In this mini-series, I'm going to cover the basics of installing and updating Windows 10. These videos are designed to be reference videos to point people to for routine DIY tasks. Feel free to ask questions in the comments, but keep in mind that there's always a million outlier that can pop up, and I can't cover every possible case!

Thank you, Using your guides i was able to condense my partitioned drive into just a main C drive, then do a file cleanup and recover 35 gigs of disc space, which given i had just put a 120gb ssd in the laptop, was a huge chunk the elite book lives for a while longer

3:20 hibernation is meant to be used to preserve an active Windows session on a laptop, when that runs out of power. Because a PC cannot run out of power (not including a sudden power loss), there's little use for it.

Have to disagree with you on hibernation, especially with mechanical hard drives in laptops, hibernation in most machines will park the drive instead of constantly giving it a slight bit of power.

I just watched 4 of your upgrading from 7 to 10 vids. Very informative, thank you :) My questions are; do these same techniques work when upgrading from 8.1 to 10? Are there any special steps to be aware of for that upgrade? I want to keep all my apps and related data intact.

Some notes: - never put a upper limit to a page file - you migt encouter problems with memory hungry apps like Google Chrome with "too many tabs open" or Video editing apps. More about page file & memory management from Mark Russinovich - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TrFEgHr72Yg.html -The video is long, but worth watching. Has a part II Do not disable system restore, if you have to remove a bad windows update, you might need it. Other than that, some more tips: - Check the SMART status of your drive and BACK IT UP - disable antivirus before installation as it slows stuff down - Run "DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /SpSuperseded" on the windows 7 system to clean up update "residue" - Run CCleaner to get rid of temporary files - Run "chkdsk C: /F" to fix any file system related errors - Run "sfc /scannow" to check for corrupted system files and fix them - Run "DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth" to check system health - Clone the hard drive to a SSD After the upgrade - fix Font access right related problems by running: takeown /f C:\WINDOWS\Fonts /r /d y icacls C:\WINDOWS\Fonts /grant administrators:F /t - enable shadow copy on the SSD if disabled - verify search index functionality and disable "Treat similar words with diacritics as different words" (for non english people) - Run www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 to disable all the nasty Windows 10 telemetry - check for updated drivers at www.driverscloud.com/en/ - install a backup software like AOMEI Backupper to create full disk image backups Bonus: community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/4378-windows-10-decrapifier-18xx-19xx There are some more things I do, but its 3:30AM and i have to go sleep :-) P.S.> All commands above have to be run as Administrator P.S.S> Allways check the release info for problems and pfixes docs.microsoft.com/sk-sk/windows/release-information/status-windows-10-1909

Interesting point of view on hibernation. My laptop will keep on flashing the power button if I set it to sleep, and I think it will just hang like that for a couple of hours before waking up and turning itself off again (I think I saw it do that) ,so I use hibernation all the time.

If MS decides do remove the legacy control panel option, It's in Settings > System > Storage. Highly recommend configuring storage sense as well, as that could clean some files off if your disk gets full. it also has a ton of things in it to look through.

Back in the days, for w95 and w98 I always had at least 2 hdd and I've always put the pagefile on a different hdd so when windows loaded system then the hdd head did not moved between the files and writing/reading the swapfile. But after w98 I always had enough RAM to disable the virtual memory completely, and I neved had any problem with Windows, even with games.

I use hibernate all the time :D Not so much of a deal with an SSD time-wise but sleep uses power on a laptop being dumped to RAM so prefer hibernate which gets back up and running again pretty quick and back to where I was. Am curious as to why you think hibernate is outdated now? I can't remember the last time I had to use defrag - I used to use Pagedefrag back on XP which was a bit more advanced - never needed to on 7> since all the machines I've had had SSDs...

