I wanted to make a quick video of what to look for when purchasing a used commercial mower so you don't end up buying a money pit.
This is a mower I purchased new back in approximately 1998, used it a few years while my brother and I mowed lawns. After that my dad's been using it on a half acre lot.
Good quality parts add up. I'm not saying to buy or not but just so viewers have an idea what to expect.
This mower has approximately 800 hours on it, over it's life it's had, transmission, electric clutch, all tires, run flats on front, muffler, deck belts, drive belts replaced.

Your scag is a prime example that good maintenance is the life blood of a machine. In 2005 I bought a used 48 hydro walk behind with about 800 hours, bought it for 1200 bucks. I used it for my mowing business 3 years with minimal issues. Sold it to a friend with the matching scag orange velke for 1500. I recently ordered a new 36 swzt hydro drive for my new house, and of course will be installing a wright velke sulky

I agree so much is down to maintenance and storage…people don’t realize how keeping equipment out under a tarp beats it up.

You probably had a manual clutch then, before I bought this unit I borrowed a Randsom w/ a manual clutch...I bet it still is around mowing someones lawn even today!!!

Yup just linkage. Might be . Dad sold It when moved, I did a few things to it because he didnt really maintain it as much as it should of. Really improved the performance. It was a classic! @@jamesbubnick Ill get one when I have a yard again. Big Orange is a good machine

@@GhettoWagon I'll probably by the 30" walk behind w/ the Kohler wheels that was recently released or if I get a big lawn I'd buy one of these. These are fantastic machines.

I got mine used off marketplace and it worked fine for a month or two, until I started having issues with my PTO.

I’ve switched the pto a few time but the last time I I messed up. The wiring was loose and got frayed, I’d check for that and also the pto has an air gap, and might need adjustment. If not pro’s are expensive and can turn a good deal into a bad one really quickly.

@@jamesbubnick for sure, you never really know how much is wrong with it after extended use. I had a guy look at it and he re soldered the wires that were burnt out but I'm still having the same issue. Ordered a new blade engage switch box hopefully that's the issue.

If your Scag still has the metal tag by the transmission it will tell you the model/serial and you can download the manual and find the part number on Scag’s website. I don’t know the part number off the top of my head.

lol...I'm glad the video answered that question. I remember it as an option when I purchased this new but didn't buy it. I want to say I found it maybe 10 years ago on CL for like 20 bucks and bought it. I think I've used it a handful of times when my unit got stuck in the mud. The backyard gets crazy wet and being a belt drive it doesn't do too well in the spring....

I wish I bought mine with the Kawasaki engine, back when I bought it the dealer convinced my brother and I to go with the Kohler. These Kohler are pretty good but to me nothing is as good as a Kawasaki or Honda. I almost put a Kawasaki on it a few months ago as the Kohler was giving me issues and I just about had it. The only bad thing on this is the deck design is old and the new ones provide a better cut.

What part number is the muffler?
@jamesbubnick
@jamesbubnick 3 месяца назад
It should be part number: Kohler 12 068 01-S I like to find my part numbers using part tree's website then check on ebay for NOS. The muffler is pretty expensive, but the older Kohler parts are all pretty expensive. I just put a new carb on this unit OEM $265 and a new coil OEM $80. Then again the original parts were over 25 years old so they provided a long service life.
