Okay, I'm a little late to this episode, but this is actually so helpful. I'm writing a novel with vampires and trying to explain as much of the vampirism disease by science as I can, so this is super, super helpful when one of my vampires is draining someone right before they turn them. It's weird, I know, but this is really helpful. Thanks Kyle.

Speaking as a professional vampire (that is, a phlebotomist) you missed some spots. The prime one is the crook of the elbow -- there are three main veins there and most people have at least one of them that's prominent. But if your victim has tiny or very deep-set veins, you can go for the veins in the back of the hand (which become more prominent with age.) Plus, a hand is much easier to get at than a neck.

I believe that a vampire would HAVE to go after veins rather than arteries because of the simple fact that a human/vampire's mouth couldn't stay attached to a human body because of the force of pressure blood comes out of an artery such as the carotid artery when sliced or punctured
@andrewmcnally6357
@andrewmcnally6357 8 лет назад
Arteries generally have a smaller diameter than veins. The pressure is higher but arterial walls are thicker to support the higher pressure. This thickness is why doctors do blood draws from veins, as the arterial walls are hard to puncture. Maybe vampires would prefer veins for this reason.

A injury to the vena jugularis interna would cause an possible air embolism caused by the high negative pressure of the heart. A bitte to the arcus palmaris superficialis wold not look that cool, but still nutrient and oxygen rich blood. To treat the wound its easy to compress the limb to stop excessive blood loss. Nice idea for a video though.

While the aorta retains most of the luminal diameter directly from the left ventricle before the branches of the coronary arteries, it still retains most of the diameter as it transverses to the back of the body through the abdomen. The biggest problem would be sinking your teeth around the spine, back hair and fat and the epaxial muscles to get the descending aorta. Additionally, the idea of sticking your mouth between someone's legs blinds you and exposes your own neck to paralysis or amputation when feeding. As such the best feeding position is to rest your head on another person's shoulder as a visual perch that retains peripheral vision while allowing easy access to a vulnerable, bone restrictioned site to hunt and kill your prey quickly.

Arteries have a larger diameter than veins? This is completely untrue. If you were to examine the average internal jugular vein next to the average carotid artery, you would see it was much larger even in external diameter. Take into account that arteries have much thicker, muscular walls, and the internal diameter of arteries is even smaller in comparison. The idea that a vampire could penetrate down to the internal jugular vein with the typical fang length seen on TV is laughable. The more available vessel would be the much smaller external jugular vein, which can often be seen just under the skin of thinner individuals running down the anterolateral neck bilaterally. However, the pressure and flow rate through this vessel is so low that the vein would collapse under almost any amount of suction, making it a terrible place to feed from without a significant rent in it. This is why more realistic portrayals of vampires show them essentially ripping the necks of their victims open to feed in order to access the deeper arteries and veins where flow is adequate (thus killing them). True Blood has shown vampires feeding at individuals' groins, presumably from the femoral artery or vein. These vessels even in thin individuals are quite deep and essentially unreachable without a potentially fatal injury. Even two puncture marks as small as canine teeth in the femoral artery is potentially fatal considering the pressures within these larger vessels (as he alluded to above). And yes, I'm a surgeon who has accessed and operated on these vessels innumerable times.
@HypeSnype
@HypeSnype 8 лет назад
You must have gotten your degree from a community college then, because on average arteries have a larger internal and external diameter than veins. Some exceptions apply, but to say that it is completely untrue is disingenuous at best and at worst, willful ignorance.
@kevindavis5966
@kevindavis5966 8 лет назад
Uzumaki Nagato As someone who has seen these vessels with my own eyes en vivo and worked on them first hand, I don't care what Google and the internet is telling you, you're just plain wrong. Now go tell the UN how to achieve world peace from your extensive Civilization V experience.
@HypeSnype
@HypeSnype 8 лет назад
I'll take the wisdom of my supervising MD before Google or Civilization V, which are both great in their own right. You can take your straw-manning somewhere else; it won't help you with me. Neither will ad hominems, so we can get that out of the way. I'm sure that is the next trick you will pull out of a hat.
@kevindavis5966
@kevindavis5966 8 лет назад
Uzumaki Nagato If you're a student or resident physician, get back to me when your attending MD isn't holding your hand any longer and you have about 20 years of vascular surgery under your belt. Until then, I'll avoid taking professional advice from someone who has no idea what they don't know. In medicine, that's a lesson best learned early before you kill someone with your ego. Best of luck in the remainder of your education/training.
@HypeSnype

I'm a flying spaghetti monster. You can't prove me wrong, but you know that you probably can't trust me. For the same reason I don't trust your "20 years of vascular surgery" and assertions that directly contradict medical textbooks. Cheers.

I have always maintained that the best bite targets for sucking blood while keeping your "donor" alive are the mass of capillaries in human breasts. You would get a controllable flow of still-oxygenated blood, and the layers of fatty tissues in the area would contribute to a richer, creamier mouth-feel. (Some credit is due to Type-Moon's vampire-related video game, Tsukihime. Though it's not actually a vampire which is feeding in this manner. I also like saying the title of the versus fighter sequel, Melty Blood.)

