Always participate. My go to look is an evening gown with a plunging neckline, usually sequins, always a lot of perfume, full makeup, always stilettos.

I've been dreading formal night, even had to go out and buy a couple of white shirts because I didn't own any! Hoping I'll still fit in my black trousers and jacket by the time of the cruise. I'd call your level #1 'smart casual' and #2 'business casual' - both of which I'm capable of but formal is another matter!

Hi guys. Thanks for the info. Do you guys take your own formal night pics? If so, do you have any tips for making them look professional, unique, interesting? Sometimes, the photography backgrounds look a little boring/cheesy. If you could give us tips on the best places to take pics on cruise ships (maybe the library, piano bar, staircase, etc), how to pose for these shots, any special camera settings that'b great.

Hi! We don't really take formal night photos. Cullen will take some photos for my Instagram, but that is about the extent of it. I would try staircases, any interesting venues on the ship, and any place that is well lit. It obviously depends on the ship, though.

Are we allowed to bring boat shoes or flip flops for formal night? Or we got to bring the 'actual' nice shoes?

They typically don't like flip flops in the dining rooms, but nice sandals and boat shoes will work!

Your dressy casual for women seems more like formal to me. Dressy casual can be pants or skirt and top .

Formal nights are an anachronism. It's also incongruent with the notion of a cruise ship vacation. I have to dress formally everyday in my job as an attorney in a major metropolitan area. I don't like it but it is a requirement especially when entertaining clients. The last thing I want do on vacation is to attend a dinner engagement on formal night while on a cruise. It's just silly. Like playing dress up as a child. It's gotta go.
