You should always reach out to your references before sharing them with a potential employer because 1) you want them to be prepared, and 2) you want to make sure that they have good things to say about you!
Here’s an email template you can use and adjust -
Hi, [insert reference name]! I hope that you’re doing well. I’m reaching out because I’ve been offered the role of [insert position title] at [insert company name], and I’ve been asked to provide references. I had a great experience working with you at [insert company name], and if you’re willing I’d love to include you as a reference, as I think you’d be able to accurately explain the work I did and the type of team member that I am. I’ll share both the job posting and my resume in advance for your review so you have a bit more context. Please let me know what you think. Thanks in advance, [insert your name].