Hi Adam. I'm glad you made this video. As I was watching, I noticed that my laptop has the same P6200 cpu with integrated graphics. I intend using it only when I travel. After I bought it with less than 30 pounds, I deep cleaned it, changed thermal paste and installed an 120 gb SSD. It runs like butter, but the problem is that it's overheating, really really bad and I dont know why. What are you suggesting me to do?

Actually System Restore has saved my butt a month ago or so. I updated Windows 10 normally and when it went to reboot it got stuck in a cycle... after 3 automatic reboots I was welcomed by the troubleshooting screen or whatever is called. I restored the last restore point (that was created automatically by Windows update) and then the computer worked fine. I disabled Windows updates for a month and after that I could update everything just fine. Lately Microsoft is having problems with certain updates and certain configurations so I definitely recommend using it, even if it's only for Windows Updates...

A commenter below states that they use Hibernation and for a mechanical (spinning rust) drive this is a good option IMO. However, *turn it OFF* if you are using an SSD because it ends up writing a LOT of data to the SSD and "wears away" the warranty, certainly on a Samsung. I put an SSD into my wife's laptop but forgot to turn Hibernate off and withing 5 months it had eaten 2.3TB of writes on the drive. Once it was turned off it added a further 0.2TB of writes in the next 12 months. FYI, in the "old days" Microsoft's formula for setting the Pagefile size was 1.5 x RAM Size for the minimum and 2.5 x RAM size for the maximum. Once we started getting 8GB RAM and above they started wasting a lot of HDD capacity but fortunately they seem to have change that quite a while ago.
@Adamant_IT

Oh gosh... I had considered Hibernate burning through write-cycles, but didn't realise it would use that much... I assumed it would be low enough not to really worry about unless you had a trash SSD.
@javiTests
@javiTests 3 года назад
I don't use hibernation anymore for 2 reasons: - Every time you use it, it writes the RAM memory to the disk so if you have an SSD it shortens the life span - If you have an SSD Windows 10 boots up very quickly so it's not needed... But if you have an HDD, booting from hibernation is much more quick than normal boot and it isn't a problem with the disk writes, so I recommend using it for people with HDD and not to do it for people with SSDs

When I do defrag, I boot to a Windows PE environment. Once there I delete the page file and hibernate file. (My PE environment has control over system files) I then defrag while still in PE. Because Windows isn't running, there are fewer files that can't be moved. Once I reboot, Windows will recreate the pagefile and hibernate file. Also not sure if the PowerShell command you used also disables Hybrid Power, because the default shutdown in Windows 10 is hibernate. That's so they can claim Windows 10 is faster because technically it never shut down. But when problems arise it's always an issue with that Hibernate system. Forcing the system to reboot fixes it but on some systems can take upwards of ten minutes.
@JessicaFEREM

I use Hibernation to keep my battery life to a maximum, because i won't be needing my PC after half an hour, it's always better to hibernate since it can't waste away the battery since it's off. I know it's not super useful anymore, but personally, there's a few times where it's better than not. my current laptop requires it since if you push in on the screen, the keyboard will depress and wake the system. not just intentionally pushing, but in a bag especially, it'll kill the battery really fast. and i recommend for a gaming PC, since you don't want it on wasting away power doing literally nothing, so i like to do that. everyone has their own tastes, but that's what i like to do.

oh yeas, Great video adam, Im takin notes to use it for future studies. Another thing, as you already know my pc I would like to ask another thing about smoothy frames: My GPU is a geforce GTX 950(That I properly cleaned) and my screen is a SAMSUNG(60hz) I would like to know about the framerate, Its clearly not running at 60hz (my mouse, some animation transitions, even league of legends was having fps problems(was running at 144fps(Ive locked the limit manually) and suddenly had tears, sometimes I got lower than 60hz . I dont know if its because my gpu have about 2 years or its the screen or something that need an updated driver or if its all inside my head and it will not run at 60hz. Update: It is indeed the GPU, I just dont know about them (what makes a good gpu) for future choices haha
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
It's hard to tell without looking at the computer in person I'm afraid... However, I would opt for a 60fps frame-lock on a 60Hz monitor. Unless you're playing at a professional competitive level, you won't see any difference, and it should stabilise the frame rate and reduce tearing. It's true that running a game past 60fps on a 60Hz panel can result in seeing more up-to-date frames, but we're talking on a millisecond scale that 99.9% of people will not be able to perceive.

