Vince Vaughn in Brawl in Cellblock 99. Its amazing how I couldn't buy Vaughn as an intimidating presence in True Detective Season 2 and yet he completely sold me with his work in Cellblock 99.
The biggest one of all time was Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. When Christopher Nolan was preparing to direct The Dark Knight in 2006, there was a lot of controversy of that Heath Ledger was a teen throb and no one thought he could pull off being a menace to society. After he died on January 22, 2008, no one was ready to see what was unleashed on screen that gave it the best performance of all time. Other actors like Keanu Reeves in Speed was another contender as well as Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man and Michael Keaton as Batman from 1989. All I can say is don't judge by what an actor wants to do to give its best performance. I think Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was risky in my opinion but it really paid off what Jim can do with leaving his comedic roots to the side and his dramatic side we don't get to see. It was such a great movie.
I'm always amazed that Kristen Stewart played Princess Diana in Spencer, she's incredible in that and was also unexpected for the same reasons as Robert Pattinson.
i find it really difficult coz very often when casting is unexpected to me, pattinson in batman for example *cough* when i see the thing, it suddenly makes perfect sense. like, given nolan's movies and also batfleck, i just didn't think that bruce wayne suited him at all, but when i saw the movie, casting him made perfect sense. good time was actually less surprising, given a familarity with his previous projects. the surprise to me was that it was successful.
He could have easily cashed in on his Twilight fame but chose to do more indie stuff, that alone shows he wants to challenge himself and do something different.
Good Time was the reason why Robert Pattinson was cast as Batman in The Batman according to Director Matt Reeves. His version is inspired by Kurt Cobain from the band Nirvana as Matt Reeves wanted a grungy look on his Batman. I couldn't believe Rob pulled it off as Batman after I saw The Lighthouse and Tenet. He's a great actor now than when he was almost 15-20 years ago.
@@isaiahvoss I get what you mean though, imagine traveling back to the height of the Twilight phenomenon and telling people that _any_ of the actors involved would give one of the best DC Comics performances of all time, you would be laughed out of reality, yet here we are. Good for him, he’s really carved out an amazing career for himself.
It’s so wild to me people HATED the performances in twilight to the point of branding Rob and Kristen as the “worst actors ever” when they legitimately did a PERFECT job portraying the characters they were hired to play. R-patt has always been vocal about his disdain for Edward and Twilight as a whole but he’s always been amazing at completely embodying characters.
I know right? I read the books cuz I'd heard so much about them and generally enjoy vampire stuff . The books were cringe and the movies reflected that exactly!! The actors did what they were supposed to . It's a shame when an audience can't grasp that fact.
What else can one expect from a bunch of people that read those books and thought they were good enough they would go see a movie based on them? People who read the books and liked them failed to realize that the major characters were actually nothing more than husks... whats more, it's intentional. The major characters are intended for you to place your own persona onto them, so that you may live vicariously. The descriptions are vague and used sparingly enough that they may be ignored. The character motivations are flat enough and basic enough that they can simply be thought of as things that are happening to the characters, rather than the result of anything the characters choose. Turns out, that doesn't work as well when you are constantly reminded the character in fact is not you, when you see their face in every scene. It is even harder when you are faced with the reality of how the characters are actually written, rather than how you mapped your own persona onto them.
The vampire theme was worn out even then but .. I liked Twilight (and Queen of the Damned). Both had hella good soundtracks and interesting plots. Uncut Gems and Good Time .. very good flicks
A few years ago i read an article or something where Rob said that when he first read the book and the script he immediately hated Edward Cullen. So he decided to play him the way he interpreted him: A boring 100+ year old virgin vampire who hates himself. He did it perfectly! You really have to hate yourself to keep doing highschool over and over again for decades.
