I've told people before, many times, it smells like it's gonna rain and always got a look like I was crazy. Even just saying I like the smell of rain and some would laugh.

The smell of the rain.. ahhhh brings back strong memories of the past. Flailing arms, dancing in the rain, splashing in the mudpools and playing with friends while witnessing from not so far away, your house's chimney blowing up smoke, knowing mama is brewing porridge later when done bathing in the rain. 😭😭

i remember reading that the water molecules help the molecules we smell to bond to our receptors more easily, so we are essentially smelling everything much better than normal. i wonder if petrichor is what it was actually talking about but in a more layman's terms.

I'm Greek and I had no idea that "ozone" (όζον) meant to smell. I knew "osmi" (οσμή) ment smell (the noun) but this is something I hear for the first time.

Oh, and "Petros" (Πέτρος) is actually a name (Peter). The corresponding word of "stone" is "petra" (πέτρα). :D

I imagine that modern Greek has changed somewhat compared to Ancient Greek. Kind of like how English has evolved over the centuries.

Phil Lewis Somewhat? No, they've completely changed. Being able to speak Greek has nothing to do with being able to speak Ancient Greek. Yeah, the modern words we use come from ancient, but most of the times the meaning is different (evolved, as you said).

A long time ago, I heard that the 'it smells like rain' (just before it rains) is due to the lower air pressure you get during storms allows gases in the soil to emerge. Kind of like when I used to skydive a lot, as we got up higher in the airplane a lot of jumpers would start to pass gas. We would blame it on the lower outside air pressure making the inside air pressure greater so our bodies tried to equalized the pressure and release some gas!

I really liked this video. Maybe it will help people ask more: who, what, where, when, why, how much, etc. questions. I've "smelled rain a comin" all my life; never really thought about why. I think I may have fleetingly thought that maybe the metallic (and/or fishy) smell as coming from minerals in the air. Thanks for asking (and answering) the questions, and sharing! : )

I still don't know what rain smells like. Like for real, it rains all the damn time in my country but it doesn't smell any different from when it doesn't rain.

I've lived in Las Vegas most of my life, where obviously, it doesn't rain much, 2 to 4 inches a year. when it does rain, it smells quite strong. perhaps it is due to the chemicals mentioned in the video building up over time. I lived in Portland, OR for a year, where it rains probably 50+ inches a year. I didn't notice the rain having an odor, at least not as strong as Vegas. this is purely anecdotal though. haha

Only if the soil is dry, and gets wet, that is when you smell it. So if your area is always raining, you will rarely smell it.

In the mojave desert we have a different smell caused by the creosote plant aka greasewood (Larrea tridentata). When it gets moist it releases chemicals.

We are part of nature as the rain, storm, winter etc. and all of these natures gift have a distinguished scent. I wish to capture these aromas in bottle so that I can use it when it's not raining

I have a terrible allergy. At the time here (India) we have monsoon season. It's cloudy all day but rains shower at different times. My nose on the other starts to tickle like hell when it's about to rain. Guess I have a natural indicator.

That is just part of the story, rain picks up the odors from the air, even acids from pollutants. Acid Rain can fall and corrode paint on cars or buildings, when grass, earth or plants become wet, you can clearly pick up the smells that you did not sense when they were dry. Wet alfalfa is be of my favorite smells or if you are at a football game or golfing Gwen a heavy downpour comes you can smell the nice smell of wet grass. When you pull clothes out of a washer, they smell nice wet.

The structure of Geosmin was presented properly, a much more complicated molecule than ozone. The structure and composition of Geosmin really wasn't important to the topic. The observation about them using the wrong structure for Ozone is legitimate feedback, they didn't do the quick background research to check its structure. But overall it is still a great video.

Cover the scents of decaying leaves please. There are all sorts of articles on the web about where the colors come from, but I have yet to find anything regarding the molecules responsible for the scents that fresh piles of fallen leaves give off.
