When We ALMOST Hope Our Horse is Physically Uncomfortable

It would be easier if every issue that we face with our horse could be cured by the veterinarian, the dentist, or the chiropractor, but many times that is not the case. More often than not, we have to get in their hearts and in their minds, and do the hard work. The scary work. The work that only we ourselves can do.

Thank you! I'm 61 but being with a herd of 5 horses in the recent years made me grow up, owning my own sh*t as they say, being authentic and also, I'm not dancing with wolfes but with horses, thats the feeling pretty often. ❤️

When I was little boy my grandfather had two horses, stallion and a mare and I remember one got sick, I don’t know which one, so had to be taken to vet and taken care of so what happened was the other horse at home won’t eat or behave very well… so my grandfather realised that separating them was causing more harm so he took both of them and he had to pay more just because the other one didn’t like being alone. I was so impressed by that, I couldn’t believe as a little kid that they have feelings and very strong bonds with whom ever they “fall in love” . (Sorry for my english. Is not my native language) Thanks so much for your time ❤️

I definitely hear what you are saying here. I am currently starting my Hancock mare and realizing she doesn't always take me seriously and can be disrespectful at times. That's on me 100%. It's a challenge to "be the bad guy", but I know it is necessary at times. If she doesn't respect me or take me seriously, I'm going to create a dangerous situation. Thanks for the reminder to help me push through what I naturally avoid. Funny how we are the same in life as we act towards our horses.

@@thankmelater1254 I think it's more like I have mothered her and nurtured her since she was a baby and she doesn't see me as a leader. If you are familiar with this bloodline of quarter horse it might be easier to understand. When she is in a huge pasture all I have to do is whistle for her and she comes running to me. The love is definitely there, now I need to work on the setting of boundaries side of the coin. 🙂

I’ve seen this with a horse before & we also had a mustang quarter horse that had been abused and was scared to be caught to be saddled but once saddled he was best riding, kindest, loving, but to get him to that point getting ready was a huge challenge because of his past… they have a mind just like us and remember and have a heart just like us they just can’t talk

Amazing, realistic, logical, counsel. Years ago I had a circus trained Morgan, He had epic patience with me. I was blessed to have him. Not much ever went arrigh with him, but when it did, it was my fault. I discovered in retrospect that, that certanly was the case. I knew after that wonderful experience, that I was immature as a horseman & just got lucky. I never owned horses again. (I knew I was missing something inside of me.) I didn't have a Dewayne to learn from back then, but now I cherish these heart to heart talks you share with us. You are a treasure Sir!. Ride Well Dewayne.!

It's all about boundaries, whether you, your children or the horse want them or not LOL & yes, it's easier for people to try a physical solution or to ignore an attitude, than confront it directly. Also, passing on my compliments to Deanna, who's becoming an accomplished videographer. Much love to both of you from Ontario, Canada!

Dewayne, I never comment on RU-vid clips but my neck is sore from nodding in agreement to this video! You are absolutely 100% right in everything you say. I welcome the shift to more attuned horsemanship these days, but this obsession with finding (or trying to find) something physically wrong with the horse or the gear is becoming too much. I too use the metaphor of the spoiled children. Spot on advice here. Thank you for being brave and putting this out there. (Queensland, Australia)

I’ve been around horses most of my life, and grew up around cowboys. The first thing I’ve seen them do is physically check the horse out, usually while grooming it before tacking up. Once that was done, they just assumed that the horse needed an attitude adjustment in the sense that it was being rebellious or seeing who was alpha.

I adopted a 4 year old Australlian shepard dog I didnt realize he had some reactivity issues from not being socialized when he was younger which made him scared of the big wide world when we adopted him But with time and patience we have got him to like other people Its habit with some animals and it takes a strong trainer and handler to be patient and strong to change them

You’re correct and you have to start working with it and you have to have patience and understanding like you are saying.. I bought a horse that a owner would take this horse and tie his head in between to trees jut to saddle him he was a stallion beautiful horse, I left him a stallion and I worked with him everyday. I fought with him to get him to stop being afraid of being hurt. For two years I worked with him and when I was able to walk out and call his name and he would come running to me. From that point on he was in agreement that I could ride him and he didn’t buck throw a pitch are anything. No remember he was still a stallion and I would take him on trail rides to different places and he did great until a mare came into season. Because he was a stallion I was asked to leave. I told them he’s an animal just like any other animal and this will be a learning experience for him. I said I will keep him away from the other horses because I am still training him to be better and do better. And anyone who has been around stallions knows sometimes they can be a bit scary by the way they start acting up. I didn’t let that bother me. Long story short everything went fine and well. Some people thinks it’s about control and you have to control your horse. We don’t control a damn thing but ourselves. That horse has his own mind and if we can’t reach an agreement with the horse they when. Because what you think you have control over is going to be anyone’s biggest mistake. God, bless you and thank you for sharing. My apologies Sir, I was reading over this and none of this is directed at you by any means. I just wanted to make that clear.

