I used to be totally behind that statement because I have encountered many racist people from all backgrounds and sometimes been treated differently due to my skin color or racial origins. The forms of racism displayed were always tied to individual or community experiences. However, I have been thinking that notion of reverse racism can seen when the racist behavior is being used as a political tool and takes the form of mirroring (e.g. we have been excluded from power so we are now going to exclude you from power). I dunno, though.

Yes, Killmonger's origin is sympathetic. But his actions are irredeemable. When Ross refers to his service record as him "Racking up confirmed kills like it was a video game", we basically learn he kills without remorse or conscience, with those scars on his body being a badge of pride rather than a show of remorse. But the left can't see that, they see those scars as a solemn reminder of his purpose or something, but it's meant to be like he saw soldiers painting tally marks on their helmets or equipment to show confirmed kills and going "Hold my beer". He's _proud_ of all the lives he's taken, not remorseful.

I always hear people connect woke idiots with left politics and believe me, they have nothing to do with left politics, either right politics, they are fucking neo-fascists who use the left as a smoke screen but in reality they see everyone who doesn't fit into their mold as inferior beings that have to be exterminated and see free speech as a threat to their ideology while they are actively washing the younger generations brains with their propaganda to have more future followers, sounds familiar?

It's sad because imagination is necessary for empathy. I remember watching a video of J.K. Rowling giving a speech for a University years ago, she was talking how imagination is the power to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And that's what the far-left can't do. That's why you know it's all an act. And that's the kind of people who are hired to write our freaking comicbooks!

That's so crazy! Like China not wanting the Mandarin to be portrayed as Chinese, despite him having genius intellect and great skills. I, for one, love playing villains, and I think that (leaving out the evil part) they can have a lot of great qualities, like strength, intelligence, looks, etcetera. And I do enjoy the complex, not-so-evil-after-all villains, but I also want to have some evil-just-because-they-like-it villains, too. Some people simply are evil, and they can be very interesting and fun to portray and watch.
@ConscriptedKnightRose

You hit the nail on the head. The greatest villains are heroes of their own story, whether they're admirable in their own way or absolute monsters. These "writers" cannot fathom the idea of people they consider to be evil or villains possibly having any sort of rationale or logical (if not reasonable) viewpoint. Apply that narrow worldview through their filter of identity politics, and you get heroes that are stereotypes of the group they represent, and the same two or three villains, mixed in with "anti"villains that are meant to say "see? we're NOT extremists, this is an extremist (even though we would totally do that given the chance)."

But for serious as a White writer i'll probably never write a POC that isn't of a fantasy race (Elf, Dwarf, etc), not because i don't think i couldn't do it and do it well but due to the fear of being labeled a racist or a bigot by idiots no matter how well written said villain is, because a white dude made a POC a Villain.

I think the opinion of these morons shouldn't scare you. Minority or not, just make your characters work, so their origins, gender or the color of their skin isn't what the character revolves around entirely. Don't make a character thats all about being a woman for exemple. Make a good character that happens to be a woman. Same for everything else.

I've written and created many characters over the years. The most evil and despicable characters were characters that I created by tapping into my own evil nature and crafting them from that nature. Granted, there were other people in my life that I used as reference, but inevitably the most evil characteristics in all of my evil characters came from my own evil nature. I think that's what a conscientious writer actually does.....actually, a conscientious HUMAN would do that. Nobody is "beyond" evil. Nobody.

Magneto and Dr. Doom aren't true villians. They are anti-villians, the inversion of the anti-hero. Anti-heros do the right thing out of self interest. Anti-villians do horrible things, but their desires are noble. Magneto originally is trying to protect persecuted people. Dr. Doom becomes dictator of his home country because they are too backwards to desire social advancement into a modern world without strong-arm laws. Both of them are fair and even generous with those who assist them in their goals, but deal with opposition in brutal impunity. I remember several story archs where Spider-Man talks down Dr. Doom from commenting terrorism by bringing up how badly it would reflect on his nation if he proceeded with the action. The Joker however is a true villian. He has no noble objectives, just likes to see chaos. It abusive to all his underlings, not just Harley Quinn, and has no remorse when someone who he'd been working with dies. As for diversity...if we look into history we see that the most successful villians are highly capable individuals who normally come from some sort of highly repressed backgrounds. But instead of gaining a solid work ethic from overcoming their own past they aquire a MASSIVE chip on their shoulders. And then choose to plot a way to settle their grudge with the world. Really if you want to make any hero seem heroic you have to give them an impressive villian to combat, the more well written the villians then the more impressive the heroics.

I have been studying the early twentieth century and I have come to learn a lot about some of the big villains of history. I learned that Hitler's hatred of the Jews was not specific to himself, that he lost all of his friends during the war, was hopitslised by mustard gas, had a horrible childhood, lost his mother when he was little, refused the use of chemical weapons, was a tea tottaler, a vegetarian, was radicalised by socialist professors in Austria and had a crush on a young Jewish girl as a boy. I am not defending his horrible actions, but I think it is useful to know more about people (even the ones you hate) and not chalk it up to being evil for the sake of being evil. It paints a startling picture of a depressed and angry man who plunged the world into horrible pain. The potential lies in every person for good or I'll, and to think otherwise is dangerously naive. Good video by the way. Keep it going.

Something else I've noticed is that despite the fact you can make anything you want in a comicbook, I don't know any minority characters who are rich millionaires whose wealth ISN'T a result of crime based activities. And before you say Black Panther, his wealth was inherited via a monarchy so that doesn't count in my opinion.