The Lighthouse definitely isn't for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. I never really had reason to assume Pattinson couldn't act (hadn't seen Twilight, not into Batman, hadn't heard of any other projects of his, & anyway I try to always assume people can impress) ... but he absolutely BLEW ME AWAY with his performance, not just in a "Wow dude can act" way but in a "Wow dude can act on a level most people absolutely can't" way. He's BRILLIANT. I'm thrilled he's been deliberately going for ambitious roles & I'm excited to see what he does in the future.
@@Weirder_the_better Indeed, I was absolutely stunned by Dafoe's performance too! Already knew he was extraordinary but that movie went beyond most any form of most arts I've ever seen
@@mithras666 Idk what that has to do with anything. I've never even heard of Hatman & only saw The Lighthouse recently so my comment didn't imply anything about it or allude to it. ??? Very belated edit: Omg it was a typo for Batman all along wasn't it lol. Still don't get the point but at least I get that now 😂
Robert Pattinson is such and interesting and eccentric actor, it’s sad how misunderstood he he is as an actor. What he did with The Devil All The Time and The King was just so risky but his performance pays off so much. The fact he’s always able to see how flawed the character he’s gonna play is and then he plays into it even more. (Just genius) He doesn’t take himself so seriously and that’s what’s makes him so interesting, because Robert loves acting like he doesn’t know what he’s doing and how he don’t think he can act.😂 Robert Pattinson is one of the most interesting, fun and dynamic actors working rn.
Well, is he really that misunderstood? He's getting cast in all kinds of different movies right now, which is a form of appreciation in it self. Maybe he is misunderstood by the most casual fans who just know the biggest movies, but they wouldn''t notice more complex qualities of actors anyway...
I feel like Robert Patterson has done such an amazing job at avoiding being typecast as "that guy from Twilight". I also love the way he presents himself on camera, as a real person and a character in a movie.
As a huge fan of Twilight, we were all so happy to see people drop their preconceived ideas about him and see just how amazing he is. Ever since the Twilight I've been hoping to see him in way more things
Of course he's been Vocal about it. His PR TEAM knows people hate him for it. Distancing himself from that role by saying "Even I hate the film" gets the dumb masses to accept him as a more serious actor, even though he always was one. The game of fame always caters to the stupidest of the stupid because that's what makes the most $$$.
@@Mutiny960 Nobody hates him for acting in Twilight lol, they just were surprised when he did a better role. You have some insane disdain and skepticism for him, his publicists, and fans of all media.
@@Shiftarus Whoever does NOT have disdain for the plague of vultures that are the Hollywood Media engine has got to have some sort of mental disability. The mountain of historical evidence is overwhelming. Even if you only look at them covering up for *apists and pedos for DECADES, while doing hate pieces against those who tried to speak out about it. I'm surprised you can even read this paragraph.
i think what they did with a mix of both in uncut gems was flawless . have the lead be a professional & majority of the supports be real people & it’s gold .
Yeah and Uncut Gems felt like such a real and stressful movie too. Like it was so busy and all the supporting actors just being themselves really sold it as a 'real' story. And even Adam Sandler's character doesnt feel like it's Adam Sandler, just a sleazy jeweler and gambling addict. The movie just put you on the edge of your seat where you wanna turn it off because it's so stressful, but you also don't want to turn it off because it's so chaotic and real. Like it's just happening to someone out there rn in real life.
Pattinson is my favourite actor today. Feels like the old-school Hollywood actors. A unique personality, without your typical look or demeanour, and of course just a phenomenal actor. Brings something different to the screen.
@@jj-if6it He’s got an undoubtedly unique look. And he’s very pale, relatively fair and actors aren’t usually tall anyway so I’m not sure your argument is even based in fact.
For me, Robert's performance in The Rover was absolutely fantastic. He played a broken and naive character, very different from his Twilight persona. In The Rover, his performance was so pure - you felt for the character and wanted him to survive. That's when I called my good friend's at DC Comics and told them, "Cast this guy as Batman! GET HIM NOW. He's Hot".
