The lower you set the "ideal levels" the more drugs you sell. The notion that the levels should be the same irrespective of age totally ignores hardening of the arteries that occurs in all people as they age. How about a study conducted and funded other than by a pharmaceutical company!

Being 79 with high BP, I am intereste in this topic. I was taking medications for BP and Cholesterol, but they all seemed to give me terrible side effects. Then I saw a RU-vid "60 Minutes" video about a Leisure World study of seniors and their health. They found that seniors with high blood pressure and cholesterol suffered less dementia. That makes me wonder if somehow the added blood pressure or cholesterol is good for the aging brain, or if the people who got dementia got it because it was a hidden side-effect of the pharmaceutical prescriptions? And the people who didn't take the meds actually fared better? Also, i wonder who funded the "SPRINT" study? If the funding came from someone who stands to gain monetarily from the results that were published, I'd be suspicious.

When my father got a at home blood tester everything changed. I noticed that different situations change blood pressure. For me going to a doctor was like going to an execution. My blood pressure would shift from 102/64 at home to 180/90 at the doctors. This really needs to be made public. One smart place for testing blood pressure is the Osteopathic Doctors. They had a race here in Tulsa and would do a persons blood pressure before and after a 8k race. Having the realization that stress affects blood pressure is something to remember in spite of what the doctor tells you at the doctors office. Get your own blood pressure tester.

My doctor was going to give me stronger medication if my blood pressure remained 194/9. So I went home and figured what had changed in my life. Our bodies are intelligent adapters especially to stress. I had no worries but I had developed a habit of drinking multiple cups of instant coffee during the day. So I’m cut out the caffeine and switched to decaffeinated coffee and tea infusions. My blood pressure returned to 120/80 by the next weeks trip to the Doctor. Please look at what you’re eating, drinking, and what stress you could remove from your life before accepting stronger medication!

It happens that after my 2nd child came to life, my doctor gave me a medication that gave me a Quink oedema, I became BLACK (I was in front of my mirror). My husband saw me, put my head under a tap with cold water, knocked my cheeks, and did what he could... Someone told me : it wasn't your hour... I could have left my husband with 2 kids, 6 and 18 months. When I came back to the doctor, she only said : well, we are going to give you an other medication... I won't ever forget her calm. I worked on the emergency rescue team at the Canadian mine where I was employed. The rule of thumb was to take a person's age and add 100 to the systolic reading . So if you were 60 years old you're high normal systolic blood pressure would have been 160 over 80 to 90. That was back in 1996. Suddenly out of nowhere the recommendation was 130 over 90. And a few years later they dropped it to 120 / 80 for everybody regardless of whether you were a trained athlete or a 70-year-old computer geek. Greedy pharmaceuticals!

The American Heart Association is wholly funded by industry players. The new guidelines are in place to sell more blood pressure medications and keep more people on them longer/forever. The American Academy of Family Physicians even refuted the AHA and upheld that 140/90 should stay as the line for medication. The Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation adopted the AHA's overly strict guidelines, as I'm sure other foreign countries have as industry lobbying goes a long, long way. I have to choose to go off my blood pressure meds on my own if I want to get off them. My doctor has already told be she wants to see my blood pressure at 115/75, which I find ridiculous.

I always had high blood pressure. Typically 140-70 or more (diastolic never went over 80). I was early 40s when I first became aware of my high BP but i was never on medication, i was otherwise healthy, good diet, blood sugar in normal range, exercised a lot (at least 1/2 hr of swimming or cycling or running daily, sometimes all 3 in a day as well as doing calisthenics and outdoorish hobbies like Mountaineering in summer and cross country skiing in winter) . I am 73 now and still basically the same in terms of BP, BS, still exercise a lot, 15% body fat (You can see what I look like on my RU-vid channel alainsarries) and still no medication of any kind. How many people can say that at 73 yo? So what is my point, my point is that despite having High BP, I have always been a healthy individual. People and doctors panic over PB over 140, but one should remember that doing intense exercise BP might go up to 200 for systolic so in this context 140 is not a disaster with danger of imminent death, your body will tolerate a much higher BP at least for a short while! . True, blood pressure guidelines are a useful tool for the general population but also true also is that we are all individuals and there are no guide lines that perfectly fit all .

Just because the consensus has always been that 120/80 is an 'ideal' blood pressure, it does not follow that anyone 65 or over, should have the same numbers. It's the natural age process where our system adjusts as we age. Therefore, having around 135/80, would be the new normal for older folks.

