Lol when I worked at Subway, this dude was 10 cents short. When I told him he could just take it out of our tip jar, that we didn’t mind, he took it out and snarled, “Here’s your worthless dime.” And threw it at my face aggressively, which hit me on the eyebrow. I was 16 at the time. My manager, who saw the whole thing, came over, shoved his sub towards him and told him to take his paid sandwich and never return because he just assaulted a minor and if they ever saw him again, they’d press charges with the video. My manager was great for sticking up for us. I still text her to this day even though neither of us have worked for the company in years.
@@CapitalLuke yes I’m sure they had taken a poll of everyone they could possibly be on a shift with to make this blanket statement every shift. It is theft. Until it is divided up appropriately and handed out, the tip jar is everyone’s money, and removing even a penny from it is theft. You can and should be fired for it. If customers don’t have enough money to cover their bill, then take money out of your own pocket or let your drawer come up short. Your name is attached to it, and you can deal with whatever consequence comes from that. You are never entitled to steal from the workers. Even for a dime.
Just as a head’s up, there ARE places who will absolutely fire their workers for being cents off in their drawer, so please don’t take this story of kindness and expect it everywhere. Some workers cannot afford to just let even a few cents slide. Listening to this story gave me anxiety flashbacks to working retail. 😅😅😅
You’re not gonna get fired over a penny……I’ve seen and worked at many places. If that’s a company that’s gonna do that, is that a job you wanna work at? Over a penny? Sounds selfish to me. 😬

@@xscreamoqueenx We get written up if we're a dollar or more under and if we get 3 write ups within a certain period we will be removed from our position. Our GM doesn't like to outright fire ppl so he'll move ppl around but other places the GM's aren't always that nice.
I can remember going to McDonald’s a lot when I was about 4 years old. My grandma was trying to teach me independence, so she would have me order my own food and pay for it sometimes. I would often make the people working laugh because I couldn’t even see over the counter yet. I remember one time going up to the counter by myself, ordering some nuggets, and pouring an ungodly amount of coins onto the counter. The guy at the register just gave me the meal for free, and told me to take my money back. He even helped gather it up. It was very wholesome. Sometimes I wonder if he just didn’t want to try and count up $7 worth of change lol. Anytime I think of that though, I get all warm and fuzzy. 😌😂

I worked for Walgreens once upon a time and I got written up for letting a lady go (she had triplets all which were very hungry and cranky) she was a nickel short and super exhausted looking so I just let her go and she thanked me immensely. All the managers were threatening to fire me. I literally almost lost my job because of that
One time, on a trip to the food court, I ordered a brownie when I had 90 cents, and the brownie costed $1.05, but the dude let it slide and I only had to pay 90 cents for it. This was when I was like 8 years old. I still remember this to this day.
this also happened to me when i was really young, the guy let me off with like 50p even though it was candy and i still remember it to this day, i really appreciate that guy
at my subway people would come in and theyll get a sandwich for 2.99 and theyll say "keep the change." so we always just leave a penny out on the keyboard and if a customer is short a penny well just use that penny from earlier on the customer that was short a penny.
Oh yeah I work and McDonalds and I do the same thing. It really builds up actually if enough people say keep the change. I've had $1.60 in kept change before.
About a year ago, I was in line in a store and this little kid wanted to buy a bag of chips but was 5 cents short. He asked the cashier if thats okay and she said "sorry, no". He then went on to return the bag, but I felt really bad, so I told him that I'll give him the 5 cents. He was so happy and thankful that he could buy the chips, it honestly made my day a little better. Since then, I always carry around an extra 10 to 20 cents in coins so I can help out someone who is just a little short. So far didn't get the chance to do that again, but you never know.

