it out naturally. Other medications such as Heart mediciations and some antdepressants its more risky
The video narrator stated that it MAY, not that it always does. Your experience is anecdotal, and yet you state it as fact, even though others may not share your experience.
@@LibertyskinHCP here. I would hope the OP has discussed her grapefruit with her MD, as we all should. Metformin can be a life saving med. Like all meds, there may be adverse effects. NIDDM is a complex illness. Each person should have a personalised care plan, get education from trusted internet channels, like this one, but ultimately your MD should answer your questions.
Agree with B12 supplementation. Almost anyone with prolonged health issues may benefit minority from B12 but it is merely a band-aid fix when things are that bad.
This is great info. I will send this to a friend - knowledge is power. I dnt believe any doctor go through all you have with their patients. KEEP THE INFO ROLLING. HIGHLY APPRECIATE.
I am not the brightest spark in the fire but I managed to absorb and understand this video. Excellent vocal from the commentator made the video clear and understandable. Thank you! (I've now subscribed).
….and has anyone told you that metformin gives you the runs…in my case serve and debilitating and badly effecting my life. For over 18 months I suffered and not one doctor pointed it out that it could be the Metformin. This included consultants.😳 I persuaded my diabetic nurse to stop the metformin and the problem stopped over night …100% improved!
I was on 2000 mg of metformin daily and had severe diarrhea. Dropped down to 1000. Very limited effect on blood sugar. Also added two pepto every morning. Still gassy but the d is much improved.
Yes a few years back I had to stop it immediately because I was working at the time and I could barely function because of that side of effect. My doctor wasn't pleased but I was already taking one diabetes medicine anyway. That very same doctor never told me I had stage 3 kidney disease. I found out by reading her doctors note in my electronic medical records. I'm glad I stopped it because it may have slowed down the progression of the disease. I'm at stage 4 now due to making dietary changes. Sometimes you have to listen to you body and become your own advocate. I also switched doctors shortly after that.
I take a teaspoon of turmeric every morning, but my blood sugar was a wee bit high, so I took a metformin tablet, I felt dread full, my blood pressure had dropped to almost unreadable, and it dawned on me it was the reaction to between the metformin and turmeric, almost fatal, be careful they don mix
I take Metformin - I also drink 1 C of red grapefruit juice once in a while, I have blood draw to check my liver and kidneys no problem. Thank you for the informations.👍
I have been taking metformin since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 34 years ago and it was called, Glucophage, It works, my A1C stays around 5.8 and I have noticed no side effects. I have frequent checkups and have had no problem with liver or kidney damage. I do take a B-12 supplement because I read that Metformin could reduce my B-12 level. No side effects from Metformin for me and I believe is it at least partly responsible for my being 78, a type 2 diabetic and very healthy.......
I was on it since December 2021 until June 2022 🤔 due to 41kg weight loss and my kidney damage without metformin y blood sugars are fine it dropped to 3.4 in hospital. 2022 could be year 🤲🏻🤲🏻🤲🏻🤲🏻🤲🏻 I know I don’t have diabetes anymore 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 I reversed it 6 months later with un intentional weight loss 41kg
I see patients, mostly in age group 70 to 100 yrs, they on average take 10 medicines, possibilities of drug to drug interactions are exponential, wading through this is very challenging,to say the least.Thank you for your information.
TEN medicines as an average? Wow, I am staring closely at 80 and take no RX's, only vitamins. I think so many seniors are over medicated to say the least.
I live in a small community. I doctor locally. My regular doctor is a PA. He prescribed me Metformin for my diabetes. He also prescribed B-12 with it. I am with the VA so have to have the supplements prescribed for them to pay for it. Am so glad to hear this because it makes me even more confident in my Drs. ability.
I have taken this in the past years. I also have diabetes 2 now, hypoglycemia, and heart disease . None of this side effects were ever discussed by my Doctor at the time. Just prescribed. FYI
Thank you for the comment. Glad to know that the branded Glyciphage is the same as the generic Metformin. No wonder that the former is more expensive. I seem to experience the placebo effect because of the reputation of the (excellent) doctor who prescribed Glyciphage for me.
Being type 2 this has been eye opening much ❤️ for the info. You may have saved my life as I take a couple of prescription medications that are listed and I WILL be discussing what I have learned! Going to watch it over again.
I used to take metformin and due to things that happened when I was being cured from cancer it became a bad idea. I take ozempic now. one shot once a week (needle is about one cm long.) it is expensive but ask your doctor about it.
Being on a keto diet and intermittent fasting will reverse type 2 diabetes and less dependence on medications. Talk to your doctor before changing your diet. The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung information to prevent and reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally. He also has a lot of videos on RU-vid on the subjects.
