When Bill Frawley (Fred Mertz) confronted Desi Arnaz & Lucille Ball!!! I Love Lucy!
William or Bill Frawley, as he was known by those close to him, was very much like Fred Mertz in real life. I will tell you about the time he got extremely upset behind the scenes of I Love Lucy. He not only confronted Lucille Ball but Desi Arnaz as well. He was very unhappy. Did they patch things up? I'll tell you!

To little credit has been given to Vivian Vance and Bill Frawley in regards to the I Love Lucy show. Glad to hear you expounding on some of that.

Lucy chased the fame of this show till the end and I believe the magic was really in William and Vivian playing off the insanity that is Lucille Ball. They really balanced each other out. Without this balance, she wasn't as entertaining. It was too much.

Frawley and Vivian vance despised each other. years later Vivian vance went into a restaurant and somebody playfully called out, "Hi, ethel, where's fred?" and she replied, "dead, thank god." I think they got off on the wrong foot because she tried to coach Frawley on a dance number and he had been in show biz longer than her. when she got a script she would first look through it to see if she had to kiss him. actually, desi arnaz knew they didn't like each other and thought that would make their zingers at each other more believable and funny because of the genuine dislike behind it. this show was a beloved part of my childhood and I read a lot about it later. once I was with my little boy in a restaurant and he asked me what Ethel's maiden name was and several people at nearby tables instantly joined the discussion. I was in awe of the show's continuing popularity. it's like the music of the beatles, a precious cultural artifact passed from by one generation to the next.

What started the feud between Vance and Frawley was Vivian complained that she was coupled with an old man. When Frawley heard what she said, that was it - they never liked each other. When Vance heard that Frawley had died, she was in a restaurant and called out, "Champagne for everyone." After working so closely with someone for over 5 years - what a heartless thing to say! Also, since he was hired first, why did she take the part since she knew his age at the time?! While the 4 cast members were gold together in the show - I don't think either of them would have been remembered today if it were not for their roles in ILL.

Hey Rick, I'd no idea that you were having trouble with videos on You Tube. I was wondering why I had not seen any of your live podcasts, never thinking that it could be because of RU-vid's strange new guidelines as to what they would show on their website. If there is anything we can do to help, just let us know. As far as the quartet of unbelievably talented individuals in "I Love Lucy" is concerned, none of them EVER tried to upstage the other. They never stepped on each others (punch)lines, and were happy to take on a supporting role when one of the other three stars was to have the spotlight on them during that particular episode. This a rarity. And they were the best cast of characters ever assembled. Can you imagine anyone else playing any of the four roles? No way!. I loved Bea Benaderet when I saw her in reruns of "Petticoat Junction", but Bea always came across as so naturally sweet and kind and I never thought that she could replicate the "brassiness" and deadpan one-liners of Vivian Vance as Ethel was able to say. Ethel would have been a totally different character had Bea gotten the role, and would not have been as interesting or multi-dimensional as Ethel Mertz. Ditto Gale Gordon as Fred. First and foremost was his voice. Frawley's voice was gruff and loud, as Fred's voice should have been. Gordon had a refined accent that was more suited to the other three Lucy series that he co--starred in, "The Lucy Show", "Here's Lucy", and "Life with Lucy". The stars above aligned perfectly to create the perfect cast for the perfect show, a show that will live on eternally because it's comedy is literally timeless.

I feel though he should have made the remark to Lucy to her face concerning her one note instead of walking away and turning around and expressing how he felt about the performance of her one note. Oh, that was most DEFINITELY true, Willie & Vivian didn't like one another. When "I Love Lucy" ended in 1957, they were given the opportunity to star in their own spin-off series (would've most likely been titled "The Mertzes") but it was Vivian who did NOT want to do it. The two of them never had any kind of contact with one another ever again and ten years later, when Willie passed away, she reportedly toasted to his death, saying "Good Riddance". It was pretty bad btwn them off-camera

I never cared much for their numbers, though some were indeed funny. However, if such a great talent as Bill Frawley being asked to do a serious part of a comedy number, even he as an artist would want to make it perfect to not only show-off his talent but perhaps to also help accentuate Lucy's "sour note" and comedic part of the number. In short if everyone goofed up the song by accident or design it wouldn't have had the effect that it did.

