I'm going the opposite direction. I play my Mizuno 221s but I'm also buying and restoring ten and twenty year old Mizuno blades to play along with my modern blades. There is little difference in them until you go back a long way and they're beautiful, feel great, and add a dimension to playing that I enjoy.

I just got my brand new Ping G400s, got a great deal since they are considered a 2 year old club by now. They have Alta Graphite shafts, feels soo good. Forgiving, long but I can easily spin the 7 iron 6,500 or more and I can launch them at 20 or 21 degrees which is good for a 7. I'm a 12 handicap. Really happy with them. I tested the Titleist t 300s, the Cobra f9, the Wilson V6, and the Callaway Mavericks. The g400s had by far the best performance, especially with the graphite shafts.

For me... Getting forged irons was a game changer. With game assisting irons, I couldn't feel anything. Had no clue what the club head was doing! Once I switched to CB forged, I learned so much! However, I am an ex-ice hockey player, who is decently athletic. So, this was for my particular case. There could be many players like me, out there! Side note: I did also invest in an at home simulator. This combined with changing my irons, has me hitting fairways and greens much more consistently!

I'm playing something called Cantera, purchased in 2001 as a set to get out golfing 1-2X per year. Since then I have added Adams wedges and hybrids, along with an Adams driver. This is the end of my second year playing regularly, and I am still improving with the irons in terms of distance and constancy (I have achieved some consistency in gapping), although consistancy dropped off at the end of the season after shooting a sub 100 round as a result of dropping my back shoulder when striking the ball. I also seem to have two swings, one dead straight, and one dead to the right (I'm a lefty) that I need to sort out. My thinking has been learn to play these better, and then at some point possibly get fitted for some senior irons when distance becomes an issue.

Agree totally - easy to chase the most up to date equipment and spend what can be significant sums, without really understanding where your swing and strike is in relation to your scoring. My nephew has an old set of irons and strikes them so sweetly, whereas I bought the latest game improvement irons and only saw a difference after working on the swing basics; should have been the other way around!

Still using Mixuno MX23's from around 2005! Over the years I've asked, either in lessons or in the occasional wood or wedge fitting, if I should change the irons. The answer has always been the same - no. I still like the feel, and bizarrely also the fact that they may not be quite as forgiving as a modern irons - I like to feel my mishits. Having said that I am thinking of looking at some new irons in the spring as I increasingly I dislike the level of offset. My tendency is to hit too much from the inside, and the offset sometimes makes me worried about a shank!

Played a Titleist Tour blade (1-PW) from 1986 for years. Just upgraded to MP20 MB this year. Gained a little distance from stronger lofts (about 3 deg.) even being a little older and slower. Tried a few different clubs in between, but there's just something about looking at a blade behind the ball. Love the MP20, but I still bring out the old Titleist blades now and then to practice. I don't think you'll ever find a better club for feedback, even if it stings a little.

Thinking about to swapping my shafts to Tour Stiff w/115 to 120 grams. Currently at a +3.0 handicap with the long term goal of reaching +4.0 and +5.0 hcp. My game from tee to green is very good, i probably need to get two different sets of wedges depending of weather conditions. Example being in wet conditions, playing wedges with more bounce and then playing wedges with less bounce in dry conditions so that I'm consistently hitting my approach shots tighter into the greens. It's been a really wet year on the east coast and this has made scoring a little more tricky and forcing me to make better choices with course management during play.
