The NHL's Board of Governors approved the relocation of the Arizona Coyotes to northern Utah Thursday, with the team set to take the ice next season. The move was the final step in a process that began making headlines last week.

While expected, especially after the league's executive committee approved the move Tuesday, the stamp of approval by NHL owners opens a new era for hockey in the Beehive State as Utah welcomes another professional sports franchise.
“As everyone knows, Utah is a vibrant and thriving state, and we are thrilled to be a part of it,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Brodie you are too damn critical, I’m in Arizona my daughter worked for the Coyotes but as I’ve followed to team it’s clear that playing in Z was one huge mess after another and it’s time this floundering franchise got new light. You can’t expect the fans in Utah as well as the media to be rational, they are simply THRILLED to have a new team. Cut em some slack. Nobody is hiding the fact that the state government ponied up $900 million, it was in discussion for weeks.

Yea i dont get why so much vitriol is being thrown towards Utah. They weren't the ones who messed it up. Ryan wanted a team and saw one struggling to find a home and pounced. Utahns being excited about it is not a bad a thing.

Future Utah Hockey Club fan (and new subscriber) here. I really enjoy your channel commentary. I especially enjoy how you try to present both sides of this AZ/UT drama without dragging either side and in good humor. While I feel bad that AZ is losing their team , the misdirected anger towards "Salt Lake" makes zero sense. This was a failure of both team management and Arizona politicians. The blame should be directed there. If they had been able to work together to meet the teams needs, the team would still be around. Maybe Arizonians can think of that next time they vote in an election. Honestly there are many cities that would have jumped at the opportunity to have a team, so insulting an entire community is pretty dumb.

Actually no...if you go by climate definitions, Phoenix has a hot desert climate (Köppen: BWh), typical of the Sonoran Desert. SLC. on the other hand, has either a Mediterranean climate (Csa) or dry-summer continental climate (Dsa) depending on which variant of the system is used. “Intermountain West” is a blanket term to describe mostly the region of the Great Basin and Northern Rockies. More broadly the Southwest as well. Everything between the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada’s/Cascades, Excluding the West Coast. Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. It’s a way of describing the region that Utah is particularly fond of, because we are the geographic center of it. 🥰☺️

I am sad to see the Cyottes leave, but let's face it. They should of left 10 years ago. Garry Bettman & the NHL held on too long this situation of bad ownership after bad ownership. Salt Lake City doesn't suck, it was the different ownerships that sucked over the years & their relationship with the city's of Arizona that cause this inevitable dismay. The team should of gone to Quebec, but that's a whole different discussion. I hope the Cyottes come back, but under different ownership. Even Bizz said so himself. They need a good owner.

Ok, Brodie, so I do feel sorry for the hockey fans in Arizona. AND, a few of their cities are definitely more highly rated in terms of population/ability to support a sports franchise. BUT, the state never showed any particular enthusiasm-overall-towards the old Winnipeg Jets' arrival. Honestly, when you boil it all down, it's about entertainment. There are many, many people who do not believe in having their tax money used to enrich the entertainment industry. I have to respect that. Then again, it's sad for many who truly enjoy various forms of entertainment, that it really "takes a village" to support a sports franchise. God bless Utah-no matter their reasoning-for showing a desire to bring a team to their state. I pray for them to succeed. I've always felt awful when a team ends up moving/abandoning their original foundation! Yet, I have little forgiveness in seeing new teams continue to go to certain cities that have proven they will not show support them. Anyway, being an old man, I still remember the Golden Eagles...the Phoenix Roadrunners, the San Diego Gulls...was it the Portland Buckaroos? And the Seattle Totems. Back in the day, some of our NHL heroes who continued to play-past their prime-ended up finishing up their careers in the WHL. Anyway, I stick by my choice of "the Blizzard" with icy blue and white uniforms. Haven't, yet, formalized a thought for their second jersey, but I think of purity when I think of Salt Lake City. Perhaps it can be the opposite of said icy blue & white? Maybe dark and broody? Good luck to Salt Lake City and it's new team!!!

