Wise words seeing as the same features were built into the original PS4 firmware. Sony benefited greatly from watching Microsoft make their announcement first and then listening to the feedback. I have to wonder if a company now would be smart enough to reverse course like that.
I remember wanting to switch to Playstation because of this I already had a modded OG Xbox that allowed me to turn it into a smart box for my TV so wjat I wanted wad the next gen gaming. Ended up going to PC cuz 1080p 60 was something only PC could do back then
Funny how now Xbox requires internet to even be setup, Xbox games like Halo Infinite are unplayable without internet to download the rest of the game, and now Xbox has bought Activision. Xbox has been doing what they wanted to do a decade ago, just without Kinect. Out with ownership, in with a subscription rental service.
@@riot9179 Some 3rd party ones sure, I know THPS5 was an infamous one, but most Sony made games are fine without internet. Sony doesn't have a Forza or Halo Infinite equivalent where the disc is basically empty/useless.
@BPMa u pc guys r strange.. goin for frames over actual good games.. last year one small game called "Elden Ring" changed gaming industry forever.. & won several awards & director got his name into Times most influential ppl of 2022 list.. only 2nd person from gaming industry to get that honour.. & that game frames were not even stable.. u pc ppl need to get ur priorities right or atleast dnt showcase it in public
@@four11 you should be a little.more specific. The deal isn’t completely in the clear. The FTC can now file its appeal of the decision to federal appellate court, and the two companies must find a way forward to resolve opposition from the Competition and Markets Authority in the United Kingdom. I could care less if the deal goes through. I am 38 now and the good old days of console gaming are in the past now. There was a time when these companies made good quality games but those teams are long gone now. Microsoft could care less about gamers and I feel bad for all the xbots out there.

@@longlivetheblackmamba2-8-24well ofcourse they are, Xbox keeps buying every studio they can get they're greasy hands on, now they did get cod like damn chill
At this point, I might as well believe they had originally envisioned selling the PS4 at the same 500 dollars as the Xbox One, but when they realized that it wouldn't go well, they critically wounded the competition by changing the price tag at the last minute. That's just what I believe Sony capable of.
Considering that the console being overpriced is more or less the reason why they almost lost the 7th generation arms race against Micrsoft, it wasn't *as* surprising as not knowing that the first PS3s costed a fortune and had features mostly unnecessary for a gamer. Meanwhile the Xbox 360 hopped in with a fraction of the price, better Online services, easy to design for hardware and better controller design (I remember my friends telling me they literally got a 360 because unlike the Sixaxis, the controller had rumble. That and the DualShock 3 being the same controller for a decade leaves a sour taste to some. I personally love the old DualShock series but it's probably only out of nostalgia). I might've never lliked the PS4 because of the paid online, but damn did it feel good to see Microsoft done in so hard with their own tactic they used with the 360.
And its insane to think that Microsoft COULD have charged 350 quid for the weaker Xbone because they can literally take the hit............ but didn't.
No, Sony's team were very worried that MS was going to undercut them like they did the Sega Saturn in the US launch. I recall the execs talking about it in an interview and saying they literally danced when they heard what MS was going to charge.
@@mark030a It wasn't just the price of the console, it was the poor developer support, the difficulty to program for, it's success as a Blu-Ray player slowing down software sales, and it's late release.
Their current sales say otherwise, the PS5 is currently outselling both new xboxs 2:1. Thats the XSX and the XSS. While some may argue that console sales are not everything. It kinda is. When scalpers were getting hands on the next gen consoles. Most of them were the PS5 console because they knew people wanted it.
@@TOBI.SARU. They really aren't XBOX has turned into a massive video game library with their gamepass and cloud gaming. One could argue its console sales are irrelevant to the amount of gamepass sales. And before you talk about ps plus premium, you do not get first day release or any actually good games on the premium that have been released in the past 2-3 years
I remember this well. It was very hard to be an Xbox fan in these days. Microsoft threw away the whole generation in one afternoon at this conference and still hasn't fully recovered.