@@johnroach9026 As someone who has worked at a gas station if someone is a few cents short I let them go because other people who who pay with cash will often tell me to keep the change if it's a dime or nickel and to make sure the till isn't over I take out the change anyway, (I'm Canadian so no penny) so there's always a small pile of nickels and dimes sometimes a loonie and/or toonie on top of the cash drawer that I put back in if someone is short(and it's faster than them digging for change) .
I worked in a super market and a lot of times kids came in with 5 cents short. Like all the time. I think they just expected to get the 5 cents because I almost always gave it to them, and so did the other cashiers, but they never thanked us or anything. So sometimes I was like, nah. I know you're just doing that on purpose, and you're just buying a snack or something. Not something they need. And I didn't want my register to come up short all the time because of that. I did usually give them the 5 cents but sometimes you're so fed up with that behavior.
I think the problem that arises is that most employees are just following the rules. If you are doing the cash register properly, when you count the money at the end of the day everything should be accurate, down to the cent. When discrepencies arise they catch the attention of those that you are working for. Personally if its once in a blue moon that someone is missing 10 cents, its not that hard for me to say "I gotchu mate" and whip out 10 cents from my own stash. Then everyone is happy and you also get a little boost in morale.
Every now & then, I’d be told to keep the change. I’d pull that amount out of the register, and then use that if someone was short. But, yeah. Registers are counted down to the penny, and every discrepancy is noted.
i mean, it depends on where you work. When I count the registers at CVS I always round a dollar up or down cause its so much easier. I've been doing that for over a year and no one seems to care. In fact, my boss was the one who told me to do that lol. They really only have a problem when its five or ten dollars short, which is rare.
I've never heard of a place so strict that it's not okay to have the change be a little off at the end of the day. I've worked places where if it's more than a couple dollars they'll mention it but never if somethings a few cents off. The point of counting the registers isn't to make sure people aren't stealing pennies, but maybe I've just been fortunate in my cash handling jobs to not have managers that are that crazy about it.
I get you, but you also have to be mindful that you have to put a limit on that, if you start covering for costumers too much, those 10 cents will start to add up. I just hope it's not that common it starts being an issue.
I recently started working at this Chinese place owned and operated by my friend and his family. His policy for this kinda thing is basically, "If they're like, a quarter short, just give them slightly less sauce packets than usual."
When I worked at a grocery store I had a customer who was always super nice to me. I was telling him about the new career I was starting (this was shortly after graduating high school) and he always asked me how it was going every week. We would talk a lot and I even felt like he cared more about me than my dad. One time he came up with just a few things and his card was declined. I paid the $20 something bill for him and told him dont worry about it. Next time he came in he gave me a lottery ticket and I ended up winning about $150. I always like to help good people whenever I can and sometimes it pays off well.
One time my fiance and I were going through a hard time. We had been running around all day paying bills at the utility companies in cash. We were starving and stopped at a Subway as we werent finished with our errands and were miles from home . We only had enough to split one 6 inch sub. So thats what we did and ordered two waters. The ladies in the aubway said they were making a huge pot of soup in the back for the employees and they offered us two bowls with some bread. We were so touched. Just what we needed that day. a little kindness. It is 25 years later and I have never forgotten their kindness
Oh my god. Imagine being a dollar short and expecting to still get the extra item (the cookie) that makes up the difference. That's some entitlement. There's no way I'd expect to get away with being £1 short here in the UK, especially if I could put something small back that would make the difference.
I remember at a grocery store, I went to go buy a snack, I wanna say I was about 5 cents or less short, and the cashier was totally okay about it and said not to worry about it. Kindness goes a long way, honestly. I mean obviously people shouldn't purposefully bring less than what they owe, but those who are willing to just be like "yeah, don't worry about that, I got it" are some of the most kindest people ever. I genuinely hope that cashier is having a good life and that she's doing well.
I think a lot of people don't realize tho that as like a cashier worker often times we can't just let it slide because otherwise our drawer will be off and we won't make the amount of money we were supposed to. I work at the concession stand at our community pool and sometimes whenever I bring my drawer back to our managers at the end of the shift, I will be like even a dollar a short of what I was supposed to have and they are forced to write it in our book of over/shorts and its not their fault either its just policy, so if you ever get mad at someone for not cutting you slack for being like a cent or a dime short, remember that they are doing their job and can't help you or they will get in trouble.
@@abadgurl2010 it's not the employee's responsibility to pay for part of your meal. A lot of times they do, out of kindness and not wanting to deal with what could become an asshole customer, but thinking they should by default is just entitlement.