Frawley had a nerve trying to be a prima donna. He was fortunate to have been cast as Fred Mertz in the first place. Lucy didn't want him: his reputation as a diehard drunkard was well-known, and she felt Frawley could be a serious liability to the show. When they finally decided to cast him, Desi took Frawley aside and warned him that, if his alcoholism ever caused a problem, even just being late one time, he would be fired. To his credit, Frawley took the warning to heart, and never allowed his offstage drinking to affect his onstage work. However, his precarious position vis-a-vis the show meant that any prima donna antics were unthinkable and should have been avoided. His antipathy toward Vivian Vance is well-known. It was supposedly based on a remark of hers which he overheard, but I doubt that his crusty irascibility would have endeared him to any actress who undertook the role of Ethel. He was lucky it was not Bea Benaderet, Lucy's friend and the actress for whom the role of Ethel was originally intended. Benaderet was an easygoing, kind woman, but she took no nonsense from anyone. Had she been cast as Ethel, Frawley would have been out on his ear the first time he disrespected her. He was a strong personality and a fine performer (Fred is my favorite character on the show), but his antics certainly made life difficult for the other performers in the cast.

I forget the author's name, but he actually interviewed alot of the people who were responsible for the SHOW being developed and what they contributed to its success!! Desi was firm with William Fraley but he truly cared about him as a person and a professional!

I thought the Barbershop Quartet number was great, I do wonder what it would have been like had Bill not intervened? This is yet another example of professionalism among the cast as they might squabble but in the end they came together & did what was best for the show! Bill Frawley & Fred Mertz were one in the same to me. Be Hopeful 🤗💜

Bill used to call Desi "Cuban"..........."Hey, Cuban!".............both world class drinkers, Desi warned Bill never to return to the set drunk after he did it once. He never did. Desi felt affection towards old bachelor Bill and visa versa, but Bill and Vivian absolutely hated each other and try to avoid each other between takes.

With that episode...Bill and Vivian sounded as the real professionals (as obvious by their experience), Ricky/Desi was the “Cuban trying to do vaudeville” (in itself comedic), and of course, Lucy comedically lousing it up. The combination worked!

This was a great show. But obviously Bill and Vivian weren’t Desi and Lucy... lol... Vaudeville and barbershop singing was not as popular as he thought. Lolol...He was an expert?? Desi was a musician and Cuban .. which if you didn’t know, have natural rhythm and flavor. He would never be able to dance a guaguanco, salsa or any of what Desi could dance. Bill should have known his place and just done what he was told because Desi had more musical talent than he did.

I’m not surprised that William Frawly went off about the barber shop scene. He seem like the kind of person to always complain about something. That’s why he played Fred Mertz do well. It came natural to him. Both are nasty mean people. Except Fred mertz couldn’t drink and bet on tv. William did that in real life. And William was very racist too.

I Love Lucy wouldn't have been without Fred and Ethel. Fred was just the right amount of grumpy Old Man while Ethel was the perfect foil to him and Lucy's cohort/partner in crime. This episode was really funny and everything Vaudeville harkened back to Fred. Ethel, being much younger was a stretch but she could sing Opera and play the piano. What made the scene great was at the end Lucy actually sings a line in tune!

Brand new great I Love Lucy gossip. I Love It! It seems unbelievable that after the beginning of ILL that Bill and Viv were still unknown. Now Bill had been a actor in many movies and was somewhat known but Viv was only a theater actress and completely unknown so after the show became famous early on I don't understand they should have also become famous. Now we know the behind the scenes hatred of Bill and Viv but why did Bill the SOB start on Viv and call her a galley cursey she didn't do anything and what does that mean.

Haha "Cuban Square" - meaning Cuban Cigar. A little know fact is the term "sguare" comes from the way they packed cigarettes and cigars back during the war. They packed them so tight and compact to fit in the MRE's that they looked square thus the term "Hey bub, lemme bum a square" so in this case Fred called Ricky a Cuban Cigar.

