What you´ve missed to talk about in my eyes is that there are people who´re already severely traumatized and have also been traumatized by the psychiatric/medical field who would become dangerously suicidal by the threat of any intervention or evaluation. I know I´m not the only person who falls in that category. One time I just wanted to open up for the first time and talk about my suicidal struggles without being at risk of hurting myself at all. My new therapist at that time didn´t listen, ended the call and immediately called the ambulance to my place and guess what, I´ve almost been dead when they arrived. Not because I wanted to kill myself but because I was so desperate for being retraumatized that it was the only thing I could do to prevent it. I still remember how I struggled to do it and how unbearable the pain was because I wanted to live. This is almost 15 years ago now and I´m still chronically suicidal on an everyday basis. And I´m still here. I now have a trustworthy therapist who doesn´t force anything on me (he would have had to several times by law but didn´t) no matter how suicidal I am and I wish there would have been someone trusting me and really listening to me before. Because someone being there, really caring and being warm and loving is the best antidote to suicidality you could possibly have.
@Sarablueunicorn
@Sarablueunicorn 2 года назад
I understand where you come from. What I learned from psychiatric/medical intervention is that if I'm struggling I shouldn't open up to no one, I should not seek help and silently plan my way to go. Majority of people who work in mental health field have no empathy and loads of disdain by the vulnerable ones. How getting authorites to drag you, tie you to a bed, drug you and cage you like a criminal with other unwell people will help with suicidal thoughts or behavior? Absolutely nothing.
@bugbean5500
@bugbean5500 2 года назад
@@Sarablueunicorn Yes, that´s my experience too. It´s nothing but harmful and abusive. I´m sorry you had to experience this too. What´s even more sad for me now is to compare this common intervention with how calm and non-invasive someone can be instead. When I´m in crisis now, my therapist is sitting on the floor all session long to not scare or threaten me in any kind of way, holding my hand, telling me some nice stories you would tell a frightened child. I´m curled up in a ball most of the times and unable to speak. But when I do he does understand and validate the pain I´m in and also relates to not wanting to endure this kind of life anymore. And know what? Him telling me that it is living hell, that it´s understandable to not want to live anymore with all the extreme traumas that happended to me in 30+ years does make me less suicidal. Because someone finally gets it, because I´m not alone anymore. I really hope the relational approach is going to become more common because everyone would profit. What everyone needs is human connection and care, not cold and distanced professionals robbing you from your self-efficacy.

I totally understand what you're saying. I also had a therapist take what I said the wrong way and ended up at the Psych ER courtesy of the police that were called. I was with them until the last part of the video. I have been on the receiving end of trying to voice my struggles with suicidal thoughts, and then having the therapist immediately call the ambulance to keep me in the hospital for 3 days. I won’t ever make that mistake again. Now I just never talk about it. I just wanted to talk and I was met with forced imprisonment and also to have nurses tell me that my scars weren’t that bad. If you threaten to call 911, then don’t be surprised when people don’t open up to you until it is too late. I also think it’s ridiculous to leave it up to any random person to make the judgement call as to whether or not to call 911.

@A You were failed, and I completely understand your desire to protect yourself from being harmed again. Suicide is typically a protector part that arises when our pain is higher than our coping skills. You were shut down, which is usually when self preservation kicks in. If you ever decide to try therapy again I would recommend seeing a therapist who is trained in Parts Work (Internal Family Systems, Ego State Therapy, Instinctual Trauma Response, etc). You deserve to heal and that part of you that did not want to live or does not want to live, still deserves a space to speak without repercussion.

From experience, I will say do not ever call the police unless it is an absolute last resort. Here in the USA we have a horrible system in place for people in suicidal situations where their loved ones call for help. Those police officers who are “trained” to help will not take you to help in a dignified manor. You are handcuffed and taken away in either a police car or an armoured type vehicle. I’m sure this “treatment” has led many to take their lives rather than be subjected to this humiliation again, especially if your neighbors see the police taking you away in handcuffs. Or even just police at your house. We need a better system to help those who are in mental turmoils. I will NEVER reach out for that type of help again nor will I ever be put in an institution where they just want to pump you full of drugs only to find that those drugs are super expensive at the pharmacy. Our system sucks here