I love how they push these medications by telling us that something reduces our chance of a bad thing by 25 to 50%. Then, when you read the fine print, you see that they're talking about the relative risk/benefit. The absolute risk reduction might be from a 1.5% chance to a 1% chance. That is indeed a 33% reduction, but in terms of an individual person, it is meaningless. They sell a lot of pills though, and that's the important thing.

135/85 at your age is just great and giving one medication for that is a medical crime. Doctors get kick back money when they prescribe drugs and as such are very willing and happy to give pills and more pills. I would say a constant 155/90 may be of concern but not 135/85 as that is even below the famous 140/90. One has to be careful as to who is funding these studies.

I learned an interesting thing the other day. In Europe the "normal" range is up to 140/90, they call this "high normal". I remember just a few years ago they were trying to tell everyone in the US that if you are over 120/80 (from the previous 130/**) you need a perscription. They have many many fewer people on prescriptions overall and many of those countries have a higher life expectancy. In fact, the US is the most medicated country in the world, by far, but rank 44th in life expectancy. And we are ranked 1st in prescription medications and vaccinations. We also pay substantially more for the exact same drugs as other countries do.

@@inglbrute I don't live in the US and I'm not American. In the UK they work to 140/90 in the clinic or 135/85 with anbulatory monitoring. However, in the UK they also recognise that 'In this large-scale analysis of randomised trials, a 5 mm Hg reduction of systolic blood pressure reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events by about 10%, irrespective of previous diagnoses of cardiovascular disease, and even at normal or high-normal blood pressure values. These findings suggest that a fixed degree of pharmacological blood pressure lowering is similarly effective for primary and secondary prevention of major cardiovascular disease, even at blood pressure levels currently not considered for treatment.' There is therefore evidence that going lower than 140/90 provides benefits. Simply assuming it's Big Pharma plot without even bothering to look at the evidence behind such recommendations isn't prudent.

@@tomgoff7887 I know, everyone that says anything against the establishment is always concidered a conspriracist, and I've done a lot of reading over the last few years so I'm not totally ignorant of facts. But I'll just leave you with a couple of examples for what I just said. About 10 years ago I was having a standard checkup. Blood work and such. My BP was 122/78. The doctor said "You're blood pressure is great but I would recommend that you start taking this blood pressure medicine anyway, just as a precaution for the future." Do you really condone that? You don't think that's fishy? Check into how many prescription drugs Americans consume every year as compared to any other country in the world. If it were all true, we should be living to 90+ on average instead of around 73 for men and 78 or something for women. And second, take a quick look into how much money Phizer has given to the US government over the last 4 years alone, and who in the government has cashed those checks. Also look at some of the laws that have been passed favoring companies like this, and special contracts that Phizer and other companies now have with different governments, like UK, Brazil, US, etc. Including NDAs and exclusivity contracts. Don't dismiss it all as conspiracy until you have made sure.

@@inglbrute Big Pharma is in it for the money, sure. But in other countries with more rational health systems, Governments either buy or subsidise consumers' purchase of these drugs. They always look hard at value for money before they purchase these drugs or put them on the approved list for puchase by patients. Also, it's a bit of a stretch to assume that every doctor you see is prescribing this or that simply because he/she gets a kickback. The fact is there is pretty good evidence that lowering BP below 'normal' levels reduces the rate of heart attacks and strokes. There is a very recent article on the American College of Cardiology website which discussed the difference between European and US treatment thresholds, and provides references to follow up. As for US mortality stats,, yes you have a health system that overservices patients but you also have a big obesity problem, a big junk food problem and a big illegal drug problem. I wouldn't dismiss new blood pressure targets as Big Pharma cons until I'd looked at the research underpinning them. Have you looked at the report of the US taskforce, that set out the reasons for the recommended levels?

3 years ago my doctor told me 'welcome to the diabetics club'. The way he said it in delightful tone shook me more than the news. He started talking about eliminating fried fatty foods, taking medicines and eventually injections, which freaked me out even more. I shared these bad news with my family and one of my sons suggested I start a keto diet which doesn't eliminate fatty foods but encourages going easy on carbs. I didn't like the restrictive nature of this diet but took on a low carb diet and in first 6 months lost 6 kg and started to lower my blood sugar level. During that time I worked out the foods and drinks that worked for me. When I started the diet, I was about 95 kg. In one year after starting this diet I went down to 82kg. For the last 12 months I am hovering around 80kg. I eat like a horse with lots of meat, vegetables, all dairy products, nuts, certain fruit, low carb beer and spirits, and home made lemonade(water with lemon slices) and of course very low carb bread you can buy at any supermarket today. My blood sugar level has been between 4.5 and 6.2 depending on the time of day and when I ate last. Not only that, all my blood test results are within normal range and I have lots more energy and don't get tired easily. My doctor should be congratulating me but seems very quiet when reading out my blood test results. I hope this is of some help to those with high blood sugar levels. The best medication for older people is........walking! Do not go mad about this - steaming up the road in shorts and vest, trying to get from A to B fast. Moderate walking overall, maybe aim for a mile a day the first week or two, then two mile and so on. You may wish, during the walk, to speed up a little (100 yds or so) then slow down etc. If you walk through your door, after exercise, completely `knocked out` that is wrong! Pull back on the distance until you get it right. If you only amble outdoors for ten mins per day for the rest of your life you will be `gifting your body` with all round health.