I wish that I could’ve done this at my last job. Someone was a penny short, and I was about to just let it slide. My boss came up behind me and told the customer to pay what he owes or he wasn’t getting his sub. I glared at my boss, but went to my bag and grabbed a penny from my wallet. If I was able to contribute some change, then I would, but the food industry doesn’t pay much.
Reading the comments is so nice. Five cents worth of kindness sticks around with someone forever. If you’ve ever done anything like that, they will remember it forever. I have one time I remember, at a place I was buying a gift for my mum, I was like a dollar short with some like five cent coins, and the lady just told me it’s alright and even gave back some of the change. Me and my friend were at a rugby match, (I’m British) and we were paying for fish and chips while her mum ordered a drink. Well, apparently the fish and chips would take a while so she recommended the chips. We brought them, 3 pound each when we only had five pound. The woman didn’t tell the price, so when we went to pay we were so embarrassed that my friend ran off to find her mum for the extra pound. I was just standing there with the lady like, “ hey, you like chips?” It was so embarrassing 😳 😂
One day when I was little mom mom sent me into this corner store for the candy that I wanted, and she waited outside with the dog. I had cash with me, and I didn’t know that taxes was a thing. So I had around 4-5 dollars in cash, I don’t remember to well. I ended up going to the cashier to check out, and I was around a dollar and 10 cents short. I guess the cashier felt bad for me and said “you’re a dollar short, but you know what? I’ll pay that one dollar for ya” so I said thank you to the nice man and walked out with my candy, and a smile on my face. I will never forget the nice cashier man.
Omg I hate that they don’t add taxes til after in the US! This happened to me at the airport and it was really awkward trying to work out how to give them the rest of the money when dollars/cents/dimes,etc. aren’t my normal currency (I’m from the U.K.) ☠️☠️☠️
@@stillnai in the us food items arent taxed in sales at all though, so if it was really just candy then there shouldnt be tax. idk what category gum is so maybe it was something like that as well. but yea i think its stupid they dont just show the taxes in the price. so ridiculous. you cant even do the maths easily since different items are taxed at different rates 😭 edit: actually im not 100% sure if its in all the us that this is true, it may vary by state. but i think in most if not all us states, food is exempt from sales tax.

Yea totally depends on the situation. I usually let them go if it's like 50¢ or less. There was one time I had a old lady come in, she must have been sixty somthing, she bought a sandwich but she was like 5$ short, so the poor thing told me to put it back. I felt so bad I told her I would pay. I've never seen someone so thankful over five bucks. I felt so good about it.
See I used to do this. Maybe it's just the location where I work, but we had several customers who would do this on purpose. They would constantly come in with too little money for what they knew they were ordering, and would try to get us or other customers to pay for them, on like huge orders of food. He had to start making everyone pay the full amount because of a few bad eggs taking advantage of the system.

I remember working my very first job as a barista for a coffee place at the university I went to. Some guy, a student, started to pay for his drink, dollars and coins for exact change, and having already counted it in my head I already knew he was a penny short. I gave him a bit to count his money. I was literally about to reach into the tip jar to add that last penny. But before I did he reached into the tip jar and grabbed it himself without me saying anything. And just gave me a look and was all like, "it's just a penny". This was my first job and I wasn't sure what to do. I kinda just dealt with it. But even today after five years I'm still salty about it since it felt so rude to do that without even asking. If he had asked before I even said anything I would have been fine. But just the act of doing it without permission still irks me today.
One of my wildest restaurant stories is there was a guy who was yelling at the employee at Wendy's for having to pay for his drink separately, and the bearded guy behind him offered to pay for it. Being a greedy Karen, the yeller accepted what he thought was a free drink. After the transaction was over, the bearded guy took the cup, filled it with Sierra Mist, and dumped it all over the now confused Karen guy. I will never forgot the pure sadistic look on his face as he left the restaurant. It was like an angel of Lucifer had been in that Wendy's lmao
At my grandmother's store, we always had a "Take-a-penny Leave-a-penny" tray. People would toss in a couple pennies or even a nickel when they left sometimes. Sometimes someone would be just a little short and they could just take a penny and hopefully put one back in some day. What's will get you frowns is when you get a customer like this one guy who just took all the pennies (about 9) and decided to buy as many 3 cent bubblegums as he could. I ring him up for the three 3 cent bubblegums and the guy actually says "No, ring them up separate, I don't want to pay any tax on this." The amount wasn't even enough to tax it anyway, which I told him. I had to prove to him that he wasn't being charged any tax on the bubblegum. The only thing that could have been more offensive to me was if he took money out of a Charity Donation box to buy his bubblegum. Back then, I was still in my early 20s, so I didn't say anything. Today, I would have pointed at the door and said "Get the hell out of my store."
While a penny shouldnt be that big of a deal, I can understand the guy not letting it go, because it could have been store policy. Ive worked at a place that would fire you for letting customers pay less than what they owe, and a single penny is not worth losing your job
Although that's true if that was the case I would have just taken a penny from the tip jar or my own wallet to settle it for the customer. Definitely makes the customer want to come back more too.
Sounds like the best option is to literally go to work everyday with a purse full of pennies of your own to cover anytime they’re cents short. But thankfully I don’t live in USA and products here have prices that make sense.

