This enclosed scooter micro grocery getter has a 1 cylinder 250cc 14hp engine. The mid engine Zundapp Janus is named after the two-headed god Janus. We spotted this 1958 Zundapp Janus 250 at the MicroSouth Micro Car Show in Florida.

new cars need to be fast, reliable and most importantly be way more safe and comfortable, this is essentially a sheet metal box with an engine and 4 wheels, i love it, but at the time these things just dont go fast enough to even get into a deadly crash, theres 0 crumple zone, old very empty cars are super rattly and generally uncomfortable to ride for hours on end, not only that they're so weak that you could most likely destroy the entire car barehanded

It would have been informative to mention that in the Fifties in Germany (and maybe some other European countries as well), there would be 3 types of fuel pumps at a gas station: gasoline, Diesel, and moped. Moped was premixed gasoline and 2-stroke oil, used mostly for mopeds and scooters, but also for the numerous models of 2-stroke cars on the road in Germany at that time. There was no need to mix up your own 2-stroke fuel. A popular car was was the NSU sedan, with a 1,000 cc 40 hp 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine. I actually drove one briefly when I lived in Quebec in the Sixties. My neighbour had one, so a few of them made it to North America.

In North America, we have lots and lots of empty space because our countries have only been colonized by a post agricultural/industrial civilization for far less time than Europe, so travel distances here tend to be much larger, partly because people are spread out farther (people don't like each other, who knew?) and also because the sheer size of our country gives much many more potential destinations while remaining in the same country. So naturally we probably trended more towards cars built for longer distances and higher speed, rather than more modest town cars, at a faster rate than Europeans.
@nomorokay
@nomorokay 2 года назад
@@justaway_of_the_samurai Many many years ago, I was visiting my grandfather in Ireland, and we got to talking about the roads. Most of the roads there are very twisty and rural, with only a few freeways/motorways, between around 3 major cities. He laughed when he told me that car engines were dying all over the motorways, because now it was possible to drive at 70 mph for more than 5 minutes. Those old English cars couldn’t stand up to that.

@ThePaperKhan
@ThePaperKhan 2 года назад
Ive always wondered why the English prefer to use the word "boot" It has always perplexed me as in early 20th century you could find cars with literal wooden trunks on cars to act as storage. Does that mean that the English instead attached boots to their cars instead of trunks?
@wordreet
@wordreet 2 года назад
@@ThePaperKhan The word "boot"(which is commonly used by the English), goes back to 18th century horse-drawn carriages where the coachman sat on a chest, which was used to store, among other things, his boots. This storage space came to be termed as the "boot locker", which soon became the "boot".

This is exactly what's missing in the modern E vehicle portfolio: The minimum possible car. Where's my electric Fiat 500 or Mini? Yes, there are modern cars bearing those names, but they have very little to do with the original concept of the minimum possible car.
@thejacal2704
@thejacal2704 2 года назад
Look at the Citroen Ami!
@no1DdC
@no1DdC 2 года назад
There are a couple of electric "cars" in Europe that qualify: Both the Renault Twizy and the Citroen Ami are incredibly minimalist and basic electric vehicles, classified as quadricycles instead of cars, just like the Janus. Low performance, range, comfort and safety, particularly with the tippy, airbagless Citroen, are a given, but they are cheap and sort of usable in cities. As for an actual car, the Dacia Spring Electric would qualify as minimum transportation, just barely. In Germany, it costs €10,920 after subsidies. With just 44hp, it's one of the least powerful cars sold today. Range is impressive for the price (160 km in practice) and it's incredibly efficient, but it's very unrefined, slow even by slow car standards, terrible to drive (incredibly basic things like the steering not self-centering have been overlooked) and has poor crash safety. Unlike other Dacias, it's not a good car by any metric. The Renault Twingo E-Tech is the cheapest electric car I would recommend. Starting at €15,420, it's got almost twice the amount of power compared to the Dacia, much more comfort, safety and better equipment, has good handling and actual refinement, the only downside being less range (130 km in practice). This is basic electric transportation for the masses done right.

Re economy of bubble cars - not nearly as frugal as the engine size might suggest. I had an Isetta for years in my youth and thought it would do 60 -80 mpg because of the 300cc engine. Not so; more like 40 mpg @ 37 mph, my self-imposed cruising speed. I had not reckoned on wind resistance and weight that made the engine work hard all the time.

Still isn't bad. Considering your average megaton Cadillac, circa. 1930-2030 makes a bit less than 20mpg, a tiny car running on a tiny engine, be that a kei car or one of these, making 40 is just fine. I guess you just have to have realistic expectations, which isn't exactly something you can reasonably expect anyone to have.