I've enjoyed watching your series of commentaries of interviews and media coverage of this NHL move of the Coyotes from Arizona to Utah. First I have to say I feel bad for the Coyotes fans --really awful losing their team, but it does seem like the arena situation was a complicated mess! An NHL team playing in a 4500 seat arena? Even the ECHL Utah Grizzlies have a 12,000 seat arena (the Maverick Center). Hopefully that new arena down there can get built (come out of the ground) within the allotted 5 years. Salt Lake City does have Ice Hockey History, though of course not NHL. The IHL Salt Lake Golden Eagles from 1969-1994 played in the Salt Palace and Delta Center and the Current Grizzlies from 1994 played in the Delta Center and Maverick Center. A number of NHL players came through Salt Lake. Theo Fleury and Dan Plante come to mind. BTW, google Dan Plante's Golden Eagles Jersey -- so cool. Fierce Golden Eagle face and Eagle feathers on lower part of the Jersey. The Golden Eagle is the State of Utah's bird of pray. Hope the Smiths keep that in mind. I watched many Golden Eagles and Grizzlies games at the Salt Palace and Delta center, including watching fans through salmon onto the Ice to feed the Bears when they scored! Anyway, I'm really more of a baseball fan and have been following this NHL excited in hopes that this is a precursor of the Big League Utah coalition landing a MLB team in Utah in the not too distant future. BTW, most of Utah is indeed desert though maybe not so hot and dry like Arizona. Not a lot grows here without the help of irrigation. And we do actually have Coyotes here. FWIW, Roadrunners can be found in southern Utah. Speaking of which, I wonder what will happen to the Grizzlies now? I haven heard any talk about that.

Black Bear is the name of a group based in Maryland that is buying up a bunch of ice rinks and youth teams in the northeast, nearly monopolizing the market and creating a league for them to play amongst themselves and not with the remaining non-Black Bear team. They are fiercely active on self-branding in the youth hockey world, and I can’t see another hockey organization, even an NHL team partway across the country, using the name without some sort of legal battle.

They are going to retrofit the Delta Center but have gotten the land approval for building a new arena and entertainment district too. Also all locals understand what the bill means as far as taxes. Some like it, some don't, but its not a secret to the locals. And i know you're not happy about the relocation, but the predisposition to rag on local news and fans for being excited about this isn't fair to them.

I think Blizzard is the best choice presented so far - gotta pick something winter-related IMO. If they go with a muscular "Abominable Snowman" in their logo and as a mascot, that would be the best of both worlds. I also like the mountain peaks on the back of the jerseys at the shoulders - very nice touch.

@@iplayfhorn The probable reason why the IOC doesn't have an issue with Lyon and Marseilles is because both of those teams were established well before copyright infringement was a thing. Marseilles was established in 1899 (the first Olympics took place in 1896) and Lyon was formed in 1950.

No hard feelings about S.L.C sucks, we have thick skin and understand the emotions. UT. & AZ are similar, we have mountains in the north & a lot of desert outside the Wasatch front. The weather is usually good with a couple weeks too hot & a couple that are cold. We were the 2nd driest state and probably still close to that. Good show and hope that everything works out for AZ.

It's very easy to make vinyl, Brodie. They could have had that NHL vinyl put together in less than 2 hours. Gary Bettman and Ryan Smith only had single lines in that hype video, very easy to put that together. "Intermountain West" is a common phrase used in Utah, as well as in parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho. Plenty of us who live in Utah are very mad at Spencer Cox and our politicians for being willing to spend this kind of money on sports, especially when times are so tough.

"Can they pull this off" is a silly question for people to ask. Them being the owners if the basketball team meand they can do what they meed to do without worrying about a 3rd party being upset and blocking things you want/need to do. There are engineers and contractors that will coear their schedules to get in on this because that means theyll be first in the call list wheb the reap renovation (or pitebtially new build if they decide to go that route) Basketball to hockey conversion really isnt that bad in the grand scheme of things and theyll be able to properly plan any long term changes based on their shirt term fixes. They just need to make sure they dont oversell themselves with season tickets. You dint want to shut out the fans that cant afford those but want to go to 1 - 4 games a year, those are your majority base and theyll spend more in concessions than season ticket holders. I remember as a season ticket holder in the esroy years of the bolts growing up (me dad gpa and aunt) we always stopped on the way in before getting to the thunderdome and ice palace (now the amalie) and rarely got concessions or souvenirs
