Hey Ikenna I really enjoy all of your videos and language wisdom and I’ve been inspired to learn some languages as well. I read your book and loved it and will follow it for all my languages, but there are some languages that I can’t use Assimil for. What can I do for any languages that doesn’t have a course in Assimil for my native language?
Hello! If it's not too much trouble, could you also put the japanese subtitles when speaking japanese? I'm learning the language and matching words to sound atm. Japanese subtitles really help.
You learning that language huh? Oh translate me this sentence "if ever the sky will need some light, the universe will cosmologically allign and create new forms of light" They gave me the most fucked up sentences I swear to god
that's what i experienced at 7 yo, couldn't understand a world of Akon's songs back then, now they play Panda by Desiigner and i still don't understand 😂
@Crocerella nah people are just annoying, I’m a native Spanish speaker and if someone tells me they’re learning my language I don’t ask em questions that I know they won’t be able to answer. I guess it’s funny tho cuz whenever someone asks me things in French I’m like “yeah, I only speak Duolingo my friend” and I just nod and smile in confusion lmao

@A҉L҉E҉X҉ S҉ yeah I get you, and I am learning german, so ever time someone asks me and I tell him, he starts saying some weird stuff thinking that's how germans speak.
Some people just don't care enough to learn a new language. It's like that in a lot of the world, if not most of it anyways. I mean it's not exactly like it's easy, tbh it's one of the most tedious, tiring and time-consuming processes I've ever undergone, especially if you're not that interested in the language to begin with.
@ThatRandomLady "In a lot of the world" is absolutely correct, I think you're just misinterpreting that to mean "the vast majority of the world". In the majority of the natively English speaking world this is just how most people are. Beyond that this exists also in China, Japan, and many (most, even) rural communities in developing countries.
@@m_uz1244 I’ve been learning Italian for 7 weeks now and I’ve loved every second of it so far. The only parts that make me anxious... is the speaking part. When speaking live, I don’t have the luxury of looking at Google Translate for quick reference xD Even though I’ve only been learning for 7 weeks, I know a fair amount cause I constantly consume Italian media and music etc.
My whole family went from this to not believing i actually knew the language to making me translate random stuff to "please teach your cousin the language (for free)". I live alone now.

Me with Japanese rn. If you don’t understand literally every single word that’s being said, the multiple different meanings of said words, and a myriad of other factors including intonation, pitch accent, grammar rules, and situational context well enough to understand a sentence immediately before a new sentence is started, then no, obviously I can’t tell you what they just said. If you don’t understand EVERYTHING they said, then you’re really just guessing, and what fucking good is that really?
Funny story: I’m a native english speaker and I have conversations with non-natives in English. There’s nothing quite as humbling as having a Russian correct your grammar.
@@jackevans3609 as a non-native English speaker, I have noticed that non-natives tend to obsess over perfect grammar and spelling. While natives don't seem to care as much regardless if it's a mistake or lack of knowledge. Pretty sure this is true in other languages too xD

I'd recommend familiarising yourself with basic grammar rules and commonly needed conjugations using RU-vid videos, etc. and then doing various exercises of all kinds (reading, writing, speaking, listening) and while you're doing all that you should watch some form of media like shows or movies etc. with subtitles, and when you become more and more confident, start taking the subtitles away for some time.
I think i´d be even more embarrassed if they´d ask me to say a particular line and I didn´t reach that particular part of my dictionary yet. Like, knowing and acquiring a language and being able to communicate with it isn´t translating.
True. Even when you speak a second and third language to a near native level or a really high level, you still spend three years in uni for a Translation Bachelor. (Four in anglophone countries, ig.) And they say you can't even do much with a Bachelor, you need to specialize in your Masters to get good jobs. So yeah. OK but I'm not even learning German, I'm literally from Germany, and now live in the UK. My friend's Mum found out and started speaking to me in the worst German I've ever heard, it was barely understandable, and then when I didn't understand her immediately announced I must be faking it. Like, seriously? You learnt German for 2 years in high school about 30 years ago and you expect anyone to understand you?? I just had to nod and smile and pretend everything was OK but that was painful.

I told a co-worker I'm learning spanish and everytime I see her she wants to know what I've learned. And wants me to speak it. It's so annoying that now I do my best to avoid her.
If your coworker speaks Spanish then it could actually be a good opportunity to practice. Even if they don’t it could be. It just forces you to kinda get out of your comfort zone
also the reason your avoiding her is because your not living up to what you told her, tell her that you are learning in spare time, and if she ask you what you learn just tell her you didn't get time to do it this week, its that simple
You came here to get sympathy didn't you? Well, you won't find it! You have only yourself to blame for this situation. In fact, even your co-worker could blame you. What you are doing is shading her for her behavior, whilst you are creating distance between this caring person and yourself, for the sole reason that you don't deem yourself able to live up to your expectations of her expectations. This is all because you raised her expectations by falsely creating belief that your Spanish is better than it actually is. In fact, you are avoiding her after she was doing you a favor. When you told her that you wanted to learn Spanish, she might even have picked up a indirect request from you to her to create conversations in Spanish, since this is one of the best methods of learning a language. And instead of gratefully accepting this given opportunity, you turned yourself away from her. You broke the new shared interest between you two, you even ruined a potential great friend and relationship. Or even worse, you might just have lost a friend... Avoiding someone is one of the worst things you can do, because how do you react to it? "What is the reason that this person is avoiding me? I thought we had a fun conversation last time, did I say something wrong? Does this person hate me?" Avoiding is a cruel option, because it leaves her in constant doubt of her decisions, in constant doubt of herself, of her past. It creates uncertainty and self-encapsulation, in a place where friendship and joy could have lived. It creates a growing root for uncertainty that blocks proper self-reflection. It bends and twists the mind and weakens the spirit. All these seeds of anxiety grow and keep growing because she keeps thinking about it and it eats her. Eventually the symptoms start to show physically. She doesn't eat as much anymore, she can't even sleep as much anymore because the thoughts don't leave her alone at night. She takes less care of herself and now people actually start avoiding her more, thinking that she is weird and has issues. She falls even deeper in the dark hole of depression. And all the previously stated consequences keep amplifying. Suddenly, she doesn't care anymore. Every day is just another blur that comes and fades, she doesn't bother keeping up the mask anymore that she kept desperately holding on to. She lost interest in society, lost interest in friends, lost interest in family, even lost interest in herself. Luckily, this is only a possible outcome. It has only been a year, there is still hope. Not all light has faded away yet, and the darker the times, the brighter a light appears to the eye. YOU have the possibility to change the future, YOU have fate in your hands! Take the chance now that it lays in front of you, call her and tell her that you love her, no matter what. Even better, tell her all this in Spanish and apologize. Tell her how you behaved unreasonably, but that you were enlightened, that you understand now. A friendship formed after a disaster, only returns stronger than ever. No event is terrible enough that your reshaped band of friendship will be broken again. Never will either of you crave for something anymore, because you found it. You found a happiness that no other friend could ever give you. Not even if he was the most amusing person you've ever seen. Not even if he turned himself into a pickle. Funniest shit I've ever seen. Because the most amusing people hide themselves behind their mask. Who will make them laugh? Inside they cry the hardest. Inside they cry because they okay I'm just learning how to type with 10 fingers and this was a good exercise part 2 coming up next week
When they ask ‘why?’ I always wondered if they know all the opportunities you could get and amazing things you could see in other countries, like, it opens up your mind and helps you have an understanding and better knowledge of the other people that live with you on the same planet.
