Can I say, this is an all too rare instance where a climate advocate has moved the public engagement messaging away from 'doing something' (perhaps not achieving much, but feeling good at having "done something"), and toward 'achieving something meaningful'. Well done. I might add to what Fatima mentioned about there being a place for everyone in the movement - especially for those who aren't activists marching in the street. Influencing your workplace to take account of environmental impact/consider and plan for how climate change will affect the business over the next 20 years as part of its strategic risk management, is going to be important to push businesses to do more. As individuals, building community support (influencing people you interact with) is important to pushing this as a priority for voters (and pushing Government to take more aggressive action).

It’s a bit more complicated than that. Demand and supply are both important. Although it must be said, that it isn’t easy for consumers to choose the sustainable product in may cases. And, that the idea of a personal carbon footprint was “created” by the fossil fuel industry. “Our Changing Climate” has a good video about this.
@edeverest2882
@edeverest2882 3 года назад
@@LeanAndMean44 Thanks for commenting :-) I've been aware for a long time that carbon footprint was originally "invented" by fossil fuel companies to deliberately mislead the general public, and that matter should be pursued in courts of law if it hasn't been already. But "carbon footprint" has proved to be such a good concept in many positive ways, that it's well and truly become part of the easy to understand vernacular or commonly used language relating to climate change. All of us really do have carbon footprints and its a very common topic for appropriate discussion on the internet.

So I live in Poland. And I can tell, that individual action may change some friends, maybe a few % of citizens, but whole point of acting eco in my house, job, whatever - it’s naive. It really is. Unless there are some critical systemic changes, laws and restrictions, other individual actions only scores for our concience, and not for climate. People’d be more glad to see steps how to change the point of view of our government, with possible outcomes of those changes (good, bad, financial, societal, psychological), which papers present them and how; than simple „turn the light off”.

"Reverse climate change" is impossible, at this point, sorry. Even a best case scenario would leave scars. As for plant based food, I'm all in, but many environments can't rely only on plant based foods, sustainably or without the help of government entities (which haven't been up to the task, so far). What I'm trying to say is that today, those that can should, but I would argue most don't live in food security and can't. We must always also fight for food safety for all, if we want to fight for better agriculture and food practices. ✌

@@mako1181 Thanks for your comment Mako ⭐️ Actually, there is strong evidence to suggest that a shift to a plant based food system could actually reverse climate change to some extent. I will share one study with you here: ‘The carbon opportunity cost of animal-sourced food production on land’- Nature Sustainability Food safety is such an important issue, yes. One important way we can achieve this is through a plant based food system. Currently, higher income nations steal food from poorer countries to feed to animals and then eat those animals and their secretions. This takes up a huge amount of agricultural land and discriminates against those most vulnerable in society, humans and animals alike. Most people can actually switch to a plant based diet, especially in high income nations. Nations labelled as ‘developing’ also have a lot more availability of this than is led to believe. However, there are groups and places where this is not possible as of now. Therefore, I think the people who are privileged enough to choose what and who they eat should make the right choice, so that others who don’t have this choice will one day have it too

Make sure everyone can afford their basic needs, socialize industries (this does not necessarily mean nationalizing them, but also think of worker councils, worker self-directed enterprises etc.) new municipalist actions like participatory budgeting in local government, undermine the most polluting corporations constantly through protest, strikes, court cases, taxation, boycotting etc. Also build mutual aid networks so you have to rely less on companies and get quick local mobilization during crises. Some instability and uncertainty is always unavoidable though, so make sure you prepare yourself mentally and practically to experience some level of discomfort.

Here's the problem: I agree we should switch to Green energy sources, but lets stop trying to convince people that we can stop the damage. We can't. China, Russia, and India will continue until the last drop. The damage is inevitable. What we should focus on is being ready for when there is no fuel left, and also to protect our country from rising sea levels and freak weather conditions. I will also say that traveling by train is a good alternative, within a nation, if they bring the prices down. It's not an option for international travel though, and that is something that no one is willing to give up. Not only do I want to continue going to places like Japan and Australia, I want to do so affordably. We also know that historically a lot of wars have happened because countries have not engaged with one another, and hate the people they can't see or speak too. Cheap international travel to all has broken down those stigmas and barriers.

