I think the "we can stay friends" can also just be self-protecting. This is a person you shared so many deep vulnerable things with, maybe very private things and pictures... they don't want you angry at them and exposing them or using anything against them. Or, if they are trying to move on to someone new, they want you to like them so you don't make their chances with other people harder. If they show intention to "stay friends" it may just be because they are scared of what you'll do if you're enemies.
Thanks, that taught me something. There's the not right now and they come back later. And there's the not right now maybe in the next few months and they fade away. Maybe because it was too much working with two jobs, or because of the grass is greener syndrome. Or they just want to be friends and you're the only one initiating the friendship. They just respond to your comments and barely add to the conversation unless they feel like reaching out to help you with something or they enjoyed the sexual teasing, the idea of it at the moment. I'm gonna tell you straight up, if he truly cared for you then it wouldn't have mattered how you acted...short of cheating...during that time, he would have stuck by you and had your back. He would have let you push him away and held his ground for you. He would have known u were experiencing difficulty.