The reason why we don't include taxes or have those weird "x.99" is because each state and even each county with each state has different tax laws and even a different economy sometimes. The US is just 50 (or 49, Hawaii should be its own thing) countries in a trench coat pretending to be the biggest boy in the party.
I worked at a chain retail store, most the clothing there is over $100 so it wasn’t exactly cheap, the owners of the company must be getting a decent profit especially with all the corners they cut. This dude walks in one day and I’m checking him out and he’s a 1¢ short. I wouldn’t mind this if I had a penny on me or if I could find a penny from literally anywhere, but I couldn’t. This same thing happened to another employee where the customer was a couple cents short at another store and she got fired. I knew about this already at the time of this happening to me and had to tell the customer they’d either have to find the penny, pay another way, or not buy the item. I felt bad about it and he understandably got upset. I tried telling him it’s happened at another store before and they got fired, so I would get fired too and I couldn’t help him. He got even more upset, paid with a card, then never saw him again. I understand why he got so upset, only thing that bothered me was he couldn’t seem to understand it wasn’t my decision or my choice to say no. I had to in order to keep my job and he didn’t believe it and blamed me. I guess I can somewhat understand though, I’d think it’s ridiculous for a company to fire an employee over a penny too. But here we are, they did. Good clothes though, I like the clothes.
One time, I went to a Cafe with my cousins and I didn't order anything, so the dude let me have an orange juice and a snack of my choice for free. Crazy, I know
One time I biked with my little brother to Wendy's thinking they were doing the 99 cent frosty promotion so I put $2.25 in my pocket. Turns out Wendy's was not doing the promotion so I was like oh just get one for my brother please and they gave me an extra frosty for free. Still makes me happy to this day.
I was a manager at Wendy's once upon a time. You wouldn't believe how much free food I gave away for various reasons... Just cashed it out as a manager meal 😁

Seriously tho, the franchise I worked for was only worried about their bottom line. Mgrs received a free meal every day that never got eaten... Times 5 meals/day was roughly $50 of unused free food each day. So long as the money was right and food waste was within range, there were no complaints.
I've had a store do this before. I'm a regular there and didn't realize when I went to pay one day that one of my bills had been pulled from my account. I was short like $10 and the guy went and pulled out his debit card and paid the $10. He's awesome. I consider him a friend, especially after he gave me his number after I told him about my car issues and he said "If you ever break down, call me and I'll come help you!" And no, he wasn't flirting with me. He's gay. He's just an awesome friend ❤️
I love people that are sweet like that. I'm a handyman's apprentice, and he takes lots of jobs for a pretty successful landlord. She has something like thirty properties, and this one tenant is the nicest guy I've ever met. He came over from Puerto Rico, and has almost nothing to his name, but he has the most genuine smile I've ever seen.

I would just reframe it a bit that you are doing it for regular customers because they have built trust with you, not because you don't want to upset them. upsetting people sometimes is worth if its over your boundaries and customers will trust you more in return. The rapport that's built with regulars is priceless. It's mutual trust. Rules are there to be broken whetr it makes sense :) thats what i appreciate about individual customer service
I live in the Netherlands and here the government just said “well, those 1 and 2 eurocents are a hassle and super annoying so we’re gonna take them out of circulation and round everything of to 5 eurocents”. 🤣 Meaning, for example, that if an item has a price tag of €4,98 you pay €5,00 at the register and an item has a price tag of €12,37 you pay €12,35 at the register. But this is only the case when you pay cash! If you pay by using your bank card (debit or credit doesn’t matter) they will charge exactly €4,98 or €12,37 to your card. 😅 It kinda balances out over time so nobody is really all that fussed about it, but tourists from other European countries (where they do use the 1 and 2 eurocent coins) get so confused 😅They don’t understand why you can’t pay with them and why they get too little or too much change back 🤣
This reminds me of an encounter I had at the beginning of the pandemic. There was a woman who ordered at the drive in I work at and had ordered around $5 in food and for some reason her card wasn't going through and she didn't have the money to pay for it. I ended up being the one to get her ticket and brought out the food and even when I tried running the card it wasn't wanting to work but she was very clearly a nurse so I told her not to worry about it and thanked her for all she was doing and I paid for her food out of the tips I had made that day. My job is rather close to a hospital and I didn't want her to not have something to eat when she was either on break, just got off work, or was about to start her shift and it was nice to see it made her happy.
I remember when i was like 5, my mom finally let me buy my own stuff at target. I was so excited. She gave me 5 dollars and sent me on my way. I got a bag of chips . I got to the register and was 2 dollars short. I was going to put them back but she let me have them. I refused and started having a whole breakdown. I said “AM I GOING TO JAIL” she gave me back my five dollars and said “take the chips. you are not going to jail.” I will never forget that
Having worked in the service industry myself, I would have thought there doesn't actually exist someone who would refuse a sale over a penny. Well turns out I'm sort of wrong. There's a gas station across the street from my apartment that I go to almost everyday. They have maybe 4 or 5 employees who all know me by name, its a small business, not a big chain. One night I was a penny short and unfortunately the penny jar was empty. Silly me asked if it would be ok if I brought an extra penny next time and the guy said no. Naturally I smiled and laughed because I figured he was messing with me, but then I realized he was dead serious as he had this look of pure hatred in his eyes as he said it and stared at me. Was a super uncomfortable moment as my smiled faded and I offered to walk across the street and grab one. But then after a bit he grabbed a penny from his pocket and said and I quote "just remember this is coming out of MY pay". I'd like to imagine he was just having a bad day, guy is probably pushing 70 years old, but it was an experience I never thought id have. As it is, he switches from being nice to angry depending on what day it is. I can say I make sure I have extra change now. ☹️
I work retail and honestly, if someone tells us to keep the change, we set it aside for some who happens to be short. If someone doesn't want their change, someone else can use it, but if I find it on the floor, away from the registers, it's mine. Unless it's a large sum of cash. Then you do the responsible thing and put it somewhere, so when the owner comes in looking for it, you may return it to them. (Had a dude drop $100 bill. Had it put in the safe for when he came back. He did, provided proof that it was his and was absolutely grateful to have it back.)
I add to the whole "appease the customer" sentiment, that you really have to weigh your battles. As with the story of the man who was upset about his cookies, forget him. He's not a customer, he is a leach