No mean feat to play a handicapped person, suffering a gut shot throughout the film, wrestling with being abandoned by his brother. And so happens to be a dead-eye shot with a Saturday Night Special... I was rooting for him an all. =]
I was a teenager when Twilight came out and it wasn't as terrible as people say(the first one), it was kinda fun to watch and had really great soundtracks and the director for movie killed it and it was obvious Pattinson is a high level actor, the role he plays is cheesy and but he was clearly playing the character as best as anybody can and I always knew he's gonna be successful, people who were surprised that he's Actually a great Actor are just naive, just because the movie became a meme it didn't mean he's a bad actor, of course they shit on him for becoming Batman as much as they could but he was clearly gonna silence people.
Especially the first one is a great piece of Americana in a way. And Pattinson brought a lot to that role even though he didn't have much creative freedom.
@@megadoodoo3194 I mean, from an objective standpoint they are very mediocre movies, and their insane popularity despite this mediocrity was truly the preview for how the film industry was going downhill in the early 2010s to become what it is now
I remember my friend telling me she couldnt finish one of his films because she felt THAT anxious and i also remember thinking wow those guys are so incredibly talented to craft stories that can affect people that much

@@laneythelame I went into "Heaven Knows What" not really knowing anything about it at a film festival, the showing was very early in the afternoon and I couldn't help but feel depressed the whole day. It's a really bleak film, yet beautifully crafted
I don’t know if anyone has seen Cosmopolis, but that’s a great performance from Pattinson that came out during the Twilight era of his career. The range that he’s praised for now is something that he’s always held, a truly great performer.
Robert is one of the best actors of this generation hands down. He's done these niche weird indie films because he's proving his talent & range - i.e. challenging himself - what us actors do.
Proud to see actors still doing that, taking on what would be considered “write offs” for established actors, and challenging themselves and seeing if they could pull off certain characters that they normally wouldn’t attempt outside their comfort zone.
Probably the best of his generation I don't see any actor coming close to his range. The way he can change himself from mannerisms to looks to voice in every single character is incredible.
This video alone will probably lead to so many unheard of actors getting roles so I am in full support of this video and I'm proud of you for making it
I hate when people are so narrow minded when it comes to actors. We all have to start somewhere. Look deep enough into someone's work, and you'll see shitty projects they had to take for the sake of getting started, and needing the money. You get a lead role, that offers an entire franchise of installments, guaranteeing you a lot of money and recognition, and you're not going to take it? Bffr. Yeah, you'll always to some degree be known as "that person from that popular thing," but you will get more roles, especially if you work hard enough and find the right connections to directors/writers/producers who see your potential and drive.
Good Time is one of the best films I've EVER seen. I was so surprised by what it was, it captivated me right off the bat. The disbelief suspends itself in that one, and the experience suspends you for the whole duration. + For a long, long time I haven't been genuinely shocked by a movie, but a couple of scenes in Good Time... man, what they did to that security guard at the fairground; his shrieks and 'speaking in tounges' still haunt me.
Theres a reason Sandler looks so good for his age and I think it's because he always did gigs he wanted to do and enjoyed doing. Never forced himself to do a role he didnt think he would not enjoy playing. Glad he got some recognition from Uncut Gems.
Good Time and Uncut Gems are both some of my favorite films and Pattinson in Good Time is an electric revelation. If you haven’t seen these movies, you need to
This was my favourtie actor comeback. So glad all those people gave him a chance, he's truely a master of his craft and I can't wait to see what Robert does next. Great video!
When I saw Cosmopolis I knew Robert Pattinson was gonna be doing better films. He's much like Daniel Radcliffe in that way where after his book-saga success he decided to just do anything that sounded cool, original and weird.
Spot on editing, music choice and narration! I never tire of your style. And 93.2K subs as of this comment - I'll be very surprised if you don't reach the 100K marker before the end of the year! It's amazing how your channel has grown in such a short time, so congratulations!
