IDE hard drives fell out of fashion ages ago, however many of them still work just fine. If you've got an IDE hard drive lying around, what can you do with it? In this video we look at one of the cheapest and most practical ways to put your IDE hard drive to use!

I was digging around the house and found couple of IDE drives and was thinking of repurposing them into small HTPC-like build however IDE to SATA adapter is about $10 and enclosure is another $10 and for $20 you can find 1TB SATA 3 internal drive or 500GB + SATA to USB enclosure, as for IDE/PATA I guess the only thing left to do is to recycle it.

I have original transcend IDE hdd casing. It works very well.

Both thsoe drives are IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) compared to an older IBM standard from the 80s. The one with the "funky" pins is PATA (Parallel ATA). Both SATA and PATA are the same communication standard but using different cables.

Agree with everything, except the bit about the funky pins one being called PATA. You can’t just rename something when it becomes obsolete. That is a hard drive with an (E)IDE interface and it uses the ATA(PI) protocol. It’s written on the drives themselves, written on the cables, written on the mainboards and written in their manuals since 1986. The term “PATA” was first used around 2003, after IDE drives had become obsolete with the introduction of SATA drives as an unnecessary way of distinguishing between them. This thoroughly unnecessary attempt to back-acronym caused so much confusion at the time and I refuse to use the new terminology.

I have a couple really old 1992 5" hard drives i'd like to pull data out of. do you know where i can get an adapter for those? It's a very large 50 pin connector. Thank you...

A microSD card would be cheaper, smaller, faster and have bigger capacity than this drive 😅 Yet recycling is a good reason 😊

That is true though I have a drawer of old working drives that I keep hesitating to just throw. Those cases seem to be more expensive recently. One thing in my experience sd cards definitely fail on me more often than hard drives and at least hard drives will give you some warning sounds when starting to fail.

I used this adaptor but something went wrong... My pc detects new usb device but nothing shows up

See if the dive shows up in disk management. You may need to format the disk before it is usable. I hope that helps and thanks for watching.

@@GizmoJoeReviewsTech thanks!!!! I have found it in disk management but couldn't access data without formatting. Some disc data recovery software helped me get out my old files !!!