They aren't regulars, always try to bargain for more than what they pay for, and they have the very nice habit of weighing very hard on the staff's morale with their entitlement and disrespect. And don't even get me started on the crotch gremlins they usually carry around, that will destroy and stain basically anything around them while running into waiters and customers. Whatever's the little bill they will pay, it will cost you more overall. These people don't deserve to be served like people, they're the human equivalent of leeches. Utter trash. Literally.

I went to a Subway with my grandpa when I was young and the lady working there let me have a free cookie. It was a big deal to me and really nice of the lady. I noticed another comment say how the nice deed of a worker stuck with them, and I guess these experiences just go to show that you never know how far a little kindness will go, or how much of an impact a kind deed can have. :) On another note, I do understand not wanting to let people get away with not paying in full or handing free stuff out all the time. I suppose you just have to weigh each situation differently and carefully, especially with how expensive things are getting.
Yeah. I remember a while ago, I was in a McDonalds paying for me and my friend, and was short £3. He pulled money from his own pocket and paid it for me. I was so SHOCKED tbh, but told him thank you over and over LOL. He's a kind man. I think that you just need to learn to read body language sometimes, but if it were me, I'd probably let young children slide if it were only like £2 off. I remember the ANXIETY and would never want to put another kid through that.

Once I was at an ice cream store with my friends and we had about 16 dollars. We thought it wouldn’t have costed a lot because we’re only two but we put on too many extra strawberries 😅 we were off by 20 cents. The cashier was very kind and let us off. I then ran home and gave him a dollar for his kindness ❤ we need more people like this in the society
I'll always remember the time I showed up at a chipotle with a friend, and somehow my friend lost his $20. Unfortunately he realized this after ordering. I paid a good chunk, but was still a few dollars short. We were completely ready to leave out our chips and drinks, but the girl immediately took out her employee discount card and paid it off. Such a good person
So I was working in Books-A-Million right and one time this little boy (about 13 years old) walked in and was about $2 and change short) for some manga that he heard about and wanted to start reading and luckily we had a $5 bill that we had found around the store that we were never going to use. His gestures of appreciation and how thankful he was really made it all worth it. This is what memories are made of. He ended up falling in love with the series and would come in weekly for a new volume and these type of moments are the ones I’ll hopefully never forget.
That's so sweet. Just a little kindness can make a child have such a nice memory of a place. I bet your kindness got him interested in that series more than the manga itself!
I can relate actually, I work at Wegmans, a grocery store in the Northeast and in the past few years we've taken to charging 5 cents for each paper bag we use (proceeds from that go to local charities) but often times when someone is paying with food stamps and needs the bags, there's 5-10 cents that they can't pay for at that time and at that point the easiest thing to do for everyone involved is to void the charge on the bags and let it slide.

