When Old Yu-Gi-Oh Players Meet New Players 

I had a Six Samurai deck that used those "monsters cannot attack" spells/traps to protect them while they used their activated abilities to slowly clear my opponent's board. So when I got Master Duel I looked up a youtube video of a Six Samurai deck. It was... a bit different than what I remembered 😅

I have a deck I made that's a Dark Magician/Blue-Eyes hybrid..not competitive, but it's fun nevertheless. And with the new Egyptian god decks that came out, I made one that uses all three of them.. again, not competitive but pretty fun! Now, both of these decks are not "bad" just not as fast or good as my more modern decks

@@JAN0L this right here. Synchro, xyz, and links are easy to learn. But pendulum with the face up extra deck stuff makes my head hurt. It’s even worse when you wanna finish the solo gates in MD but you have to play those pendulum decks. And I’m pretty sure those aren’t even the good kind of decks

@@asunayuuki3583 you trade with friends buy and sell with strangers basically. When you and a buddy go buy a box each of a set but need different cards you pull and trade with each other what you need. Trade value is based on monitary value though.

I thought it would be Dark Hole: I mean how else is he going to get rid of all 4 of those Monsters that he has chained summoned... ...and then his opponent plays a hand trap or negates it with a monster effect already on the field making his slow spell card useless. Swords of revealing light is more of a hinderance than a good card in these types of games: instead of being able to remove cards you're stuck letting your opponent build up a ridiculous combo that you can't counter... you might be able to use a dust feather or a mystical space typhoon: but that's not going to counter monster effects. The only other problem is when you remove a card from the field to the graveyard that allows you to search and special summon, but in most cases your opponent will just do it anyway via Tribute summon and most of your opponent monsters will also have other effects going off at the same time: which is why it's better to try throw a Dark Hole at them because if their combo involved having the tribute summon in a specific order in order to get a certain card on the board: then you've ruined their combo and in some cases locked them out of their original play. In other words, your opponent will have this built up set of monster effects no matter what: negating an attack is not going to last very long when all your opponent has to do is build up next turn to a stage where they just destroy the spell or have a monster that is not effected by spells: swords of revealing light in most cases can't do a lot to stop most things from happening: it's an overhyped anime move that is easy to counter. With an obscure ruling that states if it's destroyed while on the field - it's effect is null and void so basically it can just be seen as a continuous spell that destroys itself in 3 turns with no negate protection or a "you cannot target this card by x": barely even worth playing.

Swords of revealing light is almost as annoying as marshmallon back in the day

Link is simpler as a summoning method, IMO. It's only more complicated when you get into the combos Explaining where the monster gets summoned to seems about as complicated as explaining how Xyz materials work, since they both throw a curveball into the rest of the game's functions

Also turns where faster and simpler but now one turn can last like ten mins with how long some card combos go. Between that and negation hell that's the meta when it finally your turn you mite not get to play at all.

I mean, waiting 5 or 7 minutes for your opponent to end his first turn (and then you get negated on yours) feels way more slow than old yugioh, sure the duel would last longer, but each player would play shorter turns, set a few cards, summon one or two monsters, maybe a special summon and that's it, and then your turn, you do kinda the same and so on, both players get to play more and at a faster pace.

@@Ismael900G Thats what I liked about the older styles. Slower, very deliberate power-plays. Simple and clean. I'm just trying to play a card game, not be a min-maxing speed runner. Feels more like a chess game. New stuff is still fun in its way, but like you said, the whole waiting several minutes for the first turn to be over, only to get your turn negated and lose instantly, just isnt. Actually playing the game is whats fun for me, not winning >.>

Agreed. Hand traps just seem dirty and some what unsportsmanlike. If it can't be countered then it feels unfair. I also hate the whole concept of first turn ftk. How is that in any way fair. They may as well make a card that says "when summoned win game". It should be a duel not a I won the coin toss so I win the game.

@@christopherb501 As a trap card I would be fine with them. Traps can get popped far more easily than cards in the hand. The power creep is what caused the problem. If first turn ftk was not a thing then cards such as AshB would not need to exist. I'm not saying go back to original format. The new stuff is fun and interesting. It would only take a few small changes to bring things back into balance. The whole idea behind not having a battle phase on the first go is so your opponent has a chance. Circumventing that with decks like gem knights is not in good faith to the rules. Like many things in d&d. Rules as written vs rules as intended.

I remember those times. I also remember blowing everyone out of the water when i got my chaos deck. I quit the game because people started playing by the forbidden list where i live the day it came out. Pretty much my entire deck was useless and as a kid that mean't a lot. Coming back the new decks ain't that much scarier than my old Chaos deck so it wasn't as much of a leap. Just had to switch old traps for faster cards since ya can't keep things on the field anymore. Unfortunately all the Errata's made my old chaos deck no longer what it once was. Not to mention some cards still being banned. Master Duel is really fun once you get into it but i am definitely enjoying the N/R event for its slower more methodical play.