@Healitnow
@Healitnow 2 года назад
With disasters everywhere we must act now to reduce global warming. Here are some suggestions. 1. Start using soda fountains where you get your personal reusable bottle filled, then ban sodas, juices, and water in plastic bottles. This technology alone would save possibly billions of tons in waste and is already used all over. 2. Go back to using wax paper for wrapping sandwiches as this will eventually go back to nature. Ban plastic sandwich bags. 3. Grocery stores should only be allowed to offer cloth, or back to nature plastic bags for customers that forget their own. 4. Solar, wind, and water based electrical power generation should all be developed before any other less Eco friendly sources would be allowed. 5. Now buildings can be built at any level without using wood, we should convert all housing and other construction to these products, and stop cutting down trees. 6. We must start buying electric vehicles from bikes to cars, pickups, and SUV's. Also get solar panels on your vehicle. Even if it only gets you a few miles per day it all adds up to that much less pollution from coal and nuclear power generation stations. 7. All maritime vessels should be fully equipped with solar panels and/or bladeless turbines that would help supplement or replace the power used from diesel generators. If a large vessel becomes totally free of polluting fuels great, but in the meantime any percentage we can reduce should be done. Now also use wind power including the use of a big free floating large air sail, and maybe regular masts and sails. Now use these to reduce even the electricity needed, making solar and wind recharging more likely without diesel. 8. With solar, water, and wind generated power getting cheaper, and with batteries now available with much better storage capacities, and at much cheaper prices than before, we must all convert our homes and shops. This will stop massive amounts of coal and nuclear pollution along with the diesel used to mine and transport it. 9. Build huge skyscraper style buildings all over for farming only, and then convert much of the agriculture into aquaponics, and hydroponics, then grow food products on all floors. This would allow multiple crops to be grown in the same buildings year round. These buildings will have a 24/7/365 regulated indoor climate creating way more food yield per area of land, per year. Conversion to this new way of growing should one day replace most land use for food production, then we can let some areas go back to nature. This is more than is possible with todays natural growth, due to seasonal considerations and the fact the earth has only has one floor to grow on. Since available area for agriculture is almost used up, we must make more some how, and upward or underground are the only two ways I can think of. 10. This is very important. WE MUST immediately set a population cap on earth and start imposing a one child law on all areas over that amount of density. In short the biggest threat to our existence is the massive consumption of resources to support us all. We need a one child law world wide, that is automatic once this density is reached. It must be enforced. 11. We all must vote Green world wide before it is too late. Look around and see all the weather getting ever more erratic as we continue to pollute. In a very few years it will be too late. Voting Green now is something we all can do at every level, in every election, in every part of the world. This will make a difference, as it will not only get concerned people in elected positions, but will scare politicians from other parties into getting greener in order to stay elected. Above all please remember this, a mass shift in voting is one thing that will get much attention in political circles.

Time, is the problem : as you say changing the system requires a change in who is in charge, which for a lot of the world requires elections - so that's 4 years for the UK and the US as an example - so that's 1/2 the time we supposedly have left gone. And you then need enough candidates elected that have enough of a majority to actually force change. As for both the UK and the US the 'green agenda' is seen as further to the left than the left - then in all honesty, you got no chance. So best case is like the progressives in the US at the moment, a few at every election, so give it 10-20 years and the movement will have enough political power to actually do something. Energy is the basis of the economy - your asking for a change of control to that basis - from the few (whether that be oil companies or countries) to the many (distributed interconnected power). As an example of the problem (within the current economic model) - I heard electric cars could be used as 'batteries' to even out supply - so as you are supplying electricity to the grid you get payed - then later you need to recharge what was taken - you pay for that. There obviously cant be any profit in either of those situations. And this applies to the generation as well - you can sell or store your surplus, but you wont sell if it is at a loss. And - what replaces the tax income currently gained from fossil fuels (especially petrol). The change required is equivalent to the agricultural revolution, the industrial revolution, and the tech revolution all rolled into one and enacted within a decade or two (at most). That's a big ask from a global population that is still enthralled by tribal politics and the personal accumulation of status though the application of wealth.

