When the DM notes are a mess 

Are his notes a mess, or has he been trying to keep up with a chaotic group?

My notes are an unholy abomination of random ideas and bullshitting, I’ll never show people my shame

“Hold on let me check my notes” *stares at blank page for 30 seconds* *just makes some shit up* me every time.

You know, for gaining sentience from the notes of THIS GROUP, that computer genuinely seems like such a sweet and well adjusted young lady!

This is why we cherish our note taking players, opening the dm notes means summoning something from the far beyond

Oh man I feel this, but instead of messy and too much, I just think about the NPC a bunch and never write anything down Then a month later I have to look them up and my entire notes for them are like “Mmng… Soup Druid”

I lost count of how many times my DMs hit me up on Discord asking if I noted something they forgot between sessions. Or just during a session, a couple of them learned that asking me was quicker than searching their own notes lol

God, I felt that to my core. For the love of God players, write down those names, because you know I will forget where I wrote them down.

Imagine if your players reacted the same way irl if someone shares their name. "You can't be Greg I already am called Greg!"

When your DM notes are written so beautyful that the letters looks like Cthulian symbols and you actually made the necromicon on paper . Happens to me way too often . Now in Sessions i have always a shot gun and from last time i have now a Chainsaw for a hand . GROOVY !

I have to be that note-taker player, not because I am being generous but rather because my memory is bad and I won't remember important stuff that happened the previous week. Our DM rolls to see who will do recap and I don't want to feel caught off guard... it's that same fear I used to get when the teacher would call on me in class 🙂

This is such a fucking mood. I have a set of NPCs, a bugbear and a goblin, that care for an inn the players visit, and is2g i have never written down their names and thus the names have changed every time they are introduced

Ran a "one"-shot (over three sessions :) ) where the players had accrued 2 additional aliases apiece within the first 20 minutes, and they kept asking the name of every supporting side npc while completely ignoring the ones I had actual names for. The though of having to go through those notes ever again still haunt me to this day.

And this is why I was playing online being able to just scroll up and read everything the party did last session.

I am the note taking player. It varies in quality depending on how much effort everyone else at the table puts in.

As someone with both an excellent memory for pointless trivia AND a notetaking habit - Im both my DM's best friend and worst enemy, scenario dependant 😂

I have a spreadsheet with 120 named npcs and almost all the pertinent information for their lives.

I had a note taking player in my first ever campaing. I pray to them every night since that campaing ended...

I had to take time to sift through all my notes and organize them into a binder because it had been a mess for two years. Literally just had it all in a folder. Folder even had sticky notes on it and notecards held in place by paperclips.

When you forget do organize and go with the flow.

Can’t say what our DM notes looked like(okay I can and they were immaculate) he built us binders for our characters that included normal stat sheet stuff, a pencil and dice holder pouch, and lots of extra loose leaf writing paper. If someone in the party didn’t write it down or didn’t remember it the party lost the knowledge

Should have bribe one of them with extra inspiration and maybe a extra feat if necessary, note takers are a heaven sent and worth their notebook’s weight in platinum.

Half of the things I do when I look at the notes that I’ve been putting together for possible future campaigns or stories I’m writing is working on organizing the notes that I put together.

Ha, I enjoy being the note taker player. Was once in a 3.5 year campaign and after handwriting the notes typed them up as well, proud that it comes to 400 pages typed! Take a lot of notes for every campaign and then also keep a separate doc of NPC bios. My friends will forever have the entire memory of our adventures. :)

I'm so happy I wrote down all the lvl 1 character sheets of my players in clear digital notes (did this because they were new so I made a reference sheet with all their abilities on it for them) at least I can read those the other campaign info however... yeah it's a bunch of words combined with a adventure booklet

I no shit have a stack of notes from a homebrew campaign I dm'd a few years ago that make a master thesis look like a middle school newspaper. It wasn't even a long campaign and I look back at it perplexed. Knowing I couldn't have possibly had the mental fortitude to write all this, yet it's in my handwriting.

The thing is I only take in character notes. Like I’m playing a doctor in a setting with a plague, and I’m noting down infections, symptoms, treatments, that stuff. It’s fun, and has lead me to some interesting theories on the true mechanisms of the plague.

Mine are ... yeah ... I tend to keep them organized by campaigns, but aside from that holy heck they are a mess to even order

I have abnormally good memory for certain things, and I then blank out entirely on the most random stuff... or even the same stuff I just had memorized and recited three seconds ago. Do not trust my mind, it is pure chaos who picks when it wants to be right, not me.

I have three notebooks that double as sketchbooks (and sometimes notes for campaigns I'm playing in), a scattering of loose pages, two word docs, a couple notepad files, three different browser based writing/worldbuilding websites, all for just one campaign. I- I get it.

You don't have to take notes when you're an expert at improvising Don't remember the name of an NPC? Give him a new one, and if players remember another name... say he was in disguise. Don't remember the name of multiple NPCs? Do the same, and make it a great masquerade plot.

My notes tend to be overly abstract. An NPC name might say, "Bumblorf", and then never proceed to say anything else. It is just a name written on a page. My homebrew journals for monsters and stuff might include "undead nature. _you know." I don't want to write a what undead nature's full terminology means, because I do know what it means. So yeah. My notes are not for anyone else, and I will never share them online because of that.
