When I First Said I Loved Only You - Maura O'Connell

Maura O'Connell singing on American Music Shop in the 1990's. I think the accompaniment was at least in part done by her own performing troupe. This version comes from Irish playwright Sean O'Casey's adaption of the earlier poem/song by Canadian schoolteacher George Johnson grieving the imminent death of his young wife Margaret (Maggie). Though the couple were not to enjoy long life together, the poem "When You and I Were Young" contemplates what it might have been to reminisce in old age about their younger days. Some time later J.A. Butterfield composed this hauntingly beautiful music for the poem. Sean O'Casey's play that reintroduced the tune with these words was The Plough and the Stars (1926).

I heard her singing this song in Salt Lake City around 1990, or so, she was with De Danaan and it was first time I'd ever heard the song. Later I bought their LP and have enjoyed it! But, in the meantime, I've found that this is a really old song and probably should be sung by a male voice. But, where I come form, a song is a song and Miss O'Connel's voice is wonderful!

Before my mother was even a thought in my Irish immigrant grandparents' minds, her father used to sing this love song to her mother. Sadly, he died two months before my mother was born (Mastoid) but her mother spoke often of their undying love for each other. His name was Carroll. My grandmother named my mother Carolyn in his honor. She loved this song.

Thanks for the posting, but I've just one further (respectful) suggested correction. In O Casey's play, The Plough and the Stars, the title is changed to "When I first said I loved only you Nora" as the song is sung by Jack Clitheroe to his wife Nora.

Hi Sam. Thanks for posting but I must respectfully correct you re the 'performing troupe.' They are in fact the one and only Chieftains and if you look closely you'll see one of the greatest violin/fiddle players Mark O'Connor playing a mean guitar and the untouchable Gerry Douglas on dobro.

I believe the version with Nora in place of Maggie originates in the Sean O'Casey play, "The Plough and the Stars", the character being Nora Clitheroe.
@paulbrennan8155

GR8 band, Gr8 singer. 'I' would have liked the earlier verses a little lighter. Less mournful. At least a tad up tempo. The last verse could then have the 'change'. I think this O'Casey version is marginally better than "When You & I Were Young, Maggie". For Nora Clitheroe.
