i’d heard a story about this version, only reason why i found this. “the day before valentine’s day, kurt was in paris with nirvana while courtney love was in london working on some things with hole. it’s said they talked about spending the night together so they could spend a valentine’s day in paris. apparently, kurt had decorated the hotel room with roses, candles and champagne, but courtney called him and said she couldn’t fly to paris because she didn’t finish her business. kurt spent the night alone. the next day, nirvana played at le zenith and before the show, kurt was told that courtney didn’t go the day before because she was with another man, probably billy corgan, who was in london too. in the last second, kurt decided to start playing ‘where did you sleep last night.’ it’s a heartbreaking version where he screams his soul out. some of the audience of the front row claim they saw him cry middle-end of the song.”
Well after watching mountain of heck, country claims kurt swallowed the pills in Rome which later led him to coma, because he found out she was gonna cheat on him. He was unstable enough and she just added more and more
@@OfekItzMe she funded the documentary? And has been semi-suspected of his potential suicide - she put the word suicidal out there and in the tabloids. She claims he swallowed 60 pills. Doctors who treated him at the hospital says otherwise. He himself said he was clean(er) and finally had reason to live, for once he didnt want to die becouse of Frances. Just becouse its a hard time, doesnt mean it hasnt been worse. Please do some more reasearch before they Edit it all.
people have been been saying this for years, sounds like you just heard the same bs now you're regurgitating it. I don't believe you were there at all!
I saw them 4 days after you, at their Grenoble show, and just like you I couldn't believe what I learned not even two months later. I mean I lived the most beautiful day of my life and one of the most saddest day of my life with so little time between. No I couldn't believe it. On February I experienced happiness at a level I never knew before and on April the same year it was despair and tears under the shower. I'll never forget these two days.
That shit just made me cry......the line "I'm going where the cold wind blows" really saddens me when Kurt sings it. He deserves better than that....just so emotional
I read that cos this show was on valentine's day courtney was suppose to fly over and spend the day with kurt, she never came and then he heard she was with another man that day, then he went on to do this show, not sure if its 100% true but that's what I read, If that's true tho then it just makes this performance a million times more sad
@@kurtpountney5747 Yep its true. someone else said this, i didnt type it but "i’d heard a story about this version, only reason why i found this.
This is magnificent, but also the saddest, most upsetting Kurt performance I've ever heard. He just sounds like he's completely fucking done with everything.
If you want to hear another incredible recording of this song look up the Castaic Lake, California concert they played. It's also on the 2nd Outcesticide album called "The Needle and The Damage Done" and he belts it out like he does on this one. That series was made by Blue Moon Records out of England.
Its so amazing how much pain and power he put in this song, even this version. His heart must have been shattered in thousands! The „scream“ at 3:50 is something you couldnt find a word for. I never heard any other song with that amount of emotion. Just a legend. Rock in Paradise 🖤💛
You know what fucks me up? Nirvana was amazing, but what they were going to do next (if this rendition of this song wasn’t just a one off thing) would have been absolutely earth shattering. It would have gone down in history as an artistic development the likes of Sgt Pepper. It would have further changed the landscape of popular music. His songwriting was getting more obviously personal, as evidenced by You Know You’re Right. I can’t stand to think about what the world lost when it lost this man. It breaks me. It really does.
Was reading the comments and thought I had gotten to the end of the song where you all were commenting on his screaming. I didn't hear it and didnt know what you guys were talking about.... then I got to the actual end of the song. I've listened to alot of Nirvana and I have never heard him scream from his soul like that, nor have a felt a scream so much in my own soul. Holy shit Kurt.
As a musician, there are some songs you relate to so much that you cant sing it without crying, maybe you can if you dont think about it, but when you resonate with it so much it has so much more depth when u perform it because your letting the people see that what you sing you mean it.
It all fits together in a fitting yet terribly heart breaking way. If you haven’t heard the story behind this version of the cover, scroll through some other comments, they’ll tell you. But basically, his wife abandoned him on Valentine’s Day to be with another man. In the song, he’s asking from a third person point of view about where the protagonist spent the night, and asking her not to be deceitful about her doings. With the context of the performance and the situation, this could be seen as Kurt’s actual wife who spent the night somewhere else. But perhaps the more terrifying part comes after this, where the protagonist’s (in this case Courtney) husband (in this case Kurt) was stated to be a hard working man who was killed. Intentional or not, Kurt quite literally told the story of a man who’s worked hard and had gone through a lot, had his wife sleep somewhere else and seems to lie about it, and finishes with the man dying. In other words himself. Kurt told his story, and he did it all in one of the most devastating performances of his life, where every inch of pain and agony can be heard leaving his mouth, where you can hear the sound of a man’s life shattering around him. This is the sound of a man who is breaking, who has gone through it all. Go ahead and debate his suicide after you listen to this, I dare you.