Dean Chartier - the country you are? There are no any pharmacié? That you can take un appointment? To explain what is side effects of what medicaments your taken? And cannot take with the metformin? And how to take medicament's?...what the distances of hours? Becouse; here in switzerland, i can take un appointment to the pharmacié for more than 1 hour/ in half of explaining all thoses side effects, ect, ect. All the medicament's i am taking. And that is coverd of my health in insurances. Since, i have health insurances the basic of almost ; 700.- chf a month and complimentary amout, That is rembourses. I will pay only participations of 10% of the bill. Since, i have few health problems. i'll go there to my the same pharmacie for 25yrs already. To explain to me, every time my medicament, my doctor's changing.
@@Mariahlb Many western countries like Australia, The US & England don’t bother about actually discussing side effects. When a new medication is given, the pharmacy may ask you if you want a printed information guide, but that’s about it. I have NEVER had a doctor voluntarily give details of side-effects, the last one told me that “everything in life is a risk”, after I said that the potential risks seemed unreasonable. That didn’t help, and it certainly wasn’t in context of the actual discussion. I felt dismissed, so I’m getting another opinion. I’m sure they would talk to you about it, but it’s up to you to ask for an in-depth conversation. I’m only mentioning these countries as I’ve lived in all of them for long enough to get dr’s scripts. It’s the doctor’s job to weigh up the risk/benefit ratio, but there’s so much polypharmacy going on, different specialists adding different potentially interacting drugs, it’s no wonder it’s a huge cause of death, although it doesn’t seem to be acknowledged or recorded that way, exactly. You need to double & triple check everything your doctors are doing. I have had a couple of hair raising experiences..and know of others also..by God’s grace I was saved from medical “mistakes”. Everyone is human, doctors aren’t infallible, so we have to take responsibility for our own health. You are very fortunate with the medical system in Switzerland.
@@Mariahlb i take methformin almost 8 months and my blood glucose normal also it helps me to reduce my carbs intake.. And my constipation, in my country i dont need a Precreption to buy methformin and its very cheap only around 2 dollars for 10 tablets
excess consumption of niacin containing foods/drinks especially at every meal can have drastic effects with metformin because your liver will ALWAYS process niacin first - until the niacin is processed it will not do anything else
@Ramachandran PS please follow doctors advice. I have never heard of Metformin being taken on alternative days. Please follow your doctor's recommended dosage. 🙏
Is there a website that lists every medication and what not to take together? I personally do not believe a doctor would know the interaction problems between medications and fruits.
Thank you Al be checking rest of my meds! Av currently got covid n a bit worried about my recovery because of my type 2 diabetes I'd find it most helpful a bit of advice on this. Am very tired constantly.
VERY informative! Thank you. My concern is that I am taking Metformin, and also two medications that you have not mentioned (but could be included): Hydrochlorothiazide and Benazepril. I will bring these and the Metformin and potential issues up with both my PCP and with my pharmacist for further information. I will be guided by their assessments and conclusions since they know a LOT more than I do. Thank you for this video, which has placed the issue in my mind. :)
That’s a fantastic approach. ALWAYS bring all your medications AND supplements to your PCP and the any specialist you see. Also don’t shy away from going over a typical day of meals and activities you do.
I was on that very same combo. Watch out for the HCTZ. It caused me an electrolyte imbalance from excessive urination that led to heart palpitations. I stopped taking it altogether and started taking coQ10 and magnesium instead. I do still take the Benazepril. My BP is better now than with HCTZ. Heart palpitations have stopped for the most part. Just sharing my experience. Always seek professional medical advice before taking any meds or supplements.
@@slocumb1270 ABSOLUTELY! I always confer with my healthcare folks! So far the combination is working VERY well for me. ALL of my caregivers and advisers know, right down to the exact dosage and frequency, what I'm doing and I never make a move without checking in with them.
According to my doctors, metformin caused my kidneys to fail. That and the blood pressure pills. My newer doctors changed the medications, but to late.
I am having that same side effect. I always enjoyed my dreams a they were lucid and entertaining, but now I am wondering about my mental health, to a certain extent.
I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2013 and began taking Metformin. I had had a colectomy (total removal of colon) 3 years earlier. One of the functions of the colon is to reprocess electrolytes and enzymes. It also predisposes one to dehydration. I was perpetually thirsty so I drank a lot of water. This depleted my chemistry even more. I ended up in ICU with severe dehydration 3 years ago even while drinking water constantly. Of course they always ask what meds you take and I told them metformin. They told me then that this medicine will exacerbate dehydration. My BP was 40/60 and my creatinin was over 9 (normal = 1.2) I have since gone keto and stopped ALL medicines. My blood chemistry is finally all normal and I feel great. Metformin is my enemy.