Frawley was a real pain, at least that was his reputation or it was something that followed him? He was also reported as a daily drinker, described by one of the cast of "My 3 son's" claimed that at lunchtime Frawley was usually having a liquid lunch and someone would have to go and try and get him to come back to the set to resume shooting( he was the original Uncle Charlie)

I always loved Fred on the show. However, I was very disappointed in recently learning how racist Bill Frawley was - also learned how extremely racist Jimmy Stewart was. The latter bowled me over. (Also, Stewart was alleged to have a very bad temper - even his wife concurred such.) Fred was a cranky type character; but Jimmy Stewart played the opposite of who he really was. Give me Frawley over Stewart any time. At least I'd known whom I was dealing with.

I love how you say, "I Love Lucy!" As for what I think of the barbershop number, I'm afraid to say, I think Bill was right. It sounded like they were doing it off the cuff. To begin with, instead of classic 4-part barbershop, it was only 3-part harmony, since Lucy only had her "one note." Vivian was too high, often an octave higher than Bill, so there wasn't actually much harmony at all. However, it was a comedic bit and fit the plot, where they were all trying to cover for Lucy. I still think it's a great bit. Bill was just being, well, Bill.

do not forget that William Frawley had a long career in films as a character actor to whit: William Frawley was born in Burlington, Iowa. As a boy he sang at St. Paul's Catholic Church and played at the Burlington Opera House. His first job was as a stenographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. He did vaudeville with his brother Paul, then joined pianist Franz Rath in an act they took to San Francisco in 1910. Four years later he formed a light comedy act with his new wife Edna Louise Broedt, "Frawley and Louise", touring the Orpheum and Keith circuits until they divorced in 1927. He next moved to Broadway and then, in 1932, to Hollywood with Paramount. By 1951, when he contacted Lucille Ball about a part in her TV show I Love Lucy (1951), he had performed in over 100 films. His Fred Mertz role lasted until the show ended in 1960, after which he did a five-year stint on My Three Sons (1960). Poor health forced his retirement. He collapsed of a heart attack on March 3, 1966, aged 79, walking along Hollywood Boulevard after seeing a movie. He is buried in San Fernando Mission Cemetery.

It's my understanding that Vivian Vance was in the Cole Porter musical, "Anything Goes" and was even the understudy for Ethel Merman. Her stage credits extended to Broadway, not just vaudeville. That might be something for you to look into and perhaps feature in a future episode. Thanks......

A very interesting behind the scenes insight, and from what I've read this sounds like a strong character trait of Bill. Although the Mertz team performed on the vaudeville stage in the I Love Lucy storyline, Vivian Vance had an established dramatic stage career by 1933 at the age of 21 while vaudeville was all but gone by then from American theaters. I beg to differ that Ms. Vance was a song and dance hoofer in that realm.

Honestly I only saw Bill Frawley as Fred Mertz, didn't know until I watched some of the movies he was in, that he did movies with John Wayne, and Abbott and Castello. You'd think that having been in movies with those 3 big namers, he would have become better known for more than just Fred Mertz or Bud (on My 3 sons).

He was just a supporting actor. He worked in movies, but he wasnt a star like Lucy, even though she was known as "Queen of the Bs" (the B pictures, not feature films.) But she also had a popular radio show, My Favorite Husband, and I Love Lucy was the spin-off. Vivian was known only for her stage work, but although Desi had a popular band, I think ne was mostly known at the time for being Lucille Ball's good-looking husband.

I've heard it said that Bill Frawley was notoriously hard to work with, but given his known problems with alcohol and such, Lucy and Desi still decided that's exactly the kind of person they needed for the Fred Mertz character. Also, not receiving subscription updates has been an ongoing problem with RU-vid _since 2013._ I can attest to this, because people have had the same problem with my channel since then: it stems from when RU-vid changed the homepage in 2013 to push trending and popular videos rather than our subscriptions.
