To me, this video shows how the crew has essentially allowed Richard's playstyle to dominate their internal meta, and for some reason they refuse to punish him for it. Hopefully with Tomer back this changes things. The meta they played this last season was getting a bit too predictable with Richard's "let everyone else duke it out while I low key ensure victory by gaslighting the table into thinking everyone else is a threat but me" strategy that was becoming way too obvious about half way through the season and on.

I think any averages would be more meaningful if they were accompanied by a standard deviation (or variance) value. One thing the ramp score nicely shows is that making land drops every turn tops ramping early and missing landdrops (due to bad luck, low land count or carddraw). AKA: playing more lands tops playing more ramp
@timbombadil4046
@timbombadil4046 Месяц назад
Getting repeated land drops is as much about playing enough card draw as it is about having enough land density. At a certain point you can have a hand full of lands and can't drop more than one a turn. Once there card draw is much better than greater land density.
@Shimatzu95
@Shimatzu95 Месяц назад
@@timbombadil4046 All I am saying is that land counts should be closer to 40 than 30 in most decks. Also as a side note fetchlands should also be played with more thought behind them. If you use 5 fetchlands in a given game (mostly cause you are 5 color or might play offcolor ones), thats effectively 10 lands less in your deck (between the fetchlands that went to the graveyard and the 5 targets that were fetched out). Your point about carddraw still stands.

@themonsoon117
@themonsoon117 Месяц назад
Phil does the same thing, but he loses a lot. Imo, the reason Richard wins is because most of the other players aren't focused on winning at all. They're trying to play the game 'responsibly' and 'how it should be played.' It's quite funny because Richard's approach to the game gets slaughtered by stax since you can just fill your board with a bunch of stax pieces that destroy his ability to do anything. Since Richard doesn't run spot removal, he ends up crippled by random stuff like winter moon. He'll need to play a boardwipe to get rid of even a single crippling stax piece. The only person who runs that is Crim, which is why he wins quite a bit even though he's archenemy a lot of the time.
@SilvanOrion
@SilvanOrion Месяц назад
@themonsoon117 you are right, of course. Part of it is also the meta of things, both group and RU-vid. They're first and foremost making games to entertain us, and stacks just isn't entertaining to watch.
@REWASDFGHJ
@REWASDFGHJ Месяц назад
@@themonsoon117 Yep. Richard is almost entirely a de facto podracer. He hates when anyone tries to slow him down and uses politics to try and answer the things in his way. Just a few speed bumps and he falls apart. The one thing that stops him from being a pure podracer is he runs wraths.

@SilvanOrion
@SilvanOrion Месяц назад
@REWASDFGHJ that's fair. When I think stacks, I just think of the "pay 2 more for every spell" kinda stuff. Things that only slow the game for others but don't really help progress it. Many of the ones you said I never think of as stacks, but they could still be considered as such.

My argument in favour of swords at a 4 player table has always been; commander has kill on sight creatures, and spot removal isnt ideal but sometimes you need a creature gone by turn 4. If all players have spot removal in their decks the chances of someone comboing/snowballing early is dropped by the good odds on removal. This favours control decks to an extent as a meta, but commander is a format for long games, and a meta with buffers built into the game through boardwipes and spot removal always led to a better table experience unless u are on voltron or similar aggro strategies.
@Spirited_skiing
@Spirited_skiing Месяц назад
I think you bring up some good points. I also think that a dynamic that isn’t talked about is If you play scary decks, it’s way better because the one big creature is coming for you. If you play Richard style of laying low until you pop off and win, you can usually lay low and survive to wrath

@exsnypre
@exsnypre Месяц назад
They should subtract out the first land drop they make each turn. It should only count rocks, sol lands (true sol lands not bounce lands which set you back a turn at the same time), and spells that put lands into play. This isn't a very useful number right now.
@PKDoesStuff
@PKDoesStuff Месяц назад
Also, there's diminishing returns on ramp and when it happens. Jumping from 1 to 4 with a turn 1 sol ring is much more impactful than going from 11 to 14 with a turn 8 sol ring, so eventually it should slow down.

