In this episode, Dave lays out the facts of the open conflict that occurred between Latter-day Saints and mobs of Missourrians in 1838. Ultimately, the conflict resulted in the forced expulsion of Latter-day Saints from the state of Missouri.

I also recommend the book “Rough Stone Rolling,” by Richard Bushman, which is excellently well-researched.
Notes:
-Why were things so tense between Missourians and Latter-day Saints? 5 reasons listed here: bit.ly/2CEBgLd
-Bushman mentions that Latter-day Saint forces moved into Gallatin, Millport, and Splawn’s Ridge. According to a directory of Daviess County “Towns, Villages, and Hamlets Past and Present,” Splawn’s Ridge was located “about 3 miles east of Gallatin, and near what afterward became the town of Millport...”
-“Mormon strategy went beyond protection of their own people to attacking suspected mobbers. Mormon militia were to confiscate the property of hostile Daviess citizens and force them to move, thus destroying the vigilantes’ home base. Enemies only were to be attacked. The confiscated property was to be deposited in the bishop’s storehouse for the use of Mormons who had suffered losses in earlier battles.” -Bushman, pg. 362.
-Some Saints claimed that mobbers were burning their own houses/buildings just to make the Saints look bad. Maybe, but I doubt it. It’s generally accepted that throughout the “war,” both parties pillaged and burned each other’s stuff. The injustice in it all is that the Saints were the ones the law came down hard on, while the mobs of Missourrians (the cause of the Saints’ desperation) were free to do as they pleased.
-”On November 1, Far West surrendered. The soldiers searched the city for firearms, threatening and ridiculing the Saints. A few days later, a force dispatched to Adam-ondi-Ahman accepted the surrender of the mormon leaders, who followed Joseph’s instructions not to resist. The Mormon men came one by one to a table where they signed away their property to the state of Missouri while militia men stood by and struck anyone who protested. By this time the Mormons were willing to go. Marauders were attacking outlying farms, molesting women, whipping men, and killing animals. [Albert] Rockwood reported that ‘orders from the governor are to exterminate the Mormons, the Brethren are hunted as wild game and shot down several have been shot in site of the City, womin [sic] are ravished and houses rifled, one woman has been killed within less than 2 miles of this City, we are here as captives strictly guarded by the Malitia [sic] no person is allowed to go out of the City.’” -Richard Bushman, Rough Stone Rolling, pg. 367.

@@nicomurder Oh, you mean that event that happened 20 years after this and is not part of this so called "war?" The event not tied to the church and that Brigham Young condemned? The one where John D. Lee was tried for murder and executed (unlike anything that happened to those mobs in Missouri.) The one that may or may not have been the local Paiute? That event?? Mountain Meadows wasn't done by the saints, wasn't even connected to anything in Missouri, was less brutal that was done in Missouri, and condemned by Brigham Young. You want to talk about the Mormon-Missouri "War" then let's talk about Han's Mill.

@@brettmajeske3525 Wow, I'm honored you're asking. I think the shortest answer is Joseph was the best and worst thing for early saints. The general membership knew him as amazingly wonderful. But, like today, most weren't aware of his secret activities. When some found out they were deeply concerned and even angry. Joseph was powerful, and some didn't trust him with so much increasing power. One of the public messages from Joseph was that God had given the saints the land now occupied by their enemies. (Doctrine and Covenants 52 : 42-44) If I was a non-member with a home nearby that would spook me. It sounds reminiscent of Joshua's conquests in the old testament. A book I'm interested in reading someday from someone I think is still a believer is D Michael Quinn's "Origins of power". Thanks for asking. I'm no expert, but am apt to be suspicious of powerful people myself. Hope what I've written helps. I'm happy with any religion you want to be in as long as kindness is involved. Take care
@brettmajeske3525
@brettmajeske3525 3 года назад
@@leem3299 Well if you've read the D & C would would know the Saints were commend to purchase the land. Many of the people complaining about LDS moving in were the same people selling them land. Most of the Saints were never reimbursed for the land they bought after the Extermination Order forced them to leave. Others came in and moved into the homes and buildings the Saints built. Could the Saints have been more polite? Certainly! But rudeness is hardly a justification for violence. According to the Manifesto written by the Mob leaders the principle reason given for expelling the Saints was their equal treatment of Blacks and Native Americans. They claimed their slaves might long for freedom.

