What I hate about these narratives is that it feels like it's punishing the mothers for wanting help and to not be the only one parenting an entire household, including their husbands. It comes across as a sort of "see this is why you should be grateful to be worked to death by your family and not having any identity outside of that, if you don't do ALL of this then you're useless and your family will replace you" kind of situation. I don't think it's intentional messaging a lot of the time (at least i hope not), I just think it's a product of the long history of treating women as nothing more than maids to their families.

And that's my very split feelings about the proud family ... they had episodes with great representation and messaging ahead of their time. And then they had some really problematic takes.

I feel bad for Rene. She was thrown out for doing her job too good. A three dimensional character would have recognized the pattern of her meeting new people, bonding quickly, and being tossed aside to be forgotten. But, that wasn't the point of the episode. And the writers never confirmed if Trudy had a right to be worried or Rene was just doing her job.
@JCArules13
@JCArules13 Месяц назад
Well they actually clearly showed that Trudy had EVERY right to be worried because when she came home, her family acted like they didn’t know who she was, Penny’s teacher said RENE was a good parent to Penny, and her best friend and neighbor acted like SHE DIDN’T KNOW WHO TRUDY WAS EITHER!!! They wanted a straw man argument against nannies so Rene COULDN’T be an actual character! It in fact would have been much better if they wrote things your way!

This episode bugged me as a kid and now as an adult I get why. Oscar is just infuriating this episode; his wife works a demanding (fulltime?) job, does all the housework/cooking, most of the child rearing, most of the emotional labor in their relationship, and it's just....ugh. And I get Trudy feeling "useless" when someone seemingly takes over her duties in the home, but I can't help think of how much women are told our value comes from fulfilling these roles. The episode ending with Trudy once again being burdened with all the responsibility was a downer for me. It should be Oscar feeling he needs to step up to the plate, not Trudy who does literally everything. 😐 Yet, the episode's resolution is....I'm not even sure. That Trudy shouldn't have tried to get outside help because it ended up making her feel less needed and so she should just suck it up and handle everything on her own? Side note, anyone know whether that woman at the end is supposed to be Renee or something? That was odd.

That storyline feels like its punishing trudy. Im learning, from this storyline, that if I get married and have a career, I wont manage the home, I cant ask husband for help. I'll hire another woman (because cleaning is a womans job) and my husband will be into her. I'll be forgotten by everyone and because I'm not doing wifely duties I'll feel hollow and sad

I would even open up the discussion even more to say it’s kind of sad that trudy feels fulfilled being a mule of the family. And the fact that she fell easily replaceable is shocking. And Oscar giving google eyes when he saw that young girl probably not only because she was beautiful and the parents but also he’s worn her level with him not having anything going on for herself like Trudy. Sheesh they were really teaching young girls to put up with anything back then. Makes sense why younger millennials and gen z are not putting up with the bull crap today when it comes to dating let alone creating a family.

This episode didn't work for me. Firstly they gave Trudy the 'Penny treatment' for no reason. Penny treatment is when the writers of this show just deliberately punish the main character when a new character is introduced who is portrayed as being perfect and popular by others. The grown up twins episode is a good example. It just doesn't make sense why the entire family would turn on Trudy when her actions and intentions as a loving mother hasn't changed at all. This show likes to promote the notion that two good people can't exist in one space at the same time, the cast of characters they either have to pick one side and automatically reject the other party. This mentality is messed up. Lastly when it comes to the babysitter character, they way they resolved the tension between her and Trudy was poorly executed, actually nothing was resolved between these two characters. The babysitter entered the picture, became an antagonist for Trudy and then she just disappeared without any interaction or confrontation with Trudy. It seems the Men In Black visited the Proud residents and wiped their memories because even the family don't address why the babysitter just vanished. The payoff in this episode just feels odd to me.

