This episode was so heartening. Coming from a vibrant Christian background, I've struggled with agnosticism for a long time, and am ashamed of my lack of faith. However, godlessness is an abyss to me, and I, too, seek meaning among the people of God. Hearing Ali and Glenn's comments remind me that Jesus said, "Whoever comes to Me, I will by no means cast out," airtight theology aside.

Incredibly helpful to have your thoughts on this! I felt the same frustration in the lack of 'root' discussion at ARC- but it was confusing - there was also a real hope in this discussion taking place and some of the fantastic exploration made. I don't think it could have happened even a few years ago. I'm glad you've reminded me - it's too easy to be cynical!

When a thinking person like Ayaan chooses Jesus it shows that when you look at the evidence objectively, any intelligent person can see that the only logical conclusion is that Jesus is everything the Bible says He is. Glenn. This is a letter I wrote to The Australian last week: Further to several recent references in The Australian to historical Christian anti-Judaism, look no further than Jesus who called Jewish religious leaders “vipers” and “hypocrites.” They responded by having him crucified which to my mind, proves his point. I suggest it is time to analyse behaviour by considering what all parties in the Jewish/Islamic conflict do by comparison to what they say. Regards Warren Mills.

I grant you that Jesus did indeed excoriate the religioue leaders of Israel in the Gospels, but I don’t see in His words any justification for the incredibly vicious antirsemitism that arose in the Church, despite the words of Paul in Roamns and the over-arching theme of God’s dealings with humanity and how the Jewish people feature in that. If the Pharisees and Scribes, etc, had not had Jesus crucified, there would be no salvation available to anyone, Jew or Gentile, because it was necessary that Jesus die and on the particular day of Passover. All of this was according to HIS will. The fact is that every single human being who ever lived stands guilty of the blood of Jesus, as it is the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2) that brought about the necessity of His crucifixion. The history of Christian persecutuon of Jews throughout the last 2000 years is an appalling record and all who love the JEWISH Saviour are grieved by it. Those who are not grieved by it are not true lovers of Jesus. It’s that simple.

I'm an atheist, and this blanket appreciation for Ayaan's foray into Christianity kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but probably not for the reasons you might think! Please read the rest of the comment before replying (but i must warn you this gets a tad "rant"-y). So, first of all; no, i'm not sad that she "deconverted" from atheism. She has autonomy to engage in her own journey, and if she finds that Christianity aligns better with her view of the transcendent (as well as being the means to defend Western values), more power to her. I also identify more with left-leaning ideas, whereas Ayaan seems to be more of a right-leaning individual, so i never felt particularly influenced by her. She wasn't in my "tribe", so to speak, so i don't view her deconversion as much of a loss. As a left-leaning person myself, i do keep tabs on many kinds of discourse which have to do with that. In particular, i find myself fascinated with the so called "Progressive" Christianity. Take, for instance, LGBT issues. It is a pervasive cultural stereotype that folks on the LGBT spectrum live the so-called "LGBT lifestyle"; a throuhougly secular, godless life, filled with sin and indiscriminated affirmation of the self. Within Progressive Christianity we see a genuine attempt at giving an alternative to these folks, to give them a life that's neither the illogical and dangerous denial of what sexual orientation/identity is, as presented in Traditional Christianity, nor is the thoughtless surrender to the "LGBT lifestyle". But here's the thing; maybe its the bubble of news i consume, but i often see discussions between Traditional Christians and Progressive Christians, and it is a consistent fact that Progressive Christians are denied the label of Christian altogether. To then see the same Tradidional Christians turn around and throw effusive praise at Ayaan for starting her journey, despite the fact that they're so quick to condemn their brothers for, at times, minute differences in application of theology (i encourage anyone to look at the responses to Andy Stanley, who isn't even a Progressive, by the way), reeks of hypocrisy. And for the record, yes, i'm aware that you directly address the fact that there were Christians who are skeptical of Ayaan's conversion story, and in fact this video is, in a sense, a reply to those Christians, but my impression was that, by and large, Christians did welcome Ayaan into Christianity proper, whereas the same can't be said for how Progressive Christians are received. If you want, i can link the ideas in this comment directly to the video. Consider the argument you present at 11:38 . As a moral conviction, let's take "I believe LGBT individuals have the right to be themselves in all spaces of society, including leadership of religious organizations if said individuals are so inclined and able, and that they and their families should be affirmed just like straight individuals are.". For Progressive Christians, the problem lies with premise 3; Traditional Christians will argue that the moral conviction i mentioned does not follow from the truth claims of Christianity, and isn't consistent with it either. And thus lies exposed the hypocrisy: someone celebrating Ayaan in this aspect has nothing to do with Christianity, but rather with whether she's aligned with their personal understanding of the material world or not. The creeds, the veracity of the Resurrection, none of that actually matters. As i said, Ayaan's journey is hers to follow, and i don't nurture strong feelings about it either way. But it is sad to see a once-venerated institution of humanity so hijacked for political aims.

I agree Big AI, there is no excuse for Christian’s bad behaviour. It’s not what say that counts as talk is cheap, it’s consistency between what we think, say and do that’s important. regarding the points she makes about the difference of Christianity and Islam just wait till she finds out that the Quran says (10:99) Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed, all of them entirely. Is it, then, up to you to compel People to believe? (2:256) Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And God heareth and knoweth all things. -- and then a whole chapter about the disbelievers and what to say and how to treat them, called "al kafirun, or disbelievers"-109 1. Say, “O disbelievers. 2. I do not worship what you worship. 3. Nor do you worship what I worship. 4. Nor do I serve what you serve. 5. Nor do you serve what I serve. 6. You have your way, and I have my way.” ____ so i don't know how the so called judeo-christian faith is saying this ^ ,and the Quran doesn't... although i accept that some Muslim countries are not totally in line with the scriptures... but that shouldn't confuse the mind of a scholar... in my opinion just as we don't equate Christian's atrocities (like the inquisition and forcing the christian belief on their colonies and tribal people) with the teachings of the Christ

@analogia_entis

If it doesn't tell us then you have made all answers EQUAL. Day has different meanings as all important words do. But you can't decide that science can restrict God to God's Laws. When Jesus changed water to wine, there was no talk of how old the wine was because what God does answers only to other things God has done,that is YOU could not give any discriminator about age of wine that would show the miraculous wine was not exactly like 50-year old aged wine. I am basically saying your 'science' is off, you don't get the difference between what something IS and how it got to be WHAT IT IS

The real issue for Ayaan is has she had her personal encounter with the risen Lord? It's the vertical dimension NOT the horizontal discussing whether or to what extent of the existence of the vertical. The result of the encounter with the risen Lord is the new birth of John 3:3. Maybe I'm wrong but I see Ayaan a bit like the wolf (friendly) getting used to Lt John Dunbar. She still needs to accept, perhaps that she too is a sinner needing redemption rather than evaluating the academics of which belief system is closest to God and therefore best for humanity.
