I gave up everything and moved to Germany. More than one in the family thought I was NUTS and each of them tried to change my mind. Some with head shaking, some with guilt, and some still don't speak to me to this day 10 years later. Some responded when I made the effort with calling but when I stopped, never heard from them again, etc... Some of them came around and finally accepted it. They miss me, but they know that this is what makes me happy. The ironic thing is that when I was in the US, they never really bothered with me, maybe a phone call, birthday parties, but we never "hung out" together. The minute I left it was "but what about ME". I feel just like you do. I have one life and if it is selfish to put myself in the driver's seat of that life, then so be it. EPILOG: They now call me brave and strive for their own dreams, so you are 100% correct, it was always about their issues and not about me at all. Being someone's Inspiration ... well, not a bad epilog at all and I can live with that. *smiles*

25 years ago I was a practicing lawyer. It was what was expected in my family if you weren't a doctor. I was married to a lovely man. Between the two of us we made lots of money. I was miserable. Then my husband left. Finally a I decided to do what *I* wanted to do, rather than what was expected of me. I quit my job and opened a Ballroom dance studio. I had NO money. We were underwater on the house, and without my income I had only limited child support. I had no assets, no one would lend me money. I built the studio on credit cards.It was a huge gamble, but I just stepped off the cliff. For 20 years I taught dance, and was finally happy. I had always dreamed of being a dance teacher, but it just wasn't done in my family.. it took a long time for my family to accept it, but they eventually did. I met my second husband, who was a nomad. For 15 years I lived in my apartment while he travelled and worked, and visited on weekends. Sometimes I would travel with him for short periods of time, but my life was stationary. 2 years ago I sold the studio and joined him on the road. I still teach occasionally, and I frequently miss my studio, but I love being a nomad. Follow your heart. Live your dream. Take the risk. Otherwise you'll reach old age with nothing but regrets. Once your family sees that your are happy, they will come around. Mine did. If not, screw em.

Carolyn, it’s not just women. Most men are too guarded to admit things. I’m 37, I had thyroid cancer and live back at home with my mom and dad while recovering. It’s been 4 years..... they don’t even like me going camping, they have panic attacks saying I’m gonna die. I’m moving to Texas to go to college for archaeology and they are losing their damn minds. Makes me feel like shit, but like you said “it’s your life”. Yeah it’s my life. I’m going. They are gonna be so pissed and upset. Oh well. That’s their decision if they wanna be pissed at me they can be pissed at me -Jay 37 year old male with not much support or encouragement

We support you! Your new life will still have mundane & weary aspects (vending machines still won't drop the item & parking meters can still run out early) but you will enter a new world, life, & frame of reference, & be better for it. Julia Cameron wrote "The Artist's Way"- saying " Leap & the net will appear." I'd add- " Or sprout wings & fly." Best wishes- you've got this!

Taking care of my disabled brother keeps me in bricks and sticks. I don't mind. I'd rather give him a home life than an institutional life. I had a wonderful year and a half living in my VW camper back in the day (1970s). If I can be nomadic again, I'd be overjoyed. If I don't get the opportunity, it's ok, because I had that opportinity. My mother, no longer with us, would have loved the life. We'd talked about doing it together at one point when she was still alive. And my other brother would love to do it, too. As a truck driver he gets to do the travel to some extent. So yea, I hope anyone who wants to try it should, regardless of what others say. Amen to what you said.

@nmmoore2920 5 лет назад
Thx for ideas. He doesn't need 24 hr care, just momitoring. So I can and do get away for short jaunts/day trips which are fun. It's just not the same as the nomadic life. Too difficult to take him, and he has no desire to go on the road, doesn't like camping, etc. He's a city boy, lol.
@voluntaryismistheanswer
@voluntaryismistheanswer 5 лет назад
I hope some day you can find a way to travel with him. Disabled people need this life more than most. Most city people just don't know better and need a chance to get in the groove. Remember, you are the Captain of the ship.

Could take him... but as said earlier, he has no desire to go. And, this isn't a major sacrifice. It's a joy to support him. If it's right for me to hit the trails again someday, so to speak, yay! If not, then I'm content that I had the opportunity before. What I can say, in particular for women, if you get the opportunity and want to do it, do it. Don't let being a woman stop you. Yes, you need to be wise, aware, take precautions, but we have to do that in our everyday lives, anyway. Carolyn has covered such topics very well. And don't let age stop you. Men and women, of all ages, partnered and single are doing it. Introverts and extroverts... it's a life that can suit a variety of personalities.

