When I was Most Impressed on the Field 

Jacoby Ellsbury: 6-1, 195lbs - runs like a deer.

I went to school with Jacoby, he could dunk in 7th grade at like 5’6” dude has always been a stud

Most impressive thing I ever saw: I played against Matt Olson (Oakland's First Baseman) in high school in Georgia. His school, Parkview High, is #1 in GA every year. This guy went 4 for 4 against us with with 3 of the longest homeruns I've ever seen. One of them went 450-460 feet easily. This was before the metal bats were regulated, but still. Our team was pretty good, but we could tell he was a man amongst boys. Oakland took him first round that summer. Now he's mashing for them in the bigs.

Most impressive thing I ever saw. Coaching an 11u travel team in Alabama. USSSA Major tournament to qualify to go to Disney. Can't remember the name. In any event, we are warming up in the outfield, watching a 12U game between some team out of Las Vegas and one of the best teams in Alabama. Both have pitchers throwing 82 on our guns. One you never heard of, the guy from Huntsville. One you have heard of, Bryce Harper. As a coach, I of course watch other games, and had heard of this lefty on this 12U team from Las Vegas who has hit a home run or walked in every at bat in the tournament. I saw several of his homers, all over the 300 foot fences, even though the temporary fences were set at about 220-250 on these fields. I was wondering why in the world a team from Las Vegas would fly all the way to Huntsville, AL to play in a tournament, and the word was that they failed to qualify in the tournament out west, and really wanted to go to Disney to the National Major USSSA event there, and this was the last tournament in the country to do so. In any event, I figured the Huntsville team would walk him every at bat, since at this time he had already played about 3-4 games, and hit about 6-7 homers. No, they pitch to him every at bat. Walked him once, and he hit 3 homers the other three at bats, one inside the 300 foot fence, and 2 opposite field shots about 350 feet, right over our heads. They ended up winning 4-2 and qualifying for Disney. Harper ended up going 12 for 12 that tournament, with 11 homers and one double, and the rest walks. Fun story, I told my kids that that kid was going to be famous some day, and to get his autograph. Only one of my kids did it, and still has the ball.

That deer story was hilarious lol.

There is a story that went around in 1986 or 1987 that George Bell challenged Bo Jackson to a 100 yard sprint up the foul line. Bo said that he would give George a 10 yard head start and beat him by 10 yards. Then he went out and did just that!

Jacoby was probably playing dumb about his time, because he knew if he was honest it would be impossible to find a partner!

My son used to switch hit when he was younger. He throws left, and pitches, however he had a 12u coach that encouraged him to pick a side, so he started hitting right. He was recently told by club level coach at 15 that a lefty who hits right is a disadvantage, and that he should switch hit. However his swing on right side is very solid, and he routinely hits doubles and triples from the right side, and rarely strikes out. Should he work on his left side?

How do players usually react to rule/strategy changes? Replay, pitch clock, etc. or like radical shifts, focusing on launch angle - whatever. It seems like every broadcaster has a problem with the game changing and I was wondering if players felt the same way. Love the channel - this is the best inside baseball stuff on RU-vid!

how does the Cal Ripken summer wood bat league compare to Cape Cod? I have a kid that just went to Tacoma T-Bolts in that league and didn't do Cape Baseball

Why is the 60 yd the tested distance? Bases are 30yds apart. Seems like a better distance to test. Unless you are running 2 bases.

Playing varsity baseball in high school.. Coach says lets line up the 2 fastest on the team for the 60..so i get called to the line along with future Rockies draft pick Alex Fernandez..the coach drops the hat and we take off..long story short i cross the finish line 1st ..by a narrow margin..i look at Alex and say i got ya..he says to me look..pulls up his sweat pants and he had 5 pound ankle weights on each leg..we just busted out laughing..He was a amazing player who could really fly!!