Some episode of “Wife swap” back in the day where the child likes the replacement mum better than the actual mum and isn’t looking forward to her returning. Really heartbreaking if the child straight up feels like the babysitter is doing a better job than the mother.

on the topic of the relationship between children/ babysitters and children/ their own mothers: it´s not uncommon to see babysitters knowing the children better than the mothers. i´ve seen interviews about this and while it´s sad in a way, we have to remember that it´s not that much different than fathers being absent from their children´s upbringing because they´re the "bread winners". most moms who hire babysitters are well-off, but also have to work in order to finance such expenses, therefore being absent themselves. in regards to the episode, since i haven´t seen the original: why couldn´t Oskar or Sugar Mama help cleaning the mess? also, the thing about women "wanting to be in control of the household" is because for the longest time, historically speaking, that´s where they were cornered into. that was the one sphere of life where they held some semblance of control and men would hand it to them since that would solidify their position as housewives/ maids/ babysitters/ mothers and reinforce the status quo.

I know a woman who used to babysit for a family for a while. Fast forward a year, she is married to the father of the house. Several months after that, she’s having that child’s sister. 👀 I remember watching this episode as a kid, and thinking that it was entertaining, but didn’t strike me as being realistic. Now that I’m older, I totally see how that situation is drawn from real life!

While I can understand that that was your experience, that doesn’t mean it’s the most common one in that situation. I had babysitters, nannies, and cleaning ladies growing up and that never happened with my family. There are way more stories where that didn’t happen. I also think it’s a dangerous message to tell a woman that if she hires help for around the house, then she WILL be replaced and should is be happy that she GETS to be worked to the bone. Heck, they could have had the story go your way, but have Trudy either set boundaries for what Rene does, or have Oscar refuse her! That would have made for an interesting story about the strength of Oscar’s character and his and Trudy’s marriage! My point is though, I don’t like how the story is currently written or the underlying messages within. That does seem like a freaky experience to have though, like the cartoon was warning you!

In my family it was a bit opposite. On one side, my immigrant side of the family my great grandmother was the head of the household and her husband just kinda went to work. The black side, my great grandmother ran the household too. By the time I came around, the men in my family were the ones trying to stay “useful”. They wouldn’t let any women lift anything even if it wasn’t heavy. They did all the yard work, despite my grandmother being a gardener and getting angry over it. You would think, “oh men be like that”. But it was so extreme my 80 year old grandfather wouldn’t let me lift an air conditioner (I was 20 years old and can lift my 90 lbs dog). It got really annoying since they would fight over who gets to cook the meat, even though the women cooked everything else. 😂

Great video bro. I feel like the main point of this episode was to drive home the point of how detrimental it is when you make motherhood and being a wife your whole identity. Trudy doesn't have an actual identity and the roles that she play she equates her value to how she can serve other people so thats why when the babysitter came she felt like she was being replaced and no longer serving a purpose. I think it is so important for women to have a life outside of their kids and husbands you need to fulfill yourself on a individual basis outside of the role you play because if Trudy had done that it would have been easier for her to delegate to someone else without feeling like they was replacing her.

It’s not as good as a message as I would think the writers trying to portray. In fact, it reminds me of that one power puff girl episode where a Bubble, Blossom and Buttercup basically want to take a vacation from protecting the city of Townsville, only for them to leap into the future that shows that them abandoning their posts, will ultimately bring forth the downfall of their homeland, as a well as the hatred,abandonment, cognitive decline of their loved ones. The message would be to me if you do not maintain the status quo no matter how much you want to take a break for your mental health everything that will happen as a result of you not staying where you are in life right now will absolutely be your fault and there’s nothing you can do about it. I would call that learned helplessness, catastrophing, an all-or-nothing mindset, and the feeling that you are trapped in your current situation, which, if not treated could lead to a depression . This isn’t just a bad message. It’s medically dangerous, and it promotes a maladaptive sense of selflessness to the point we’re taking care of yourself can make you think you are being selfish. Only being known for upholding the expectations you’ve established and literally nothing else is a bleak way to live.