Thank you Rhonda. I needed to hear this today. I had several family members that made BIG PLANS about what they were going to do when they retired; they either had some other illness that prevented them from doing it or they passed away. I'm terrified that that is going to happen to me. I've also got BIG PLANS but I'm retiring soon and starting my RV life in spite of how my family feels about it. I choose freedom!

Pain is stopping me from living my dream. Unfortunately not much I can do about it. I've learned nothing is more important than your health! If you have good health...cherish it!
@DancEncounters
@DancEncounters 5 лет назад
I have lived with pain for years. I had a bad accident that nearly caused me to lose my foot and left me with permanent nerve damage in my left foot that hurts all the time, as well as sciatica; shoulder damage that was only partly corrected by surgery and left me with pain in both shoulders; plantar facietis; fibromyalgia; torn meniscus in both knees; migraine headaches. What I have learned is this: you cannot choose not to hurt. But you can choose not to suffer, and if you choose not to suffer, you can do almost anything you want,

Valerie from Oregon Judgmental aren't we? I can control some of the pain with diet and exercise, but not all. And I can just power through some of it as well. I have a very high pain threshold, but sometimes the pain is so bad I find myself in a fetal position, crying. I use pain killers under a doctor's supervision, as needed, and when I need them I thank God for them. Sometimes I go weeks o without needing them, but when the pain gets really bad, I use them without guilt. Thank God they still work. And since medical marijuana became legal, I don't need the opiates anywhere near as often. But I do need (and want)to work, and my job has some pretty heavy physical elements. So I do what is necessary, without listening to judgemental assholes like you who would rather I suffer for their stupid moral judgements.

I just recently moved from Boston, MA to Glendale, AZ and it was a battle for 6 months with my mom and was tearing the family apart. My brothers were supportive but she was downright mean about it but I could not let that change my mind. I am a good person and have been successful in my life so I will do what I want. I did it anyway as I usually do and when I just went back for a visit everything was fine, geesh after all that. I have always lived my life the way I wanted and do not let others overwhelm me by their negativity or change my decisions, I do listen to sound advice and weigh it out. I am also a safety girl so I always consider those things. I have traveled half the world most of it by myself and I do find that doing your research prior to making major decisions is most wise. But I am now 60 years old and have decided to live what years I have left doing what I want and getting to my bucket list. I salute you, freedom is what it is all about body and soul. I believe that some of our parents, or loved ones grew up in a different generation. They are acting toward that generation and they worry about if you will be safe in that open world. My mom was not thrilled at first when I told her I wanted to travel, but the more I talked about it the more she started to change her mind. I put my plans on hold for family medical issues and as a daughter felt I needed to stay put for awhile. I have a family member who will not step up to the plate and help, they are for themselves and I just can't desert this family member. So I am staying put until I can finally do what I want to do.

A lot of people are afraid to take that first step. What I recommend is baby steps. Even if you don't have an rv or van , get in your vehicle and go somewhere for the night and spend it in your vehicle instead of a motel to see what it feels like. Do it on the weekend or on your day off from work .Go to a state park or forest near your home . Your family may not even know you've gone on your adventure...Tell them you're going on vacation and rent a van or rv to get a good feel for this life. It may very well empower you to continue or make you realize, nah, this isn't for me ....or IS ! And yes, it IS your life, not theirs...I say GO FOR IT and try it out , and then you'll know for sure...Happy Trails !!!

Thank you for sharing your opinions and life experience, so that many of us can pull from your wisdom and strength and or relate and feel not alone in this world for having to make the hard choice of putting ourselves and our happiness as a priority. Carolyn's RV Life Very well said, Carolyn. And from a "therapy" point of view, balanced and healthy. Making decisions for one's own life is very personal and should be self-determined, not driven by the opinions, the pressure or the control of others. That's what it means to be a grown up. Those that hate your boundaries will either change and support you or will lose you. That's their choice.

I respect what your doing Carolyn. More women need to stand up for one another and encourage one another. I have a lot of medical conditions and my mobility isn't that well. Also the cost of renting apartments and houses keeps going up year after year with the economy. When your on a fixed income it's a struggle. I'm seriously considering getting an RV to live in full-time. I've been praying about this and my circumstances for over 5 months about it. If it's God's will he'll work it out. I'm trying to simplify my life and have less stress in my life. I respect you and what your doing and what your staying. Thank you so much for the encouraging words and inspiration. You brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing this RU-vid video.

