Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! Today, let's take a trip down memory lane to the unforgettable year of 1990. It was a time when Julio Cesar Chavez was truly at the top of his game, with memorable wins against boxing greats such as Roger Mayweather, Jose Luis Ramirez, Edwin Rosario, and many more. As excitement built for his upcoming bout against the undefeated American gold medalist, Meldrick Taylor, Mexican fans were buzzing with anticipation for what promised to be another epic showdown. Little did they know, the events of that night would turn out to be far from what anyone expected.

Humiliated? Look at Taylors face as the fight progressed. Julio was breaking Taylor down and the star struck announcers were not seeing it.

Can you imagine if the ref had not jumped in between castillo and corrales when diego was unloading?! These calls are made in fractions of a second. You could see a vacant expression on meldrick's face, and one second is all Chavez needed to kill him. Take a look at the end of mosley vs mayorga

It's the FAKE American way to glorify his African. At 6:32 into this video; you will hear the FAKE American say, "" RighHand leads SOLID into the face of Chavez"" when Chavez steps back AND Blocks Taylors punch. This is why I stopped paying $$$ to watch FAKE American-Boxing. For example Mayweather, the most GLORIFIED boxer in Boxing history and other FAKE American.

Prove it! Post one link to an article in U.S media that put him down as a fighter. I don't even know why you wrote that. What was the motive? That the American media wanted Mexican boxers to lose? Why? On the contrary, most U.S sports outlets backed the stoppage of the first fight. So go ahead and point me to your source. I have followed boxing my entire life, and I never saw anything but praise for his achievements

I think he was not only the best Mexican fighter at the time, but maybe even the best pound for pound in the world. I'm from Indiana in the USA and I always admired the great Mexican fighters of that era. I think that Salvador Sanchez was a fabulous talent and he would have been champion for a long time if not for the tragic accident that took his life. Mexican fighters of that era were fun to watch and I know how closely the Mexican people followed their favorite fighters. I miss the excitement of those big fights, but it's nice to know that you and your father had a special bond from watching those fights together.

I watched this fight and saw Taylor with speed, flash, and a very clear bias coming from the announcers. I also watched Chavez beat Taylor half to death while Jim Lampley was saying Chavez was trying to stay on his feet. To be clear, Taylor almost died because of that fight. He was never the same. Of course, Lampley thought Steele was a villain for stopping the fight. I thought Steele called it right, as Taylor was out on his feet. I liked both fighters for different reasons, but Chavez was a hard, hard Mexican machine that knew one thing: keep punching. Meldrick was the second coming of Sugar Ray with mesmerizing speed. But there was nothing that could have prepared him for Chavez, one of the great throwback pressure fighters of the modern era. Sad to see such a promising young man get hurt so bad; his heart was strong, but Chavez took him apart.

Taylor was getting pounded, round after round. You could see Taylor was breaking down. Taylor was ruined in this fight. Chavez was destroying him, yet the announcers kept saying Taylor was winning. We could see it was a matter of time before Taylor went down. Chavez is the best.

I remember a boxing coach on tv broke down the last seconds of the 1st fight. He said Chavez led Taylor to the ropes. Taylor followed him. Just to turn him and expose his open side. To throw the power punch. Chavez's experience was on full display.

Ppl always focus on the stoppage but never look at the round. He was going. He started walking to the wrong corner after 11 for Christ sake lol. Not to mention the major wobbles and stumbles after he swung and missed completely cartoonishly falling over with more than a minute left. Not to mention you’re technically not allowed to hold the ropes while the count is going once you get to your feet. Had he not had any signs of damage or to that extent, I’d object but 20/20 hindsight we see JCC while being outpointed with ease, was making him wear every single punch and he clearly carried it long after this fight.

The simple fact is, the ref is not allowed to consider the clock in his decision to stop a fight. The simple fact is, if this had happened with one minute left,everyone would have said the ref saved Taylor's life. This was a TKO victory for Chavez. He worked for it. He earned it.

They have a timekeeper for a reason. Knowing the time is not the rough job and that's why there is a timekeeper. The rest job is to completely concentrate on just the fight. And every amateur ampro is tired if you go down and you get back up you respond immediately to the referee and let him know you're okay. Regardless of why Taylor did not respond he didn't Richard still didn't know how much time was left and he did the right thing.

I remember going to work the next day and l had lost my voice screaming at my television watching this fight. I love both men and didn't want either one to loss. How hard that must be for Taylor and Duva. But total props to Richard Steele. Larry Merchant made himself look stupid when he said Steele should have gave Melvin those two seconds because he worked so hard and deserved them. If a ref knows there is two seconds or twenty seconds or forty seconds left on the clock then he doesn't have total observation on the fighters! Good man. Good ref. Good call. Good fight.

Melvin? Of course he should've given Meldrick those 2 seconds. He was on his feet. Stop with the "He was just trying to let him fight another day" bull crap. If he lets the fight go on, the bell ends the fight. This was the biggest scam in boxing history. And Richard Steele was in the mix of another boxing scandal.
@DanielD.-de9cy
@DanielD.-de9cy 2 месяца назад
@@tjmckenzie4048 If they were in the middle of the ring he probably would have made it to the bell. Many fighters have taken too many shots being held up by the ropes. And again, good refs watch the fighters not the clock. And IF Steele was in on a fix he damn sure wouldn't have waited till there were only TWO seconds left in the fight! If someone had the fix on it would have been for way too much money to cut it that close. And another thing, what if Taylor was the one throwing all the punches in the last 15 or 20 seconds? Steele is just going to tell whoever threw the fight, "Sorry, l tried"?

If you rewatch the 1st match at the knockdown Taylor was still holding onto the ropes to hold himself up, the ref grabs his arms to try and pull him off the ropes to check if he was stable but he was holding on for dear life. Hence, he called off the fight. This is just my honest opinion.

Who cares about the 2 seconds left? Pro boxing is not about gifting someone the fight for the effors. Taylor was in lala land and that officially makes Chavez the winner. AND, you can not be saved by the bell in the last round. Whaching Chavez break down Taylor in the 2nd fight was a thing of beauty.
@danielhenderson8316

Actually, IBF rules at the time stated that a fighter could be saved in the last round only. If Taylor had said jibberish, it would have made Steele ask if he was OK again and then the round would have been over. You can’t say nothing to a ref after he asks twice if you’re OK after a knockdown and expect that you “deserved” to win.
