When You're The Poorest Of Your Friends 

It's both funny and sad. In real life such cases are sometimes very embaressing.

I relate to the poor friend so well. Except that last part. If I know someone else is paying for my stuff I get the cheapest item.

With friends like that you don't need enemies. And that goes for everyone of those three.

The only person who likes splitting the bill evenly is the person who orders the most. Lol

I remember visiting Mumbai with my uncle some time ago. There was a restaurant where we decided to have dinner. Meanwhile we got refreshed at lavatory and before the waiter could attend us, we had a look at the menu. And we were literally shocked to see the prices in there. A tandoor roti for 80 RUPEES. A normal butter chicken for 2-person portion for 680 rupees. 5 mutton kebabs for 600 rupees. I was kind of struck because we already had used the washrooms and been sitting on table for almost 5 mins. The manager at the counter already had seen us. But my uncle didn't flinch. After going through the menu, he just stood up and asked me to come along, and we started to leave the restaurant. After we left, I asked him, isn't it embarrassing to leave like that, and then he said something I will never forget. "Never be ashamed of what you can afford. The money we spend on things is very hard earned and to spend it just to save yourself from embarrassment is not worth at all." And then we went to another restaurant and had a very sumptuous meal for just 390 rupees which filled every part of our stomach.

This is spot on. It is funny the people with the most money want to split costs equally. Then proceed to overspend and under-consume.

I’m the poorest, but I’m also the one with the least amount of debt. 😅

It's exceptionally awkward in these kinds of situation. I personally have no problem saying I'm broke because I give zero care. If your friends act like this, let's be honest, they ain't your friend.

NEVER BE ASHAMED TO ASK MARKET PRICE. As a chef, depending on the item, it will vary incredibly and we can't update the menu every time. But even we are sometimes like "I am supposed to price this at HOW MUCH per portion compared to last month?"

FYI - half of your friends that seem richer (or more) have insane amounts of credit card debt.

Have been in situations before in both ends. Used to be the poor friend and now the rich friend. I was honest back in the day when I cannot afford anything. It was so embarrassing and I was sometimes bullied. But yet I was upfront about something if I cannot afford it. It saved me a lot of financial issues. Now even though I can afford I always listen to others and try to accomodate. If there is something I really wanted I opt for paying it all by my self so everyone can take part of it without feeling bad. Same thing I did with my wedding. Paid everything for the bridesmaids. Provided travel to destination for everyone and for some their wedding guest attire too. Since it is my wedding so why would anyone be pressurized about it

Judgmental ass friends. I was the “poor friend” in my group of friends, but they never once made me feel lesser. They would always look out for me. Hoodie girl seems more of a cool person to hang with anyways.

One of the perks of my job is that when I work overtime, instead of being paid, we get to order takeout on the company card. I have a little game where I try to get as close to the limit as I can, often getting lunch for the next day, extra sides or desserts. It's great because I had a fiscally responsible parent who never let us waste money on certain items that I can get just because now. Weekends are my favorite because the limit is higher and I can order the best steaks or foreign cuisine.

This is so lifelike that I almost forgot this was a skit. In a group of men, a guy would NEVER let it come up if he knew his friend struggled. He'd just tell the waiter to put them on a check together and pick up his tab.

I CAN'T drink alcohol due to medical issues, but I have been at a table with other people who ordered expensive cocktails and very expensive wine, who were quick to say "split the check evenly". I did it a few times, but no more. Now I say "I will pay for what I got." Of course then the others act like I am being cheap or like I am the asshole in the deal.

Dude, being poor is not good. I was poor, signed up for an 8 week improv class, and we went to dinner in a restaurant which I couldn't afford to eat at. I asked someone for their leftovers and they gave me their leftovers but I felt such a crap vibe from the situation. Btw, I was the most talented performer in the class, and I saw many people from the class go on to accomplish stuff with television and getting articles and publicity and getting projects off the ground. Meanwhile I had no money to start up my own projects, so I relied on some sketchy unethical people to work with me. It resulted in me doing a tonne of work, not getting acknowledged or paid, and feeling a general sense of despair about the world.

I've been short of cash most of my life, so are my friends. Since I have my own practice and earn well, my friends and relatives who have less are invited, wherever we go. It's not that hard to be a considerate friend.

Thats why i don't go out , coz i am broke and its awkward and I have social anxeity _(also im shy)_ MONEY is really important once you get past 21. Like the WORLD literally revolves around money. being from a middle class family , I know my Rich cousins and what opportunities, life decisions and doors they could open *LUCK also plays a role* _(but for me I don't know what luck is, i only know struggle even for the smallest things)_

There was this episode in friends where they highlighted the broke dynamic with Phoebe and Joe being their broke selves at the restaurant and after losing lots of money just to be with my friends, I had to distance myself and only go hand out in each other's houses (I contributed with home cooked food) and keeping in touch by phone. I'm better off financially and now able to afford a brunch with the girls without wondering how I'll survive during the week.

Had a group of friends like this, and while I made the least out of everyone, I could still afford what they can afford, it's just that what they preferred to spend their money on aren't in-line with what I preferred. For an example, they'd rather spend at a beach club while with the same amount of money, I could spend on renting a nice villa/hotel room that even comes with free breakfast, or I could spend the same amount scuba diving. Eventually, I got tired with this group and just spent more time with another friends who shared the same preference.