Thank you! The music in this one was a big experiment because of the use of lyrics, but I think it worked out pretty well. And I know, it’s unbelievable how it’s all been going. If I get to 100K, I won’t even mind if it stops there. I’ll be beyond proud. :)
This video gave me goosebumps, while not seeing any of these movies or even knew who the Safdie brother's were. Looks like it's a good time to start. I've always stayed away from the movies that garnish realism into portrayal when most of us live with our own demons, why would you willingly place yourself back in those environments unless you have made it out of whatever hole you've dug yourself into, unless it's to remind you of how far you've come or it relates to your situation so you feel less alone.
"to make an unmistakeable celebrity vanish" damn im subbed bro that was beautifully put. that's exactly the draw of the movie, it's relatable in a way, to be the cultures outcast but living a beautiful story is very relatable. \ i know this life shit can be beautiful and we all "vanish" at it's peak beauty
I'm sorry, but I'm tearing up right now. They encouraged that girl to write her OWN memoir of her OWN struggles with addiction and rehabilitation then act HERSELF in a movie about those struggles. That's so incredible. Just imagine how much she got out of that. Not even money or exposure or whatever, but the ability to share your story like that and to have hope that it might be able to help others in the same situation you were in. That's just so magical
I've only seen uncut gems, but it felt so visceral and beautiful in its atmosphere (in spite of being what I'd call a dark movie). I need to dig into more of their works.
I literally couldn’t watch Uncut Gems because of how good of a job they did immersing me. I felt so much anxiety watching him gamble his life away and watching awful situations occur because it felt so real. They actually did too good of a Job In my case.
The apprehension and surprise around Rob's acting abilities has always said a lot more about what people think of Twilight itself (and therefore is just a projection of the people themselves) and not of Rob at all. His role as Edward was fantastically done, as a long-time of fan of Twilight can attest. People may not LIKE Edward or Twilight (including Rob himself) but Rob was perfectly cast for the role and did an amazing job. Even when he was typecast and put into Remember Me, he was amazing in that role too. He's always been great. People just shat on the movies he was in and assumed he was a bad actor, which is just. Insane. Now people think they've found some sort of insight into him -- literally just because they LIKE the movies he's in now. e_e
Good Time is one of my "profound" movies. A movie that stuck with me. He plays its so genuinely dispicable and unlikeable, and yet you somehow feel for him as well. Like things could be different for that guy (and guys like him) if his past was just a little different. Some people just seem to have a fate of destroying themselves but all it could have taken to change that was just some moment in the past.
Out of curiosity what other films are your "profound" ones if you don't mind saying? I loved Good Time and maybe you have some film suggestions that I've not seen yet? Doesn't have to be anything like 'Good Time', I'm just interested in the other ones that stuck with you?
@@comment15 Contact, Mother, Into the Wild, Another Year, Elle, would be ones that come to mind for me. All really different in style to Good Time but profound in their own ways. Good Time is incredible though - my favourite film.
@@comment15 just like cam8001, mother and into the wild are two of my favorites. Especially mother! I have never seen another movie that made me feel physically and psychologically ill like that one. Another one is It Follows.
I'm so happy they turned my perception of Pattinson around. I could not have thought any less of him, and now when he's in a film I don't need any other reason to go see it.
Robert Pattinson was already in Cosmopolis, The Rover, and Maps to the Stars, so it is not difficult to imagine Robert Pattinson being in 'Good Time'. In particular 'The Rover' is when people sat up and took notice. Not to take anything away from his performance in Good Time, which for me was Oscar worthy, it's just that the opening statements of this video are not true, and the Safdies were certainly not the first to give him an opportunity to spread his wings, and his trajectory was already heading this way. (He stated in an interview a long time ago how he was choosing roles based on interesting directors he liked.)
Robert Pattison would've been an Oscar winner, that actor who also sings and plays piano. The actor that can play anything. But the horrible disgust that was you know what happened and the poor man got shoved aside as a lowkey romcom actor. Which is so unfair...
I have often been thinking about this more easy approach to storytelling and filmmaking. "Why should i put a light here when it wouldn´t be there in real life."