Unfortunately Police are not psychologists. They do good training in dealing with many cases they're but still a long way from being a specialist. The additional factor in the U.S. is the multitude of firearms available to the general public. It's understandable if 1 is pulled on an officer, the circumstances can prove fatal. To an outsider, the 2nd Amendment is crazy. The only course of action is calling an ambulance who are better trained to deal with mental illness. No guns and the only van you'll be carried away in is an ambulance not a hearse. Unfortunately the American system is not 'built' to be a social system, 1 that is deemed to be socialism, but makes all of the sense in the world in funding to that cause in reducing the prevalence of mental illness. A capitalist system doesn't necessarily have a full socialist base. A balance between the 2 is ideal. One that provides opportunity and 1 that provides support. It's very successful in countries like the UK and Australia. Not perfect but what system is... Hopefully 1 day the US will see the sense in having subsidies for health care whether that's free hospital care, free specialist help, subsidised medication and just generally a more common sense system. I don't see that happening anytime soon and for that I empathise with your situation.

You cant tell anyone you are thinking of suicide or they will lock you up and give you pills that don't help. Hospitals can make things worse, not better. If you really feel suicidal, don't tell anyone. I've tried since I was 16 to get help. Im new 60, and it had to be your decision to keep being in pain, or make the pain stop.

It is very sad to read of your situation. I assume that you are in the U.S. If that's the case, it's not a good portrayal of the health system there. It seems the lack of proper mental health funding is a real concern if situations like yours aren't considered serious enough to treat or are mistreated. Always search for help. Never give up. I hope there are help lines to discuss your issues with an empathetic person and hopefully affordable counselling one on one can be found. There is light at the end of tunnel and it is daylight. Just one thing .. I would like to say that I have been looking for help and it's very hard. I'm not far from going over . I'm here watching this and barely have enough single on my phone to do so . I'm on a mountain with nobody around . I have no family or friends to help . I have nowhere to go and no one to call. It's to the point were I will have no one even to carry me to the hole in the ground . I can bet that I won't even be found for so long that I feel bad for the person that does find me . So I think that people should know that there are people that truely don't have anyone to help .I'm already done but I think that it should be easy for someone to get help .. not make them wait for over a hour to talk or. Fill out paperwork and then it's just to see if you qualify for help . It's not helping . I'm proof of it . Our life is already hard enough . Why make it harder .

While this is good advice in part, there are many scenarios to consider in personalities and situations. Focusing on the positives does help. With depression, it is all negative. There is no light at the end of the tunnel (it's just a train not daylight). Most people are good at something, highlight it. Self esteem is very important and half of the battle with depression is that. Building confidence in one's ability in crucial. Unfortunately probably the biggest detraction is the American health care system with the lack of funding for mental health and social awareness in general. Labelled Socialism and yet it has so many social benefits leading to employment and paying tax. Free counselling by professionals. Doctors psychologists and psychiatrists not amateurs in parents who in many ways are inept in dealing with these matters. It requires empathy and understanding requiring valuable time that so many just don't have.

As an Aspie child I had developed a suicide plan by the 4th grade. It was a child's plan, from a child's misunderstanding of how human families work. I figured if I could just wait until I graduated high school it would be like a fish going out into the world, that no one would notice that I had disappeared from the world. I fantasized that I could go out into the deep forest, dig a hole to secret away the act and off myself there, erasing God's mistake from the universe. Of course this actually would have been a horrible fate for my parents, who would have spent who knows how much time, money and worry wondering what had happened to their child. Fast forward 60+ years and although I don't feel suicidal, I do at times wish I'd just slipped a noose around my neck and ended it there and then in the basement. Because in weighing my life in the scale I've realized that the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze. I also understand why Aspies have such a high suicide rate. Sorry, I just needed to purge that. My question is: Therapy can help with things like avoidant personality disorder for most people. What about if your underlying condition is autism?

So, my husband has expressed some suicidal ideation lately but my counselor and our medical doctor said not to probe his brain and ask him questions about his mental state. My counselor said it may put thoughts in his head that he wasn't thinking about. Is that true? Because Dr Judy appears to be saying the opposite. I dont know if it matters but originally I asked my husband if he was suicidal. He didn't bring up the subject himself. I realize that you cannot dispense personal counsel to us but that seems like a broad general conflicting subject that could benefit a broad number of people. I would love to hear your or anyones take on this! Thanks