The long-run is where we, as human beings, get scared--especially on behalf of our kids. It's increasingly difficult for people to imagine a result that isn't externally caused! We're (collectively) so head-up-ass that we want our dessert and we want it right now--instant gratification uber alles! Responsibility means we must take a step back and process what will be better in the long run, even if it's more difficult, rather than constantly choosing the easy, quick route of short-term gains.

This! I literally just saw 95% of comments on Facebook bashing about how a horse was in pain on a video of an English riding horse trotting and throwing its head up in the air when asked to pick up the pace. It’s seems anything to do with horses these days the first thing people say is that the horse is in pain and needs to be saved such a victim mentality. In reality horses are pretty tough animals and don’t really display pain unless it severe and there are a lot more horses with attitude problems from being “saved” than there are horses in actual pain.

Totally agree based on being around horses for a lot of my life. I’m no expert or professional trainer but when you know, you know. Part of learning good horsemanship is reading the signs that Dwayne is saying here. I’ve dealt with both the mental and physical. And then it helps once you think you’ve pinpointed it to bounce your hypothesis off of someone you trust to know. We can all be wrong. Nobody needs to hear and know this more than those loud talking heads in the horse industry. And dog industry for that matter. I’m not talking about all pro trainers. I’m more specifically talking about horse owners. OPINIONATED is the word. So, it doesn’t surprise me when Dwayne says he’s going to hear from some people about this subject. I’ve had a few horses that I’ve nicknamed something derogatory but each one has taught me something about horses and myself. Thanks for sharing with us Dwayne.

A good horseman should be able to check for physical issues before anything else and most do. I will say in a case where your good, willing horse starts to refuse tasks that were always no issue, that's when I look for a physical problem first.

I wish you could yell this from the rooftops for the world to hear. My mustang is at a trainer and every video he puts out, there’s a comment on lameness or stiffness or something physical is causing the issue. To me, it tells a lot about the commenter. Stepping up to be a better horseman for your horse is no one else’s responsibility but your own. I work on myself before I work on the horse. His behavior is a direct reflection of my ability to lead him. It’s so easy to put the blame everywhere but ourselves. Horses don’t have horse problems, horses have people problems. We have to be accountable and look first to ourselves.

I do agree with you. I see this very often. Every excuse exept the truth. I agree that your tack can be part of the problem. Or a health issue, But more often than not it's poor horsemanship. Horses kept in stalls fed amazing diets and treats . Bring that overconfined animal into an arena to do whatever . You better have some skills or you will bite off more than you can chew. So many horse human relationship issues start small. Some new horse people act like horses are puppies .
@johnjacobs4207
@johnjacobs4207 Месяц назад
Well said Dewayne. I agree with what you have said. I will add a little about fear. It's coming from ancestors and can't always be trained out or desensitized out. For example the Eqyptian arabian evolved and stayed alive for thousands of years "by" being scared enough of crockodiles and quick enough to escape being eaten. That mind set cannot be trained out. What you are talking about here is people who know nothing about the mind of a horse and have no business making a comment about it. Each horse is an individual and when you come across that rare horse that actually wants to work you will remember that horse as one of the best you have had during your lifetime. We can help those horses that have minds a little less that perfect by being patient yet firm and consistent in asking them to bend to our will and help us out with the job we want them to do. I am almost 80 now and am thankful to Clinton for coming to America and teaching the principle of bend and lunging for respect. My horses are more sensitive than most quarter horses and can sense meanness in a person. So I take a little more time teaching a principle so when they get it a light comes on and they end up willing to to perform happily. The spoiled child syndrome can be fixed by consecutive days riding out side especially behind the cows. Just plain trail riding in a line does not do it. Keep up the good work Dewayne

And I know myself...My great Grandfather was a horseman, and I am trying to turn myself out some, the way I remember him to be. They are a guide, and show me who's the weak one, and they can get testy and nasty when they been fooled with... And then this post, so I am back to drawing board. Who am I to predispose myself to animal doctoring, being round pony girls, me who never owned an animal, who cant deal with bad people in a good natured manner, who won't stand up to that person who just hurts everyone in that overpowering way? Guess I am bare faced looking at who I am, and knowing I better know that, cause they know it straight up. Scary week I had facing something like this, in the world of corrupt humans, But horses, they are the litmus test, in case I dont know who's fooling who. Whoah, I better get a bit more inner grit if I am gone square up myself, and stop another spoiled pony from playing cunning game of showing up good...that was some post, right there. Some people just aint hard in that manner, it takes, and then, some just dont go easy enough on em selves and others. Big stuff.