I grew up around guys just like that, he really nailed that role...even the part where guys who are really mentally disabled are taking wraps for crimes they really don't understand...I've seen that exact thing many times. Except usually the siblings don't care as much as Pattinsons character did in the film.
I already know my comment is going to drive people nuts. But Robert Pattinson was my favorite Batman. When I heard first he was playing Batman, I said PUHLEASE. Well I’ll never ever doubt an actor who’s been type casted again. Because he’s grown into a great actor and I hope to see him in the batsuit more.
I'm sure that Pattinson only took the role in Twilight so he could do what he really wanted for the rest of his life; REALLY GOOD MOVIES that doesn't get the funding they should. But that's just my two cents. He have come out time and time again *against* Twilight, since it's a really fucking toxic look at "love" (more like obsession). I think the same can be said for Kristen Stewart, because she's become an Indie queen since then.
these producers truly embody the idea of just going with the flow, not forcing their part in the movie but rather let the movie make itself. Its like an adventure :D
Keith William Richards was also phenomenal as a first time actor with no prior acting experience! I was blown away by him in Uncut Gems. You know who I also always found myself really admiring for their perceptive on casting non-actors in their films? The Farrelly Brothers! They seem to have done it more as casting friends and family in their backgrounds or brief scenes instead, but nonetheless, they definitely took and made a lot from that guerrilla filmmaking style as well overall over their filmmaking career. So great to see the Safdie’s also had this in their visions as well. Is it coincidence that both examples here are brother duo filmmakers ? Perhaps not.
The first time I got actually attracted by Pattinson was when he was in the movie "Maps to the stars" by Cronenberg. I still remember seeing his sex scene with Julianne Moore into a limousine. Then, I saw him in The Lighthouse and since that time, I could realize how talented Robert was as an actor. As a result, his Batman's character will be remembered as one of the best ones within the next 30 years. In my opinion, some people still don't appreciate Patinson's talent because of Twilight saga, which the own Robert hates to this day.
Pattison was literally in two Cronenberg movies (albeit some of his worst) before Good Time. Just so weird to act like The Safdie brothers gave him his first chance after the Twilight series.
I don't think GoodTime even was a flip for Pattinson. He went straight from Twilight to doing differend kinda characters and movies, couple with Cronenberg (I think those two for him might have been while the series was going). Independent smaller stuff. Thing is that a small majority started to see him after GoodTime and the rest after Batman because he was written off after Twilight. Tenet ofcourse, Devil All The Time too. People were so angry for him to be Batman that it took people in know for like a month to change the narrative and that was a lot of GoodTime which did it because it had a large audience for a small budgeted movie and I don't think Tenet, Devil or Lighthouse were out yet when the news broke out. He did straight after Twilight movies a post-apocalyptic gritty movie The Rover where he is mentally handicapped little brother of Guy Pierces character... and dude managed to keep up with Pierce so obviously he was talented. Was the movie 2014 or something.. anyway longlong time ago it was quite easy to see that he looks for differend kinda parts in interesting settings in a script. He was almost fired from Twilight at the first one because he wanted to do things differently and his agent needed to call him that you are off this week if you don't stop suggesting things and just do what they want because he had no leverage and it's not artsy movie. Meaning even he hates the role and the choices, but it was made for teenage girls in mind so why have layers when brooding sexy guy with piercing look is enough.
Also for example Sandler have been in legendary director Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch Drunk Love from already 90's, which isn't his only drama or drama with comedic elements. Like Spanglish or couple other movies so it's not like it's not known that Sandler can pull it off. Ofcourse every movie needs a right actor for a right role so I don't mean you can put him in anything, but I also mean in this case too that it isn't just seeing something that others haven't and making a risk. The concept was again already proven.
I use to be the guy to hate on pattison just because he was in twilight lol. glad i grew up a bit. Hes an amazing talent and i look forward to seeing him in more stuff.
