Discussing what I have found to be a common reason for oil bath axle seals to leak oil, especially after just installing a new axle seal.

Thank you. This wasn't mine issue but I bet I'll run into it Funny you mention end play cause manufactures show charts with end play to preload and wear curve is best like you said tighter almost end-to-end area, yet they recommended looser. Never made sense to me.

You are correct. To much end play also leads to tire wear on inside edge of tire. Checking hub nut torque is a maintenance item in my opinion. Most folks don't touch them until the seal leaks. New style conmet preset hubs have a spacer between the bearings. You simply torque hub nut to their specifications and it sets the bearing. Easy as can be.

Haven't messed with the newer ones like you're talking about, but I know that a lot of people snug the nut slightly and then back it off a bit and results in way to much end play and a leaking seal shortly if not immediately.

If there is a spacer in between the bearings, like on most modern trucks nowadays, you torque it to specifications and do not back off the nut. There are some RU-vidrs who have made the mistake of backing off the nut to later report they had leaking problems. Also, the torque spec is determined by the type of nut used at least on Freightliner trucks and according to their manual. There are about 4 (common) nuts used on modern Freightliner Cascadias.

Good explanation you also need to check the spindel for wear if it has a groove worn on it thats more common on light vehicles you might need a speedy sleeve also check to make sure there is not one on it already

You are correct, I've used the speedy sleeves before, but that's usually on light duty trucks as you said. The heavy duty trucks and trailers use a seal that turns inside itself so spindle wear is not a problem unless the bearings have went out and ruined it that way. I'm not sure if they still make them where the seal rides directly on the spindle any more. I haven't seen one in a long time.

I think it's a mistake a lot of people make thinking the bearings should be loose like an old boat trailer hub with an 1/8" slack in it. An oil bath axle end doesn't work to well like that.

Hey Chase, great name. I recently replaced my wheel seal and its started leaking again, this time ruining my brake shoes. When I set it up I torqued the inner nut to 130ftlbs then backed it off just slightly (maybe 1/8 - 1/4 turn) then torqued the outer nut down to 100ftlbs. The seal looks to be in good condition. Any thoughts?

Could be a bad seal or damaged on install, it happens sometimes. I've had good luck with Stemco seals.