It's because some where between 1.5 and 2 was known to be the tipping point for the arctic - then there is no 2,3,4 - it just keeps going to somewhere around 5-15 (depending on how far forward you go) Unfortunately no one predicted the amount of unequal heating - the arctic is all ready at 4-6. Also the time scale is shortening, the models we used gave us till 2100, but now its looking more like 2050 for those predictions. So, Bangladesh as an example. 30-50 years and it no longer exists (already set in stone, nothing we can do to change it now) - where do 160 million people go?, what do you replace the rice (in the top 5 of world producers), potatoes (top 10), jute (top 5) with ? And that's just 1 small country.

@@jonovens7974 Are you trying to be annoying? I brought up urban planners in regards to the comment about transportation; one single part of one single system. Do I think they have the solutions to all the problems? No, I'm not an idiot, even though you try and make me sound like one. Sorry I interacted with you, that was my mistake. ✌

Lol, they are out of touch, corporate environmentalists. Why should people listen to someone who didn’t care about the pandemic and only does it to make themselves look good. Good thing people are starting to realise this.

Inaccuracy in the end segment. It's not eating more plants relative to your meat intake that makes the big dietary impact, it's the way in which those plants or animals are raised. Carbon-sequestering techniques are a key component of the future, after all.

Mostly dangerous drivel. Globally the ACE index (accumulated cyclone energy) 1980-2021 shows no increasing trend. Global Hurricane Landfalls 1970-2021 (updated from Weinkle et al, 2012) shows no trend. Satellite data since 1980 shows a slight downward global trend for total hurricaine numbers with 2021 being a record low year. The IPCC reports in AR6, chapter 11, "The total global frequency of TC [tropical cyclone] formation will decrease or remain unchanged with increasing global warming (medium confidence)." Multidecadal variability in Atlantic hurricaines is most probably related to the AMO (Vecchi et al, 2021). NOAA data 1851-2021 shows no trend in number of hurricaine landfalls with the record high being 1886. What the data from NOAA SPC shows about tornados: EF1-EF5 (1954-2022) no trend; EF3-EF5 (most destructive) (1954-2022) 50% decline. No EF5s in US since 2013 (a record absence). The Global Land Precipitation Anomaly from AR5 will disappoint with deviations from the average increasing by 0.2% per decade, but if you look at the actual data, it's just very variable over the decades. Drought appears to be decreasing (Watts et al, 2018) measured by SPI 1901-2017. Deaths from natural disasters are about 0.6% of what they were a century ago. What else? Oh, deserts like the Sahara have shrunk considerably and the Earth has greened by 15% or more in a human lifetime (NASA). On extinction the rate is very low: 900 known lost species for 2.1 million known species in 500 years. At that frequency it will take nearly 190,000 years to reach 15% extinction i.e. a mass extinction. There is no climate crisis. This video is anti-humanist.

If climate change is so apocalyptic why is everybody still having children? Maybe start solving climate change by not having babies. Then we can stop bulldozing every forest and jungle to make room for them all.

We cant do anything while under capitalism. You say "system change", but seem afraid to say the word "capitalism". Lets be clear, everyone needs to stop saying "system change" and openly tell it like it is! We are never going to change the situation we are in, without getting rid of capitalism.

Get rid of capitalism and you will give humanity a death sentence. The entire Western world embraces capitalism. It has the safest, healthiest most prosperous societies the planet has ever seen. Maybe try learning why this is.

@@nevadataylor *"Did you not watch the lecture regarding the research conducted by economists Tepper & Hearn??"* Nope, and I stand by my claim. *"If you dont have competition, you lose."* Who says there is no competition? Why do socialist constantly express this when they have no understanding of what capitalism even is, let alone how it works? *"Nothing less than a pipe dream my friend. Start dealing with reality."* Capitalism is a pipe dream? Where do live, Mars? *"Unsupported claim"* You have to be joking. You seriously have to be joking. There's enough data on this to make your head spin. The entire Western world says you're wrong. *"Even my capitalists friends would start putting you in your place at this point."* Your capitalist friends are anti capitalists? Line them up. I accept all challenges. Just curious, have you noticed the millions of people on a global migration? Which countries are they leaving and which countries are they always headed to? People vote with their feet. It's so strange, the Leftists that live in the West all hate capitalism, but the people who all live without it will do anything to obtain it. Have you ever spoken to someone who lived in Eastern Europe prior to 1989? Try it, it's eye opening. Please enlighten me on your ideas for a better economic system.