The greatest critic is often 'oneself' and overcoming the fear ~whether it's finances, health issues, the 'unknown'; it's such a great feeling to move through and over it. It doesn't matter how old you are, there's always something. Finding more comfort from being 'my own best friend' is something I'm still working on and it feels wonderful to move that way. At age 70, I'm even getting excited about hiking and backpacking, even if only on day hikes. They really boost self-confidence. Wonderful discussion topic!

AMEN!!! I lost my Mom 10 years ago and we never had a very close relationship until the end, when I fired hospice and brought her home after she broke her neck and I got her strong enough to live and took care of her. She lived another 5 years and even outlived my Dad. Since she died I realized that I mourned more for the relationship we didn't have all those years, more than actually the loss of her. I loved her, don't get me wrong...but she would try to sabotage almost everything that I did or wanted to do even as an adult. When I spoke with her best Friend many times about it I realized that she was jealous of me actually getting out and doing what I wanted to do and not letting the fact that I was Female stop me. Even though she was successful one time in stopping me from doing what I had earned (like going to the Karate Olympics, after I had earned enough points to enter and had the official invitation) I still was able to focus my energies toward something else. I regret that I allowed her to do that to me, and often wonder what would have happened if I had participated, but even though I was just 17, I could have put my foot down and called a cab for the ride to the airport...after all I had the ticket reserved and the money for the trip and my instructors were waiting at the airport for me. I have that major regret, and I told myself then that I would never allow someone to derail me from my dreams and accomplishments ever again and I haven't. Sure, it's been a lonely rode to haul being mostly by myself in life, but like you Carolyn I have no one to blame for the mistakes or triumphs but myself. And in the end I want more triumphs than regrets. I say follow your bliss, because like you said....in the end it's only you that have to make yourself happy, no one else can do that for you. {{{hugs}}} to you and a smile to the skies for Capone. I know he would still be very proud of you, as we are!

I’ve meet people who live this lifestyle and was able to spend time with them. They have made the world of difference to me. We are taught our whole life what is normal. Then one day your normal isn’t there’s and it can be rally hard to adjust. I understand how you may feel about your brother because I have family that causes tears when I think of lost relationships. But for my health I need to move forward. I feel more welcomed in the last year than my entire life because of those who share this lifestyle. Thanks for this video

Holy Smokes! Carolyn, you NAILED it! The only thing I'd add is to suggest that they promise to hang with a caravan until they feel confident on their own (or for a fixed period of time) before going off on their own. Even the women only group could make lived ones feel confident or less worried. Just a suggestion. I loved all of what you said - you are right on the mark! 💯❗🎉 "I can do this and I am worthy of living my dream."

CAROLYN. You are so right about women not feeling as thou they have a right to do what they want. We have been so programed to do as we told and not what we want. I love the way you are so direct. Right on CAROLYN about how those who really love you will support you. Wow! You put this so well. Thank you for this talk. I needed to hear this. I understand what you said about missing your little brother. You made the right decision by breaking off the relationship. You had to get well and you had to let go of him. Carolyn, I had my family members tell me what to do, and what not to do. Some spoke of fear, an others had different concerns. In reality, it was their fears that they were trying to impose upon me. If someone said "You can't do that", it really meant, "I can't do that so I don't know how you can do it." "You shouldn't do that", means "I'm afraid to do that." It took me until the ripe old age of 63 to figure that out. I lived in my mom's fears. Some of it got in my head, but some of it was I didn't want her to be frightened and worry about me. If I tried to get away and learn my own life, she would interfere...because that is what she had learned from her parents, and grandparents, and friends. We are the sum of all of our experiences, good and bad, and it is up to us to shun what we don't need or want, and heed what benefits us...and be smart enough to figure it out. And make the appropriate adjustments as we go along. (guess I should have waited until minute 7:49 to post this...exactly what you said)

Woman....try it in your car. Your truck . Your van. Rent a small RV. Try it a week. 2 weeks or til month. Keep a log. You do not have to do videos... I am 76. I was going to do that. But right now my legs are in so much pain...I can not walk. Until this goes away...I am land locked. But I still go on trips...stop and sleep at rest stops. Try that.

Well said!! I think you are great! I enjoy watching your videos. One of the things I love about your videos is that you don't sugar coat things. Wish more people were like that. I have a friend that I've been friends with for 12 plus years, when I told him that I wanted to live in an RV and travel he said that kind of lifestyle is for people who are desperate. That not only hurt but pissed me off so I told him that for a lot of people it's a choice and they are not desperate nor am I and if he can't be supportive specially on something he knows nothing about then I don't want to be friends anymore. He finally came around and apologized and has been much more supportive.