What's sad is if they actually could think creatively, I wouldn't mind seeing a character struggle with the idea that they can't believe they're capable of doing wrong within self reflection. To finally break out of their ideal bubble and to realize that they can be wrong for pushing forth something they never gave that much thought into. Understanding the inhumane injustice they have caused by finally seeing the monster before them, the one they imagined inside their mind, was actually a decent human being that they caused to end up in such a state. However I think that takes at least some care or the will to want to try. These people are so busy pushing their agenda that I don't ever see room for care or thought.

The same reason all the popular heroes are white, that's the only type of character they made back then when creating heroes and villains, and then they ended up being the popular ones. There are diverse villains, but they're lesser known because they were added later when writers actually started to diversify comics.

A powerful separation many people are never able to come to is the difference between empathy and sympathy. It is wholly possible to empathize, deeply, with the pain, fear and rage that drives and shapes people without sympathizing with their actions. Arthur becoming the Joker was a perfect example of a guy that anyone could reasonably empathize with, without having to sympathize with the choices he ultimately made.

I do at times find villains more interesting than heroes. Sometimes heroes just follow the hero's journey and depending on it they can have the same old story as other heroes or a very compelling one. Villains you can do anything with. You have to have them plot, try to fool others and hide in the background as a mastermind, be up front and take the heroes head on, take over the world, destroy the universe, and so on. The possibilities for villains are endless compared to heroes.

We don´t buy into one-dimensional characters anymore. And that is a struggle that all main comic publishers face today. Specially because many of the stories we're experiencing on the screen are recycled from fairly old arcs and archetypes that translate poorly given today's demographic and social landscape. Hopefully new ideas will let us experiment about rounded characters, and not mere stereotypes like the evil gay or the money hungry businessman.

This explains so much about our country (world?) today. It's not just comic characters, the way that racism has been valorized these days. The assumption is always that people MUST be engaged primarily as a member of their group and all interaction interpreted as applying to the group and essentially that every person is prejudged by their identity. It's in everything. It makes really boring comic characters and a really sh*tty world.

"he is a monster of our own making" the creator cannot control what the audience takes away. the movie itself did not make killmonger out to be an anti-hero. they made him look nuts actually. he poisoned the lady at the gallery for no good reason; he killed his girl the moment she got in his way; he chocked out the lady in the garden of the heart-shaped-herb - none of these women where a threat to him; he had the garden, an ancient, sacred place to 'his' people, burned. in the dream he was unable to take in his father's words of regret. I don't think his messy dreads when he woke were an accident, he was meant to look mad. *BURN IT ALL* who is to be blamed when these vile acts are forgotten? the way in which some folks reacted to the character was alarming but this was not the movie's fault, nor the creators. it's no different to how people reacted to thanos. marvel gave the same treatment to zemo and vulture. watchmen readers reacted in a similar way to the rorschach character, much to alan moore's surprise.

Your point about these creators not being able to separate themselves from their physical characteristics is dead on, and it definitely shows in their works.

The greatest heroes in western pop culture are too individualistic to be compatible with identity politics. ID politics force you to think in terms of a collective, often the antithesis to the traditional western superhero. People didn’t see themselves in Spiderman because they were white, straight males from New York. They saw themselves in the character because we’ve all had to make a tough choice between responsibility and what we want to do in the moment for our happiness. They saw their own lives in the simple message of “you can help, so you do help” also known as “with great power, comes great responsibility”

It's funny cause one of my favorite villains of the past decade or so was Idris Elba's character from *"Hobbs and Shaw"* I know the movie was a bit meh, but I remember thinking throughout the film how interesting and bad ass he was. And yet could've been even more so. (Idris Elba is just awesome, hope he gets well soon.) I've always felt villains throughout varied and famed story arcs more interesting than the actual heroes themselves. So as a latino, so called, "poc", I find it rather hypocritical of Hollywood excluding the very people they supposedly "champion" from more varied roles, specifically villains. It's almost as if these virtue signaling clowns are kind of...fake? Dont'ya think?

Straight up, as a gay man, I WANT to see a gay villain. Like you said, not a villain BECAUSE he's gay, but a villain AND he's gay. We're all human, we're all just struggling and tumbling through life, and we are the products of our environment. If that environment allows us to be benevolent and kind, we will be. But if it forces us to do horrible things to survive, most of us will. It's like Quark said in one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek: DS9, The Siege of AR-558: "Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon."

Yeah, not gonna happen. He'd have to be making out with his, let's be honest, black or Hispanic boyfriend every 5 seconds and announcing how gay he is and that he's fighting for marginalized people. Now, if you had a gay villain who was "ya know what, I think Hitler was a loser and I can do better" type who would slaughter anyone and darken the skies with their ashes level evil and doesn't bring up how he needs some young boy to fart in his face constantly to get an erection, then I don't have a problem with it. If he was truly evil and did unspeakably evil things to anyone, including those marginalized people who stood in his way, then you'd have a villain. But, again, look at that horrible batwoman garbage. It's basically a softcore lesbian porn parody on broadcast television. If they could get away with sex scenes, there would be no reason to do anything DC related. So there will be no gay guy villain like you'd want. He'd be mincing, weakly and about as interesting as dried up dog shit because they wouldn't dare imply gays ever do anything evil. Basically arguing that he was having to play the villain because he was black. In, I believe, an Entertainment Tonight interview, Snipes said (paraphrasing) that it was ridiculous to think that and that this time he was playing the villain but next time he would probably get to play the hero. I remember going to a talk in 1995 given by a black writer, Langston Hughes, who said that the way he knew prejudice was on the decline in the US was that we had a lot of black villains in movies and TV shows. People who were prejudiced against blacks would not find it credible that a black villain could go toe-to-toe with a white hero, and having a black hero could just be virtue-signaling. (He didn't use that exact term as it wasn't en vogue yet, but words to that effect) Whereas casting a black villain showed that you really didn't care what race the person was. Needless to say we've come a long way down since 1995.