I had a situation where I think the lady just didn't feel like giving me change lol. I bought some nachos at the cinema. They were like, I dunno, $6.09 or something, so I give the lady $7, and she just hands me one of the dollars back and said have a nice day 😂 Same thing happened at Dollar General. I just needed to pick up some gravy packets for my grandma so she could make dinner, and I don't remember the exact price, but the lady just gives me a dollar back and said she'd take care of the change. She did the same thing to my little brother and literally dug through her purse to find some change because he was 4 cents short.
When I was like 9yrs old, my primary school had this bookshop within school premises that also sold a bunch of small toys and stuff. People bought those toys a lot since they weren’t very expensive, including me. One time I was buying something and I realized that I was like 10 cents short, and me being a child though it was the end of the world because I just tried to buy something I couldn’t pay for, but the bookshop lady was really nice and just said it was fine. I realize now that it probably wasn’t too big of a deal, but my 9yr self engraved that incident into my memory so hard that I probably won’t ever forget it.
I remember once when I was about 8 I wanted to buy a book from the book fair. When I got up to the counter, I realised I was a few cents short and the lady at the counter made me put the book back because I was short (it was a private school so it’s not like it would’ve hurt them), and I remember being horrified and ashamed when I realised that I didn’t have enough. She didn’t really help the situation at all.
Got nothing to write so here is pancake recipe: Ingredients • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour • 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder • ¼ teaspoon salt, or more to taste • 1 tablespoon white sugar • 1 ¼ cups milk1 egg • 3 tablespoons butter, melted Process Step 1 In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth. Step 2 Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot. Enjoy!
If I personally own a store and it’s my property completely, then I wouldn’t care if someone is short on cash. But if I’m working for someone else and they trusted me with their merchandise and property, I’m not in a position to waive someone’s fee since it’s not my money, product or property. I have obligations to the person I work for in honesty and justice; the customer’s FEELINGS are less important in this case than the RIGHTS of the owner I’m working for. Which is majority of the case since owners don’t really work at the register in most stores. Not sure why people get offended as if the cashier is in a position to make business decisions.
bro your singing our story over here...8 years at Starbucks, now at a Gelato/coffee shop and being nice is easy and is the best policy. Today I had a old dude come in told me we sold him some bon bon chocolates, and in a day they melted...They don't melt like that unless in a hot car I'm guessing? Well he wanted to be reimbursed, I honestly didn't know what to do because come on man once you take something you bought out of store your kind of in charge of it! Ended up giving him 5 new bon bons, he even wanted the pretty box they usually come in but i said i'd have to charge him so i just put it in a cup...The fact is, i could literally lose my job over something so stupid, but i have to be caring, no matter what. Starbucks had money so easy to fix a problem no matter what, but now working for a small business i worry about small issues like this. Well see what happens.
Once, me and my cousin were buying the ingredients and supplies for a lemonade stand. We miscalculated the original price, but tax didn't really compute back then;; but while we were waiting we struck up a lovely conversation with this older woman. When the cashier told us we were a small amount of money off, the kind woman payed for EVERYTHING. So now that we had everything we needed and more, me and my cousin bought other shit cuz we had money. We go to buy it and the cashier tells us we're $.01 off... we had to ask someone for a penny. But I will never forget that women and her angelic kindness. 🙏
Here’s my one cent short story/rude employee story: One time I wanted a mcflurry from mcdonalds and I was like 9 and my grandma made me go in and get it by myself because it was time i start learning to order for myself. Mcflurry was $3.25 (I later learned) and my grandma only gave me $3.00. I was overweight for a 9 year old I don’t know how much I weighed but I was pretty round and stubby. I asked for a oreo mcflurry with extra cookie crumbles and she looked at me and borderline mumbled “are you sure you really want extra cookies..😬” with a ‘yikes-you-could-lose-a-few-pounds-you-should-probably-lay-off-the-mcflurries’ look. I felt really awkward as I was already really nervous about ordering on my own but thats besides the point. I said yeah and she said it was $3.25, and me being nervous my brain skipped over that and I quickly gave her the $3.00. She sassily pointed out that I was short 25 cents and I said okay and went back to my grandma’s car, but because she was speaking so low I thought she said 24 cents. Came back with the 24 cents and she sighed and almost snickered at me and said “you’re still short a penny..” Yall i wanted to cry so bad I was ready to just give up and go home, but the guy at the register beside her just said “here man take the penny” and gave her one on my behalf. I got my mcflurry… and there was no cookie crumbs in it, maybe a pinch of some but it was basically vanilla ice cream, I didn’t say anything though. PLEASE FAST FOOD WORKERS DONT BE RUDE TO PEOPLE JUST GIVE THEM WHAT THEY ASK FOR AND BE NICE THAT REALLY SCARRED ME FOR LIFE. VERY EMBARRASSING 😭😭
Dude that is horrible, inexcusable. Honestly I let kids slide for a lot more than I might let an adult slide, especially if they're in the store by themselves. I ain't gonna be the one to give a kid order anxiety for the rest of their life
I’m a cashier at a convenient store. Often times, I’ll let people slide up to like .40 cent, especially regulars and children. The reason is usually to be helpful (i.e a lot of homeless people come up a few cent short). Sometimes I do it just to get people in and out of the store quickly rather than waiting for them to run out to their car or dig through their bags for change. As a cashier, I can tell how many times I can let short change slide before it will negatively affect my register. There’s always customers, especially teenagers who don’t yet understand the value of money or the importance of change, that will say “keep the change” and will leave my anywhere from .50 cent to a dollar of change. While, that’s silly on their part it allows me to let the old man who is .20 cent short or the 8 year who doesn’t understand there’s tax added on to his .99 cent candy go without hassling them for change.
Yes exactly! I do the same exact thing. Another thing is the company I work for now charges 5 cents for a paper bag ( I think it's to encourage people to bring their own). Sometimes when people let me keep their change I use it to give people bags for free.
Ah, Ill never forget that a man paid for a whole gatorade (around like $4 for one of the big ones I think or something) when I was out biking and I forgot my wallet. Wherever he is, bless that guy
I know when I worked at a fuel booth, not everyone would get all their change from the transfer drawer (usually a couple cents and by the time we would realize, they were long gone). So the customer didn't have that money but it was already accounted for in the cash drawer, so just putting it back in the drawer was going to mess up totals, so we set that money aside and if someone was short a few cents of whatever they were trying to buy, or they really couldn't afford to put much down for gas, or something like that, generally as long they were polite, we'd take from the built up change to cover small discrepancies like that. It was rarely more than 20 cents built up at a time, but it was enough to make a difference in some cases, and management never found out, so why not?
Or if I just didn't have any change, I can't pay for everyone's 20¢ and end up having to hassle some nice people, else my drawer would be off in the end. Its not worth spending my own money to cover a corporations ass and make someone happy.