And I was overweight at 98.6 kg! My doctor said to lose weight so I did by eating much more vegetables and by exercising - mostly walking up hills if I could find them. Over 1 year my weight came down to 73.6 Kg and my blood pressure came down to 100 so my medication was heavily reduced. Oh yes and I had to buy two new pairs of smaller waist jeans and buy shorter belts. That was 2 years ago. I average 76.5 kg now and my systolic averages 115. So medication is not the only option to reduce blood pressure....far from it! I used the book FAST 800 as a guide.

I tried this on him and got him down to 7 , it was fine at first then started to gave serious complications. The low readings even though no in hypo range were having adverse effects. I argued wiv nurses bout this . Now they agree his higher readings are more normal for HIM. He is still fit as can be also got stoma due to cancer. What is it with America and it's "addiction" to blood pressure readings in groups of adults according to age? That is very old school from years ago. Naturally there are guidelines for what blood pressure should be for various medical conditions. but for a generally healthy adult, things have changed and age is no longer considered a factor with normal adult blood pressure. The range is the same for all adult ages, and can vary considerably. (just like sinus tachycardia is only considered as such when a persons pulse rate is over 100. Under 100 is now considered satisfactory). And not all people have "hardening of the arteries" as they age. Ask any cardiologist. And make sure they are not affiliated with any drug companies.

For those who have never been on BP meds, the lower the better: longevity increases with lower pressure with no bottom limit. For those who had high pressure and are on treatment, excessive lowering can precipitate a stroke or a heart attack because their arteries are no longer normal.

Isn't it funny how being labeled as being hypertensive actually makes you hypertensive. I think a lot of this is a huge cash grab by the pharmaceutical companies. I'm 60 years old and living with high blood pressure. I'm in great shape and I'm not too worried about it. I am on a 5 mg dose of medication in the winter when it's cold. A lot of times I don't take my pills in the summer when it's hot. Stay fit and eat healthy. And stop worrying about your blood pressure!

I struggle to understand why so many RU-vid channels insist on hardcoding subtitles? I find them so invasive, & so unnecessary, because if I need them I can simply switch them on, using the player settings' button.

re - "The main findings showed that among 9361 patients, those treated to a SBP target of less than 120 mm Hg had a significantly lower rate of the primary composite outcome than those treated to a SBP target of less than 140 mm Hg (1.65% vs 2.19% per year, respectively..." a mere difference of 0.54% Absolute Risk! Forbes website - ""The study was actually halted early, and encouraging results announced in September, 2015 due to a 30% relative risk reduction in cardiovascular events, (heart attack, heart failure and strokes), along with a 25% relative risk reduction in death when systolic blood pressure was reduced to less than 120 mm Hg, compared with less than 140 mm Hg."

So, I would say it was more or less a BS report.

Im over 70. My old doctor gives hbp medication and ask me to check everyday plus exercising no alcohol no fat meat. Lot veggies. If the reading is over 140 then I have to take it. However he prescribes everyday walk, no alcohol, no cigarettes, limiting meat. Recommends singing dancing laughing. A good social interactions, praying mediting. A lot of things to do before you take medication. Another doctor told me he has hbp as well. So cures himself with vit c d coq10 Oliver capsules and practises chi gong Every day. Pharmacists don't like my 2 doctors😅 althoug both are trained medical doctors from Paris.

I ALWAYS have high blood pressure when I see a nurse or a doctor. At home, it's below 130/80 anyway.

Me 2--- go to the dr. and my pressure is ~190/90....go home and its like yours. Been going to the same dr. for yrs yet each time they freak out but I tell them...I'm still here at 77 same BP when I was 47. I'll just go home and drink some beers after all these years.

No worries. Many people have this what is called white coat hypertension. Your self-monitored bp readings at home is the real thing.