This is a perfect example of what made the idea of DINK/childfree lifestyles so appealing to me as an adult. I saw lots of shows that had the "mom" character have to handle everything and then it was shown as something she "preferred" as opposed to what she had to do. What on earth were the writers thinking? What younger person is going to look at a future of cleaning, cooking, working full time, and raising kids while the husband/spouse doesn't help much, if at all and say, "yep, that's what I want to do as an adult" instead of finding something a little closer to equal in their relationships? Some shows portrayed single mothers who did it all (think as told by ginger, Llyod in space) and others showed this extreme where she chooses to have to do the brunt of the work. Both of my parents worked together to raise us, and it (parenting) still looked like a terrible job to sign up for in reality.

I’ve experienced it. However, I was the child and the babysitter was my oldest sister. My mom was and still is always working so we usually saw her at night or during the weekends. Because of that, my brother and I spend alot more time with our sister because she was more available. My mom quotes this to this day. When my sister was about to go to college, my brother and I were crying and screaming “ WHO’S GOING TO TAKE CARE OF US ??!!!!!!!! “ right in front of our mom . We were like 7 and 5 so we didn’t understand how rude that was 🤣🤣🤣! But yeah I feel more connected more with my grandparents and older sister than my parents.. My mom did her best though!! She always provided And supports my dreams, she just didn’t have much time to be there

I agree that it felt like they were punishing Trudy for having a career. It was jarring, since the writers seemed to be more liberal in other episodes (I suppose it could be a case of it being written by several people with different opinions). It felt like they were trying to say "you can't do both"/"it's difficult to have two competing identities", but it came off as " if you don't try to do both you are less than". Maybe it would have been better tackled split into two episodes. One episode for the set up and a second to deal with the complex situation and emotions. If the family had taken her emotions seriouly then I think it woudn't leave such a bad taste in my mouth.

One thing I have been thinking about when looking back on the original series is that when I was watching it as a little kid, I fully thought that Trudy was white and that the Proud family/Penny was mixed race. I'm not really sure how to put my thoughts about this into words, but I am curious if that is something that is worth having a conversation about

As soon as Gina saw them and opened her mouth the ladies said they know the drill. The men hire us AND THE WOMEN FIRE US. And with me personally I've been let go from jobs because I'm a threat. Attractive, independent and intelligent under ugly Betty's like Zoe. The karens in management that need trolls under them to feel sufficent. Monica Bellucci film Malena speaks about this more. The only unrealistic thing is Renee was a wealthy trust fund baby. Thats not the collective's situation.

I did NOT like this story, and I hate these stories! I was a kid that had nannies or cleaning ladies because my parents had the money and my mom had severe health issues. My dad never gave her shit for needing help. Hell, my dad was the one that made dinner! You know who DID give her shit about it? The other neighborhood moms! They’d be like “Well, we can’t ALL have the help!” And treated my mom like she was lazy for needing it! Women shouldn’t get shit like that for needing help taking care of the family! You never know another person’s story! Plus, it has severely sexist undertones. It’s treating women like their only GOOD as a wife and mother if they can take care of the family and house! I think the story should have ended with Oscar comforting Trudy, and letting her know that they are all this there for her! I think they should have played back all that the housekeeper/nanny did and made it CLEAR that this was an insecurity of Trudy’s and not a justified fear! Then it could have been a story about how there’s nothing wrong getting help when you need it! They even could have ended the episode with the whole family plus the nanny throwing an appreciation party for Trudy! Or just cut the nanny’s hours. SOMETHING different than this! I never felt like the nanny or cleaning ladies that my parents hired replaced my mom. Not one bit! I was just happy that she had more energy to be with us! And happy that I had more adults in my life that I could trust! And I just wish there were more plots that encouraged women to get an extra help if they need it instead of punishing them!