I am pre-diabetic. My endocrinologist just gave me this medication. I take lisinopril - hydroclothorize, propranolol and Xanax. Will it affect any? I am very skeptical when it comes to new medication!!!
My wife takes it for type 2 but read a artical today stating that metaformin that it found to cause or increase risk of cancer I told her to talk to doc about switching.
Sertraline definitely in my case, had a negative side effect. My Doctor prescribed both of these. I must inquire about the side effects with my new Doctor.
It doesnt interact at all.. Im on 100mg Sertraline, 10mg Jardiance and 2g Metformin daily and my Diabetes specialist has never had any concerns. What you have to watch is some natural suppliments (Herbal) like Berberine & Inositol. Whilst these are proven to have the same impact as Metformin on Blood Glucose and do assist in regulation of levels... NEVER take them at the same time of the day as Metformin, as you could actually hypo as it can drop your BG to unsafe levels quickly as both compounds work towards the same goal at the same time @@lisbethsalander1723
I take grass fed beef liver pills. It has zinc, B 9 and B 12. Will send you picture of bottle . I take Bee plus from Nature cure too. It has stopped sugar cravings.
I was put on metformin awhile back and it made me so sick I had to go to the hospital. My doctor then switched me to glipizide and Ozempic and I have no side effects
Glipizide can work really great and without any issues except for one possible big problem, weight gain! At least it did for me. And very rapid weight gain it was quite shocking how soon my pants didn't fit.
Many thanks for your details information. It really help me and I shall discuss it with my doctor regarding when to stop l been taking it for about 6years
Our health care providers don't have the time to explain all details of side effects. They should prescribe and talk to us about it's side effects. Unless we contract a psychotherapist so we get well informed.
Thanks for this video very interesting and good information regarding metformin in taking 3 tabs a day my sugar is 6 or 7 as my doctor is happy with my result I avoid fuzzy drinks and juices lots of water
It is a little vague so, can you be more specific. Without knowing what chemical exactly is in Grapefruit that is allegedly not present in any other fruit and affects Metformin, we can't be sure we are not eating it with some other food. Maybe it is also in oranges, lime, lemons, blood oranges?
I had reactions to Metformin and am now on the liquid injection which I have no problem with. A day time Homolog and a over night one called Basaglar. Metformin made me food sensitive, and I couldn't keep any food down and had major issues in the bowel department. I couldn't keep going on it, in that regard. So have been switched over by my caretakers..and am far better. I use a quik-pen system right now.
Metformin is derived from the French Lilac plant AKA Goats Rue - it was used to treat diabetes since the middle ages. Metformin is 1 molecule different so it could be patented and to lower the risk of lactic acid build up. Its used commonly in anti-aging even when the person is not a diabetic.
I don't know about others, but these metformin medicines causes me to get bad weird and vivid dreams.. they are always negative in some way, close to nightmares, but they do not feel like nightmares. just negative dreams in one way or another.
Don't eat anything that taste good..............just kidding, reduce your carb intake.......I have not tried it but many people say the KETO diet is good....
And metformin will NOT cause low bloodsugar. Even if you have a couple of beers. I have been medicated with Ramipril for nearly 10 years together with Metformin. Have never had any issues.
Good point, I have noticed that also. Other drugs for diabetes which work differently from metformin can make quick and large changes in blood sugar, metformin for me at least, does not do that...
Interesting. I was recently diagnosed with fatty liver disease, and diabetes, you mentioned that liver disease increases the risk for lactic acidosis. I wonder why my doctor started me on metformin if this is such a high risk.
Metformin gives me nausea with vomiting when on the max dose so it's basically impossible, i can only tolerate 1000mg per day unfortunately, and no my body never adjusted to being able to take any higher as i have tried multiple times. Still even on the lower dose, i get a small bit of general stomach pain, but its tolerable. I've also been on an SSRI the whole time, paroxetine, so maybe that is why the side effects are so bad.
My husband started taking Berberine instead of Metformin because Metformin was making him feel sick. My husband has now got his blood sugar under control in a month using Berberine, IF, Keto and light Excercise. Berberine works, but cut out carbs, exercise and incorporate intermittent fasting.
Hi thanks for yur information I’ve been taking metformin over 7 years now an I have all the side effect an I eat grape fruit every day So what meds can I take instead of the metformin that don’t have all of these side effects I have dereiaha upset stomach some times I can’t leave the house keep runny to bath room an is after I take the metformin can u help me please thanks