She didn't "abandon" him on V Day. They were never meant to see each other until early March as he was touring and she was working on stuff with her band in California. The "to be with another man" nonsense was in his imagination because he read an article where she admitted that Billy Corgan asked her to spend Christmas with him but she turned him down. He was hissing misogynistic insults in his songs at her before that. The song is an old folk song from the 1870's popularized by Leadbelly that he covered many times including with her.
@@Danathema alright, but that bit at the end wasn’t really needed. I appreciate the spread of knowledge, but I didn’t show a sign that I wasn’t aware, so you telling me those extra facts at the end just seems odd. I’m aware he didn’t write it, I’m aware they’ve played it together, I don’t think he wrote it about her or something of the sort. Best if you only state relevant details.
So much more than rock n roll Kurt Cobain was. He had that soul, that twang and that passion of a country musician or a blues artist. Way more than rock n roll his music could've gone
The cello really makes this better then the MTV version. Amazing. Courtney really didn't deserve Kurt man, damn. If only he found a woman that truly loved him.
"The best NIRVANA live cut of all time. Roar Aasheim, Matt Reeder, Chris Hickman, and Felipe Souza all have this rendition as #1 on their lists. This performance was the last time the band would ever perform the song. Rolf Fassbind sets the scene, "Kurt's vocals, the cello - everything sounds very emotional."
I still do love Nirvana. I got into their music around the age of 12 or 13 in 1993. I'm 41 now and the love of their music is still fresh. There are some moments, feelings that'll never go away. Nirvana's effect is one of them. It'll never sleep. I'm still in my boots rocking.
No matter when I hear this, my eyes well up and the hair on the back of my neck stands up as if a rabbit ran across my grave. Kurt is the only "rock star" that I shed a tear over more than once. I've cried for many, but not like I have for Kurt. My heart tells me that what we were lead to believe is not the true story of his passing. Either way, his body is gone, but his spirit lives in us all :)
I've got this concert on a two disk set that I bought, probably 20 years ago and this song was exceptionally well done, as well as how present the cello is throughout, much more so than it was during the Unplugged recordings. Right after this song ends, he does some feedback with his guitar, something he did somewhat often and to me was a master at using it, which produced some hauntingly beautiful sounds.
This is probably the best version of “where did you sleep last night.” The vocals gave me goosebumps and it feels more sadder and sinister than the unplugged version. Kurt deserved better i hope one day when i die i can meet you R.I.P
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me Tell me where did you sleep last night? In the pines, in the pines Where the sun don't ever shine I would shiver the whole night through My girl, my girl, where will you go? I'm going where the cold wind blows In the pines, in the pines Where the sun don't ever shine I would shiver the whole night through Her husband was a hard working man Just about a mile from here His head was found in a driving wheel But his body never was found My girl, my girl, don't lie to me Tell me where did you sleep last night? In the pines, in the pines Where the sun don't ever shine I would shiver the whole night through My girl, my girl, where will you go? I'm going where the cold wind blows In the pines, in the pines Where the sun don't ever shine I would shiver the whole night through My girl, my girl, don't lie to me Tell me where did you sleep last night? In the pines, in the pines Where the sun don't ever shine I would shiver the whole night through My girl, my girl, where will you go I'm going where the cold wind blows In the pines, the pines The sun don't shine I'd shiver the whole night through
Forgot to share, that there's another incredible performance of this song he played solo at a concert in Castaic lake, California, which can also be found on the 2nd "Outcesticide" album called "The Needle and The Damage Done", where he really screams it well. It'll give you goosebumps, if you haven't heard it.
its not about the performance dude. its about the story of this live show, its about the pain he was feeling, its about his anger, its about his sadness.
Courtney Love runied him. Kurt had prepared flowers and champagne for them to celebrate valentines, but didn't come and most likely cheated on him, and he got word of this and that's what made this version of where you sleep last night so powerful and sad at the same time. Rest easy Kurt Edit: yes i know someone commented something similar to this before me
Hubbie led belly was one of the greatest musicians that ever played a guitar that ever lived !!!! Kurt knew great musicians he had a great gift and this song proved that !!!!!
sad that some feel the need to invent a dramatic story even though it's not factual at all. No, Courtney was never supposed to be in Paris since her band Hole was scheduled to film a music video in California: Miss World.
@@luan4310 no, she literally said that she had the chance (in March when she got to Europe) and didn't do it (different from wanting to). The story everybody liked can be de.bun.ked with a simple search. The three people involved were in different countries, that's your Valentine's affair Iol
Steady. The concept Courtney had a career separate to Kurt might get the rage going in some of them. Funny how they don't mention the "my favourite dead whore" lyric when she refused to join him until March.