4:30 Page file can also be disabled - if you have enough memory (16Gig for a Windows 10) you shouldn't use a feature that was meant to be used when computers had 640MB of memory, and needed some way to get some extra "fake" memory.
@vgamesx1
@vgamesx1 2 года назад
Bad idea, it's uncommon, but some apps require it to run at all, more importantly though, this isn't some useless "ancient feature" or whatever otherwise MS would have removed it outright by now, it prevents your computer from crashing in the event you run out of memory, even with a fair amount of ram you can still run out for various reasons such as an app crashing or leaking memory (I've experienced this one first-hand, in old versions of chrome a memory leak was bringing my 8GB system to its knees as it kept consuming more and more ram) and the page file will move stuff that hasn't been used in a while out of ram into it, because that's still faster than fully loading something again... Every os does this, for example linux/android has a swap file that does mostly the same thing, the developers know what they're doing, many of these sort of hacks to make your pc faster do nothing or actually make performance worse.

I nade certain to download a program called "00 Shut Up" which has a free version online and is made by a German software maker. It attempts to negate the spyware aspect of windows 10 by setting every setting to the maximum possible level for privacy and performance. Most of all it turns off the telemetry. I registered it with Microsoft under a fake name since 10 requires that silly Microsoft account.

One of the best things that he SHOULD do but he did not. At least in this video. That laptop only has 4gb of memory installed in it. Moving it to 8gb or 16gb will also speed it up. It will not be going to the hard drive as often since it will not be running out of the main memory as often. The minimum memory requirement for Windows 10 64bit is 2gb. This laptop is barely over that. Memory upgrade/addition would help greatly.

swap files for Linux(page file equivalent) are mostly unnecessary, until you need it. if something has a memory leak. instead of crashing the PC, it'll slow it down, giving you time to go into another TTY and kill the process. most Linux nerds want to disable it, but i say keep it and just change the swappiness( at what mem usage do we start using swap) to something like 90%(at 90% physical ram usage, start using the swap) I know this isn't windows related, but could probably help someone :p

no, never defrag an SSD. the way they work means they never need it, they can reach any point any time unlike HD's that have to physical move to the correct points. SSD's do have some jobs but that's handled at a firmware level and you don't want to mess with that.

@marcellipovsky8222

@@Adamant_IT FYI - Defrag in windows 10 is aware that it works on a SSD and it performs other important tasks like TRIM. As noted by Microsoft: Storage Optimizer will defrag an SSD once a month if volume snapshots are enabled. This is by design and necessary due to slow volsnap copy on write performance on fragmented SSD volumes. It’s also somewhat of a misconception that fragmentation is not a problem on SSDs. If an SSD gets too fragmented you can hit maximum file fragmentation (when the metadata can’t represent any more file fragments) which will result in errors when you try to write/extend a file. Furthermore, more file fragments means more metadata to process while reading/writing a file, which can lead to slower performance. As far as Retrim is concerned, this command should run on the schedule specified in the dfrgui UI. Retrim is necessary because of the way TRIM is processed in the file systems. Due to the varying performance of hardware responding to TRIM, TRIM is processed asynchronously by the file system. When a file is deleted or space is otherwise freed, the file system queues the trim request to be processed. To limit the peek resource usage this queue may only grow to a maximum number of trim requests. If the queue is of max size, incoming TRIM requests may be dropped. This is okay because we will periodically come through and do a Retrim with Storage Optimizer. The Retrim is done at a granularity that should avoid hitting the maximum TRIM request queue size where TRIMs are dropped.