This entire discussion is geared towards parents of suicidal. Kids! Guess should have changed the title to that! That doesnt help us parents who are the suicidal ones bc of losing a child unexpectedly after 34 yrs of being their parent nor the pain and anguish it exacerbates the myriad of health issues we're already dealing with along with new ones that continue to come! Depression and anxiety sure dont help either of these problems! Having a spouse who could care less and another daughter not living w you who constantly berrates you and yells at you and doesnt know how to treat you with kindess, understanding and respect sure dont help the big picture either!!! There's no other family left to turn to...all the ones who cared and showed love are in heaven! Wouldnt anyone rather be there than this hell on earth?! I know I would! Wish is was a simple thing to do but unfortunately its not...😭💔

When I asked a Friend for help because he was "bullying" me by being mad at me for not giving me certain information on why my ex left me, I told him that i am having serious thoughts on taking my own life and i was asking him to not be hard on me because I was having a rough time. He attacked me and told me that i am a selfish Prick for thinking about suice. Because I only think about myself and not for my friends who lose me. I sunk deeper into Depression... One year Later i was doing okay again and now i am asking myself what I did wrong? I asked another friend of mine who dislikes the first guy. I asked her if he is right... Is it selfish to commit suicide? And she said "Yes". And even after i am well recovered, this question is still bugging me. Was I selfish when i wanted to commit suicide? I felt like a wandering corpse, and still do today in some sort. So.. Is it selfish to commit suicide?

I don’t believe it’s selfish I mean people who kill themselves aren’t doing it to inflict paint to others it’s more so because they feel helpless and don’t see a way to get help and to end the pain it’s understandable that for others who grieve the loss of a friend or a sibling etc they dont necessarily understand that but and are left confused and wondering how they could do helped the suicidal person and how they missed the signs

Maybe it's a European perspective, but I find it not very kind and empathetic how she talks about this topic. It's judgemental and stigmatizing how she phrases things, constantly referring to 'them', as if people with suicidal tendencies are that bunch of personas. Saying how 'stupid' these ideas are, as if she has no compassion, understanding and experience in accompanying people who go through this and the severity and reality of it. Her suggestions are party disempowering and controlling. If anything, people with this experience to have suicidal phases don't need more stigmatizing. Plus I find it irritating that someone talking about this is tipping back her stiletto heels, as if she's on a cocktail dinner (yes body language speaks). I loved the 'philosophers tube's adressing of this topic helpful, as well as Patrick teahans work, who is so compassionate and kind. Be kind to yourself you out there.

@@23angelpie I seriously don't want to shame or judge anyone (men or woman or nb) for how they dress. What I find irritating is indeed, what yoi point too: that in this serious topic she draws her attention to herself, instead of allowing space to focus on the severity. Her body language is almost chatty and at ease - it comes across as taking it lightly. Playing with your shoes is not a professional behavior, especially not with a grave topic, such as this. Also she talked about suicidal impulses, as if they were these silly momentary ideas of people who delude themselves or are inmature, completely ignoring deeper mental health topics, Family systemic issues, thar parents are usually a part of, trauma and on goes the list. It's not resolved by questioning the person and If not convinced to exercise control and supervision. It's exactly the superior, hierarchical entitled form or top down talk on relation to mental health, that actually is in the end not helpful and counterproductive.

Yes have to admit wearing a short skirt wasn't exactly the best for discussing a topic such as this. Had an element of look at me about it and disassociation. Maybe an academic viewpoint and definitely a sexual element to it. Every therapist has a different personality and genetic 'footprint' which may or may not suit the patient. Fortunately now, screening is done for psychological traits in training for Doctors in Australia hopefully precluding them from being just physicians with a scientific bent and a capitalist attitude.

@@lornm1856 You've apparently never have gone through suicidal ideation before. I don't think there's anything anyone can say to convince you that you're wrong. But I'll try, as someone who has faced both types of suicidal ideation; The first, and most common form of suicidal ideation is _involuntary_ ; this happens when someone goes through a mental breakdown, and the brain's chemistry is no longer working as intended - even if for brief moment. Most of the time, people who are in the state don't actually _want_ to end their lives. Their brains basically go on autopilot, their thinking is completely messed up, and they believe they literally have nothing to live for, and the worst possible feelings about themselves you can imagine. In cases like this, it should be treated like a medical emergency, not as a "choice" as you say. The other type, which is what I live with 99% of the time, is _voluntary_ , which I also call it as it is: euthanasia. People like this have thought long and hard about their lives, while there are in a good mental state, to know when they want out, for whatever reasons they judge. They may even add exceptions to said guidelines, if circumstances change. The most simplest of guidelines is something along the lines of "if I get dementia, I want to end my life while I still can," but they can be far more complex, including life goals at a certain point of their lives. In cases like that, it really _is_ their choice, and it is _extremely_ difficult to talk someone out of such a plan, unless you can help them achieve their life goals that will help them meet their criteria to not end their lives.