Great video. He is my favorite actor and has been for a long time. I am so so happy he is getting the respect he deserves. I want to see him in another smaller production soon.
One of my favorite movies of all time, City of God, also used this kind of casting. Granted, the film was in Portuguese, so I can't say how natural the actors sounded, but they all looked amazing in their roles.
This isn't a new thing, Pattinson has been a superlative actor in everything apart from Twilight. "Cosmopolis" right after his stint in the franchise is one of the most truly demented, left-field films I've seen-absolutely brilliant.
Absolutely incredible to see all this critical acclaim for him, finally, after being a huge fan for over a decade. I always knew and nobody believed me!!!!!
I'm happy they will hire less known or unknown actors for the films. I hate seeing a Hollywood movie with the same main hot star. Last week he's action hero now he's romanceman and next week he's the same action man in a new title not related. It's all old. We need new faces and random ones vuz when I walk the street I don't see handsome/beautiful people everywhere. They're all average humans with problems
I'm not much of a movie guy but I want to watch this movie, love Adam Sandler and I love alot how these guys cast there rolls it's really ballsy and unique
Honestly Robert Pattinson is in my top 3 fav actors of all time. I know that’s a big stretch but no doubt he’s one of the best in our current generation. I never saw twilight but I’ve seen his other movies and he’s phenomenal. My fav role from him is Connie tho I’m a huge batman dc nerd, I could’ve said Bruce Wayne but acting wise he blew me away with the character of Connie coz it was the first film I watched of him. I knew he would be amazing Bruce Wayne. His other movie his brilliant. Battinson the 🐐🦇
Uncut gems was truely something special, never stopped stressing the whole movie, I never thought I'd see Adam Sandler in a deeper more meaningful role
Im so glad i watched batman and the lighthouse , changed my perception of Robert Pattinson so much, and i found out he likes games which is another plus , he's right up there with some of my fav actors like henry cavil and keanu reeves
You're putting out great content, keep it up! Best investment might be some braces to help with the lisp. Although that might be characteristic and not worth changing, you should at least consider it.
Catherine breillat casted her more influential roles on highway gas stations. Both the lead of Fat Girl and An Old Mistress were McDonalds encounters. They are godlike, and neither ever really returned to acting.
My dad works on 47th street and when we were watching Uncut Gems he was pointing out all the people he knew. That felt pretty sureal because I spent a lot of my preteen years at his office so it was crazy to see this world of jewlers that is basically my second home on the big screen in a movie.
Robert Pattinson is one of my favorite actors, I remember his teen heart-throb perception back in the day, so much kudos to him as an actor, honestly. And Adam Sandler as well, my goodness, he was brilliant in Uncut Gems, perfect for the role. I gotta say, casting actors out of their typecast is such a good idea.
I think Cosmopolis helped. I found the reaction to Robert after Twilight unfair as he acted as the directors wanted. Before the filming of the first Twilight he went to the location before everyone as he had worked out his idea of Edward and wanted to get the feel of everything, and then everything he’d been working on was scrapped. He was young and did what he was hired to do. They also pushed those movies out as fast as they could. I loved Good Time. I think the brothers are correct when saying it’s best to meet the actor and not rely so much on past performance. They know better and I look forward to more fantastic movies from them as well as Pattinson who was able to live off his Twilight money and spend years doing small projects that interested him.
I get confused when people act like Robert Pattinson was only ever known for twilight and it was some sort of revelation that he did great work later. I'm not even a big movie buff, but I always knew him as just a household name and acclaimed actor either way? Edit: I just googled it, and it turns out all the movies that I know him from are actually from after twilight, so I guess it does make sense after all. In my mind, Water for Elephants and Lost city of Z are both older.
While I didn't hate Patterson in The Batman, I felt the direction he was given was pretty bad.. Like the guys clearly very good, but when you give any actor bad dialogue/shit direction, there's not much he can do with it. Rover is another great film with him and Guy Pierce.
