Shows complete measurements and explains construction and set up of a CFT made from a 63 gallon (240 litre) wheelie bin.
Shows suitability of chosen bar spacing VS self harvesting for mixed/red worms - may not be appropriate for ANC.
(sorry for the long video, I had a lot to get through to do a good job)

I know its 5 years since this video but I recently discovered vermicomposting. I just finished my second cft wheelie bin. Thanks 😊

the worms could hang out by roots over other areas as they a would have a higher percentage of bacteria by the roots, great design, we need another one and are going to make this one as it looks like the best design ive seen, thank you for sharing

Hi Brian. I have just completed a worm bin out of a 240 litre bin the same as yours. I have just glued some aluminium flyscreen insect mesh to the inside of the four breathing holes at the top. I used liquid nails as the glue and wondered what you used to glue your mesh to the bin. Thanks for the all the info in your clip.

Mathew - gee, Im sorry I never saw this message before :( No, it shouldnt matter to the operation of the farm. Thanks for asking Regards Brian

This looks like a great design, would you add to this or modify now that you have had experience with it ? Is there much issue with water draining out or worm wee ? I have a bin i want to convert for home use worming. I was thinking about fabricating steel grid on the bottom . Would you still use the spacing you used here ?

No - its a good design, better than commercially available plastic bins for sure. Go grab my free cft guide from the website ;) You shouldnt get leachate in a well run bin - a better liquid solution is aerated castings tea Info page: www.thewormman.com.au/act

Great gear thanks for putting out there. My apartment temperature is often close to 90f July and August is that too hot for the worms? I read they like 65f Our community garden in the Bronx NY have rats for sure do you think having a bin outside will increase the problem? Thanks Mate

Hi Theo It would be close to being too hot, as the food breaking down adds heat. Best system to try would be a fabric bag CFT as they have great air flow and allow for more mistakes like overfeeding in summer. See my review here thewormman.com.au/urban-worm-bag/

Hi Theo, sorry just saw the rat question. Depending what you feed into the farm, yes it could attract rodents. You CAN put a vermin proof door on the bottom and vermin proof the air vents. That could help a lot. Thanks for watching. regards Brian

Brian, When you say 3 inch spacing between the conduit bars at the bottom, is that 3 inch from each center point of the the conduit, or 3 inch from the closest side of the conduit to the closest side of the next conduit? Thanks, Mate.

Hi Indra - i think i answered this one in farcebook - but 3 inch centres :)

Hi Brian! Salute from Brazill your vídeos are awsome! Thanks for sharing your experience. I raise African Night Crawlers in a worm bin. I like d the CFT system that you showed. Can ANC be leptospirose in a CFT container? I hope so. Regards

Its said ANC cast is too "sandy" for a cft, but im not sold on that excuse. I created a beast just for anc but the stock got compromised by reds and blues so I gave it up. If you try it, let me know how it goes :) Thanks for watching :)

with the open gap in the bottom do you have any problems with rodents? I have just purchased an identical bin and wondering if I should install a fly wire screen or similar?
@BrianTheWormMan1
@BrianTheWormMan1 7 лет назад
Igbran - I don't personally have a problem, but you could have if you HAVE rodents around. You could build a mesh door for the opening quite easily though to enclose it - just make sure its mesh so that you get air flow through it. Thanks for watching

does the soil you harvest just fall between the gaps in the conduit
@BrianTheWormMan1
@BrianTheWormMan1 8 лет назад
+Oliver Page Yes it often slightly falls thru itself - else you scrape between the bars with a little rake etc to encourage some out. Thanks for watching :)
@matthewyoung1973

also, do you close the door at the bottom?
@BrianTheWormMan1
@BrianTheWormMan1 8 лет назад
+Matthew Young hi there when you say the bottom is missing, presume you mean the "floor".....so no I don't think that's going to be an issue to the worms as such, apart from (as you said) possibly compromising the strength of the unit - maybe you could reinforce the bottom with some pine studs and a piece of ply? No I don't have a door on the bottom of the wheelie - worst case theres toads in there - or god forbid a snake - so it may in fact be wise to make a simple door on them :) thanks for watching (& remember to subscribe :) )