So often I have customers that are short like ¢10 after they use their Starbucks card and I always feel so bad asking, but the truth is that the register won’t let us just say eh it’s fine. The options are a) have my register be short b) take from the stores tips c) reach into my own wallet d) redo the transaction with like a discount or something and have it show that you did that on your till during audits or e) comp the entire order. We’re really stuck in a rock and a hard place.
That's not Starbucks, that's every cashier everywhere. When people say "eh it's fine" what they are really saying is "my till will be 10¢ short today so that will come out of my paycheck which is fine".
@@SeekerGoldstone I didn’t say it was exclusively to Starbucks. Although I will say that the scenario you just described would not fly at Starbucks. If your register is short, it doesn’t just come out of your paycheck. It can end in a pretty serious corrective action/write up, especially if it happens more than once. It can also cause issues for the shift supervisor at the end of the night. I’m sure this^ happens other places too, but Starbucks is also pretty hardcore with stuff like that.

i always go to this donut shop near my house in the morning, and buy myself some coffee and usually leave a tip. This one time I was a dollar off for my order and they let it slide, it was really nice of them to do that so now I usually try to tip as much as I can at any store.
I remember at my local ice cream shop when the owner was serving me I was 1 dollar short and he just let me be. I later came back and gave him a 1 dollar tip.
I was yelled at by some 80 yr old veteran dude and bullied into letting him and his weird pickle, vinegar, tuna sandwich go for a dollar short. The lady next in line chastised me for making it a big deal and not “being nice”. I was then later yelled at that week for the register being short counted :) No, the price says “6.99” not “5.99”. Pay it or leave it. I don’t want to take the burn for your entitlement, weird boomer stranger.
Yeah I agree. No disgruntled, pushy customer is worth losing a job over. I always struggled with this cuz I was such a people pleaser lol but you could lose your job over stuff like this
Thankfully I've never had to deal with people being short, but yeah, I don't know how this guy proposes to fix the short-changing issue. Like if it's less than a dollar, over the course of the day, and you can make it up from the tip jar at the end of the day, then I guess? I just wouldn't want to bother with trying to remember who's coming back to pay for what you know?
One of my biggest childhood traumas happened when I went on a school field trip with only $5 for lunch. I went up to a junk food bistro who charged me $5.05 for a hot dog. I told the person over the counter that I only had $5 on me and the person just straight up said nope and yelled to the cook "cancel the hot dog!"

Had an awesome ice cream man in my home town. One of the last times I saw him I was buying stuff for my brother and I, turns out I was like a solid 25 cents short or something and he just said “You’re the only kids on this street and you always buy a lot whenever I’m here. You can have it and some other stuff if you guys want”. Loved that guy. Any of y’all in the Dacula area see the ice cream man with the Hawaiian shirt and the barred doors and windows, he a god damn real one stg
I worked at a small convenience store once and this kid came in and grabbed like $20 of candy while only having like $3. I felt rly bad having to tell him he didn’t have enough but around the $5 mark it told him it was good and I just took the $2 from my wallet instead
I was out at Ben & Jerry’s with my two friends, and we each got 1 scoop (usually 1 ice cream would be 3 scoops but we divided it between us) and there was some confusion, we thought it would be $9 but it was $16. The girl working there let us off with the $9, despite being 7 bucks short. It’s little moments like these that make me appreciate the kindness of the workers.