But it WASN'T that conference. The Xbox conference, the worst games console reveal event in history, was on 21st May 2013, 2 weeks before these E3 events. The damage was already long done and it wasn't until late June they finally gave in and liar Major Nelson "flipped the switch" and the now the console wasn't going to be always online.
It’s crazy how the previous generation Sony did exactly what Microsoft did here. Exact same thing, they were out of touch and sold at 499, Xbox took advantage of their mistakes and capitalized. But it’s crazy to think that by the end of the p3 360 era, they both basically sold the same amount. And then now where Sony is the leader by an enormous margin.
I remember seeing the announcement for kh3 and ffxv and then the hammer just dropped when they announced the system didn't need to be always online to play your games. 😂 it was just a magical time man, you've had to be there.
@@Trancymind Don Mattrick was a stupid asshole Phil Spencer is the only reason Xbox is alive. He tried to save the Xbox One but the damage was already done Xbox Series S|X and Gamepass on the other hand are phenomenal
bought the Xbox first because of the kinect. It was fun first but kinda bum because it had few games for it then after a few years I bought the Playstation because of the triple A exclusives like Uncharted 4 and Blooodborne and oh man I never went back. Even bought a PS3 for the exclusives. Metal Gear 4, Last of us and Demons Souls were my favorite. Good times :)
@wind2536 of course it is retro at 17 years old. Its backwards compatibility lets you play ps1 games even if it's a later model that scrapped ps2. You act like retro/discontinued is a bad thing.
Xbox hasn't recover from that disaster still to this day, they were already killing the brand when kinect got released but Xbox one was the nail in the coffin.
I watched this live and the moment they announced the price, the conference ended and it went on sale, I pre-ordered one. I still have my Launch Day Edition PS4 albeit with a 2TB HDD. My PS4's original 500GB HDD I installed into my PS3.
“The Xbox One will have backwards compatibility to select Xbox 360 and Xbox games.” “The PS4 will have no backwards compatibility whatsoever.” 😂 I own both the PS5 and Series X. I love them both. I just wish the PS5 games could play games from the PS3, PS2, and possibly PS1. That is one thing that Xbox has over PS.
As an Xbox gamer myself, it’s just mental the self-own that Microsoft inflicted with this conference. To this day but they still haven’t fully recovered. As Phil Spencer recently said, that was a bad generation to lose. People started building up their digital libraries with that generation.
I'm an xbox fan and I'll admit that Sony didn't even have to turn up in 2013 to win. Microsoft's marketing team didn't just shoot themselves in the foot, but they blew their own entire leg off with them focusing on entertainment and not gaming. Also being forced to buy the kinect and have to always be connected to the Internet didn't help. Like who at MS thought those were good ideas to win fans over?
The best part was Microsoft went first. Literally all they had to do was say no used game limitations and sonys show would have been pathetic. If you look at the games shown Xbox won. But the used game restrictions killed the console before it even came out.
360 was my first console with my favorite game of Halo 3 for years, but this conference made my second console the PS4 with my second favorite game Bloodborne lol
Xbox could have had a chance despite all the fuck ups. The did back track on pretty fast. However, it’s the lack of good first parties that sealed it for them. Meanwhile, Sony was pushing out quality single player games along with getting all the 3rd party agreements. Sony was hungry as they had been the underdogs during the PS3 era. Meanwhile MS got complacent and lost touch with what their core audience wanted.
This is 100% true. Plus with game pass, xbox killed it with that smart move. I have 3tb of storage with my xbox series x halo infinite edition console on top of that.
@@RokushoHasashi Thank you. This console halo edition will keep its value in the future. I keep my console box stored in the closet on the shelf. It is still in mint condition. The controller is in inside the box, never been used.

@@notoriousbig5705 I'm guessing $499 (Disc) and $449 (Digital). It could be more (unlikely) or less (likely), we'll have to wait for Sony to officially announce the price.
