I love baseball and was pumped to finally have an opportunity to coach and by the time my kid got out of coach pitch I hated coaching and started to despise a lot of people who thought their 8 year old was going pro... My son and I always talked about coaching together when he was out of school and were pretty excited about it! Shitty parents killed that idea quick! Mom’s are the worst!

When I was a kid, I absolutely loved playing baseball - more than anything else. We'd play as many as five games a day in our yards, in the streets and on a field we made ourselves. Good fun. Great fun. And I dreaded when we had to stop to go play a little league game. It was the best of times and it was the worst of times.

When I coached, I always wore a hat. Before the game ....during the game ....or after the game ...when some parent who never even watched practice or barely came to the games came up to me to offer their great advice ....or to tell me how dumb I was ....I just politely said, "you know what this is a great chance for both of us ....I'm actually kind of busy and don't have time to coach anymore ...so why don't you coach this team....or come help me at practice and be asst coach....and then I would offer them my "coach's" hat .....at which point I would hear....ummmm or well i cant because...and the i would cut them off and say, "there can only be one coach. I just offered to let you do it. Since you wont, then I will coach as I see fit....thanks for your help and turn my back and walked away. Worked every time. Parents.....moms running out on the field because johnny fell down and skinned his knee. And the yelling...like lunatics

Mr Coolio. I know exactly what you mean. Parents don't want to help, don't attend the league meetings, never around for practice and some even show up late after practice to pick up their kids while you visit till they do. 17 yrs I donated my time trying to teach what my coaches taught me and tried to make it fun for the kids. The last year I coached the parents made me decide I had enough cause it seemed to get worse every year.

I'm an umpire and I use a similar technique... I try to have a rule book on me and if someone starts yapping about rules from the stands, between at bats, I'll hand them the book. I offer them a cold one after the game if they can find the rule that I didn't get right. Things get quiet and we get back to the game. I have not had it go wrong yet.

My husbands first year coaching and he has none of it. Grew up in a disciplined home and was an athlete himself. Your too kind and too nice 😅. My husband will just tell you the truth and how it is. We lost two in a row our first two games than won 5 in row after those two losses. Parents out of no where wants to coach give advice and at one point a parent tried to run the practice. My husband stopped told the kids to go back to their routine. But I completely understand where your coming from or how about when a parent advices that their son has been working on there pitches and that they only pitch but realize they are better at short stop than pitching

We started a youth league with no national affiliation so we could institute common sense rules that put the kids first. One rule - parents are prohibited from coaching from the stands (yelling instructions, etc.) and openly criticizing players, coaches, or umpires. We had to warn several, eject a few from games, and ban a couple. But it worked and produced a much better environment for the players. But of course, a couple parents who didn't like it used their influence with officials at the town where we used fields.

The worst is when they DO know more than anyone else... coached a girls fastball team and her dad was a former national team player. Such a good guy to coach with, but oh my lord, an angry beast during games. I never understood it, given that he'd seen the worst parents in the world in his career. Talked to him about it and he literally had no idea he was THAT bad. Turns out chirping kids umpires and saying the kind of stuff you say to world championship umpires are different levels of aggression. You can get away with it saying it to an old dude who has heard the same thing a million times, a 15-year-old kid doing his second game? Not so much. But it was so ingrained into his being that he did it without thinking. Crazy stuff.

CT Lookouts vs. The Montebello Mayhem. It looks like the coach was mad because he was trying to call time out but the players were still running, so time was not granted. He does not have to grant the time out if he sees activity on the bases but given the circus that was playing out, he probably should have just been cool and granted the coach the time out.
@baseballumpires6901
@baseballumpires6901 2 года назад
So the coach can't call time he can only request time and in this case it should be done from the dugout door. You are correct. Time does not have to be granted. A live play is happening, time will not be granted to save the defense from making additional mistakes. The umpire handled that properly. Not only that but with the coach out on the field I may just miss a tag attempt. Can't call an out you can't see because the coach is where he shouldn't be. Oops. ;)

It worked, many times to parent would would leave the game and he cold discuss with his child and the child would reenter the game. I know this was probably ot fair to the child, but that is my ruls.

What sucks being an umpire is you have no authority over the parents (at least in my organisation I umpire for), so as a result you have to warn the coach of whoever parents kid is in to tell the parents to knock it off or have the coach be ejected.

Jaqs I used to umpire baseball (many different levels) years ago, and I remember talking to a high school coach (who was also a softball umpire), and he described a summer program he used to run. It was during the day, and involved no set leagues or teams. No parents were allowed near the field, and he hired his high school players to essentially do the coaching, umpiring, etc. Every once in a while, they would take out equipment used for batting practice and other baseball skills. The idea was to create something like The old sandlot, where kids would just play without being part of an organized league or team. There was no pressure to win, just to have fun. I thought then, and still think today, that this is the way kids should play baseball (emphasis on “play”).

It is so nice to get away from the field where we are continually being berated and then go in the gym where no one can yell at us. It keeps my sanity after 36 years of officiating. The abuse continues to escalate. It's no wonder there hardly any umpires under the age of 40. And the ones that we recruit don't make it past their first year.

Those coaches are some of the laziest I have seen during the games. They are not teaching baseball. They are teaching an alternative way to play the game which the kids end up having zero fun and get burnt out by the time they are in middle school. Why? Because of the poor coaching. In this play all you see is offensive players learning how to take a base and then another base, keeping the play alive and celebrating excessively for no good reason. Don't get me started with the parent screaming over and over. You can bet that if a parent from the opposing team stooped to his low level, that same parent would whine about that behavior.