It goes two ways though they could have calculated the price and took advantage of you. Then 40 other people come in and do the same thing. Normally I will just use my change jar but there was this one customer owed $7.27 but he just smiled and said “$7.25”. Normally i would let him slide but you don’t tell me the price this isn’t an auction. If he would have just asked I would have let him slide.
One time I went to a candy store and got 1 bag of candy (the one where you can choose what you want and just put it in the small bag) 12 y/o me went to pay, you guessed it… I was 5 cents short. The cashier wouldn’t give me the candy unless I paid all of it or put it back myself (it would’ve been hell bc it was a bit of everything). Thankfully a classmate of mine gave me her 5 cents, so whenever I ate the candy I would offer some to her
When I worked in a grocery store part time during college I always had a drawer next to me for pens and stuff and I threw all the coins in there, that people didnt take. Often enough someone didnt want their 5 or 10p change and I'd use my "drawer money" whenever someone was short. That way my cashcount was still perfect at the end of the day.
When I was 9 I remember I was getting a book at the book fair and I was a nickel short. The Teacher working there was like “Just go put something back” and she wouldn’t let me go until I put something back. I remember this kind lady that was volunteering said she would pay. And she did. The next day I came back and gave her a nickel. She didn’t even remember me 😅.
In canada, we got rid of the penny years ago. So whenever change is due we always round it to the nearest 5. For example, if it was 2.77, it would just round to 2.75.
The first time this happened to me when I worked as a cashier, I had been working for like a week and I was told that money has to be exact at the end of the day, so when a customer was 1 cent short, I asked him for it and he eded up throwing it to me really mad. After a year if you're 1 cent short I can't care less, another customer is gonna give me free cents for no reason like usually xD
So, a penny short, I would definitely let slide (but, luckily, in Canada, we don't have pennies anymore). I worked at a Tim Hortons Downtown for about a year, and the problem with letting short changing slide is that it starts to happen all the time. For regular customers (the kind that usually pay in full), I would let slide a whole meal and just tell them to pay me tomorrow (and they usually did). For the regulars who always tried to short change or customers I'd never seem before, I was a stickler for paying the correct price. Usually, I would just try to negotiate them down a coffee size to accommodate what they could afford.
I had a completely different experience in Dunkin’ Donuts lol. I was about to buy a toasted bagel with cream cheese and when the total price came out with the tax, I didn’t have enough. I think I was like 50 cents short or something. I was like “never mind” and the lady just asked me to stay and said it was fine. The lady gave me the elder discount so I can afford the bagel lol.
As a retailer, we sometimes have people who don’t want their change, so we keep that, and pay it forward if someone else is short on change. It’s also bad letting people go at like $0.10 or higher, since once we add it up, the profit margin gets really small.
My boyfriend and I went into a convenient store to get Slushies and we got up to the register when I realized I forgot my wallet in my car. The lady behind the register just let us have them. Honestly I think back on that moment a lot and it brings back my faith in humanity.

This happened to me once at Disneyland! I was a penny short on a meal that was already Disney price (a lot $$) and the cashier was like "there are so many pennies on the floor and in the fountains here, it couldn't matter less" which was aight
I worked at Kmart and we always had Pennies and change laying around on or by or registers b/c customers all the time don’t want their change if it’s a low amount (like $0.04). Sometimes people would just tell us they didn’t want their larger change too. We weren’t allowed to keep this $ ourselves, but we just kept it at the register as like one of those penny jars you see at like gas stations. So if a customer was a few cents short to pay with cash we would just use that $ for them. If your register didn’t have any extra change, one or another was bound to. Once when we held a fundraiser and we’re $6.00 short from goal at end of night, I we cleared every register & service desk for spare change and ended up with $5/$6 we needed, so it got donated (while still leaving a few Pennies on each of our mail registers left over for future change needs. People really do reject a lot of money in change, it adds up even when it’s Pennies. *also, we would help people with change in the vents range if we had it, but once it crossed a dollar, unless it was a special circumstance (like the local homeless lady buying her dinner food for the night) once it crossed $1 we made them find a supplementary form of payment or put something back. Unfortunately cashiers at that level in the store have no authority to give discounts or make price exceptions, and would risk their job covering for a deficit if the6 didn’t have the spare change on register to cover it. We were also NOT allowed to use our own $ for customers and could get fired if we got caught.

I think this would rarely happen at a grocery store. I've had to put stuff back but knew I was close to budget, so kinda was expecting it and would already plan what I'd put back if it went over lol.