If a vampire were to bite into an artery, such as the carotid or even aorta or femoral arteries, assuming that they're similar to humans in this respect, would they be able to swallow that much blood that fast? Sure veins are at a lower pressure and wouldn't actively 'spurt' blood like an artery would, but if you're getting more blood than you can swallow at a time, it's just going to make a mess and go to waste! Also, are stomachs big enough to hold all of the blood one could get from a person? Especially if breaking into an artery, I imagine they would get very close to all of the blood in circulation before the heart actually collapsed and stopped pumping (as I'm sure you know, the heart pumps on its own and will pump even if the brain is dead). I don't know off the top of my head how much blood a person generally contains, and have no idea how much liquid a stomach can handle all in one go. Might be plenty, but I've got no idea. More science on the vampires!

im english and we have arteries and capilleries, they are two different things in biology, one type (capillery) is closer to the skin used generally for heat control, (moving closer to the skin when body temperature is too hot to radiate heat away from the body and vise versa) and the other (artery) is either bringing the blood back to the heart or outward from it (cant remember which right now)... at least i think thats what they are, capilleries are also a lot smaller

I like the way Vampires are explained in the Cirque Du Freak series. There 2 types. One that just 'snacks' on humans, leaving them unharmed afterwards, and one that drains their victims dry when they feed. The snackers need to eat more often, but can go unnoticed, as they don't cause any permanent harm. The snackers eat by basically, cutting open a vein with their sharp nails, then drinking. The vampire's saliva acts as a stim-pack, and speeds up healing, so that when the vampire is finished, it heals itself within seconds, repeated doses of vampire saliva like this also causes the human body to produce more blood, and become fitter and stronger as well as slightly increasing overall life span, so a lot of vampires get willing thralls that they snack on. The other type... it doesn't really explain how they do it, but I assume its basically like normal vampire, just get into the neck and drink them dry.
@user-xi5ej4ox5s

How that series explains infection by vampirism from 1 person to another?
@kharnthebetrayer8251
@kharnthebetrayer8251 2 года назад
@@user-xi5ej4ox5s Its a difficult and pretty dangerous process. Has been a hot minute since I read it. But from what i remember, it was, both mortal and vampire cut their hands (both of them) and press the cuts together. The vampire sucks in some of the mortals blood, and the mortal gets a bunch of vampire blood pumped into them. Excrutiatingly painful for the human, and not fun for the vampire. Leaves the vampire weakened for a while, and the human bassically bedridden for a good long while while the vampire blood bassically takes the place of the human blood to make them a vampire. Has a decent chance of killing you in the process if it wasn't done correctly
@user-xi5ej4ox5s
@user-xi5ej4ox5s 2 года назад
Nah. I have heard a "scientific" explanation of vampirism that it is a bacterial disease which inevitably turns a person into vampire if the victim is not killed immediatly. This bacteria replaces mitichondria in vampire's cells making vampire anaerobic ( a vampire doesn't need oxigen anymore ) and making vampire's blood much more vascious ( which makes a vampire much more resistent to injures ). According to this "theory", this bacteria dies when contacts with ultraviolet rays silver or garlic ( and because of this those factors cause necrosis in vampire's body ).
@hyu8826
@hyu8826 8 лет назад
Additionally, preference for blood vessel is determined by vampiric dietary needs. For instance, if vampires are iron deficient, any heme rich blood cell will suffice. But if vampires maintain a greater physical strength than humans through blood doping like Lance Armstrong, the preference would be for oxygenated blood of the carotid arteries. Jugular veins would be slower than the carotids as they drain bloid from the head and be deficient in both oxygen and glucose as the brain consumes both in high quantities. No vampire would bite a shoulder except a mosquito as capillaries are not only the smallest vessels, they are the coldest and take an incredibly long time to pool blood and would likely clot before meeting the caloric needs of the vampire

I have always wondered why any vampire would get blood from a vein. All if the nutrients and oxygen would have been drained from the blood after feeding the body’s cells. Arterial blood is delivering nutrients and oxygen to the cells, and one would think that this blood would be better for the vampire.

On buffy vampires bit in every one of those places, interestingly. Im not sure how many other shows thats true of?Angelus bit the gypsy girl on the femoral artery, they seemed to go for the jugular or the cartoid just randomly, and there was definitely a mark somewhere on the torso at one point but i can't remember where

With vampires tending to require their blood in abundant supply we can count on a disastrous shortage for hospital patients.

Shoulder has the cephalic vein, largest in the arm at the front, and the brachial artery as well. Both are easily accessible.

Truth be told, vampires just sort of instinctively know where to bite in a given situation. Even though I'm only half, I often find my thoughts drifting towards biting if I stand too close to someone. And as a side note, props to you for mentioning Blade. We're pretty close acquaintances.

1:20 how can more blood flow to arteries than venes? I mean its like a cycle, so what goes away from the hearth should enter it again.Can someone explain this to me?

1:20 Arteries do not have a larger diameter than vains and do not have more blood per unit time... Arteries have a thicker wall and a higher pressure, yes. But the same amount of blood has to go to the body, as is transported back to the heart. So it is the same amount of blood that passes. Same amount and higher pressure, means arteries have a smaller diameter. Look it up.