Yes competitive ygo has always been scuffed If anything now you actually have ways to stop an opponents ftk

At first I felt the same. But then they throw you into duels with a bunch of cards you never saw before, each with an essay of text and ask you to find the best ways to combine those on your own. Did not felt great in my opinion.

@@Ronald_Ruck the only ones that had an essay of text were the pendulum decks(which I agree, they teach you horribly) and the megalith cards. Everything else was pretty straightforward. It does get kinda bad at the end because you go against Timelords with a lightsworn deck

@@FecalMatador But still when you have not followed the game for over ten years all those archetypes and how they work together are overwhelming. It is absolutely great that they exist and have their own strategies, using different aspects and mechanics of the game. But when you are not introduced to them one by one (like somebody who followed the game all these years) it is a lot to read and connect at once. Dueling against other players feel awkward as I don't want my opponent to bother to read their cards again and again to consider how to react to them. But of course, maybe it is just me.

@Aquarium Gravel How are you liking the game? If you have any friend who also like master duel I highly suggest you and a friend slowly building up decks together, it some of the most fun you can have. Rouge vs Rouge is the best time you can have in YGO.

Duel links is 100% the way to go to get back into the game and learn new pacing/combos. Went from a boomer to enjoying master duel myself

It more revealed to me how little interest I have in the game as a player. I kept my old deck but am doomed to hating the modern game. But I feel only slightly less strongely about hating modern MTG outside commander.

I'm a returning player as well. I have to say that Im really overwhelmed with what i'm experience in master duel. I find my self overwhelm just reading long card description again and again and having hard time to memorize each card name and what they do. Seeing how much special summon and long combo one can do, i end up only reading the opponent card description by the end of their turn with what they have on the field. And still... I'm missing reading a lot of card that they can activate from their graveyard. I think konami should limit how many special summon you can do in a turn to have game interaction between each player more often like classic gameplay.

@@dudono1744 We mainly do that only if there is a floodgate that we need to out first. That is because the Normal Summon no longer goes to a massive beatstick, but rather to a combo starter or extender depending on deck

Oh it’s hand trap you needed 2 minutes ago which is now a useless garnet because your opponent has the same boring af appouloosa on the field with 3200 attack and after she negates every one of your cards you’re gonna get clobbered by a boring generic Accesscode Talker.

That’s not yugioh no more , when we had our unique deck built with our favorite cards , really miss this time when our deck were not op but decent to make crazy combos . Now turn 1 : synchro summon then tribute to synchro summon an other monster , then xyz the same monster , draw 10 cards , activate 50 effects , then summon a 10000atk monster that cant be targeted by effects or monsters . Yes it’s not fun to watch someone do this , you don’t even know what the Fck he is doing

I've noticed a lot of people don't even understand modern yugioh, competitive is actually pretty diverse, with about 10 different decks making it into top cut, not to mention the idea that new cards are the problem, despite the fact that old cards are far worse, old cards allowed for EASY FTK's and was even worse because hand traps didn't exist back then so there was no way to stop it.

As one of those old players I can agree. I don't want to play competitively. I just want to relive some of my old playground days with a bit more adherence to the rules.

I never complained about the price, I actually played back in the day with PRINTED cards lmao. But I do complain about the new mechanics .... a lot, the simply suck lol

This is only really true to an extent tbh, $100 cards were not as common as they are now. And if you look at deck prices for tournament topping decks they've been going up in general since like 2014 for most decks. And the past is no excuse for the present, OCG has no problem with card prices yet here konami refuses to reprint staples that need a lower rarity or just to be more common as much as they should be doing. Pot of desires was one of the only affordable good ones and big surprise, it got yeeted. If your deck can't run extravagance or duality now it's just like I hope you like paying 400 bucks for 3 cards or just missing out on the consistency if you don't. And droplet even got reprinted and it still barely budged. I don't even get what's in it for them, past a point they no longer profit from old sets as it's all secondary market.

This happens in ALL TCGs; it's a romantic conceit, but it never plays out en masse in practice. Unless you can get together with friends and agree to rules that will tone things down, you just can't expect it to happen.

I like a lot of the new mechanics as well, link summons seemed interesting to me as well as XYZ (pendulum can jump off a cliff,) but handcrafting my own decks has always been half the fun for me. It's just frustrating to wait for five minutes to not do anything because I don't play optimally.

I have my own build modern black luster soldier deck that makes it better than playing pure and i demand more supports for it

Links really are just low-condition contact fusion... never really thought of it like that Pendulums are... I think the fact you spent as much time on them as you did on the previous three ExDeck types explains why its kinda intimidating, and you didn't even mention Pendulum Effects In the end, everything except Fusions is Math, and everything except Pendulums is spend materials, get monster