Play them into counterspells/removal/etc. instead of the valuable cards in hand, since you know they can just come right back. @@justwantawholename My kinda people! I run both of those cards in my paper deck and I love it. It plays a lot of typical enchantress cards but it also finds room for random very unique or oddly specific enchantments and being able to copy so many is so much fun. Honestly, my favorite commander released in the last several years.

I dont play less than 12 basics ever. They enter untapped, they are safe from random ld in pick up games. Mana rocks are colorless anyway.

Honestly I like the turn 6ish meta I find to normally exist in all my local lgs when we play casual commander. As it lets me go through my decks EXCEPT how much certain art types will get stigmatized based off of their “finishers”. For instance, play a blue red deck with a jink combo. let’s say playing a spell card that punished your opponents based off of the amount of non-basic lands they played and then jumping through hoops to copy it without making infinite mana or one of the other cheese methods. You’re the bad guy. Play a Green based deck that makes 12+ mana by turn six and wins on the spot or build such an insurmountable board state with mana to spare for protection, that you basically have won. And it’s what the deck supposed to do.

Richard really said it. "I wouldn't power out sol ring with urzas saga because it dies to a wrath" Need to powercreep sol ring I guess 😂😂😂

46:19 Seth: Look how few mana rocks there are More than half of those artifacts are mana rocks, along with a Wayfarer's Bauble and Dowsing Dagger. There's a lot of fast mana here, pretty average I'd say
@crawdaddy2004
@crawdaddy2004 Месяц назад
Not sure how Wayfarer’s Bauble or Dowsing Dagger would be considered “fast mana.” Generally people use “fast mana” to refer to mana rocks that enter untapped and immediately tap for more mana than was spent to cast it: Moxen, Grim Monolith, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, etc. *** Are your statements connected? I’m confused.

I think its grixis propaganda that green is the strongest color in commander. The stats show that Richard and Crim who played 37% and 33% green decks respectively won the most and Phil who played the most green at 72% lost the most by far. Green, by itself, is so good at looking scary that it eats wraths and then falls apart. Related to the above point, It would be cool to see the colors in relation to the wins and see what pairings or colors are winning in the group.

Crim: You see every season we do this stats episode and I tell you we can’t let Richard keep getting away with it. Then look what keeps happening! Also Crim: Ok yea Phil never wins, but he would be number 1 if I didn’t hate him out every game!

i loved to see the wrath per deck as many years ago i was playing mono green snake aggro and at the table someone was playing orzhov which had 26 wraths in the deck... i still won with my infinite snakes but it was painful XD

Random podcast topic: Now that you're playing with paper cards are there any that you play you wouldn't have online and vice versa

I think using Scryfall's Tagger system to consider cards would help Crim's case. Scryfall/Moxfield searching for: "otag:removal-creature-sacrifice or otag:removal-creature" would be helpful. I think showing a ratio of card types would be interesting as well. Like how much lean towards planeswalkers/battles/enchantments/artifacts. I could also see having an early slide about not including complete outlier decks of "Only lands" or "Lost in the Woods". Maybe list out the categories of outlier decks.

Agree with Richard on the amount of times you should be casting your commander. I always wait until everyone has fired their removal or I have protection up.

For measuring the amount of ramp, you could choose a fixed turn to check the mana you can generate. For example, turn 6. If you can generate 10 mana at turn 6 you are doing great and probably won't need much more. But if you get to 10 at turn 10, your current measure is not showing ramp, just mostly land drops.

in relation to the amulet of vigor convo, i've found by playing spelunking that it absolutely super charges your other land ramp by making it all come in untapped. the high of open the way x=4 with spelunking out is unmatched
@chips8623
@chips8623 Месяц назад
ramp score is kinda a poor metric in this case. early ramp is the best ramp, because you get to spend that one extra mana that many more turns. It's probably not worth the trouble it would take to figure out how much mana each player generated over the course of the game, but *that* would be a much more interesting number.
