I just love those Z-1 900's, KZ900/1000's, I have a '74 Z-1A, '75 Z-1B, and a '76 KZ900 LTD, these bikes fall into my hands everytime unexpectedly!! I sure as hell don't mind it at all, these KAWASAKI'S are my favorite motorcycles of all time!!! I remember you couldn't get any parts at one point, now you can get everything!!! That's why I'm restoring mine to almost original!!! KAWASAKI FOR LIFE

When I was a teenager in the mid seventies a dude rode through town on a Kawasaki 900 with a four into one Kirker header. I still remember that smooth sound of power. Similar to a two wheeled Porsche Carrera. 😎

A true GEM, WoW! What a cool collection. You can tell this old timer' really loves the bikes by the attention to detail he shows in his re-conditioning work. One of the best motorcycle vids I have seen in a long time. I rode Hondas back in the early 70's but in mid 80's I purchased a 78 KZ 650 and loved it. I later sold it and bought a 79 KZ 1000. Don't do what I did, and listen to your wife and sell it. I am 68 now and have balance problems so unfortunatly my bike riding days are over. But enjoy watching shows like this. These two rocked.

I was drooling over those 900's...Good Grief! I used to work at 2 different Kawasaki's in Bradenton and Charlotte from 16 to 19 before joining the Marines. I loved working on and riding the Z1's, KZ's, GPZ's, LTD's, CSR's and my favorites the 2-strokes. I had 3 of them, a 1974 S3-400, and 2 1975 H-1 500's that were tricked out with racing parts. I want my 2--strokes back along with my custom Kawasaki 1200. This video takes me back...Thanks

That is very impressive. In 2011 I bought a 1977 z1000 with a Z1 exhaust (4-4), the bike I´ve been adoring from 1977 on, age 14. I can fully understand someone collecting parts and bikes for a build or even a business. But 24 engines is a lot. I also have a z1 frame #17xxx, but no engine, just a cylinder head, looking for an engine. Memories are one thing. Living it up is the other. The z1 is the bike to have anyway, forever.

I've owned several Z1s, including 2 1974 Z1As, and a brand new 1975 Z1B. The 1975 cost me $2,525.00 otd w/a sissy bar and pad!!! KAW made a major mistake in the 1975 model year; they started making the transmission gears using powder metal (known as investment cast today) technology. It wasn't totally down pat yet, and my trans blew at around 3,000 miles. Everything replaced under warranty. I put almost 60,000 miles on the bike, and only rebuilt it because the newer, faster Honda CBX, Yamaha XS Eleven, and Suzuki GS1000 all came out in 1978. By 1980, those 60,000 miles had started to slightly degrade the performance, not much. But my brother in law bought a Yammie 1100, and put a whopping on me! So I looked up Pops Yoshimuras phone#, bought his stage 1 cams, bought a KZ 1000 engine and used those cases, had Pops Y bore the 1000 cylinder block to an ll05cc 73mm bore, had him weld my lighter Z1B crankshaft, used the best billet gears from the 2 74s, and I put it all together with the new pistons, rings, and an Andrew's Products overdrive 5th gear. WHATTA BEAST!!!! It would beat Suzuki GS1100s-Pretty easily, too!!! As for my brother in laws XS1100, I could now beat him riding DOUBLE!!!!

I grew up around a 73 Z1. My next door neighbor had one, it had a charging issue that he couldn't figure out what was wrong so it sat in a shed till I bought it. I later found out the bolt that holds the flywheel on the crank broke and ground the wood drift key grove away and the needle bearing that the starter gear floats on the crank disintegrated it from the flywheel locking up, ended up selling cause there wasn't a lot of replacement parts from what I was told. I regret it still to this day. I was about 20 years old when I got it in around 2000 sure wish I could have found out about Jim back then! I'd still have the bike till this day! Really want to buy a bike from Jim called him today with no luck of getting him on the line, left a message sure hope he calls me back! There's nothing better than that distinct sound of a Z1 at 90 on the hwy with plenty power left to bury the speedo.

What a cool cool video. Thank you sooo much for putting this together! Back in ‘80 I bought a GS1000L new (paid $3600 for it off the showroom floor), cuz a good friend of mine had a 79 KZ1000. We rat raced all over the place, should have never survived, but we both did. I could beat him out of the hole by about 4 lengths up to mid 2nd gear and then we’d stay about that distance apart all the way till we shut it down. Man that was fun.

Another great vid from Jack and CycleDrag. A piece of Americana for sure. For me a blast from the past, as I grew up in western Pennsylvania and got into motorcycles, and drag racing them,(Kawasaki's), in the early 70's. I used to ride my 71-H1 500 triple from outside of Pittsburgh to Keystone Raceway Park for the weekend drags. More than once I came home with a bracket winner 1st place check, about 30+ dollars. Used to race a regular they called ' The one-handed bandit". He lost a hand in Vietnam, but still loved to drag race. He had the first 900 kawi at the track. Anyway I'll quit rambling for now, if you keep posting these video's …..

I have to add a followup here..I do some resto's as well as my stuff, and you need to understand the electrical load on everything. As you mentioned the Dyna upgrade, such as the Dyna2000, which is great, adds load to the electrics. They recommend the 2.2ohm coils, understanding that the lower the ohm, the higher the amp requirement, so from 3.0 ohm to 2.2 there is an increase of about 4.5 amps to the MAIN circuit. Also the computer adds to the load as well, and if your at the margins for the fuse, this will over load and pop it. Worse case, if you have an ancient and worn stator, you'll melt that down (which I did..doh). The 2.2 are great for racing, and they made great power in my GPZ, but cooked the electrics. I went to an LED head light, and back to new 3.0 coils, new modern stator and rectifier; no problems since. Just an FYI....might save somebody else a road side pickup from the wife..never a fun experience. :) PS: You can get pretty much everything for KZ/GPZ parts from webike.japan.com. The best performance stuff is PMC, Performance Motorcycle Creative, awesome stuff.

I was stationed at K I Sawyer AFB uper peninsula Mishagin in 1973. At the time, the Honda CB 750 or the H2 750 was the king. One day with friends riding around in the car, a bike coming in the opposite direction went by and knew this was something different. Later found out it was a Z1-900. Went to the dealership in Marquette and bought one. As a skinny nineteen year old having only owned a Honda 350, I was in Paradise. As I rode out the dealership parking lot, all came out to see if I would drop it, but no.

IT WAS QUICKER AND FASTER THAN ITS BIGGER BROTHER, THE ZL1000. 0 TO 60 IN 2.2 SECONDS, NO OTHER BIKE NOR CAR HAS BEEN ABLE TO MATCH THAT ( providing it is stock ), AND IT BEING A 6 SPEED, HIGH R.P.M.s AT IDLE AND SHAFT DRIVE PLUS WATER COOLED, BEST BIKE I HAVE EVER OWNED ! ! !