I've seen a drawing of "A drawing of "Lieutenant-General Joseph Smith" with sword drawn." He organized an army and marched "to Missouri to 'redeem Zion.' "Of the Prophet's appearance as a Lieutenant General at the head of the Nauvoo Legion, Lyman L. Woods recalled, 'I have seen him on a white horse wearing the uniform of a general.... He was leading a parade of the Legion and looked like a god' " Warsaw Signal reported: "How military these people are becoming! Everything they say or do seems to breathe the spirit of military tactics. Their prophet appears, on all occasions, in his sp[l]endid regimental dress signs his name Lieut. General, and more titles are to be found in the Nauvoo Legion, than any one book on military tactics can produce; ... Truly fighting must, be a part of the creed of these Saints!" "Heber C. Kimball, a member of the first Presidency under Brigham Young, said that the time would come when people would 'prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a God'" Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, page 289. Brigham Young claimed that no one would enter the celestial kingdom without the consent of Joseph Smith. The History of the Church: ... no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith.... Every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are ... I cannot go there without his consent.... *He reigns there as supreme a being in his sphere, capacity, and calling, as God does in heaven* (vol. 7, p. 289). I combat the errors of ages; I meet the violence of mobs; I cope with illegal proceedings from executive authority; I cut the gordian knot of powers, and I solve mathematical problems of universities, with truth-diamond truth; and God is my "right hand man" (vol. 6, p. 78). "If they want a beardless boy to whip all the world, I will get on the top of a mountain and crow like a rooster: I shall always beat them.... I have more to boast of than ever any man had. *I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I,* The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet (vol. 6, pp. 408-9)." It goes on and on.

@@onesmoothstone5680 Answer - The Bible never does say he wouldn't. A great prophet in the Book of Mormon does clarify the importance of loving God: "Yea, come unto Christ, and be be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God." Moroni 10:32. And this, my friend, is the power of God that Christians cannot deny, and the reason that the Latter-day Saints, who are extremely devout Christians and lovers of Christ, were willing to go through the persecutions that they did.

@brettmajeske3525
@brettmajeske3525 3 года назад
@@BrendonKing Well beside that the original posters complaint was not about factual integrity, but offering alternative points or view or opinions, it is not that reality is interpretative, but documentation. Donald Trump has documented that he won the 2020 Election, while every major News outlet has documented that Biden won. Historical documentation is rarely as complete as academics would prefer, leaving not only motivation but often some details indeterminate. I will use as an example one of the more common disputes between LDS Apologists and Antagonists. It is clearly documented that Joseph Smith was sealed to about 34 women. It is far less well documented how many of those with which JS may have had a sexual relationship. Antagonists often use the sealings themselves as evidence that JS not only had sex with several women, but claim he was a pedophile who had sex with 14 year olds. This is in spite of personal journals from about half of the women indicating that their relationships were celibate, including Helen Mar Kimball, the 14 child in question. OF the 34 women sealed to JS, only two ever made a claim of having a sexual relationship, one of which was Emma. The others claim of having had JS's child has been disproven by DNA evidence. A claim that was not made until after his death. All the documentation that exists still leaves plenty of room open for interpretation. Another case of differing documentation is what method JS use to translate the Book of the Mormon. Four different scribes have four different accounts. Antagonists like to reduce it to a true false binary. If Joseph used the brown or white Seer Stone at one point, they argue, that means to them he never used the Plates at any point. Most of historical research is finding documented sources, and then evaluating the source's potential accuracy, especially when multiple sources disagree. To be honest, LDS Apologists are often also too quick to accept an historical source that supports their position without due diligence determining appropriate accuracy. Both sides too often treat their favored documentation as absolute and corrigible. Professional academic historians however understand that at best history is a guessing game, peppered with few but important corrigible facts.

One relevant detail was left out. On July 4, Sidney Rigdon gave a speech where he threatened to exterminate any mob who came against them. This quote is from the Joseph Smith Papers: "We take God and all the holy angels to witness this day, that we warn all men in the name of Jesus Christ, to come on us no more forever, for from this hour, we will bear it no more, our rights shall no more be trampled on with impunity. The man or the set of men, who attempts it, does it at the expense of their lives. And that mob that comes on us to disturb us; it shall be between us and them a war of extermination, for we will follow them, till the last drop of their blood is spilled, or else they will have to exterminate us: for we will carry the seat of war to their own houses, and their own families, and one party or the other shall be utterly destroyed.-Remember it then all Men. " This led to the creation of the Danites and the start of the war. I believe members should know who first issued the extermination order.
@TheItalianPepe
@TheItalianPepe 9 месяцев назад
And do you blame them? The members of the time were defending their lives, families and homes. They received nothing but persecution in return for wanting to live their lives in peace. Another point, do you understand what an extermination order is? It's basically a call for genocide. The Mormons did not call for genocide. They warned the mobs if they persisted in causing harm to the Saints, the Saints would finish the fight, however necessary. That's self defense, not a call for genocide, which is what the mobs and the governor of Missouri wanted. Two very different things.
