When "all" doesn't mean all

It's great that "all are welcome" in your company, church, or organization. But what if the reality doesn't match the intent?

I appreciate your videos. As the parent of a trans daughter, I have experienced this at a church we attended for a short time. They claimed to be welcoming, loving, not rejecting us, but they needed me to understand that they have "policies.". They would not use her preferred name or pronouns and wouldn't put her name on a prayer request list. Church folks couldn't come to our house if she was there because they had to "protect" people. This was beyond hurtful. I'm so thankful that we found a church of truly welcoming people.

This work so well for ableist too For everyday life...as for church I just avoid it. Between being over-praised for breathing despite my disability and low-key demonised because I'm queer I prefer experiencing my faith at home

Spot on as usual. I wish more places wouldn't immediately get so defensive and feel like they are being accused jut because someone points out an area for improvement.

As parents of a special needs child, my wife and I have been unable to find a church to attend for years. They all act welcoming, but the best they can do is put us in the nursing mother's room to isolate us until the service is over. Needless to say, we haven't been incorporated into any church communities either. At least we have Veggie Tales.

As a left-handed man, I’ve been experiencing this kind of discrimination so regularly that I’m used to it 😂

OMG, when you were listing work sitcoms I was like, I need to tell him to check out Better Off Ted. Rewatched recently, still brilliant and ahead of its time!

So glad to see a new video. And an excellent reminder. Our church is in this process now, and so we have two (well qualified) LGBTQ members in our leadership studio.

Preach! Actions speak louder than words every. Single. Time. People like you and I aren't stupid, we notice when a church claims to love us but never does anything to help us, stand up for us to its own members or other Christians, or make any real efforts towards serious change in its own ideology or idk, listening to us when we say what'd *actually* make us feel welcome. If there were anything I could say to these churches who are Welcoming in Theory only...keep claiming you luuuurve The Gays all you want, and your heart HURTS for us. But if you actually care about us or want us to listen? You can't claim to love people while turning around and donating to organizations and politicians that try to take away our rights, fund "therapies" that only destroy lives, and even lead to violence against us at home and abroad. And you especially don't get to then act like LGBT people often leaving the church in droves or having trust issues with Christians can be fixed by basically, a PR face-lift. (Also hi, soapbox over, I'm not really spiritually connected to any church anymore (this issue actually wasn't what did it for me tho it didn't help) but your videos are still comforting on some level. It gives me hope there could maybe be change in the place I grew up.)

There were soap dispensers and other things which had trouble discerning darker skin tones, and also facial detection Recognition algorithms that basically treated all asian people as the same... So yeah, that sitcom situation definitely could happen in real life

It's an interesting topic. I used to work with an eyetracking machine that used the contrast between the dark pupils and the light scleras to determine where the eye was and where it was looking. However, it could get confused. I had a young woman come in once and I could not get the machine to stay focused on her pupils because it kept getting "confused" by her dark eyeliner. We were warned that the same thing could happen with darker skin, but I'm glad that I was never in the situation where I was unable to get the machine to work for a person because of their skin color.