@@laura-anne9782 In a few years I'll be 40. Once I'm 40 because of ageism, it will be weird if I were to hang out with people younger than me. I still struggle with social connections. I still don't have a career, and I struggle tremendously with interviews. My access to mental health support is very limited due to severe understaffing of my local resources, and I can't afford paid resources (I've been on a waiting list for over six months). My financial situation is tenuous at best. I have lost my mother and my father isn't someone I can respect anymore. I have very few family connections left. Things keep getting harder and harder and harder, and I don't think I'll ever be able to live outside of an apartment. Even when I was a kid I decided that if I didn't have a life partner by 35, I would end my life. I've exceeded that amount, but my hard limit is 40. And with my Mental Health starting to get worse by the year, and the fact that I've started _involuntarily_ attempting to end my life (only spared because my plan was thought out well in advance and provides a grace period to 'cool off')... if my life prospects don't turn themselves around in the near future - or I end up homeless - I would rather remove myself, so I'm no longer a burden to society. And this is something I feel and have decided regardless of whether I'm in a great mood or I'm in the lowest of lows. I call it euthanasia for mental health. Also, speaking of mental health support, I went to the crisis ward last year. The first time I tried to admit myself they refused to accept me because I was too well-spoken for someone who was at threat of ending their lives. And after further persistence and a second attempt to go to the ward that same day, the very next morning, the psychiatrist told me it was my choice whether I chose to live or die. Tragic thing is, she's absolutely right in my case. Which is also the reason why I tend to bury her career before I go.

@@TheEDFLegacy First of all and I'm going to be blunt here as I think you need to here it. This isn't a logical reason to end your life. You've had it tough, that's all and your overcrowding your own world with emotions that your now stick in a rut. Have you ever heard that phrase " You cannot love someone until you love yourself?" It is very true. I've been where you've been. I too have lost my mother, Dad hasn't been there for me, lost respect for him years ago. However now due to the help I have got, we have a better relationship. I have borderline personality disorder, so I understand too your concerns/issues with fitting in. It doesn't mean though that this will never happen. You just haven't met the right groups of friends who haven't accepted you for you. There is one big thing though. You have to make that first step in admitting there is a problem here. You can't blame the world around you and everyone else. I'm not saying this is your fault either - because it's not. What I'm saying is - we all need to be aware of ourselves as well as others - especially our own thoughts. You say about ageism - tbh.. I have never known any such thing and if you have people in your life talking about things like that.. then they arn't worth your time anyway. It's not weird to hang around with people a few years younger than you. As long as your you, and your happy - that's all that matters. This "burden to society" talk, again - sounds more like depression to me than logic. You are not a burden. I don't know you, but I know if I did meet you I'd take the time to say hello and become your friend. The mental health team arn't wrong in saying it's up to you what you do. It is your life at the end of the day. However, I personally think your making a big mistake. I've been where you are and I know how your feeling and there is nothing wrong with accepting you need help. Sending hugs

@@laura-anne9782 Thanks. 🙂 Truthfully, it's trying to untangle the logic from the emotion that's kept me alive. One of the big reasons why I decided to keep going recently is because I'm finally getting the support I need. I can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel. But at the same time I'm walking a tightrope between total disaster and full success. If I end up in total disaster... I honestly don't want to have to climb back out of it. I'm so tired these days of trying to put all the fires without support. For the record, I'm really glad you're still here. You seem to be a really nice person, and I appreciate that. And borderline personality disorder is a real doozy. I know people personally who have it, and I honestly don't know how people can live with the condition. But they do, and they and you deserve all the credit for pushing through the spite at all.

If your not getting the support, I would definatly advise getting a second opinion from maybe another doctor or psychiatrist. You have full rights to do so and I honestly wish you the best. By the way - that light at the end of the tunnel - keep focusing on it. Even if it feels like a tiny glow worm in darkness, it's always there. Don't lose focus. Keep pushing on. You've got this. 2Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. Matthew 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 2Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. Galatians 6:7 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 1Corinthians 1:18-21 18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Revelation 3:15-20 15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Matthew 7:20-26 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 2Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Philippians 2:10-11 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Acts 5:42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Acts 16:30-31 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. JESUS CHRIST IS LORD. ONLY JESUS SAVES.
